Beats Solo 4 review: a solid update to an iconic pair of wireless headphones, but the competition is now too hot

[ad_1]

Beats Solo 4: Two-minute review

The Beats Solo 4 are long-awaited on-ear wireless headphones that aim to improve on the company’s 2016 Solo 3 with an increased battery life and additional features, including a USB-C port for simultaneous charging and lossless hi-res audio playback, and Spatial Audio – as well as some new color options.

When wearing the Beats Solo 4, I was pleasantly surprised at how well isolated I was from my immediate environment, despite the lack of active noise cancellation (ANC). The claimed 50-hour battery appeared to hold true during my tests too, which is great for such comparatively small and light headphones.

7 new horror movies in May 2024, on Prime Video, Paramount Plus, Shudder and more

[ad_1]

The start of May means a fresh cut of horror movies hits the best streaming services. As 2024 continues to deliver the horror goods on the big screen, more of those creepy titles are at last hitting the small-screen online, too. This month’s batch of recommendations covers the gauntlet of subgenres with something for everyone’s terrorbuds.

If you caught Alex Garland’s Civil War at your local theater recently, now might be the time to revisit his 2018 hallucinogenic masterpiece Annihilation. Take a trip farther back and 1993’s extraTERRORestrial movie Fire in the Sky is hitting Prime Video in the US, if you don’t like sleep.

A US supercomputer with 8,000 Intel Xeon CPUs and 300TB of RAM is being auctioned — 160th most powerful computer in the world has some maintenance issues though and will cost thousands per day to run

[ad_1]

The Cheyenne supercomputer, based at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC) in Cheyenne, Wyoming, was ranked as the 20th most powerful computer in the world in 2016 – but now it’s up for sale through the US General Services Administration (GSA).

By November 2023, the 5.34-petaflops system’s ranking had slipped to 160th in the world, but it’s still a monster, able to carry out 5.34 quadrillion calculations per second. It has been put to a number of noteworthy purposes in the past, including studying weather phenomena and predicting natural disasters.

Don’t fall for the PHEV hype – go battery EV or go home

[ad_1]

You’ve probably seen the headlines: battery EV sales are slowing down, and PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) sales are hot; the DC fast charging infrastructure isn’t good enough for road trips, so you should drive a PHEV; battery EVs aren’t ready for prime time, but PHEV are the best of both worlds. I’m here to tell you that it’s all nonsense. Battery EVs are better today than ever, while PHEVs are full of compromises.

Before we dive into why PHEVs are generally a bad idea, here’s a quick disclaimer. I’ve been driving battery EVs for six years now (I’ve owned two Tesla Model 3s back-to-back), and as a car journalist, I’ve tested almost every battery EV available in the US over the last decade, plus my fair share of PHEVs. Since 2018, I’ve been doing road trips in battery EVs multiple times a year all over the Western US.

Best Buy launches big-screen TV sale – 8 best deals from $369.99

[ad_1]

Best Buy has launched a massive 4K TV sale featuring up to $800 off many top-rated TVs from Sony, Samsung and LG. Most of the offers are on previous-generation models which are still excellent to this day, so it’s a great opportunity to pick up a bargain on a premium display. I’ve searched the Best Buy TV sale and picked out 8 of the best deals I recommend.

Browse all TV deals at Best Buy

Let’s start with the LG C3 77-inch 4K OLED TV for $2,299.99 (was $2,699.99). This display still holds firmly in our best TV guide for its great performance and fantastic picture quality for TV shows, films, and gaming. While it has been slightly cheaper before, this is still a great price for an enormous OLED screen.

If you want a cheaper but still top-quality display, consider this Samsung Q80C 65-inch 4K QLED TV for $999.99 (it was $1,299.99). It’s a steal at $1,000, which is a benchmark we like to aim for if you want an affordable QLED TV. It’s especially great for sports and gaming, thanks to its high brightness levels and impressive ability to handle motion.

Those are just two of the many highlights from the latest Best Buy 4K TV sale. You can check out more of my recommendations below.

ChromeOS adopts a new default font – and surprisingly, I don’t hate it

[ad_1]

Google has a big change in store for ChromeOS users: a new default font for the operating system, which will replace Roboto as the go-to typeface on all Chrome devices.

The new default font is Google Sans (formerly known as Product Sans), which owners of the best Chromebooks will already be familiar with, even unknowingly; it’s already seeded throughout both the OS and Google’s websites, appearing in the Files app and Quick Settings menu as well as on Google’s own digital storefront.

A big Google Maps redesign is now being tested on Android

[ad_1]

The significant Google Maps redesign we saw a glimpse of back in February has started reappearing on some Android phones, with new refinements added – and it could well be getting a full roll out in the near future.

This has been spotted by 9to5Google, and a lot of the design tweaks are the same. Several of the full screen panels have been changed to show part of the map in the background, giving users some context while they look up different details.

10 epic shows I can’t wait for on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and more in mid-2024

[ad_1]

It’s hard to believe we’re already a third of the way through 2024. That said, when we’ve had so many fantastic shows to stream since the year began, it’s little wonder the time has flown by.

The world’s best streaming services aren’t done bringing us more potentially great series, either. Between now and September 1, there are lots of new shows, plus the highly anticipated return of fan favorites, to look forward to. With that in mind, I’ve handpicked 10 of the most exciting shows I can’t wait to watch in mid-2024 (NB: I would’ve included Cobra Kai season 6, whose first installment is out on July 18, but it was too late to include in this article. Sorry, Cobra Kai fans!).
