The next-generation iPad Air is now reportedly shipping to the United States and other countries in preparation for launch.

The rumor comes from the leaker known as “Instant Digital,” who claims that manufacturers in China are now shipping the 2024 iPad Air in two sizes to overseas locations. “Everything is ready” for launch, the Weibo user says.

The sixth-generation ‌iPad Air‌ is rumored to feature the M2 chip, a redesigned rear camera, and specification upgrades like Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E. Most significantly, the ‌iPad Air‌ is expected to come in two sizes for the first time, just like the Apple Watch, iPad Pro, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro. One of the size options will be the same as the previous two generations at 10.9-inches, while the new addition to the lineup will apparently mirror the ‌iPad Pro‌’s 12.9-inch model.

Recent reports coming out of Asia suggest that Apple will announce new iPad models on Tuesday, March 26. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to release new ‌iPad Air‌ and ‌iPad Pro‌ models around the end of March or in April. The latest indications suggest that the new ‌iPad Pro‌ are now more likely to see a launch in April.

It has felt like a very long wait for new iPads, with the most recent ones having landed back in 2022. But that wait might almost be over, as two separate sources suggest that the iPad Pro 2024 and the iPad Air 6 might be announced on March 26.

Chinese leaker Instant Digital and Chinese website ITHome have both put this date forward, as spotted by MacRumors, though the latter mentions that cases for these tablets will apparently start being sold on that date, and seems to use this as evidence for March 26 being the launch date.

In any case, even if these tablets are announced on March 26, they might not ship until a while later, as according to Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, these tablets will ship with iPadOS 17.4, and that probably won’t be finished until at least the end of March, after which it will need installing on these slates. So that might mean they don’t ship until the second half of April.

But that doesn’t rule out an announcement on March 26, with pre-orders perhaps opening soon after. Indeed, leaker Ross Young (via MacRumors) has recently said that the iPad Pro 2024 will be announced in late March or early April, and will ship in April.

The iPad Pro 2024 in particular should be worth the wait too, with leaks suggesting it will be the first of Apple‘s tablets to boast an OLED screen, along with a powerful M3 chipset, a landscape-oriented front camera, and maybe even wireless charging via MagSafe.

A missing model

However, the iPad Air 6 might be slightly more disappointing, as the main rumored change there was the addition of a larger 12.9-inch model, but according to leaker ShrimpApplePro, there will probably only be a 10.9-inch version, as we currently have.

That said, they’re basing this on the absence of activity surrounding a 12.9-inch model being assembled in Vietnam, and they note that it’s still possible this larger model is instead being manufactured in China. So while we wouldn’t rule it out just yet – especially as this larger variant has been extensively leaked – they don’t seem very convinced that it’s happening.

Beyond that, this source claims that the iPad Air 6 will have a landscape-oriented selfie camera but otherwise won’t be in for any major design changes. They also claim that of the five colors the iPad Air (2022) is available in (namely Space Gray, Starlight, Pink, Purple, and Blue), either Pink or Blue will probably not be offered with the new model – though presumably a new shade will take its place.

As ever, we’d take all of these leaks with a pinch of salt, but one way or another it’s sounding like we’ll probably see the iPad Pro 2024 and the iPad Air 6 fairly soon.

The next-generation iPad Air will be equipped with a landscape front camera, according to the leaker known as “ShrimpApplePro.”

If this information is accurate, the front camera on the next iPad Air would be located in the bezel to the right of the screen when the device is held upright. As a result, the front camera would be positioned at the top of the iPad when the device is in landscape orientation, making it centered with the user’s eyes during video calls. This change would be especially beneficial to those who use the iPad Air with a Magic Keyboard.

On the current iPad Air, the front camera is in the top bezel above the screen, resulting in it being off-center in landscape orientation.

The leaker does not expect the next iPad Air to have any other significant design changes. They also cast doubt on a larger 12.9-inch iPad Air, but that model has been widely rumored by multiple sources, so it would be surprising if it did not launch.

A landscape front camera had already been rumored for both the next iPad Pro and iPad Air, so it is becoming an increasingly likely design change. Apple already repositioned the front camera on the entry-level iPad 10 a few years ago, so it would make sense for the change to be expanded to the entire iPad lineup eventually.

“During ‌Face ID‌ setup, iPad needs to be in landscape with the camera at the top of the screen,” read hidden code in iPadOS 17.4.

Apple is expected to unveil new iPads in late March or in April.

“ShrimpApplePro” has a mixed track record with Apple rumors over the past few years. The leaker accurately revealed details about devices like the iPhone 15 Pro and Apple Watch Series 9, but they were incorrect about the Apple Watch Ultra 2 being available in a Space Black finish and the iPad mini being updated in 2023.

Apple is reportedly still working on the version of iPadOS needed for the first iPad Pro with a OLED screen. The software development process might delay the launch until well into April.

Previous leaks previously pointed at a March debut, and that’s still possible. But those eager for Apple’s next premium tablet should also be prepared to wait as much as another month.

Waiting until April for 2024 iPad Pro

There were no new iPads released in 2023. The last time an Apple slate came on the market was fall 2022. But the wait for an upgrade to its premium tablets for professionals is almost over, according to many, many leaks.

And there’s plenty of anticipation, as both sizes of the new model will apparently be the first to move past a traditional LCD display to an OLED. The tablet is also expected to run the Apple M3 processor that debuted in the fall 2023 MacBook Pro.

And the big question on the mind of iPad fans is when. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman used his most-recent PowerOn newsletter to weigh in again, stating:

“I’ve repeatedly said that new software for the iPad Pro — a variant of iPadOS 17.4 designed for the updated models — won’t be complete until the end of March or even sometime in April. Once the OS is finished, Apple needs to send it off to the factories to be installed on the new hardware. That process could last a couple weeks, probably taking us deeper into next month.”

Gurman’s sources inside Apple allow him to make generally accurate predictions about the company’s upcoming products.

More about the first OLED iPad

As noted, the highlight of the next iPad Pro will be OLED (short for organic light-emitting diode) displays in which each pixel glows on its own. This leads to a bright, even image with strong contrast. Leaks indicate these will go into both the 13-inch version and the 11-inch one.

OLED screen panels don’t need backlights so they’re thinner than traditional LEDs. This will allegedly allowed the designers of the 2024 iPad Pro to make the upcoming tablet significantly slimmer.

The panels also cost more, but a leak indicates that the price jump will be less than half of what had been previously rumored.

We’ll officially find out all the details when Apple finally unveils the 2024 iPad Pro, whether that’s in March or April.

March 16: Today in Apple history: iPad gets an eye-dazzling Retina display March 16, 2012: Apple introduces the third-generation iPad, its first tablet to come with a Retina display. Marketed as simply “the new iPad,” it’s widely known as the “iPad 3.”

Boasting that beautiful screen and Apple’s then-swanky A5X chip with a quad-core graphics processor, the third-gen iPad quickly becomes a big success. Disappointingly for customers, it will only hang around until October 2012. That’s the shortest lifespan of any iOS product in history, at just seven months.

iPad 3 brings a Retina display to remember

The arrival of the Retina display proved great for iPad buyers. Now they could enjoy astonishingly crisp visuals on the new tablet’s 9.7-inch screen. Apple introduced the Retina display with the iPhone 4 in mid-2010, making its arrival on the iPad both inevitable and highly anticipated.

In fact, the 264 pixels per inch was a lower density than on the iPhone. However, users typically hold iPads further away from their eyes than iPhones. That meant Apple could stick with its “Retina” marketing term.

The iPad 3 also supported some pretty great features. Hardware improvements included a 5-megapixel camera, HD 1080p video recording (with software-based image stabilization), dictation and support for LTE networks in North America.

In the marketplace, the device did very well, selling 3 million units in its first three days. This represented the pinnacle of Apple’s dominance of the tablet market. Apple manufactured more than 60% of all tablets bought during Q2 2012 worldwide. By contrast, today Apple captures around 38% of the market.

iPad 3 disappointments

Not everything about the iPad 3 met with universal acclaim, however. The first iPad became the fastest-selling new product in Apple history, and the second one improved on that.

The iPad 3 marked the first time Apple faced an issue it continues to grapple with: How do you make a new iPad compelling each and every year?

Some reviews took on the almost begrudging tone you see with modern iPhone reviews. The reviewer knows the new device is better than its direct predecessor, and can’t therefore award it a lower mark, but struggles to get too excited about it. The iPad 3 was evolutionary, not revolutionary.

At the time of its launch, some customers expressed disappointment that the iPad 3 measured thicker than its predecessor, while otherwise sticking almost exactly to the design of the second-gen iPad. The fact that it didn’t come with an A6 chip, as had been heavily rumored, was also a bit of a letdown.

No Siri for you, iPad 3

The biggest criticism of all? Siri didn’t make it onto the device, despite having been marketed as a big selling point of 2011’s iPhone 4s. The third-gen iPad arrived just a handful of months after Steve Jobs’ death, so every Apple product was being scrutinized to draw out larger points about new CEO Tim Cook’s approach to fresh products.

Ultimately, the greatest disappointment with the iPad 3 was just how short a lifespan it had. Apple debuted the fourth-gen iPad just 221 days after the iPad 3 went on sale. The iPad 4 added the Lightning connector (making the iPad 3 the last iPad to support the old 30-pin dock connector), and featured Apple’s new A6X chip.

While the first iPad Pro with an OLED display is expected any day now, iPad Air fans will have a much longer wait. Possibly until 2028. That’s what an analyst predicted, anyway.

However, this contradicts a previous report that said an OLED iPad Air would be out in 2026.

No OLED iPad Air until 2028

With OLED (short for organic light-emitting diode) displays, each pixel glows on its own. The result is a bright, even image with strong contrast. This type of screen looks so good, it’s already used for iPhone and Apple Watch. And numerous leaks point to an OLED iPad Pro launching in March or perhaps April.

But don’t hold you breath for the screen tech to appear in Apple’s mid-range line of tablets. “We expect the iPad Air to change to OLED in 2028,” said Kang Min-soo, a senior analyst with Omdia, according to the Korean-language site The Elec (machine translation).

Or maybe sooner?

That said, it’s possible the improved screen tech will become part of the Air product line much sooner. In late 2023, a separate report also coming out of Asia predicted an OLED iPad Air would launch in 2026.

An iPad mini with OLED will also allegedly debut at the same time.

The wait is about OLED cost

As noted, OLEDs are bright, with excellent contrast. And the panels don’t require backlights — pixels glow on their own. That will supposedly allow the 2024 iPad Pro to be 22% thinner than the current model.

For all the improvements, there’s a significant drawback: OLED panels cost more than traditional LEDs. That’s expected to push up the price of the next iPad Pro, though perhaps not as much as had been feared.

The iPad Air line sits between the Pro and “standard” iPad models. Including a high-end screen that pushes the price up too high would mean that Apple has two premium tablets and no mid-range one. So perhaps it makes sense for a four year wait before OLED comes to the Air.

“In 2028, we expect the iPad Air to go OLED as well, with the iPad Air using single-stack and the iPad Pro using two-stack tandem OLEDs,” said Omdia researcher Kang Min-soo, speaking on Thursday at the 2024 Korea Display Conference in Seoul.

A two-stack tandem structure consists of two light-emitting layers stacked together. The two-stack OLED design can generate the same brightness levels as a single-stack design, but with significantly reduced power consumption and extended lifespan. The iPhone currently uses a single stack OLED display with one light-emitting layer.

Omdia’s latest prediction is an adjustment to a forecast published earlier this year, in which it said Apple will launch 8.3-inch iPad mini and 10.8-inch iPad Air models with OLED displays in 2026.

The research firm now appears to be leaning towards the possibility that Apple will launch an OLED foldable in the next few years in the form of a 7- to 8-inch device that could ultimately replace the 8.3-inch iPad mini. According to a previous report, Apple is reviewing a launch timeframe for such a device between 2026 and 2027. The latest report however does not mention whether Kang Min-soo offered his own timeframe.

Apple’s next-generation OLED iPad Pro models are expected to be announced in a matter of weeks, according to multiple sources. They are rumored to have a thinner design, an M3 chip, improved cameras, MagSafe wireless charging, and a redesigned Magic Keyboard accessory that makes the iPad Pro more laptop-like.

Apple is also working on two non-OLED versions of the iPad Air, in 10.9 and 12.9-inch sizes, similar to the two sizes of the iPad Pro. These iPad Air models are expected to be introduced as soon as late March alongside the new OLED iPad Pro models.

Apple will soon debut the M3 iPad Pros with OLED screens. A new rumor suggests the smaller 11.1-inch model could be in short supply at launch.

This is due to the panels being in limited supply initially. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro apparently won’t have any supply issues.

Apple to soon get a second OLED iPad Pro supplier

Apple’s upcoming M3 iPad Pros will supposedly use 11.1-inch and 12.9-inch OLED displays. This would be a big upgrade from the current gen models’ LCD and mini LED panels.

Display analyst Ross Young, in an X post, claims the 11.1-inch iPad Pro’s panel production is significantly behind the 12.9-inch model. Samsung Display is currently the sole supplier of the screen. LG Display will start production of the 11.1-inch OLED panels later this month, which should ease supply issues.

So, the 11.1-inch iPad Pro might be in short supply initially, but its availability should improve in the following weeks. LG is already the secondary supplier of 12.9-inch OLED screens for Apple, so the bigger iPad Pro should have better availability at launch.

M3 iPad Pro won’t start shipping before April

Previous reports indicate Apple could launch the M3 iPad Pro in late March or early April. Ross reaffirmed this, saying the panel shipments started in February, and the new iPads won’t start shipping until April.

Apart from an OLED screen, a faster M3 chip, and a thinner chassis, Apple’s 2024 iPad Pro lineup is unlikely to sport other significant changes. We wish Apple would improve the battery life or add extra ports to the tablet, but the chances appear slim.

Alongside new M3 iPad Pros, Apple will purportedly also refresh its iPad Air lineup. Besides an internal spec bump, the company will add a 12.9-inch iPad Air to the lineup, whose design recently leaked in CAD renders. A new revamped Magic Keyboard should debut alongside the new tablets with an aluminum casing.
