Apple is ready to launch its new flagship iPads, and the company has teased its next launch event for May 7. That’s when Apple’s new OLED-equipped iPad Pros will likely be unveiled, but one of those iPads could be in short supply due to Samsung.

Apple’s OLED 11-inch iPad Pro could face shortages

Apple is expected to launch two versions of the iPad Pro, one with an 11-inch OLED screen and the other with a 12.9-inch OLED screen. The 11-inch variant reportedly uses LG Display’s and Samsung Display’s OLED panels, while the 12.9-inch variant exclusively uses LG Display’s OLED panel. However, according to industry insider Ross Young (via 9To5Mac), the shipments of the 12.9-inch OLED iPad Pro seem to be higher than those of the 11-inch variant.

Ross Young claims that Samsung has been facing technical challenges in producing 11-inch OLED panels for new iPad Pros. He also claims that this situation could persist throughout May and affect the availability of the upcoming iPad Pro. A 9To5Mac report claimed that drivers found in iPadOS 17.5 reveal that the upcoming iPad Pros use display panels from LG and Samsung.

Previous reports claim that upcoming iPad Pro models from Apple use a completely new type of OLED panel. It is called a two-stack tandem OLED panel with two emissive layers. Such a panel is said to offer longer life, higher brightness, and a lower chance of pixel burn-in.

Apple is finally planning a Calculator app for the iPad, over 14 years after launching the device, according to a source familiar with the matter.

iPad And Calculator App Feature
iPadOS 18 will include a built-in Calculator app for all iPad models that are compatible with the software update, which is expected to be unveiled during the opening keynote of Apple’s annual developers conference WWDC on June 10.

The lack of an official Calculator app on the iPad has been a long-running meme on social media, as users have waited for its arrival. In the meantime, iPad users have relied on calculator apps in the App Store, such as PCalc and Calcbot.

AppleInsider last week reported that macOS 15 will feature a revamped Calculator app with integration with the Notes app, a resizable window, a sidebar that lists recent calculations, and more. While we have not independently confirmed those details, it is possible that the updated Mac app will be based on the new iPad app.

The first beta of iPadOS 18 is expected to be released immediately following the WWDC keynote, and the update should be widely released in September.

Now, if only we could get Instagram and WhatsApp for the iPad…

Rumors say a new 12.9-inch iPad Air will come out soon. And ESR is banking on it early with the release of its new range of cases for the expected tablet — the first time Apple would offer that size outside of its iPad Pro lineup.

New ESR iPad Air cases gamble on 12.9-inch iPad Air release

Everyone seems to expect Apple to put out a 12.9-inch iPad Air soon. It will mark a first for the iPhone giant, if it puts out its lower-cost tablet in a larger size previously reserved for its iPad Pro lineup. Currently, iPad Air (5th generation) comes only in the 10.9-inch size.

Perhaps Apple confirmed the upcoming release with accessories makers. That would explain why ESR decided to be first out of the gate, even before the tablet comes out, to maximize initial case sales upon release of the new iPad.

However, there’s no certainty ESR’s new cases for a 12.9-inch iPad Air will fit what Apple releases, as the release is not confirmed.

New ESR cases

On Amazon, ESR promotes a range of three new cases for a 12.9-inch iPad Air with the slogan, “Transform and Do It All.” Of the three cases below, only one is available for purchase on Amazon so far: Rebound Hybrid Case 360. All three are listed on ESR’s website, but currently say “out of stock.” Presumably, they will be available soon.

Retail stock of the current iPad Air is starting to dwindle ahead of the widely anticipated arrival of new models early next month, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reports.

Citing sources at multiple retail stores in the latest “Power On” newsletter, Gurman said that inventory levels of the ‌iPad Air‌ are diminishing in Apple stores, a typical indicator that new versions are soon to be released. Unlike the ‌iPad Air‌, the iPad Pro apparently remains abundantly available, which suggests that Apple might be planning to sell through its current stock even after introducing an upgraded model. Historically, Apple has managed its inventory to align with the release cycles of its products, reducing shipments of older units to make room for the latest offerings.

Expected changes coming to the next-generation ‌iPad Air‌ include the more powerful M2 chip and an additional 12.9-inch display size option, while the ‌iPad Pro‌ is rumored to receive OLED display technology, the M3 chip, and new accessories. The refreshed ‌iPad Air‌ and ‌iPad Pro‌ models are now expected to be announced during the second week of May.

Apple hasn’t even announced the iPad Air 6 yet, but that hasn’t stopped an accessory maker launching cases for the rumored slate, as ESR has done exactly that.

Several cases from the company (spotted by 9to5Mac) have been listed on Amazon.com, and they reveal some possible details in the process.

For one thing, the tablet is described as the ‘iPad Air 12.9 2024’, which is yet more evidence that the iPad Air 6 will be larger than its 10.9-inch predecessor. We’ve heard this claim a number of times, though some sources say a 10.9-inch model will land as well.

The fact that ESR only currently lists cases for a 12.9-inch iPad Air 6 might mean we won’t see a 10.9-inch version, but it could also simply be that it hasn’t got around to listing those yet.

As far as the design goes, the tablet pictured in the cases looks a lot like the iPad Air (2022), complete with a selfie-camera on the top edge. That’s notable as some leaks suggested the iPad Air 6 would have its selfie camera on one of the long edges, so it works better in landscape orientation.

It’s possible that this detail is wrong in the pictures, but the images also show an Apple Pencil attached to the long edge that was reportedly going to house this camera, and we’re not sure there would be space for both a camera and an Apple Pencil charger there.

So that’s two details that might be wrong. Either that or maybe the front-facing camera won’t be moving after all.

It could be launching very soon

For now, we’re not sure, and as such we’d take these images with a pinch of salt, but it’s worth noting that case makers – especially significant brands like ESR – do sometimes have advance information. So the design shown here could be accurate – or it could just be placeholder images.

In any case, the fact that these accessories have already been listed suggests that the iPad Air 6 might launch soon, and indeed leaks suggest that this new iPad could land in early May, alongside the iPad Pro (2024).

We’ve also heard from leaker Mark Gurman (writing for Bloomberg) that stock of the current iPad Air is dwindling in some stores, further suggesting that a new model is landing before long. So our camera questions should be answered soon.

The super-size iPad Air supposedly coming in a few weeks could come with a surprise: mini-LED backlights for the screen. This is the same type already in the largest iPad Pro.

It’s another reason for people to look forward to this tablet, which is expected in early May.

Leak of 12.9-inch iPad Air with mini-LED comes out of the blue

mini-LED screens use thousands of tiny LEDs to provide a backlight for the LCD that can illuminate very specific areas. The result is higher contrast, blacker blacks, improved brightness and better power efficiency.

The tech costs more than traditional backlights, so Apple has so far reserved it for high-end “Pro” products. But that’s reportedly about to change.

The upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Air will include mini-LED panels left over from making the current iPad Pro, according to Ross Young. He’s CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, and has reliable inside sources at Apple’s component-makers.

The panels will be left over because the soon-to-released version of the iPad Pro will have an OLED screen instead that has no need for backlights.

If this report is correct, the 2024 iPad Air will join two other existing Apple products with a mini-LED display: the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

While there’s been no mention connecting the tablet with mini-LED before, this leak has to be taken seriously — Young has an excellent track record. That includes correctly predicting that all iPhone 15 models would include the Dynamic Island a solid year before the handset’s launch.

More about the 2024 iPad Air

Whether the backlights will change or not, the big news about the 2024 iPad Air is that there’ll be a 12.9-inch option. The previous largest version came with a 10.9-inch display.

And that’s not the only change. The current iPad Air 5 from 2022 runs an Apple M1 processor that debuted in 2020. The upcoming version of each tablet reportedly will jump to the M3 that premiered in the latest MacBook Air.

The 2024 iPad Air launch is expected on Monday, May 6. Pricing for the 12.9- and 10.9-inch versions is currently unknown.

The rumored 12.9-inch iPad Air that is expected to be announced in May will be equipped with a mini-LED display like the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro, according to Ross Young, CEO of research firm Display Supply Chain Consultants. The existing 10.9-inch iPad Air is equipped with a standard LCD panel, and the move to mini-LED technology for the 12.9-inch model would provide increased brightness for HDR content, deeper blacks, and more.

Young revealed this information in a post shared on social media platform X today. He said the 12.9-inch iPad Air will be using leftover mini-LED display panels from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and he touted lower power consumption as another benefit.

Given that Apple does not have existing inventory of 10.9-inch mini-LED display panels, it is likely that the smaller iPad Air will remain equipped with an LCD panel.

Meanwhile, the next iPad Pro models are widely expected to transition to OLED displays, with would eliminate backlighting to allow for higher contrast ratio with true blacks, and provide other enhancements compared to LCD and mini-LED technologies. The new iPad Pro models are also expected to be announced in May.

On the App Store, Bimmy is described as a tool for testing and playing public domain/”homebrew” games created for the NES, but the app allows you to load ROMs for any NES games available for download online, such as Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong. Nintendo released the NES game console in 1985, so some of these games are nearly 40 years old. On its website, Nintendo says “downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.”

The release of Bimmy comes after Apple removed Game Boy emulator iGBA from the App Store for ripping off another emulator known as GBA4iOS, which was distributed outside the App Store. Apple said it had approved of iGBA’s functionality prior to learning that the app was a knockoff, suggesting that emulators for older Nintendo game consoles are permitted on the App Store, and Bimmy seems to be the first proof of that.

Apple updated its App Review Guidelines to permit retro game console emulators earlier this month. Apple says developers of emulators are “responsible for all such software” offered in the app, including compliance with “all applicable laws.”
