Apple TV+ scored 13 Oscar nominations but took home no trophies

[ad_1]

No Apple TV+ film won an Oscar on Sunday, despite for Martin Scorsese’s historical epic Killers of the Flower Moon earning ten Oscar nominations — including Best Picture — and Ridley Scott’s historical epic Napoleon earning three noms.

Despite the final results, Apple made it clear that it is honored to be nominated. And both films have drawn large audiences since they debuted on Apple’s streaming service.

Apple TV+ gets 10 Oscar nominations for Killers of the Flower Moon and 3 for Napoleon

From the start, Apple TV+ execs set their sights on winning industry awards to garner attention for the upstart streaming service. This year, Apple Original Films received 13 Academy Awards nominations in total for the two Apple Original Films — ten for Killers of the Flower Moon and three for Napoleon.

In addition to Best Picture, previously won by CODA, Killers of the Flower Moon got a notable nod for Lily Gladstone for Actress in a Leading Role. She already made history as the first indigenous woman to win the equivalent award from the Golden Globes, and now she’s done so again with the Oscar nomination.

And two other indigenous artists got nominations — the late guitarist and arranger Robbie Robertson for Best Original Score and Osage member Scott George for Best Original Song “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People).”

Also of note, Scorsese’s nod for Best Director makes him the most-nominated living director in history with 10 nominations, Apple said.

13 nominations, but no wins

Apple TV+ snatched just one win off 14 nominations in the Golden Globes. These are often seen as a predictor of Oscar awards, and that held true once again in 2024.

But Apple made it clear it’s proud of the nominations.

“Thank you to the Academy for these nominations that celebrate both Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese’s powerful film that has moved and inspired audiences across the globe, and Ridley Scott’s spectacular epic Napoleon, two stories that illuminate the human experience,” said Zack Van Amburg, Apple’s head of Worldwide Video.

“From the dynamic and complex performances of Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro, and the gorgeous cinematography, design, editing, and soundscape that immersed viewers in the world of the Osage Nation, to the majestic costumes, sets, and visual effects that brought Napoleonic France to vibrant life on screen, it is wonderful to see so many members of these brilliant creative teams recognized today,” he added. “We applaud you all.”

Apple historical epics faced stiff competition

Scorsese’s film, based on Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, the 2017 nonfiction book by journalist David Grann, also got a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Robert De Niro as well as a best director nomination and nods for film editing, cinematography, music and more.

Napoleon, a biopic about the rise of French conqueror and emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, received nominations for production design, costume design and visual effects.

The competition at the Academy Awards was stiff for Best Picture and other categories. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, most notably, racked up 13 Oscar nominations and took home the 2024 Best Picture Oscar. (It won the same award at the Golden Globes.)

Nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon:

  • Best Picture
  • Directing: Martin Scorsese
  • Actress in a Leading Role: Lily Gladstone
  • Actor in a Supporting Role: Robert De Niro
  • Film Editing: Thelma Schoonmaker
  • Cinematography: Rodrigo Prieto
  • Production Design: Jack Fisk, Adam Willis
  • Costume Design: Jacqueline West
  • Music (Original Score): Robbie Robertson
  • Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People), Music (Original Song): Scott George

Apple backtracks on removal of iOS 17.4 Home Screen Web Apps

iOS 17.4

Apple’s iOS 17.4 software update is coming this week, it brings major changes to the App Store in Europe and now Apple has announced that it has changed its mind on removing Home Screen Web Apps in Europe.

Previously, Apple said that it would be disabling Home Screen web Apps in Europe for “security and privacy reasons’, it has now decided that it will not be removing these apps and their functionality with iOS 17.4, after considerable backlash from consumers, developers, and also the EU regulators. You can see what they have to say below.

Previously, Apple announced plans to remove the Home Screen web apps capability in the EU as part of our efforts to comply with the DMA. The need to remove the capability was informed by the complex security and privacy concerns associated with web apps to support alternative browser engines that would require building a new integration architecture that does not currently exist in iOS.

We have received requests to continue to offer support for Home Screen web apps in iOS, therefore we will continue to offer the existing Home Screen web apps capability in the EU. This support means Home Screen web apps continue to be built directly on WebKit and its security architecture, and align with the security and privacy model for native apps on iOS.

Developers and users who may have been impacted by the removal of Home Screen web apps in the beta release of iOS in the EU can expect the return of the existing functionality for Home Screen web apps with the availability of iOS 17.4 in early March.

This is good news as it means that the full functionality and features of Hoem Screen Web Apps will still be available in Europe when the in Europe when the iOS 17.4 software update is released this week. We are expecting the update either today or tomorrow, as soon as we get some more details, we will let you know.

iOS 17.4 will remove Home Screen web apps in Europe

iOS 17.4

Apple’s iOS 17.4 is currently in beta, Apple recently released the third beta of the software and this update is bringing some major changes to the iPhone in Europe to comply with the new Digital markets App.

The update will introduce alternative app stores in Europe and alternative payment methods in apps and more, and now it has been revealed that iOS 17.4 will remove web apps from the Home Screen.

Apple is doing this for security and privacy reasons, as web apps on the Home Screen could potentially pose a risk to users, you can see more information from Apple on this below.

The iOS system has traditionally provided support for Home Screen web apps by building directly on WebKit and its security architecture. That integration means Home Screen web apps are managed to align with the security and privacy model for native apps on iOS, including isolation of storage and enforcement of system prompts to access privacy impacting capabilities on a per-site basis.

Without this type of isolation and enforcement, malicious web apps could read data from other web apps and recapture their permissions to gain access to a user’s camera, microphone or location without a user’s consent. Browsers also could install web apps on the system without a user’s awareness and consent. Addressing the complex security and privacy concerns associated with web apps using alternative browser engines would require building an entirely new integration architecture that does not currently exist in iOS and was not practical to undertake given the other demands of the DMA and the very low user adoption of Home Screen web apps. And so, to comply with the DMA’s requirements, we had to remove the Home Screen web apps feature in the EU.

You will still be able to access the website directly from your Home Screen with a bookmark, it will just not have the same features that the web apps did previously, you can find out more details over at Apple’s website at the link below. Apple is expected to release its iOS 18.4 software update in early March along with iPadOS 17.4 and a range of other updates.

Create a home automation system with Zigbee and Home Assistant

Using Home Assistant and Zima to create a home automation system

Imagine walking into your home and having everything respond to your needs without lifting a finger. Lights adjust to the perfect brightness, blinds open or close to keep your home at the ideal temperature, and your favorite music starts playing as you settle in. This isn’t a scene from a futuristic movie; it’s what today’s smart home technology can offer. At the forefront of this advancement is Home Assistant, a powerful automation platform that can turn your home into a responsive, connected environment.

Home Assistant is an open source home automation that puts local control and privacy first.  it is also perfect to run on a Raspberry Pi, local service or in this case a Zima board. Once set out Home Assistant can be the brain of your home, linking various smart devices and making them work together smoothly. To get started, you’ll need to install it, and many users choose a Zima board for this task. The Zima board is a sturdy piece of hardware that delivers excellent performance and is compatible with a wide range of devices. I found the installation process straightforward, especially after connecting a Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB dongle, which allowed my smart devices to communicate over the Zigbee protocol. Zigbee is known for being reliable and energy-efficient, which is ideal for a smart home setup.

When setting up a smart home, you’ll need to decide on a communication protocol. Zigbee and Z-Wave are two of the most popular choices. They both use mesh networks to keep your devices connected, but they operate on different frequencies and support different devices. I chose Zigbee because it supports a wider range of devices, which helps create a more unified smart home system.

Zigbee home automation system

Here are some other articles you may find of interest on the subject of automation and how you can use artificial intelligence to help make automated workflows even more effective :

Home Assistant the brains of your home automation system

The heart of Home Assistant is its central dashboard. This user-friendly interface brings all your smart devices together in one place. It makes it easy to add new devices and set up automation rules. With this dashboard, you have a powerful control panel for your entire smart home.

Home Assistant also offers a service called Home Assistant Cloud. This service allows you to access your smart home remotely and securely. It also includes features like emulated Hue integration, which means you can use voice commands with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, even if your devices don’t natively support these services.

While many people start their smart home journey with a Raspberry Pi, in the video above created by TechHut a x86 machines has been used to offer better performance and handle more devices and complex automations. This is important as you expand your smart home and add more devices. The Home Assistant platform is adaptable and powerful, and the possibilities for adding new devices and exploring advanced features are endless. Home Assistant is a robust choice for anyone interested in taking their home automation to the next level.

Zigbee

Zigbee is a specification for a suite of high-level communication protocols used to create personal area networks built from small, low-power digital radios. It’s based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, which defines the physical and media access control layers for low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPANs). The key characteristics of Zigbee include its low power consumption, low data rate, and close proximity operation, typically within 10 to 100 meters.

Zigbee is often used in applications that require a low data rate, long battery life, and secure networking. It’s particularly popular in home automation, as it enables the wireless communication between devices like smart thermostats, lighting controls, and security systems. Zigbee networks are mesh networks, meaning each node in the network can communicate with others and relay data, allowing for greater range and reliability.

One of the main advantages of Zigbee is its ability to handle a large number of nodes — up to thousands in a single network. This makes it highly scalable and suitable for complex systems. However, its low data rate means it’s not ideal for applications requiring high bandwidth, such as video streaming.

Zigbee’s security features include 128-bit encryption, which is robust for most applications. However, like any wireless technology, it’s not immune to security vulnerabilities and requires proper setup and maintenance to ensure network security.

Home Assistant has transformed many home into a more intelligent and efficient space. Its straightforward installation, wide protocol support, and intuitive dashboard make it an excellent option for both experienced tech users and those new to smart home technology. If you’re interested in enhancing your home’s capabilities, Home Assistant provides a wealth of opportunities for customization and innovation.

How to Change Your iPhone Home Screen Animation (Video)

iPhone Home Screen Animation

If you are an iPhone user who’s been longing for a touch of customization on your device, particularly on the home screen, you will be pleased to know that iOS 17 brings a refreshing change. Gone are the days of the same old animations. This video below from iReviews will guide you through the simple yet transformative process of altering your iPhone’s home screen animation, offering a breath of fresh air to your user experience.

1. A Fresh Approach to Home Screen Animation in iOS 17
First things first, let’s talk about the introduction of new animation options in iOS 17. Historically, iPhone animations have remained consistent, providing a uniform experience. However, with the latest update, users have the opportunity to bring a personal touch to their devices. Whether you crave a different look or faster transitions, iOS 17 accommodates your preferences.

2. Systemwide Animation Modifications
Interested in a comprehensive change? Here’s how you can modify animations across your entire iOS system. It starts with a simple journey into your settings. Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Motion. Here, you’ll find the option ‘Reduce Motion’, which, when enabled, reveals ‘Prefer Crossfade Transitions’. This setting swaps your standard animations for a smoother, crossfade style. Not only is this visually appealing, but it also enhances the performance on older iPhone models.

3. Tailoring Animations for Specific Apps or Home Screen
If you prefer a more targeted approach, iOS 17 allows for per-app animation customization. This feature is particularly useful for those who wish to maintain the default animations for certain applications while experimenting with new styles on others, like the home screen. To do this, venture back to Accessibility settings and scroll to ‘Per App Settings’. Here, you can add the home screen and library, enabling ‘Reduce Motion’ and ‘Prefer Crossfade Transition’ specifically for these areas. This results in a unique, personalized feel to your home screen and library.

4. Reversing Your Animation Choices
Change your mind? No problem. Reverting to the original animation style is as easy as swiping to delete the home screen from the ‘Per App Settings’ section. This flexibility ensures that you can experiment with different looks without any permanent commitment.

As you navigate through these settings, remember that your iPhone is a personal device, and its appearance should reflect your style and preferences. With these new options in iOS 17, customizing your phone is not only possible but also simple and fun.

You are now equipped with the knowledge to refresh your iPhone’s appearance with new animations. Whether you choose a systemwide change or a more specific adjustment, these steps will help you achieve a more personalized and efficient user experience. Remember, this is just one of the many features iOS 17 offers to enhance your iPhone usage.
