With the rise of ChatGPT and large language models (LLMs), AI-dedicated devices have started coming out. The Humane AI pin was widely lambasted earlier this month when it launched, and now the Rabbit r1 AI assistant is out. With rumors that Apple is delving into AI in a big way, we thought we’d check out the Rabbit r1 to see what it can do and how it measures up to an iPhone.
Priced at $200, the Rabbit is a square-shaped pocket assistant that can answer questions, look up information, interface with food delivery and ride sharing services, play music, translate languages, and more. It’s a cute little device that looks right at home with the Playdate from Panic, but most of what it can do can already be done with an iPhone.
Unlike the Humane AI Pin, the Rabbit r1 has a screen that you can interact with, which makes it much more functional. It comes with an old school scroll wheel for navigating the UI, and there’s a built-in camera for recognizing objects. It is Wi-Fi only by default, but you can add a SIM card, which is an added cost.
As a first-generation device, the r1 isn’t perfect. The setup process is bare bones without tips on how to use the device or what it’s able to do. You’ll almost certainly need to visit the website to figure out how to use it if you pick one of these up, so it could do with some on-device instruction to make using it smoother. There are, for example, hidden controls like shaking the device to get to the settings, and the settings are the only way to activate the terminal for typing.
The idea with the Rabbit r1 is to be less reliant on a smartphone, so there’s no app for it. That’s kind of a hassle if you want to get to the photos and other information that you’ve stored on it, because it’s only accessible through the Rabbit Hole website.
You can hook up services like Spotify, but it’s not super smart about suggesting songs. Asking it to play liked songs, for example, resulted in random song selections. The option to translate works well, but it can be slow, and it’s tough to get to.
In some tests, ordering food was successful, but not without hiccups. We didn’t test placing an order ourselves, but YouTuber Quinn Nelson did and the AI placed the order but didn’t ask for guidance on a tip and ended up being overly generous and tipping the highest suggested amount.
The Rabbit r1 can summarize documents, a task that it’s decent at, but that’s not really something that a smartphone can’t do. It is good at recognizing what’s around through the camera, but some things, like a classic Mac, did trip it up.

As mentioned, One UI 6.1 is a big update thanks to its AI features. Galaxy AI can summarize long texts and webpages, automatically format text in notes, translate and transcript voice recordings, and fix grammar and spelling mistakes and change the tone of messages while chatting.
That’s not all. One UI 6.1 includes features such as Circle to Search, watching normal videos in the gallery in slow motion, custom alarm backgrounds, and more ways to protect battery health.

The overall feel is one of firm, uniform support. The two sides do feel different: the ThermoSync side is a little firmer and slower moving; the other side is a little softer and bouncier. However, neither side is particularly plush, so this isn’t the right choice if you want a pillow you sink into.
I was impressed with my first impressions of the cooling properties. It’s not possible to assess temperature regulation properly without sleeping on a pillow, but I’ve also tested this ThermoSync foam more thoroughly for my Emma Premium topper review and was impressed with the cooling there.

On the Emma website, these foam layers are shown in individual casings, but on the pillow I tried out, these were absent – it was just the bare foam. We’ve noticed inconsistencies with these protective casings when testing other Emma Pillows; it seems to be a bit of a lucky dip whether you get them or not. When they’re not there, I think the bare foam feels a little too delicate, and if you were taking the foam inserts in and out, I’d be concerned about them getting damaged, or snagged in the zip.

The whole thing is wrapped in a cover made from ‘UltraDry-Plus’ fabric, which is 98 per cent polyester and 2 per cent elastane). It looks and feels like the fabric used on Emma’s mattresses, and my opinion is that it’s fine and functions well, but doesn’t seem especially luxurious. The cover can be zipped off and washed at 60C, which is hot enough to kill dust mites. The interior foam layers can’t be washed, but that’s standard for foam pillows.

ThermoSync foam is cool to touch
The idea is that you can flip this pillow to give two different feels, thanks to the different foam layers. So let’s start with the grey ThermoSync side. I judged this to be a really firm foam. Concentrated pressure – for example from an elbow – went in easily, but if I pressed my whole hand (or head) against it, I struggled to make much of an indentation.
The feel is fairly responsive; you won’t sink into it, but it does take a moment to return to its original shape once pressure is removed. This side was a bit too solid for my preferences.
However, I was more impressed with the temperature regulation properties. There are lots of claims made about cooling foams, but Emma’s ThermoSync really seems to work. The surface of the foam actually feels cool to the touch, and beneath my head on when I lay on it in the Emma showroom. The real test of this is to sleep on it, of course, but I’m optimistic based on what I saw during my hands-on time with this pillow, and also based on my time reviewing the Emma Premium topper, which uses the same foam.
The other side doesn’t have these thermoregulating properties and promises a softer feel. The difference in firmness is noticeable compared to the grey side, although I’d still consider it to be medium-firm – don’t expect something ultra-squishy. It’s also springier and more responsive than the other side. When you remove pressure, it returns to shape immediately.
There’s nothing on the cover to indicate which side is which, so you’ll need to figure it out based on touch, or unzip the pillow to peek inside.

With all three foam inserts in place, this is a high-loft pillow. I found it far too high when lying on my back and stomach, and also too high for side sleeping. For context, I’m 5ft 8, not especially broad shouldered, and I tend to just sleep with one pillow. Broad-shouldered side sleepers might need a pillow of this depth for proper support, but I suspect most people will want to take the central insert out to get it to a comfortable height. The fact that this pillow is easily adjustable is a win, though.
Because it’s foam, it doesn’t need re-plumping, and should provide consistent support all night.
✅ You sleep hot: The ThermoSync side of the Emma Premium pillow shows a lot of promise when it comes to keeping the sleeper cool. That’s not the case with all foam pillows.
✅ You prefer a firmly supportive pillow: Although one side is a little plusher than the other, the overall feel here is of firm, consistent support.
✅ You’re a broad-shouldered side sleeper: With all the foam inserts in place the Emma Premium pillow is pretty tall. It can be adjusted to make it suitable for different body frames and sleep positions, but should appeal in particular to those seeking a chunky pillow.
Don’t buy it if…
❌ You prefer a squishy pillow: One side of the Emma Premium is softer than the other, but neither is particularly plush. Something like the REM-Fit 500 Cool Gel Pillow has more give, and you still get those cooling features.
❌ You prefer a traditional pillow: Moulded foam isn’t for everyone. If you want a plump-able pillow, check out the Emma Premium Microfibre pillow, which is filled with down-alternative stuffing. You can still remove inserts to adjust the height.
❌ You’re on a budget: If the (admittedly high) price tag is a bit much, there are plenty of cheaper options that offer similar features and cost less. Our best pillow guide is a good place to start.
Samsung has been attempting to blur the lines between flagship and mid-range Galaxy smartphones for the last couple of years, and the company may have taken the most giant leap toward that goal yet with the Galaxy A55.
The Galaxy A55 is the most exciting phone in the lineup in recent memory. Samsung has sprinkled plenty of upgrades that we expected and some that we didn’t, and after 24 hours with it, I have some thoughts to offer on the Korean giant’s latest premium mid-range phone.
Spoiler alert: the Galaxy A55 has positively surprised me in several ways. Right out of the box, you can feel the difference made by Samsung’s decision to use more premium materials on every side. The Galaxy A54 was the first phone in the lineup with a glass back, but its plastic frame took away some of the allure.
Our initial Galaxy A55 hands-on experience is mostly positive
Samsung has fixed that by opting to use a metallic frame on the Galaxy A55, in addition to upgrading the display glass to Gorilla Glass Victus+ from the A54’s Gorilla Glass 5. The result is a phone that feels no less than a flagship in the hand.
However, the bezels continue to be obnoxiously big. Samsung has also somewhat ruined the metal frame with a slightly rough finish. The rough finish covers all of the frame except the area around the volume and power buttons. Thanks to Samsung’s Key Island design, the frame is raised around the buttons, and the raised part has the smooth finish that we see on Samsung’s flagship smartphones.
The Galaxy A55’s performance appears to benefit from optimization that was sorely lacking on its predecessors, at least as far as the out-of-the-box experience is concerned. The A55 uses a new Exynos chip–the Exynos 1480–that has a GPU designed in partnership with AMD, and it seems to be doing its part in making the user interface feel quick and smooth.
The 12GB of RAM on our review unit may be helping as well, though I’m hoping the variants with 8GB of RAM will perform similarly. I also hope game developers will work quickly to optimize their games for the Exynos 1480: since this is a new chip, Call of Duty, which remains one of the most popular games on mobile platforms, only lets you use the low graphic settings at this moment.
I also noticed some lag in the camera app. Changing the zoom level while video recording is active takes a second or two sometimes, which just isn’t acceptable in a mid-range phone with specs like the A55’s. Samsung will likely make optimizations with software updates, but I would have prefered it to not be an issue in the first place, especially given how the A55 otherwise performs remarkably well.
I haven’t been able to test much else on the Galaxy A55 in the short time it has been my primary device, so you will have to wait for our full review to find out what’s good about this phone and what isn’t. The initial vibe is a positive one, though.
Apple’s M3 MacBook Air models are in stores as of today, so we picked one up to test it out, see what’s new, answer reader questions, and determine whether it’s worth buying or upgrading to.
The MacBook Air is available in 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch sizes, just like the prior-generation versions. Apple did not introduce notable design changes this time around, so most of what’s new is on the inside.
An M3 chip is the main upgrade, and this is the same chip that Apple already used in the 14-inch MacBook Pro. When we benchmarked our test unit with an 8-core GPU and 10-core GPU, we got a Geekbench single-core score of 3106 and a multi-core score of 11690. For comparison’s sake, the M1 MacBook Air scored 2335/8314 and the M2 MacBook Air scored 2595/9745, so that’s a decent boost in CPU performance.
Compared to the M1, single-core M3 performance is up 28 percent, and multi-core performance is up 34 percent. Compared to the M2, both the single-core and multi-core CPU tests came in at 18 percent higher. As for Metal GPU scores, the M1 earned a score of 32117, the M2 was at 45651, and the M3 was at 46920.
Overall, CPU and GPU performance have improved notably over the M1 and more modestly over the M2. It’s worth noting that the M3 also has hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading that are of use for 3D rendering and will eventually make games on the Mac more realistic. AV1 decode should improve streaming from services that support the codec.
There are a couple of other improvements to note, including Wi-Fi 6E support for connecting to 6GHz networks. You might not see too many 6GHz networks just yet, but it’s a good future proofing feature if you don’t already have a 6E router. The M3 models support two external displays in clamshell mode rather than just one, call clarity is better than before, and there’s a new finish on the midnight model to cut down on fingerprints.
Pricing on the 13-inch MacBook Air starts at $1099 and pricing on the 15-inch model starts at $1299. It’s not worth upgrading to the new machine if you already have an M2 MacBook Air because those machines already have the 2022/2023 design, but if you have an M1 or any Intel model and are looking for a new solution, the M3 MacBook Air is worth considering.
In terms of upgrades, if you’re just using the MacBook Air for day-to-day tasks like web browsing and email, you don’t need to shell out extra money for more memory, a better GPU (13-inch model), or more storage, but if you plan to use it for more system intensive tasks, it’s worth looking at some of those upgrades.
