My Favorite Things an Amazon Echo Show Can Do (2024)

[ad_1]

There are a ton of tricks that smart displays can do. But not all of them are created equal or are worth doing on this style of advice.

The basics are easy—just about anyone knows how handy it is to ask any smart speaker or smart display to tell you the weather or play music. And you should! It’s their best use case, especially since smart displays like the Echo Show can give you more weather details onscreen. But that’s not all these handy devices do, and for the price you should get the most out of any smart display you buy.

Amazon’s Echo Shows have their own special tricks and ways to activate them. Here are my three favorite uses for an Echo Show and how to fix my least favorite feature. Do you think you would prefer another system? Don’t forget to check out our guides to the Best Smart Speakers and How to Set Up Your Smart Home.

Play With Widgets

Widgets are my favorite casual feature of Echo Shows. They’re little squares with shortcut content that you can customize, ranging from a sticky note or calendar to managing your smart home, quick access to certain music, and so much more.

Originally, they were only on the massive Echo Show 15, but they’re now available on the Echo Show 8 and 10 as well. On the Echo Show 15, the widgets are constantly onscreen thanks to the large real estate, and there’s a widget panel that can fit up to 10 widgets. For the Echo Shows 8 and 10, they appear in the slideshow that rotates onscreen. You can display up to four widgets on the Echo Show 8 and up to six on the Echo Show 10.

I love using mine to put a calendar view, my smart-home favorites, and the weather in an easy-to-see place. They’re great for customizing your smart-home control if you want your device to focus on that; the Echo Hub (8/10, WIRED Recommends) depends entirely on widgets as a smart-home-focused device.

Echo Shows also have a camera at the top of the screen that can be used for both video calls and as an indoor security camera–well, sort of. There are two main features under this umbrella: Live Feed, which allows you to view live feeds happening from an Echo Show device, and Home Monitoring, which you can use with other smart-home devices and set up routines.

You can ask any Echo Show to give you the live feed of another Show device, as long as you know the name of the device (or you can just choose it from the device list if you don’t want to use voice commands). This is an easy way to quickly check in on say, pets and kids, without a full-blown security camera. The device will alert anyone in the room that someone is using the Echo Show to monitor the room, so it’s not as discreet as a true security camera.

Shell Energy’s Superfast Fibre Plus broadband is now only £25.99 per month and gives you a free £50 Amazon gift card

[ad_1]

Looking for a cheap, reliable, and fast broadband deal that won’t break the bank? Then Shell Energy broadband’s latest broadband offer could be perfect.

Shell Energy Broadband’s popular Superfast Fibre Plus tariff is available for just £25.99 per month. Plus, as well as being affordable, this particular broadband package comes with a £50 gift card that can be redeemed on Amazon. You’ll get this once your connection is online and the validation period has passed.

To be eligible to receive this deal, you’ll need to take out an 18-month contract and pay an upfront fee of £10.55.

With this broadband package, you’ll be able to make the most of average download speeds of 67Mbps and you get the company’s new ‘Wi-Fi 6 hub’ included. For this reason, we think it’s a great choice for small to medium households that want to download, stream in HD and casually browse across multiple devices.

However, there are a couple of things to be aware of if you want to take out this deal. Firstly, Shell Energy’s broadband customers have recently been purchased by TalkTalk. As a result, you’ll be automatically transferred to TalkTalk at some point during the duration of your contract (this will be free and all you’ll need to do is pay your bill as normal). Secondly, this broadband deal expires at midnight on 17th April.

This week’s best Shell Energy Broadband deal

Why choose Shell Energy for your broadband?

You may know Shell Energy better as an energy supplier, but for the past few years, the company has also been one of the country’s most popular broadband providers. It’s easy to see why this has been the case, too. After all, the company regularly offers fast download speeds at affordable prices. Thanks to this, Shell Energy broadband has won several industry awards, including a ‘great value’ award from Good Housekeeping in 2023.

However, as popular as Shell Energy broadband has been over the past few years, Shell Energy UK was recently bought by Octopus, with the incoming energy company selling Shell Energy UK’s broadband customers to TalkTalk.

As a result, in the coming months, all Shell Energy broadband customers will be moved over to TalkTalk free of charge. There’s no need to be worried though, your existing contract will remain valid and you’ll just need to keep paying your bill as usual. You’ll then be notified when it’s time to be transferred to TalkTalk. At this point, the move will happen automatically and you don’t need to do anything. In fact, Shell Energy uses some of TalkTalk’s technology behind the scenes, so the transfer process should be seamless.

We also think that TalkTalk is one of the UK’s best broadband providers and we’ve consistently highlighted some great broadband deals from TalkTalk in the past.

Unsure whether this deal is right for you or would you like to compare it to others on the market? Check out our guide to the best broadband deals or enter your postcode into the widget below. We can then show you all the best deals available at your address.

Samsung Galaxy S24 phones are on sale for record-low prices at Amazon

[ad_1]

Samsung makes some of the best Android phones you can get right now and the latest models have dropped to all-time-low prices. If you’ve been waiting for a good deal on the high-end Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, you’re in luck — the handset with 256GB of storage is $150 off and down to $1,150. The Galaxy S24+ is also on sale for $850 right now.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has dropped to its lowest price to date of $1,150.

$1,150 at Amazon

We gave the Galaxy S24 Ultra a score of 89 in our review. We found it to be very expensive (this discount helps mitigate that!) and the design and lack of Qi 2 support were drawbacks. However, we appreciated the camera upgrades and felt the S24 Ultra delivered great performance and offered terrific battery life. It often had a 50 percent charge remaining after 24 hours of regular use, thanks to the large battery and power efficiency gains afforded by the new processor.

One other major thing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset powers is a host of on-device generative AI (GAI) features, the big selling point for the Galaxy lineup this year as Samsung tries to compete with Google Pixel devices on that front. An interpreter mode can translate languages during calls, while the Chat Assist tool can check the grammar, spelling and tone of your messages before sending them. There are also AI-powered options for image editing and search. While the AI tools more or less work as expected, we felt that they’re not quite as polished as Google’s versions. Nevertheless, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is our pick for the best premium Android phone.

The Galaxy S24+ also has a $150 discount right now. That too marks a record low for a version with 256GB of storage — the handset currently costs $850. Like its smaller sibling, the S24, the S24+ earned a score of 87 in our review. We appreciated the battery life and (for the most part) the GAI tools, though we felt that low-light photography performance was somewhat lacking. Those who prefer foldables may be more interested in the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Again, that’s $150 off at $850 for 256GB of storage. However, it’s $50 more than the lowest price we’ve seen for the handset thus far.

Apple’s New 13-Inch M3 MacBook Air Hits $999 Low Price on Amazon

[ad_1]

Apple’s brand new 13-inch 256GB M3 MacBook Air has hit $999.00 today on Amazon, down from $1,099.00. This sale is available in Midnight, but you might be able to get in Space Gray depending on stock, which has been fluctuating today. B&H Photo is matching this sale.

macbook air new blueNote: MacRumors is an affiliate partner with some of these vendors. When you click a link and make a purchase, we may receive a small payment, which helps us keep the site running.

This is a new all-time low price on the 13-inch M3 MacBook Air, and it accompanies a similarly steep discount on the 15-inch model that we started tracking last week. In that sale, you can get the 15-inch 256GB M3 MacBook Air for $1,204.00, a $95 discount.

These MacBook Air models just launched earlier in the month, coming in both 13-inch and 15-inch sizes. Both of the new MacBook Air machines include the M3 chip and focus on internal upgrades. Apple did not change the design of the MacBook Air with the 2024 update, using the same design that was first introduced in 2022.

Because of these new MacBook Air models, we’re also tracking record low prices on previous generation models. Best Buy currently has both the 13-inch and 15-inch M2 MacBook Air at all-time low prices, with up to $300 off select computers.

Head to our full Deals Roundup to get caught up with all of the latest deals and discounts that we’ve been tracking over the past week.

Breville’s Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro is 20 percent off on Amazon

[ad_1]

The Amazon Big Spring Sale might be over, but there are still plenty of deals worth shopping across the site. Anyone looking to upgrade their meals will want to check out the 20 percent discounts on Breville’s Smart Ovens, including the Air Fryer Pro. Our pick for 2024’s best air fryer toaster oven is down to $320 from $400 — its Black Friday low.

Breville

Breville’s Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro allows you to cook almost anything you want. It has 13 cooking settings, ranging from typical ones like broil, bake and warm to more specific options like cookies, proof and dehydrate. Taking up one cubic foot of space, the Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro is basically a second oven that can make perfectly crispy fries. In fact, it’s so big you could fit a 14-pound turkey, 9×13 sheets or a Dutch Oven inside it.

Worth noting: Despite having the title “Smart Oven,” Breville’s Air Fryer Pro, it’s not smart in the way most things these days are. Breville’s Joule Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro is the one to go with if you want an actual “smart” device — as in one that can talk to Alexa. It will notify you when your food is done and offer guided recipes in an app, among other perks. Plus, it’s also 20 percent off right now, down to $440 from $550.

Amazon Fire TV 32-inch 2-series TV review: a small TV that gives great value, but struggles elsewhere

[ad_1]

The 32-inch Amazon Fire TV 2-series is the entry level series in Amazon Fire TV range, below the Amazon Fire TV 4-series and Amazon Fire TV Omni QLED. It comes with a 720p panel and is priced at $199 / £249 / around AU$305. It is also available in a 40-inch size with a 1080p Full HD panel.

The Amazon 2-series has plenty to live up to following the Amazon Omni QLED, one of the best TVs of 2023, and our budget TV of the year at the TechRadar Choice Awards. Unfortunately, the Amazon 2-series doesn’t quite have the same wow factor as its more premium counterpart and faces tough competition in the best 32-inch TV category, although it does provide a very budget-friendly option for those needing a small screen.

The Apple Watch SE is back on sale for $189 during the Amazon Spring Sale

[ad_1]

The Amazon Big Spring Sale isn’t over yet, and new deals are still popping up all over the site on everything from outdoor cameras to smartwatches—including our favorite budget Apple Watch for 2024. The second-generation Apple Watch SE is 24 percent off, dropping to $189 from $249. It’s not the device’s record-low price, but the $60 off brings it pretty close.

Apple

The second-gen Apple Watch SE garnered an 89 in our review thanks to the comprehensive features it offers for much less money than the company’s alternatives. The smartwatch has all the usual options, like heart-rate monitoring, crash detection, and emergency calling. The retina display offers up to 1,000 nits brightness, and the battery lasts 18 hours.

If you’re considering buying an Apple Watch SE, one thing to keep in mind is that it’s not IPX6 rated for dust resistance like the Series 8 and Ultra. However, it is water resistant up to 50 meters.
