Should Apple Kill Siri and Start Over?

Few features have promised to revolutionize the way we interact with our Apple devices as much as Siri, the company’s ubiquitous virtual assistant. Launched in 2011, Siri was introduced as heralding a new era in human-computer interaction, offering an intuitive voice-controlled interface for accessing information, scheduling appointments, sending messages, and much more. The vision was grand: A personal assistant in your pocket, capable of understanding and acting upon a wide array of voice commands with ease and accuracy. So what happened?

Enthusiasm for Siri has undeniably waned in the intervening years. Despite regular updates and improvements from Apple, Siri has struggled to keep pace with its advancing rivals, and in an era of generative AI chatbots and large language models, Siri’s failings have only been magnified. Issues ranging from misinterpreted commands to limited contextual understanding have not only hindered Siri’s usability but have also led to an almost universal perception of the virtual assistant as a source of user frustration rather than assistance. This persistent underperformance begs the question: Is it time for Apple to kill Siri and start over?

Siri’s Birth Pangs

Siri’s conceptual roots at Apple can be traced back to the company’s early exploration of human-computer interaction. Thirty years ago, Apple commissioned a group of employees to create a video showing how in the future humans might interact with computers using spoken language. The video, known as “Knowledge Navigator,” featured a professor chatting with a virtual assistant to perform everyday tasks and academic research. In one of the tasks, the professor asks the assistant to search for a five-year-old publication. The assistant pulls up an article dated 2006, suggesting the video is supposed to be set in September 2011.

The video was criticized at the time for being an unrealistic portrayal of the capacities of a virtual assistant in the foreseeable future. Yet the demonstration inspired developers Adam Cheyer, Dag Kittlaus, and Tom Gruber, who began AI research on virtual assistants at SRI International, a DARPA-funded research laboratory in Menlo Park, California. Their work would result in a spin-out called Siri, named by Kittlaus after a co-worker in Norway. (Siri is short for Sigrid, which has its origins in Old Norse for words meaning “victory” and “beautiful”.)

In February 2010, Kittlaus launched Siri as an app on Apple’s App Store. Steve Jobs soon began playing with the app and was impressed with how it allowed the user to search the internet by voice. A few weeks later, Apple acquired the start-up. Siri’s AI backend was in place, while its voice recognition technology would be supplied by Nuance Communications. Apple subsequently released its Siri virtual assistant (in beta) for the iPhone 4S in October 2011, just one month later than the fictional future in which Knowledge Navigator had been originally envisioned.

Fiction vs. Reality

Apple marketed Siri as more than just a tool — it was your intelligent assistant ready to help with a variety of tasks. Whether setting reminders, sending texts, making phone calls, or finding information online, Siri aimed to streamline it all with a simple voice command. There was nothing like it at the time and the initial results were impressive, but the underlying promise was that Siri would not only understand you but also learn from you, becoming more efficient and personalized over time.

Regular iOS updates in the intervening years have worked towards making Siri more effective and realizing its original promise. Whenever a new iOS feature comes along, Apple usually ensures that it works with Siri, and these days it can be used to identify songs, get driving directions, send money via Apple Pay, and control HomeKit products, to name just a few of its skills. In 2021, Apple announced that Siri would work offline by default – whenever possible, it would process user requests on-device, with the same quality of server-based speech recognition.

However, even now, the assistant that was supposed to understand context and grow with the user still faces significant challenges with context, understanding, and integration, regardless of whether it pings Apple’s servers or processes requests locally. Many Apple device owners often say it struggles with even basic commands. Indeed, many users believe that, at least in some areas, Siri’s abilities have gotten worse over time, especially since the release of iOS 17.

Michael Tsai’s blog has done a good job of recording users’ more recent frustrations with Siri. Here are just a handful of serial issues some users have recently reported:

  • Setting timers instead of alarms.
  • Bungling music requests (even for purchases that Siri has local access to).
  • Delayed responses over fast data connections.
  • Nonsense responses to conversion requests.
  • Creating notes instead of reminders.
  • Acknowledging requests without acting on them.
  • Overwrought punctuation when dictating.
  • Inability to consistently control smart devices.

The list could go on. But has Siri really gotten more stupid? Could most issues be put down to fringe use cases, or over-expectations in a brave new world of chatbots powered by immensely resource-heavy large-language models? Consider what Walt Mossberg said in 2016, writing for The Verge:

Before Apple bought it, Siri was on the road to being a robust digital assistant that could do many things, and integrate with many services — even though it was being built by a startup with limited funds and people. After Apple bought Siri, the giant company seemed to treat it as a backwater, restricting it to doing only a few, slowly increasing number of tasks, like telling you the weather, sports scores, movie and restaurant listings, and controlling the device’s functions.

…On too many occasions, Siri either gets things wrong, doesn’t know the answer, or can’t verbalize it. Instead, it shows you a web search result, even when you’re not in a position to read it.

Many users would agree that very little has changed in the past eight years.

AI Hopes on the Horizon

Apple’s next major software update, iOS 18, is rumored to include new generative AI features for Siri that will assist users in their daily lives. “Generative AI” is the key term here. The concept surged in popularity in late 2022, when OpenAI released its ChatGPT chatbot that can reply to questions and prompts with unnervingly nuanced human-like responses. The company has since expanded into generative AI tools for images and videos.

One leaker has suggested that Apple is planning to use large-language models to entirely revamp Siri and turn it into the “ultimate virtual assistant.” Rumors suggest that improvements could come in the form of better natural conversation capabilities (potentially aided by an improved iPhone microphone) and improved user personalization. The new functionality is expected to be available across devices, so Siri may retain conversation information from one device to another. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, one of the specific features Apple is developing is an improved interaction between Siri and the Messages app, which would let Siri auto-complete sentences more effectively and answer complex questions.

However, more recent reports have claimed that Apple is not planning to debut its own generative AI chatbot. Apple has reportedly held discussions with companies such as Google, OpenAI, and Baidu about potential generative AI partnerships, but Apple’s first set of new AI features in iOS 18 will not rely on cloud servers at all, according to Gurman.

Move Over Siri?

Whether or not a groundbreaking incarnation of Apple’s virtual assistant is on the cards, given the persistent issues that have tarnished Siri’s reputation, could a new name and branding help Apple distance itself from past failures?

The idea of rebranding Siri into something entirely new has been floated by some observers in the tech world. Josh Johnson‘s blunt assessment echoes a common sentiment: “I honestly think Apple should kill the Siri brand. I’m not sure it can recover from the universal understanding that it’s just not good.” He suggests the introduction of an LLM-powered assistant under a new name, proposing a fresh start to overcome the negative associations that currently plague Siri.

Ty Belisle supports a drastic transformation, noting, “I’ve thought they should make a very bold ‘Siri 2.0’ announcement, but it’s true the name Siri is so spoiled that they should ditch it.” He also points out the practical benefits of a new name, such as reducing accidental activations — a problem that shorter names like “Siri” often face.

John Gruber‘s perspective underscores the importance of first impressions and the long-term effects of Siri’s underwhelming performance: “First impressions really matter, but in Siri’s case, it’s over a decade of lived experience.” If Apple has significantly improved its voice technology, he argues, it should be introduced under a new brand to signify a clean break from the past.

These voices present a compelling case for rebranding, but Apple would face significant risks if it introduced a new virtual assistant. Siri is deeply integrated into Apple’s ecosystem and recognized worldwide. Abandoning the brand could confuse and alienate existing users who are accustomed to the name and functionality, despite its flaws. That being said, unlike Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s assistant, Siri has become the butt of numerous jokes. A new name and persona for the assistant could potentially revitalize its image, but Apple would have to ensure that any new product lives up to its promises, otherwise another misstep could be potentially disastrous.

The Nest Cam uses AI to discern between people, animals and vehicles. It can send you alerts via the Google Home app, and you won’t need a subscription for that. You will need a Nest Aware plan if you want up to 60 days of video history. Otherwise, Google will offer three free hours of event video history. Handily, if you have a Wi-Fi outage, up to an hour of event recordings will be stored on the device itself.

There’s a two-way audio function, so you can chat with house guests if you’re not home. In the event of an unwanted visitor, you can contact emergency services directly from the Google Home app if you’re a Nest Aware member who is perhaps using a tablet instead of a phone. You’ll be able to view live video feeds on compatible smart displays and smart TVs too.

Nest Aware subscribers can receive notifications when familiar faces are recognized. There’s also the option to set up home and away routines so the camera doesn’t capture video while you’re at your place.

Apple’s ‘Mission Impossible’ promo fails

April 18: Today in Apple history: Apple pays $15 million for Mission: Impossible movie tie-in April 18, 1996: Apple unveils a massive $15 million promotional tie-in for the Mission: Impossible movie starring Tom Cruise.

Designed to promote the PowerBook, which Cruise uses in the spy flick, the marketing campaign comes at a particularly bad time. Attempting to climb back into the black after reporting its largest quarterly loss ever, Apple is in the middle of trying to perform its very own impossible mission. And that’s just the start of the problems.

1996 stands as probably the nadir of Apple’s nasty ’90s. Just a couple of weeks before the Mission: Impossible promo campaign, Apple reported a quarterly loss of $740 million. The shocking scale of the loss — with more than half coming from $1 billion in unsold products — revealed a company in far worse shape than previously thought.

The Mission: Impossible deal was an attempt to imbue Apple with some much-needed cool.

As part of the expensive campaign, Apple launched a “Mission: Impossible — The Web Adventure” site, an early example of online movie advertising. (You can still see Apple’s Mission: Impossible site, although the game sadly no longer works.)

The deal also ensured that the PowerBook 5300c got screen time in the movie. Unfortunately, Apple and Paramount Pictures signed the deal so late that Cupertino got no input on the script’s tech elements.

As a result, the Mac shown in the movie uses a command-line interface instead of Mac OS. That made it look way behind the Windows 95 operating system then running on PCs.

Even worse, when a particularly tough job turns up later in the movie, the Mission: Impossible team’s resident computer expert advises the use of nonexistent “Thinking Machines laptops.”

Apparently, only those fictional computers could get the job done. Ouch!

PowerBook 5300: On-screen and on fire, but not on store shelves

A final problem dogged Apple’s Mission: Impossible promo campaign: The PowerBook 5300 wasn’t available to buy when the movie hit theaters. And, soon after the first 1,000 PowerBook 5300 units shipped to dealers around the United States, news broke that two production units caught fire — one at the home of an Apple programmer, the other at Apple’s factory in China.

“The main hallmark for Apple is ease of use,” wrote Pieter Hartsook, editor of The Hartsook Letter, at the time. “If your machine doesn’t work, it’s not easy to use.”

Apple issued a recall on the 100 PowerBook 5300s already sold, replacing the computers with another model. Unfortunately, the replacements packed only two-thirds the hard drive capacity of their predecessors. That forced Apple to lower the price of the laptop by $100.

As a result, moviegoers who saw the PowerBook 5300 plastered on the silver screen could not buy the computer. Not that many people could afford the pricey machines: The top-end PowerBook 5300ce came with a $6,500 price tag, making it the most expensive Apple laptop ever. (Adjusted for inflation, that’s nearly $13,000 today.)

Somehow, Apple pulls off the impossible

The Mission: Impossible promo deal certainly failed to work out as Apple planned. However, 1996 marked the beginning of a major turnaround for the company. Before long, Cupertino abandoned its disastrous clone Mac concept, enjoyed a few surprisingly big hits, and — most significantly of all — brought Steve Jobs back into the fold with the NeXT acquisition.

What If Your AI Girlfriend Hated You?

It seems as though we’ve arrived at the moment in the AI hype cycle where no idea is too bonkers to launch. This week’s eyebrow-raising AI project is a new twist on the romantic chatbot—a mobile app called AngryGF, which offers its users the uniquely unpleasant experience of getting yelled at via messages from a fake person. Or, as cofounder Emilia Aviles explained in her original pitch: “It simulates scenarios where female partners are angry, prompting users to comfort their angry AI partners” through a “gamified approach.” The idea is to teach communication skills by simulating arguments that the user can either win or lose depending on whether they can appease their fuming girlfriend.

The central appeal of a relationship-simulating chatbot, I’ve always assumed, is that they’re easier to interact with than real-life humans. They have no needs or desires of their own. There’s no chance they’ll reject you or mock you. They exist as a sort of emotional security blanket. So the premise of AngryGF amused me. You get some of the downsides of a real-life girlfriend—she’s furious!!—but none of the upsides. Who would voluntarily use this?

Obviously, I downloaded AngryGF immediately. (It’s available, for those who dare, on both the Apple App Store and Google Play.) The app offers a variety of situations where a girlfriend might ostensibly be mad and need “comfort.” They include “You put your savings into the stock market and lose 50 percent of it. Your girlfriend finds out and gets angry” and “During a conversation with your girlfriend, you unconsciously praise a female friend by mentioning that she is beautiful and talented. Your girlfriend becomes jealous and angry.”

The app sets an initial “forgiveness level” anywhere between 0 and 100 percent. You have 10 tries to say soothing things that tilt the forgiveness meter back to 100. I chose the beguilingly vague scenario called “Angry for no reason,” in which the girlfriend is, uh, angry for no reason. The forgiveness meter was initially set to a measly 30 percent, indicating I had a hard road ahead of me.

Reader: I failed. Although I genuinely tried to write messages that would appease my hopping-mad fake girlfriend, she continued to interpret my words in the least generous light and accuse me of not paying attention to her. A simple “How are you doing today?” text from me—Caring! Considerate! Asking questions!—was met with an immediately snappy answer: “Oh, now you care about how I’m doing?” Attempts to apologize only seemed to antagonize her further. When I proposed a dinner date, she told me that wasn’t sufficient but also that I better take her “somewhere nice.”

It was such an irritating experience that I snapped and told this bitchy bot that she was annoying. “Great to know that my feelings are such a bother to you,” the sarcast-o-bot replied. When I decided to try again a few hours later, the app informed me that I’d need to upgrade to the paid version to unlock more scenarios for $6.99 a week. No thank you.

At this point I wondered if the app was some sort of avant-garde performance art. Who would even want their partner to sign up? I would not be thrilled if I knew my husband considered me volatile enough to require practicing lady-placation skills on a synthetic shrew. While ostensibly preferable to AI girlfriend apps seeking to supplant IRL relationships, an app designed to coach men to get better at talking to women by creating a robot woman who is a total killjoy might actually be even worse.

I called Aviles, the cofounder, to try to understand what, exactly, was happening with AngryGF. She’s a Chicago-based social media marketer who says that the app was inspired by her own past relationships, where she was unimpressed by her partners’ communication skills. Her schtick seemed sincere. “You know men,” she says. “They listen, but then they don’t take action.”

Aviles describes herself as the app’s cofounder but isn’t particularly well-versed in the nuts and bolts of its creation. (She says a team of “between 10 and 20” people work on the app but that she is the only founder willing to put her name on the product.) She was able to specify that the app is built on top of OpenAI’s GPT-4 and wasn’t made with any additional custom training data like actual text messages between significant others.

“We didn’t really directly consult with a relationship therapist or anything like that,” she says. No kidding.

DJI’s new backup battery can power small appliances, charge your drone

DJI is entering the portable power station market in the US and Europe with the launch of the Power 1000 and Power 500 aimed at home users or road warriors. The devices (released in China at the end of last year) can be used to power small appliances or charge devices like laptops or drones, and work in concert with solar panels to provide power on the road.

The Power 1000 (13kg or 29 pounds) has a 1,024 Wh capacity and can output up to 2,200W — enough to run a home microwave oven for about 1.3 hours and a car refrigerator for 19 hours, or charge a drone up to 12 times. The Power 500 (7.3 kg or 16.3 pounds) delivers 512 Wh of capacity and 1,000W of output for half the price.

The larger version supports 1200W fast recharge or 600W standard recharging (540W and 270W for the smaller version). Both can be fast-charged in 70 minutes for a 100 percent battery or 50 minutes to an 80 percent charge. Along with standard AC plugs, both have a pair of USB-C PD output ports that support 140W/100W charging for the Power 1000/Power 500 — enough for most laptops.

The market is fairly saturated with such devices (Jackery, Bluetti, Anker, others), but DJI is pitching this as an ideal way to charge its drones and other products. Released in China in December, it was already available in the US at Amazon and elsewhere via the grey market.

The Power 1000 is now on sale for $1,000 at DJI’s store, while the Power 500 costs $500. You can add a 120W Zignes solar panel for $299. For the latter, you’ll need DJI’s Power Solar Panel Adapter Module or DJI Power Car Power Outlet to SDC Power Cable.

13 Best Coffee Grinders (2024): Conical, Flat Burr, Blade, and Hand Grinders

What Is a Conical, Flat, or Blade Grinder?

Our list consists mostly of conical-burr grinders. In a conical grinder, coffee beans are crushed and ground between two rings of burrs. They deliver a finer, much more consistent grind than you’d get with a traditional blade grinder, even the nicest ones.

Flat-burr grinders are similar, but they’re typically more expensive. In these, the burrs are laid on top of each other, and the beans pass through them as they grind. The grinder action pushes the grounds out of one end, instead of relying on gravity like a conical-burr grinder, and the beans spend more time in contact with the burrs. This results in a more consistent grind, but for home brewers, conical-burr grinders are just as good—even if they require more maintenance and don’t result in consistent down-to-the-micron-scale grounds.

Blade grinders have a chopping blade that spins around like a food processor. But blades don’t produce even results. Some of your coffee will be fine powder at the bottom, and at the top you’ll have bits too large for even French press. The result is an inconsistent, unpredictable brew. These grinders are cheap, and yes, using fresh beans in a blade grinder is far better than buying ground coffee. (You can learn how to shake the beans to even your grind just a little. If you can afford it, we highly recommend going with one of the burr grinders we’ve listed. There’s a reason why they cost a little more than a budget burr grinder. The machinery in a high-quality burr grinder is a bit more complicated, and it’s built to withstand greater wear and tear. In cheap burr grinders, the burrs will typically get blunt from regular use, and the flimsier motors may burn out in a matter of months.

12.9-Inch iPad Air Now Rumored to Feature Mini-LED Display

The rumored 12.9-inch iPad Air that is expected to be announced in May will be equipped with a mini-LED display like the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro, according to Ross Young, CEO of research firm Display Supply Chain Consultants. The existing 10.9-inch iPad Air is equipped with a standard LCD panel, and the move to mini-LED technology for the 12.9-inch model would provide increased brightness for HDR content, deeper blacks, and more.

Young revealed this information in a post shared on social media platform X today. He said the 12.9-inch iPad Air will be using leftover mini-LED display panels from the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and he touted lower power consumption as another benefit.

Given that Apple does not have existing inventory of 10.9-inch mini-LED display panels, it is likely that the smaller iPad Air will remain equipped with an LCD panel.

Meanwhile, the next iPad Pro models are widely expected to transition to OLED displays, with would eliminate backlighting to allow for higher contrast ratio with true blacks, and provide other enhancements compared to LCD and mini-LED technologies. The new iPad Pro models are also expected to be announced in May.

A second chance for an underappreciated console

We are living in a second golden age for console gaming. Active communities, open developer tools and easy distribution have given new life to many once-dead systems. If there’s one company who deserves the most thanks for bringing a love for ’80s and ’90s cartridge-based console gaming back to the semi-mainstream, it’s Analogue.

It started with the , an obsessive (and expensive) wood-grained reboot of the iconic Neo Geo. Then came the Analogue Nt in 2014, which brought easy, high-def NES gaming to our homes . In 2017, the Super Nt did the same for SNES gaming, then the Mega Sg for the Sega Genesis and, most recently, the , which supports everything from the Game Boy to the Neo Geo Pocket thanks to a series of adapters.

Analogue’s latest is something different. While all those before have lived and died by their cartridge ports, the new Analogue Duo takes us to the next generation of gaming: optical. That’s right, Analogue has entered the multimedia era with this love letter to one of Japan’s most beloved consoles, a machine that barely made a dent elsewhere in the world.

Analogue’s most expensive console in years and its first system with a CD-ROM drive is the ultimate ode to a forgotten gem. It’s not quite perfect, but it’s a great addition to any serious game collector’s arsenal.

That system is the TurboGrafx-16, known as the PC Engine in its home market of Japan. It launched there in 1987, beating the Sega Genesis to market by two years and the SNES by three. It rocketed to huge popularity, ultimately outselling Sega and keeping pace with Nintendo for much of its life. By the end of its run, its library offered nearly 700 games.

It didn’t fare so well in the US. The TurboGrafx-16 didn’t come here until 1989, arriving after the Genesis brought blast processing to the masses. Nintendo and Sega soon engaged in a marketing war of epic proportions. NEC’s humble TurboGrafx-16 didn’t stand a chance.

It didn’t help that it wasn’t really a 16-bit console. Though it offered support for 16-bit graphics, it only had an 8-bit internal processor, so it couldn’t match the power of the competition. The add-on CD-ROM didn’t help. Despite hitting the market years before the Sega CD, the Genesis add-on included an additional processor to deliver an early taste of 3D processing. The TurboGrafx drive was just that: an optical drive.

The system struggled in the US for a few more years before NEC pulled the plug in 1994. In Japan, new games hit the system all the way through 1999, meaning that even the most hardcore enthusiasts in the US missed out on the bulk of the PC Engine’s best titles.

And, since the Analogue Duo can play imported games just as readily as local ones, it’s a great excuse to dig deeper into that library.

Out of the box

The Analogue Duo is a slender console that shares an aesthetic similar to the PC Engine Duo, which was released in the US as the TurboDuo. NEC’s Duo integrated the CD-ROM peripheral into a single, sleek, unified device. But, the Analogue unit feels far nicer. Its plastic body feels sturdier than the brittle stuff used on consoles back in the ’90s, and the bottom is even rubberized. In fact, the Duo feels more like a high-end piece of home theater equipment, whereas the TurboGrafx-16 feels like a 30-year-old toy.

Up front are two slots. On the left is where cartridge-based games go, either on HuCard or TurboChip, the two media formats NEC used over the years. On the right is the CD-ROM slot.

Output to your display is via the HDMI port on the back, but there’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack with its own volume knob if you want some private listening. You’ll also find a port on the side for wired controllers, but since this uses the smaller Japanese connector, not the larger American one, you’ll need an adapter to use TurboGrafx-16 controllers.

Around the back is an SD card reader for firmware updates or the like, plus a USB-C port through which the system gets its power.

At the heart of the system is an Altera Cyclone V processor, a dual-core Arm Cortex field-programmable gate array (FPGA) chip that can be effectively coded to act like any other processor. It’s that core which enables the Duo to emulate the PC Engine and all its derivatives over the years.

There’s none of the lag and glitchy performance that you’ll get when running ROMs through an emulator. This is as close as you’re going to get to a modern reboot of the PC Engine, but with much cleaner output.

Analogue

Whether you’re playing domestic or imported games, everything will look stellar. As with previous Analogue releases, the Duo outputs a 1080p signal over HDMI, resulting in the absolute cleanest way to play your games on a modern digital display.

While there are ways to get an HDMI signal out of a TurboGrafx-16, ranging from RGB adapters that clip on the back to outputs soldered onto the system itself, even running through something like a scanline converter you’re unlikely to ever get a signal this crisp and clean.

But for those who like to preserve a taste of the old school, Analogue includes a few different gameplay modes to deliver a CRT-like look and feel.

To be fair, even the greatest of games for this system don’t offer much in terms of high-fidelity graphics compared to modern titles. But there are plenty well worth your time. Gate of Thunder is one of them, and it’s among the best side-view shooters, or shmups, ever to hit a console. The quality of games like this helped establish the PC Engine’s success in Japan.

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, though, is generally believed to be the single greatest title for the system. Released on CD-ROM in 1993, exclusively in the Japanese market, this is still ranked among the top Castlevania titles of them all.

It’s damned good, and plays excellently on the Analogue Duo. Load times for this game and others are quite fast, and the drive isn’t as noisy as many console CD-ROM add-ons were back in the day.

Gaming on the Analogue Duo

The Analogue Duo delivered flawless compatibility and playback for virtually every game I threw at it, with only one falling short: SCI: Special Criminal Investigation — which, thank goodness, has nothing to do with the CSI television series. SCI is the sequel to Chase H.Q., which was big in American arcades. Its unique mix of driving and shooting, as well as the inclusion of amazing period cars like the Nissan 300ZX Turbo made it a real favorite of mine. In fact, this was the first game I tried to play on the Duo.

So, imagine my horror when the Analogue system wouldn’t play it or even recognize it. It just displayed a blank screen, much like what happens on a region-locked US TurboGrafx-16 console when trying to play a Japanese game. So, I went into the Duo’s settings, explicitly changed the region to Japan, and the game played without issue.

This is the only game that the Duo failed to appropriately identify the region of, which is a minor annoyance at best that I’m sure will be fixed soon in one of Analogue’s frequent updates.

Firmware updates are easily applied via the integrated SD-card reader, which is also where your save games for CD-based titles are stored. This makes them easy to back up or even edit. With the appropriate USB adapter, it’s also possible to import your old save games.

Controllers

If there’s one fly in this ointment, it’s the controllers. As usual, Analogue partnered with 8BitDo to provide peripherals for the Duo. The $24.99 gamepad is the standard offering, and while it looks good in photos, in the hand it’s somewhat underwhelming.

For one thing, it feels just as light and flimsy as 8BitDo’s other products, with buttons that rattle when you shake the thing. The controller doesn’t even offer the same weight and solidity as the original TurboGrafx-16 controllers, which certainly aren’t standouts themselves.

But the 8BitDo controllers have a major advantage: they’re wireless. They pair quickly and easily with the Duo and work without lag. They also feature a dedicated home button to bring up the Analogue menu.

There is, though, one final kicker with the controllers: they charge over micro-USB. It’s 2024, 8BitDo. Even Apple has moved to USB-C.

Wrap-up

I really enjoyed testing the Analogue Duo. It was an opportunity to play releases I hadn’t dug out in years, and also to experience some games I hadn’t yet tried, all rendered in immaculate detail.

That said, it’s easy to see this as a very niche release for Analogue, a company whose obsessive fans are already far from mainstream. Software emulation is infinitely cheaper and still delivers great results, but those of us who love classic console gaming know that there’s just something different about running it from the original media.

Whether that extra something is worth the extra cost is between you and your accountant. Despite being Analogue’s most expensive release in years, and despite supporting a decidedly underappreciated console, the Analogue Duo is yet another excellent quality of life improvement for retro gamers and collectors. I can’t imagine playing my HuCards any other way.
