Apple Seeds Release Candidate Version of watchOS 10.5 to Developers

Apple today seeded the fifth beta of an upcoming watchOS 10.5 update to developers for testing purposes, with the beta coming a week after the release of the fourth beta.

To install the ‌watchOS 10.5 update, developers need to open the Apple Watch app, go to the Software Update section under “General” in Settings, and toggle on the watchOS 10 Developer Beta. An Apple ID linked to a developer account is required.

Once beta updates have been activated, watchOS 10.5 can be downloaded under the same Software Update section. To install software, an Apple Watch needs to have 50 percent battery life and it must be placed on an Apple Watch charger.

According to Apple’s release notes, the update includes support for the new Pride watch face.

watchOS 10.5 includes new features, improvements and bug fixes, including a new Pride Radiance watch face to honor the LGBTQ+ community and culture.

Samsung launches 2024 version of The Frame TV in India

Earlier this week, Samsung launched its 2024 lineup of smart TVs in India. During the launch event, the company revealed the pricing of its Neo QLED and OLED TVs. While it mentioned The Frame TV, it did not reveal its pricing or features. The 2024 version of The Frame TV can now be purchased in India, and its pricing has been revealed.

The 2022 version of The Frame TV is still available for purchase, and its price has been dropped.

The Frame TV (2024) brings improved colors and efficiency

The new version of The Frame TV (LS03D) has been launched in India. It comes in five sizes: 43-inch, 50-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch, and 75-inch. It uses a VA QLED panel with 4K resolution, 100% color volume, 1.07 billion colors, edge backlight, and a matte finish. It also features a 120Hz refresh rate (not available in 43-inch and 50-inch sizes), AMD FreeSync Premium, ALLM, VRR, and Super Ultra Wide Game View. It lacks Dolby Vision but features HDR10 and HDR10+ (Adaptive and Gaming).

Samsung says that the color accuracy of its new The Frame TV has improved. It now features ‘Pantone Art Validated Colors’ for more natural and realistic colors.

It has 2.0.2-channel speakers with 40W of total audio output. It also supports Dolby Atmos and Q-Symphony. It also features Active Voice Amplifier Pro, Adaptive Sound Pro, Object Tracking Sound, and 360 Audio.

It has four HDMI ports (one with HDMI 2.1), one optical port, one Ethernet port, one RF port, and two USB 2.0 ports. To make things more aesthetically pleasing, it has One Connect Box on the rear. Wireless connectivity features include AirPlay 2, Bluetooth 5.2, Tap Sound, Tap View, and Wi-Fi 5.

The TV runs Tizen OS 7.0 with a refreshed UI design and Samsung Daily+ interface. It uses the Quantum Processor 4K chip for AI-based 4K upscaling and general processing. It has Alexa, Bixby, Multi View, and SmartThings. It also brings Samsung Art Store – Streams, a complimentary set of regularly curated artworks and paintings fetched from the Samsung Art Store.

The Frame TV is now more power-efficient, thanks to an adjustable refresh rate. So, when you’re enjoying art on the screen, the TV lowers the refresh rate to conserve energy. It has motion and ambient light sensors, allowing you to determine the ambient conditions and adjust the picture accordingly. It has EyeComfort Mode, too.

Like the previous The Frame TVs, it features customizable magnetic bezels that you can adjust according to your preferences. It also comes with a Slim-Fit Wall Mount that allows you to mount the TV flush to a wall. It comes with a SolarCell Remote, which can charge through ambient light or the USB Type-C port.

The Frame TV (2024) pricing in India

The Frame TV (LS03D) has a starting price of INR 64,990 ($778) in India for the 43-inch version. The 55-inch version is priced at INR 97,990 ($1,173) and goes as high as INR 294,990 ($3,532) for the 75-inch version. Samsung is offering a cashback of INR 4,500 on the 43-inch version of the TV, INR 6,000 on the 50-inch, 55-inch, and 65-inch versions, and INR 15,000 on the 75-inch version.

New iPadOS version might finally usher in 2024 iPad Pro and Air

Apple reportedly released a tiny, tiny update to iOS and iPadOS on Wednesday. It’s possible this is the new version of the operating system supposedly needed for the much rumored — and much anticipated — 2024 iPad Pro and iPad Air models.

Don’t go looking for the updates on your iPhone or iPad, however.

iOS and iPadOS 14.4.1 again

iOS 14.4.1 and iPadOS 14.4.1 came out on March 21 with a handful of bug fixes. These have supposedly been replaced … sort of.

The original releases both had build number 21E236. But build 21E237 for each debuted on March 27. There’s no mention of them on Apple’s list of current OS versions for developers, though. And they aren’t available as over-the-air updates. However, they can be installed by connecting an iPhone or iPad to a Mac or PC.

Update could be what 2024 iPad Pro and Air are waiting for

Numerous leaks point to the imminent release of the 2024 iPad Pro and iPad Air. But a noted tipster said recently that the Pro models are waiting on an OS update.

“New software for the iPad Pro — a variant of iPadOS 17.4 designed for the updated models — won’t be complete until the end of March or even sometime in April,” Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said last week.

It’s quite possible that build 21E237 is the new iPadOS version that’s been holding up the launch of the tablet(s). If so, then the software can now be sent to Asia to be preinstalled on the 2024 iPad Pro, allowing the computers to be shipped around the world.

And the official announcement could be as early as Monday, April 1.

What to expect from two new Apple tablets

Many leaks indicate that the highlight of the 2024 iPad Pro will be an OLED (short for organic light-emitting diode) display in which each pixel glows on its own. This leads to a bright, even image with strong contrast. Leaks indicate these will go into both the 13-inch version and the 11-inch one.

OLED screen panels don’t need backlights so they’re thinner than traditional LEDs. This will allegedly allowed the designers of the upcoming Pro to make the upcoming tablet significantly slimmer.

Also supposedly coming soon is the first 12.9-inch iPad Air. The previous largest version includes a 10.9-inch display.

The current iPad Air 5 from 2022 runs an Apple M1 processor that debuted in 2020. The 2024 version will reportedly jump over M2 all the way to an M3.

Volkswagen has injected some performance chops into its electric ID Buzz with the announcement of a new GTX variant. It’s the most powerful Bulli of all time, offering up to 340hp (an increase of around 134hp over the standard model) thanks to a new 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

The shapely people mover, which is a futuristic take on the classic Bulli van of the 1950s, now accelerates from a standstill to 62mph in just 6.5 seconds and goes on to a limited top speed of 99mph – not exactly mind-blowing, but a 9mph increase on the standard model.

Surprisingly, VW will offer the GTX in both standard and long wheelbase options, which gives you the choice of carting five, six or seven humans around at those greater speeds.

The powertrain now consists of an 80kW motor that drives the front axle and a 210 kW motor at the rear, which not only delivers improved performance specs but also allows for a greater towing capacity. The Buzz GTX is capable of pulling 1,800kg behind it, while the long wheelbase model can only manage 1,600kg.

Apple recently started distributing internal builds of iOS 18 to factories and relevant vendors, according to credible information shared on X by a private account with a track record of sharing accurate details on Apple’s plans. The version of iOS that Apple provides at this stage is called “VendorUI,” and access to it is strictly controlled.

iOS 18 Mock Feature Baubles
Sent out on an annual basis, VendorUI is a variant of iOS that is provided to factories for quality control testing. Because it has a pre-production version of the iOS user interface that Apple won’t publicly unveil until WWDC, Apple is careful about where it is distributed. VendorUI can include references to new features, new settings or changes in branding. Unlike the versions of iOS used by Apple’s software engineers, VendorUI often has certain apps omitted, ensuring that only the apps necessary for testing are present.

With every iOS release, Apple develops several different versions of iOS:

  • Release – Stock iOS intended for end-consumers.
  • InternalUI – Created for Apple’s software engineers, often contains pre-production version of the iOS user interface, with unreleased and unannounced features.
  • VendorUI – Designed for quality control testing in factories and can contain elements of pre-production iOS user interface.
  • NonUI – Developed for hardware engineers and calibration machines, does not feature the standard iOS user interface.
  • LLDiags – Intended for use in low-level diagnostics and has no user interface at all except for a simple diagnostics menu (Diags).

The distribution of the VendorUI version of ‌iOS 18‌ means that we could soon start seeing more iOS features leak because the operating system is available to a larger number of people.

Even without VendorUI, information about iOS has started to come out. We’ve heard that ‌iOS 18‌ will have a heavy focus on AI, and there will be new Accessibility features, such as Adaptive Voice Shortcuts and Live Speech Categories. Apple reportedly ordered 8.5 million OLED screens for the iPad Pro models it’s expected to launch soon. More of these panels are for the 13-inch version of the tablet than they are for the 11-inch one.

Leaks indicate the next generation iPad Pro will reach store shelves later this month. Possibly even next week.

Top-of-the line 2024 OLED iPad Pro could be more popular

The last time Apple upgraded its premium tablets for professionals was fall 2022, so a replacement is due. And rather that simply boosting the performance with a faster processor — which Apple is supposedly doing — the 2024 iPad Pro will also get a better type of display.

It will be the first in the product line with an OLED screen rather than the tablet’s traditional LCD. With OLED (short for organic light-emitting diode) displays, each pixel glows on its own. This leads to a bright, even image with strong contrast.

On Friday, DigiTimes reported that Apple ordered 8.5 million OLED panels from South Korean companies. Of these, 4.5 million will be for the 13-inch version of the tablet while the remaining 4 million will be for the 11-inch version.

If true, it indicates that Cupertino expects the larger, more expensive version of the OLED iPad Pro to be the more popular of the two models.

Other enhancements

Previous leaks indicate that potential buyers should expect Apple’s next top-tier tablets to run the new M3 processor. This is the same chip that just went into the 2024 MacBook Air, the latest consumer-oriented macOS notebook.
