New Apple Pencil With Vision Pro Support in Testing Ahead of visionOS 2

While the Apple Pencil is currently compatible with iPads only, a future version of the accessory may work with Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

Apple Vision Pro and Apple Pencil Feature
Apple has internally tested a new Apple Pencil with visionOS support, according to a source familiar with the matter. This would allow the Apple Pencil to be used with drawing apps on the Vision Pro, such as Freeform and Pixelmator.

No specific details are known about this project, but one possibility is that users would be able to draw with the Apple Pencil on a desk or another flat surface, and the drawing would appear in the open visionOS app. This would essentially turn a person’s surroundings into a giant canvas, complete with pressure and tilt sensitivity.

A new Apple Pencil is rumored to launch alongside new iPad Pro and iPad Air models in April, but we have not confirmed if it will support visionOS.

Apple Pencil compatibility with the Vision Pro would also require updated software, but it is unclear which version might add support. The first beta of visionOS 1.2 will likely be made available to developers as early as this week, and Apple is expected to announce visionOS 2 at its annual developers conference WWDC in June.

As with any product that Apple develops, there is no guarantee that the company will move forward with releasing an Apple Pencil with visionOS support.

iOS 18 could bring blank space support on iPhone’s home screen

The first iPhone was launched in 2007, while the first Galaxy smartphone was unveiled in 2009. Ever since their launch, Android and iOS have copied features from each other, but Android has always been better at UI customization. While Apple has made several improvements in the past few years, it still lacks a basic feature that has been present on Galaxy (and other Android phones) for 14 years.

iOS 18 could bring blank space support to the iPhone’s home screen

MacRumors is reporting that iOS 18 will bring more home screen customization support to iPhones. While app icons on the home screen will still be locked to an invisible grid structure, iPhone users could have black spaces, columns, and rows between app icons. The information about a more customizable UI was first reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Dynamic Island OLED

It is already possible to create custom icons for apps on iOS, it requires a lot of effort and using the Shortcuts app. In comparison, Galaxy users can easily do so by installing a third-party app launcher and an icon pack. One UI lets users customize the colors of app icons using the Color Palette feature. One UI also lets users change the app icon grid size for the home screen, app drawer, and folders. They can also change the colors of the folders.

Using Samsung’s own Good Lock app suite, Galaxy users can customize the lock screen, home screen, multitasking screen, wallpapers and screensavers, and even the camera app. Since iOS is slowly adding more customizable features, it would be wise for Samsung to keep adding more (and good-looking) customization options to One UI.

Other features expected with iOS 18 include support for RCS (for better messaging between Android and iOS), Generative AI support for Siri, and AI features for many stock apps.

YouTube TV Gains Multiview Support on iPhone and iPad

YouTube TV subscribers can now watch several programs at once on iPhone and iPad, thanks to support for Multiview rolling out, Google has confirmed (via 9to5Google).

Multiview lets users watch four different cable channels on-screen at the same time. The feature works from the “Home” tab, which includes stream options like “Top Picks for You” and “Watch in Multiview,” but it only works for sports events.

Subscribers on ‌iPhone‌ and ‌iPad‌ will need to update to version 8.11 or later to access Multivew. According to YouTube TV, “device and content restrictions apply” for Multiview, and it is limited to “pre-selected games only.”

SmartThings app update brings new features but breaks themed icon support

Samsung has released an update to the SmartThings app for Android. It bumps the app’s version to 1.8.13.22 and brings three new features: A new app icon, a 3D map of your house showing all your smart home devices on it, and an indicator on your smart home products if there’s a firmware update available for them. Below is the official changelog for your reference.

New SmarThings app icon lacks themed icon support

The icon you got with the older version of the SmartThings app had a white background with a figure painted in a blue gradient representing two smart home devices connected directly to a hub and two smart home products connected indirectly to the hub. The icon you get with the latest version of the app has a blue background and a figure painted completely in white representing five smart home devices connected directly to a hub.

While the new app icon looks more sophisticated, there’s an issue with it, and that is, it isn’t adaptive or doesn’t support theming. That’s right. This version of the SmartThings app doesn’t have support for themed icon. The older version of the app did. As a result, it will not adapt to the system color or theme. Instead, it will retain the blue background no matter which color or theme you apply, standing out like a sore thumb.

I’m assuming that Samsung hasn’t made the icon adaptive as the company has just updated it, and I expect the brand to fix this issue with the next update to the app.

See your smart home devices on a 3D map of your house

Moving on to the 3D map view, the latest version of the SmartThings app allows you to create a 3D map of your house and place smart home devices in it, which gives you a better overview of your smart home products and makes it easier for you to control them.

The new feature can be accessed by clicking on the 3D-looking home icon at the top-right corner of the screen. The app gives you three options to create a 3D map: ‘Take a picture of your floor plan,’ ‘Freehand draw,’ and ‘Arrange rooms and walls.’

Easier to know if a software updates is available

Coming to the last feature, the latest version of the SmartThings app for Android shows an indicator on a smart home device if there’s a software update available for it. At least that’s what I’m assuming the new feature does going by the changelog. However, I wasn’t able to check out this feature as I don’t have any smart home devices at my home.

It is worth pointing out that the latest update for the SmartThings app for Android is available only through Google Play Store and not Galaxy Store, which is kind of weird because anyone would expect a new update for an app from Samsung to first become available on the company’s app marketplace rather than on a third-party app marketplace.

In January this year, X (formerly Twitter) added support for passkeys to the X app for iOS. Now, the company is working on bringing support for passkeys to the X app for Android.

According to AssembleDebug on TheSpAndroid, the latest beta version of the X app for Android (version 10.32.0) contains strings of codes mentioning passkeys. What’s even more interesting is that the author was able to activate the feature. Once they activated it, an option to enable passkeys appeared in the app with the description “Enable passkeys for added protection that may be tied to your biometrics.” The option is located in Settings and privacy » Security and account access » Security.

X:Twitter Support For Passkeys On Android

Unfortunately, the support for passkeys is not functional in the app at the moment, which suggests that the project is still under development. Once the feature is ready, the company might activate it by default in the beta version of the app, test it thoroughly, and then make it available in the stable version of the app. Once that happens, you will be able to log into the X app for Android by authenticating your identity using your phone’s or tablet’s fingerprint scanner or facial recognition system.
