Apple CEO Tim Cook is touring Shanghai, China this week, meeting with retail employees, suppliers, developers, the film industry, and others. He has been sharing photos from his trip on Chinese social media platform Weibo.

Apple provided more details about the store in a recent press release.

EU Antitrust Chief Warns Apple About App Store Fees and Safety Warnings

Key parts of Apple’s compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) are set to be investigated by European regulators based on developer feedback, the EU’s antitrust chief warned on Tuesday.

In an interview with Reuters, the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager said that Apple’s introduction of new fees was already being looked at as a potential attempt to dissuade developers from using alternative app stores.

“There are things that we take a keen interest in, for instance, if the new Apple fee structure will de facto not make it in any way attractive to use the benefits of the DMA. That kind of thing is what we will be investigating,” she told Reuters.

Apple enabled alternative app stores in the EU earlier this month, allowing third-party app stores to offer a catalog of other developers’ apps as well as the marketplace developer’s own apps. Apple also has a new fee structure as part of the change that has already come under fire from several developers and EU associations.

Vestager also warned Apple and other companies against discouraging users from switching to other app marketplaces by disparaging them, saying this kind of behaviour could trigger an investigation. Apple has already claimed some of the DMA-enforced changes could expose users to security risks that they are otherwise protected against when using the App Store.

“I would think of it as unwise to say that the services are not safe to use, because that has nothing to do with the DMA,” said Vestager. “The DMA is there to open the market for other service providers to get to you and how your service provider of your operating system, how they will make sure that it is safe is for them to decide.”

“And of course, if we see or get the suspicion that this is in order to say that someone else are not doing their job of course, we might take initiatives to look into that,” she added.

Vestager said feedback from developers was key to whether she would launch investigations into companies that must comply with the DMA. Asked whether she had received any comments from third parties, she said: “Quite a lot.”

Apple’s app ecosystem changes in the European Union went into effect with the launch of iOS 17.4 on March 6. Apple has since been tweaking the app ecosystem rules that it introduced based on developer feedback and discussions with regulators.

For example, third-party app stores are now able to offer apps directly from their own catalog, and developers will soon be able to distribute apps directly from their websites as long as they meet Apple’s requirements.

Apple says it is also working a solution that would prevent its 0.50 euro Core Technology Fee (CTF) from bankrupting developers if their free app goes viral.

Apple previewed its unusual new retail location in Shanghai Monday. Apple Jing’an, located near Jing’an Temple and Jing’an Park, opens Thursday. Encircled by a plaza, Apple Jing’an store in Shanghai will be a community gathering place and “a one-of-a-kind shopping destination,” the iPhone giant said.

Looking at the photos Apple provided, the store does, indeed, look anything but typical.

“We’re thrilled to open Apple Jing’an — a store that seamlessly blends the traditional with the modern and perfectly complements this historic neighborhood in Shanghai,” said Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail.

“From our phenomenal iPhone lineup to the new 13- and 15- inch MacBook Air, Apple Jing’an brings all of our products and services together with an amazing team to create a truly magical shopping experience for our customers.”

‘Must-see destination in Shanghai’

In part thanks to its location near the temple, Apple called the new store “a must-see destination in Shanghai.”

Here’s part of the description:

Approaching the store through a grove of maple trees that line the upper plaza, visitors are treated to a stunning view of the temple. As customers descend down the stairs, they pass by terracing, double-curved walls that extend forward in a circle to form amphitheater seating that will host Today at Apple sessions specially created for Apple Jing’an to celebrate the community and its creators.

Upon entering the expansive store from the lower level, customers are invited to explore the surrounding avenues and display tables with the latest iPhone 15 lineup, the new 13- and 15- inch MacBook Air with the powerful M3 chip, and Apple’s first-ever carbon neutral products in its latest Apple Watch lineup.

The store’s central staircase between floors is pretty dramatic, too. And of course the location features sustainable materials, per Cupertino’s commitment to the environment:

Once inside the store, visitors can travel between floors using the central feature staircase or through the stainless steel elevator. The Forum, featuring a large video wall in the center, serves as a space for learning and inspiration through free Today at Apple sessions. Meanwhile, the Boardroom offers a private setting where the store’s Business Team can offer advice and training to entrepreneurs, developers, and customers of businesses large and small.

Reflecting Apple’s long-standing commitment to the environment, the new store features a Padang Light stone wall that is sustainably and locally sourced within China.

Apple Jing’an store in Shanghai’s 150 team members will help customers shop for devices, get support and learn about using their gear, Apple said. The store, located near public transit, also features an Apple Pickup station for orders placed online, Apple noted.

Apple said it has served customers in China for more than 30 years, supporting more than 5 million jobs through direct employment, its supply chain and “the iOS app economy.” The first Apple Store opened in China in 2008 with Apple Sanlitun. Now it runs 57 stores in greater China.

Epic Games Accuses Apple of Charging ‘Unjustified Fees’ for Required Non-App Store Purchase Link

Epic Games is once again after Apple, this time accusing the Cupertino company of violating a court ruling that requires Apple to allow developers to offer in-app links to direct customers to third-party purchase options on the web.

Apple tweaked its U.S. App Store policies back in January, and developers are permitted to put one link in their apps that leads to a website where customers can make a purchase without using the in-app purchase system. Apple is still charging commission for these purchases, requiring developers to pay between 12 and 27 percent (three percent lower than the 15/30 standard fee).

‌Epic Games‌ is unhappy with the fee that Apple continues to charge, today telling the court that Apple has not complied with the order, and asking that Apple be held in contempt of court. ‌Epic Games‌ claims that the fees make the links “commercially unusable,” thereby subverting the injunction.

Apple violates the Injunction in three ways. First, with respect to External Links, Apple has imposed new fees and enacted a slew of new rules that work together to make the links commercially unusable. This new fee and accompanying web of restrictions subverts the purpose of the Injunction, allowing Apple to continue extracting its excessive commissions and making it effectively impossible for a developer to inform users about, and direct users toward, an alternative platform for making a purchase.

Second, Apple continues to categorically prohibit any steering using “buttons” or “other calls to action”. Specifically, Apple does not allow External Links that resemble a “button” in any way.

Third, Apple’s Guideline 3.1.3 still prohibits certain apps, including all multiplatform services (i.e., apps that operate across multiple platforms and allow users to access the same content across these platforms, including popular games such as Minecraft), from “within the app, encourag[ing] users to use a purchasing method other than in-app purchase”. This language expressly contravenes the Injunction by prohibiting any steering to alternative purchasing methods.

‌Epic Games‌ collected statements from other developers that have spoken out against Apple’s App Store fees, including Paddle CEO Christian Owens and Down Dog CEO Benjamin Simon.

Apple was initially ordered to make the ‌App Store‌ changes in 2021 as part of its court battle with ‌Epic Games‌. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez-Rogers, who oversaw the case, took issue with Apple’s anti-steering rules. Apple was able to delay implementing the ‌App Store‌ changes for a few years while it appealed, but none of the courts decided to change the verdict. Apple ultimately took it to the Supreme Court, but the court declined to hear the case, so Apple had to comply immediately at the beginning of the year.

‌Epic Games‌ claims that the fee Apple charges for the link is “financially unattractive” for developers who want to choose another payment solution, and it “prevents any meaningful competition between payment solutions.” The company wants the court to require Apple to bring its policies into compliance with the injunction.

“A brand-new Apple Store is coming soon,” the store’s page says. The teaser message was spotted by Michael Steeber, who writes a weekly newsletter about Apple retail called Tabletops, and tipster Apollo Zhao also alerted us to the news.

Apple’s existing store at Square One opened in August 2009. The new location is significantly larger, and will better accommodate the heavy customer traffic at Square One, the second-largest indoor shopping mall in Canada.

Apple has yet to share an exact opening date for the new store, and the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Just four years after Apple co-founder Steve Jobs relented and opened the iPhone’s App Store, the genius of allowing third-party developers to create iOS apps was undeniable. Hitting the 25 billion downloads landmark in such a short time showcased just how smart — and lucrative — the move was.

Developers dreamed up apps that made the iPhone more useful and fun. Apps that became hits made devs rich, and Apple took a cut of the sales. The App Store became a major profit center for Apple.

“We’d like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve this historic milestone of 25 billion apps downloaded,” says Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of internet software and services, in a statement. “When we launched the App Store less than four years ago, we never imagined that mobile apps would become the phenomenon they have, or that developers would create such an incredible selection of apps for iOS users.”

At the time, the App Store offered more than 550,000 apps for download. Apple had doled out more than $4 billion to developers for their 70% share of revenue from paid downloads.

The winner of the gift card in Apple’s 25 Billion App Countdown is Chunli Fu from China. The app is Disney’s Where’s My Water?, a free puzzle game released the previous September.

App Store continues to grow

By comparison, today the App Store peddles nearly 2 million apps, and clocks more than 100 billion downloads a year. The App Store’s reach and influence continue to grow, although Apple’s management of the store faces increasing scrutiny from international antitrust regulators.

“Apps and games have become the essential source for the world’s most innovative and timely entertainment,” Apple said in a 2022 press release. “The efforts, innovation, and creativity of the developers who leverage Apple technology to build these incredible experiences, coupled with the power of the App Store’s global platform to connect businesses of all sizes with over 600 million people each week across 175 countries, has led to developers selling digital goods and services earning more than $260 billion since the App Store launched in 2008.”

Apple continually touts the benefits of the App Store to both consumers and third-party developers. However, the company’s strict control over the app marketplace and the overall iOS ecosystem have landed Apple in hot water. Changes coming soon in iOS 17.4 will open the iPhone to sideloading and third-party app stores in the European Union. And Apple faces a $1.8 billion fine for its allegedly abusive treatment of streaming music rival Spotify.

Apple loved the milestones

Just a few years ago, Apple liked celebrating milestone events with promotions like the 25 Billion App Countdown. In fact, a 2004 contest to mark 100 million iTunes song downloads made the 2012 app download contest look meager.

The winner of the 2004 contest received a personal phone call from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, a 17-inch PowerBook, a 40GB iPod and a gift certificate for 10,000 iTunes songs.

These days, Apple mostly avoids making a big deal of these kinds of landmark events. When Apple passed the 1 billionth iPhone milestone, the company did little to commemorate the occasion. The same held true when Apple’s market cap surpassed the $1 trillion valuation. And $2 trillion. And $3 trillion.

Similarly, Apple avoids sharing too many details about the usage of services like Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade and Apple Fitness+. The company also stopped revealing the number of iPhones sold each quarter.

While I understand the logic behind this less-bombastic strategy, I miss the excitement of such old-school Apple events. It was fun when Apple eagerly (and publicly) counted down to its next gigantic sales record with events like the 25 Billion App Countdown.

Apple’s Eighth Retail Store in Shanghai Expected to Open This Month

Apple today announced the imminent opening of its eighth retail store in central Shanghai, China, which will be named Apple Jing’an.

Located on Nanjing West Road in the Jing’an District (named after its famous ancient Jing’an Temple), Apple Jing’an will become the 57th Apple store in mainland China. Local reports suggest it will be the second largest store in the city.

Embracing a floral theme, the storefront is currently draped in a veil of blooming flowers. To celebrate the opening, Apple has also made a special wallpaper for Apple devices available to download on its China website.

Apple has not yet revealed when the store will begin to welcome customers, but local reports suggest it will open its doors later this month.

Apple is currently grappling with a significant slump in demand for iPhone sales in the country, with a recent report by CounterPoint Research suggesting ‌iPhone‌ sales dropped by 24 percent in the first six weeks of 2024 alone.

Samsung expands its lineup of Premium Experience Stores in India with Bengaluru store

In 2018, Samsung opened the company’s first Premium Experience Store in Bengaluru, India, the Samsung Opera House, which is also the company’s flagship store in the country. Today, Samsung has opened the second Premium Experience Store in Bengaluru. This one is located in the Mall of Asia, which is situated in the Northern part of the city.

The new store is spread across 1,200 square feet of area. It has a “SmartThings station, Gaming zone, an audio-visual zone, and a smartphone and wearables section.” Samsung says that it will host a variety of events at the store, including the ‘Learn@Samsung’ program, which is designed for “tech-savvy consumers, especially Gen Z and millennials.” It will include “workshops around AI education focusing on consumer passion points.

Inaugural offers

Samsung says that people coming to the store will get assured gifts, 2x loyalty points on all transactions above INR 15,000, and Galaxy Buds FE at INR 2,999 with select Galaxy devices for a limited period. The first 200 customers will also get early bird giveaways on the purchase of Samsung products worth INR 20,000 or more. Along with these offers, people can available a 10% student discount on smartphones, laptops, and smartwatches, “up to 22.5% cashback, and INR 22,000 in additional benefits on select items.
