Apple’s large language model (LLM) that will power iOS 18’s AI features could entirely run locally. This would prioritize user privacy and offer faster response times.

However, running AI features on-device will have downsides as they might not be as powerful as on some Android phones.

iOS 18’s AI features might value privacy and experience

Android phones with generative AI features offload all the processing and heavy lifting to the cloud. This makes them powerful and ensures the phone’s AI processing capabilities do not limit them.

The catch is the privacy risk involved, as your data might be shared and uploaded to the cloud. Plus, the high response times lead to a poor user experience.

Apple aims to bypass these problems with on-device processing. So, the phone will process the AI commands locally instead of offloading them to the cloud. This is a more privacy-friendly approach, though Apple might have to limit its AI features based on the chip’s AI processing capabilities.

Additionally, in the latest edition of the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman claims Apple will adopt a different marketing strategy for iOS 18’s AI features. Instead of highlighting the generative AI tools, the company will show how the AI features will benefit users in daily use.

Apple’s marketing prowess could help its generative AI features stand out even if it’s less powerful.

Can You Really Run on Top of a Train, Like in the Movies?

Just because you see something done in a movie, that doesn’t mean you should try it yourself. Take, for example, a human running on top of a moving train. For starters, you can’t be sure it’s real. In early Westerns, they used moving backdrops to make fake trains look like they were in motion. Now there’s CGI. Or they might speed the film up to make a real train look faster than it really is.

So here’s a question for you: Is it possible to run on a train roof and leap from one car to the next? Or will the train zoom ahead of you while you’re in the air, so that you land behind where you took off? Or worse, would you end up falling between the cars because the gap is moving forward, lengthening the distance you have to traverse? This, my friend, is why stunt actors study physics.

Framing the Action

What is physics anyway? Basically it’s a set of models of the real world, which we can use to calculate forces and predict how the position and velocity of things will change. However, we can’t find the position or velocity of anything without a reference frame.

Suppose I’m standing in a room, holding a ball, and I want to describe its location. I can use Cartesian coordinates for a 3D space to give the ball an (x, y, z) value. But these numbers depend on the origin and orientation of my axes. It seems natural to use a corner of the room as the origin, with x and y axes running along the base of two adjacent walls and the z axis running vertically upward. Using this system (with units in meters), I find that the ball is at the point (1, 1, 1).

What if my pal Bob is there, and he measures the ball’s location in a different way? Maybe he puts the origin where the ball starts, in my hand, giving it an initial position of (0, 0, 0). That seems logical too. We could argue about who’s right, but that would be silly. We just have different frames of reference, and they’re both arbitrary. (Don’t worry, we’ll get back to trains.)

Now I toss that ball straight up in the air. After a short time interval of 0.1 second, my coordinate system has the ball at the location (1, 1, 2), meaning it’s 1 meter higher. Bob also has a new location, (0, 0, 1). But notice that in both systems, the ball rose by 1 meter in the z direction. So we would agree that the ball has an upward velocity of 10 meters per second.

A Moving Reference Frame

Now suppose I take that ball on a train traveling at 10 meters per second (22.4 miles per hour). I again toss the ball straight up—what will happen? I’m inside the railcar, so I use a coordinate system that moves along with the train. In this moving reference frame, I am stationary. Bob is standing on the side of the tracks (he can see the ball through the windows), so he uses a stationary coordinate system, in which I am moving.

April 5: Today in Apple history: Mac users can run Windows with Boot Camp April 5, 2006: Apple introduces the public beta of Boot Camp, software that allows users with an Intel-based Mac to run Windows XP on their machines.

Boot Camp will officially arrive in Mac OS X Leopard, which debuts at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference a few months later.

Apple’s Boot Camp lets Windows run on Macs

As noted in yesterday’s “Today in Apple history,” the legal battles between Microsoft and Apple over similarities between the Windows and Mac operating systems ran throughout the late 1980s and 1990s.

Ultimately, Microsoft did not wipe out Apple as many expected early on. However, it became pretty clear to everyone that Microsoft emerged as the victor in terms of mainstream operating systems. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs said so himself in Fortune magazine in 1996, around the time he returned to Cupertino.

“The PC wars are over,” Jobs said. “Done. Microsoft won a long time ago.”

By 2006, however, things were changing, and Boot Camp illustrated Apple’s — and the Mac’s — growing popularity. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates had stopped running the company half a decade earlier. Microsoft got stuck in a relative slump after hitting its peak valuation at the height of the dot-com bubble.

Apple, on the other hand, found a way to rebound. Just a few years after releasing the iPod in 2001, the MP3 player made up the bulk of Apple’s revenue, moving the Mac to second place. The “halo effect” of the iPod, however, helped bring Macs to a whole new audience. (A series of innovative Mac hardware designs didn’t hurt, either.)

Macs switch from PowerPC to Intel

Apple viewed Boot Camp as a way to appeal to people who might make the jump from PC to Mac. Apple’s switch from PowerPC processors to Intel CPUs, which Jobs announced in 2005, made the feature possible.

“Apple has no desire or plan to sell or support Windows, but many customers have expressed their interest to run Windows on Apple’s superior hardware now that we use Intel processors,” Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said at the time. “We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to Windows users considering making the switch.”

Boot Camp simplified Windows installation on an Intel-based Mac by providing a simple, step-by-step graphical assistant application. It made it easy to create a second partition on the hard drive for Windows, burn a CD with all necessary Windows drivers, and install Microsoft’s operating system from a Windows XP installation CD.

After installing the software, users could choose to run either Mac OS X or Windows when they restarted their computers.

Boot Camp did not mark the end of hostilities between Apple and Microsoft, though. Anyone who thought this was Apple acknowledging that Windows also had something valuable to offer would soon be disabused of that notion — when Apple debuted its “Get a Mac” ads talking trash about Windows PCs.

Apple silicon signals twilight for Boot Camp

In 2020, Apple began switching the Mac lineup from Intel processors to its own custom chips. One side effect is that Boot Camp does not run on Apple silicon. Users with Macs powered by Apple’s M1, M2 and M3 chips must rely on virtualization software like Parallels or VMWare Fusion if they want to run Windows.

Yesterday, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55, but they aren’t the first mid-rangers to run One UI 6.1 out of the box.

As you can see in the image below, the Galaxy F15 5G appears to be the first affordable Galaxy phone to run Android 14-based One UI 6.1 out of the box. The device was released in India a few days ago and is already available for purchase. It will get four major Android OS updates, similar to the Galaxy A35, Galaxy A55, Galaxy S23, and the Galaxy Z Flip 5/Fold 5.

It isn’t clear if all the non-AI features debuted with One UI 6.1 on the Galaxy S24 series are available on the Galaxy F15 5G. However, it comes with the new Quick Share, search engine selection for Chrome (and default search engine), Secure Folder, Samsung Knox, Samsung Wallet, Smart Hotspot, and Voice Focus.

The phone is priced at INR 12,999 ($157) in India and comes with 4GB/6GB RAM and 64GB/128GB storage options.
