[ad_1]

Apple Pencil Pro reportedly in the works – but keep the eraser ready on this rumor

[ad_1]

There’s a good chance Apple will unveil a new stylus during its Let Loose event, but recently discovered clues suggest we might see an Apple Pencil Pro. User rsuOvO on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) reportedly found multiple references to the Pro model in the code of the company’s Japanese website.

At the time of this writing, you can still find the name by heading over to the web page, and then pressing the Ctrl and U keys at the same time. Scroll to about 60 percent of the way down and you’ll find the name “Apple Pencil Pro” littered throughout.

The surrounding text is in Japanese. Since we can’t read the language, we ran the wording through Google Translate to get an idea of what it’s saying so take the following with a grain of salt. According to the machine translation, it just describes the accompanying GIF animation in detail. The text talks about how the event logo is drawn with shades of green and white before ending with a glossier version of the Apple icon. No other information about the Pencil Pro, what it might look like, or any of its features could be found.

Apple Pencil Pro name found in code

What’s interesting about the code is it cannot be found on the American, European, or UK versions of Apple’s website. We did find strings of text mentioning the Apple Pencil and a description of the same GIF animation, but nothing on a Pro model of any kind. As far as we know, the name doesn’t appear anywhere else.

Analysis: A possible rebranding

Top Stories: Apple Event Preview, iPad Pro With M4 Chip Rumor, New Beats Headphones, and More

[ad_1]

It’s been a long time since the last one, but an Apple event is finally right around the corner! While it’s anticipated to be a fairly short pre-recorded affair, we’re expecting to see the first updates to the iPad lineup in over a year and half, so make sure to tune in to see what Apple has in store.

top stories 4may2024
Other news and rumors this week included a couple of product introductions from Apple’s Beats brand, a roundup of rumors about updates to Apple’s stock apps coming in iOS 18, and more changes to Apple’s policies in the EU related to the Digital Markets Act, so read on below for all the details!

What to Expect From the May 7 Apple Event

Apple’s first event of 2024 kicks off on Tuesday, May 7, at 7 a.m. Pacific Time, and we’ve put together our usual pre-event guide outlining what we’re expecting to see on Tuesday. Several new products are expected to be unveiled, including two new iPad Pro models, two new iPad Air models, an updated Apple Pencil, and a redesigned Magic Keyboard for iPads.

Let Loose Event What to Expect FeatureLet Loose Event What to Expect Feature
One rumor was particularly surprising this week, as Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said there is a “strong possibility” that the new iPad Pro models will be equipped with Apple’s next-generation M4 chip, rather than the M3 chip that debuted in the MacBook Pro and iMac six months ago. Gurman believes the M4 chip will have an upgraded Neural Engine that is able to process artificial intelligence (AI) tasks faster.

In addition, the new Apple Pencil is rumored to feature haptic feedback.

Will the New iPad Pro Really Have the M4 Chip?

Will the next iPad Pro models be equipped with the M4 chip instead of the M3 chip, or will this rumor end up being as wrong as the flat-edged Apple Watch Series 7 from a few years ago?

While it would be unprecedented for an M-series chip to debut in an iPad before a Mac, there is some evidence to suggest that the rumor might be true, so check out our story for more details about this possibility.

Beats Solo Buds Launching in June for Just $79.99

Apple unveiled two new Beats headphone models this week, including the on-ear Beats Solo 4 and the compact Beats Solo Buds.

Launching in June, the Beats Solo Buds are particularly interesting given their competitive $79.99 price point. Key features include ear tips with four size options, up to 18 hours of battery life, a USB-C carrying case, and Find My support on iOS and Android. However, the Solo Buds lack active noise cancellation, and the carrying case does not have a built-in battery.

In other Beats news, LeBron James and Daniel Ricciardo have been seen in public carrying an unreleased speaker very clearly descended from the discontinued Beats Pill family, so it looks like the popular portable speaker may be making a comeback in the not too distant future.

Both iPhone 16 Pro Models to Feature 256GB Base Storage, Claims Sketchy Rumor

[ad_1]

Apple will allegedly offer both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max with a minimum 256GB of storage, doing away with the 128GB starting option on its smaller Pro model for the first time.

iPhone 16 Pro Front Feature
Currently, Apple’s 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999 and comes with the minimum 128GB of storage, while the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at $1,199 with a minimum 256GB of storage.

However, according to a post on X (Twitter) by LeaksApplePro, Apple will bump up the base storage of the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro to 256GB to match the minimum capacity of the larger iPhone 16 Pro Max, while the starting price of Apple’s smaller Pro model will remain at $999.

The X account has no recent track record for accurate Apple leaks or rumors, so we are filing this one under sketchy. Having said that, the claim is not outside the realm of possibility.

If Apple drops 128GB as the base on the iPhone 16 Pro, that will leave three Pro storage options across the board: 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.

It’s also worth noting that in 2018, Apple’s premium iPhone X came with 64GB, an entry-level storage tier that persisted in successive generations until the iPhone 13 in 2021, when Apple adopted 128GB as the new baseline. If Apple makes 256GB the new minimum across its premium devices, it could be settling into a pattern of doubling the minimum capacity every three years.

At the other end of the scale, a rumor in January out of Korea claimed that both iPhone 16 Pro models will be available with double the maximum storage capacity as the iPhone 15 Pro devices, increasing from 1TB to 2TB.

The maximum storage increase is said to be a result of Apple’s switch to higher-density Quad-Level Cell (QLC) NAND flash for higher storage models. Apple’s use of QLC NAND could allow Apple to fit more storage into a smaller space and it is less expensive than Triple-Level Cell (TLC) NAND, which current iPhones use.

This year’s iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumored to be getting bigger display sizes, increasing to 6.27- and 6.86-inches, respectively. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively. The new display sizes will be the largest ever for the iPhone, and should also increase the physical space for internal components and parts.

Today in Apple history: Early iPad rumor gets Apple fans buzzing

[ad_1]

April 13: Today in Apple history: Early iPad rumor gets Apple fans buzzing April 13, 2005: The tech world gets excited when a sketchy rumor suggests Apple is building a tablet computer.

The Chinese-language report claims Quanta will build a 15-inch touchscreen tablet PC with detachable keyboard. Apple will supposedly ship the device in the first quarter of 2006. Things don’t turn out quite like that, but the rumor offers the first hint about Apple’s secret iPad project.

The first iPad rumor?

The idea of developing a tablet fascinated Apple co-founder Steve Jobs for a long time, although he denied it when asked by journalist Walt Mossberg in May 2003.

“We have no plans to make a tablet,” Jobs said at the time.

However, a tablet appealed to Jobs’ love of minimalism, since it was basically a screen with nothing else.

The iPad: Inspired by Alan Kay’s Dynabook

Alan Kay's Dynabook concept was for a personal computer simple enough for children to use.
Alan Kay’s Dynabook concept was for a personal computer simple enough for children to use.

In particular, Jobs was inspired by the Dynabook, a concept dreamed up in 1968 by Xerox PARC (and later Apple) engineer Alan Kay.

During Jobs’ absence from Apple, the company experimented with tablet-like mobile devices in the form of the Newton MessagePad (which Jobs ultimately canceled upon his return to Cupertino).

However, by the early 2000s, Apple began working on the iPad, or at least thinking a lot more about the tablet computer form factor.

In March 2004, the company surveyed select customers, claiming it was considering relaunching the Newton. In actuality, Apple was gathering data about demand for future mobile devices.

Apple patent shows iPad-like ‘electronic device’

An Apple patent from 2004 shows designs for an iPad-like device.

That exact same month, the company filed a design patent application for an “electronic device” that looks virtually identical to the iPad that shipped a few years later (with the exception of the smaller display, which looked more like the iPad mini). The patent application listed both Jobs and Apple design chief Jony Ive as inventors.

Apple ultimately opted to develop a touch interface smartphone, the iPhone, before revisiting the iPad concept. It’s not clear whether there was any truth to the Quanta rumor about a possible tablet computer. Perhaps Apple was sourcing components it was unable to put together in its Industrial Design lab back in Cupertino.

Still, this rumor got a lot of people buzzing about a possible Apple tablet back in 2005. Another five years passed before Apple introduced the iPad. However, this rumor revealed definite excitement about what Apple might do with a tablet.

What was the first report you heard about the iPad? Leave your comments below.

iOS 18 Rumor: Apple and Baidu ‘Yet to Reach’ Generative AI Partnership

[ad_1]

Apple has yet to reach a generative AI partnership with Chinese company Baidu, according to a China Daily report citing sources familiar with the matter. Some earlier reports said the two companies had finalized an agreement following discussions. It is possible that the negotiations are still ongoing, but this is not confirmed.

iOS 18 Mock Siri Feature Baubles
If the partnership does happen, Baidu would likely power some of iOS 18’s rumored generative AI features in China only. Generative AI models must receive approval from the Chinese government, and Baidu’s Ernie chatbot is permitted in the country. Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbots are not available in China.

Apple has reportedly held similar generative AI partnership discussions with Google and OpenAI for the U.S. market, and likely other countries.

Apple has repeatedly teased that it has generative AI announcements to share later this year, and this likely refers to iOS 18. The software update is rumored to include new generative AI features for a range of iPhone features and apps, including Siri, Spotlight, Apple Music, Health, Messages, Numbers, Pages, Keynote, Shortcuts, and more.

iOS 18 will be previewed at Apple’s developers conference WWDC in June, so we’re just a few months away from learning about the company’s plans.

iOS 18 Rumor Recap: Smarter Siri, Design Changes, and More

[ad_1]

iOS 18 is still months away from being unveiled, but there are already several rumors and expectations for the software update, as outlined below.

iOS 18 Mock Feature Baubles
iOS 18 is rumored to include new ChatGPT-inspired generative AI features for Siri and many built-in apps, and Apple plans to add RCS support to the Messages app for an improved texting experience between iPhones and Android devices. The update is also rumored to have some design changes, but details remain slim.

iOS 18 is expected to be announced at Apple’s annual developers conference WWDC in June, and widely released in September.

Smarter Siri and Generative AI

iOS 18 Mock Siri Feature Baubles
iOS 18 is rumored to have new generative AI features for Siri, Spotlight, Shortcuts, Apple Music, Messages, Health, Numbers, Pages, Keynote, and more, according to sources such as Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman and The Information‘s Wayne Ma.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has repeatedly teased that the company is working on generative AI, and plans to share details “later this year.”

Generative AI surged in popularity in late 2022, when OpenAI released ChatGPT, a chatbot that can respond to questions and other text prompts. The company has also expanded into generative AI tools for images and videos.

Some generative AI features might be exclusive to iPhone 16 models, which are rumored to have a Neural Engine with “significantly” more cores.

RCS Support in Messages App

General Apps Messages
In November, Apple announced that it would support the cross-platform messaging standard RCS in the Messages app on the iPhone starting “later” in 2024, so it will likely be an iOS 18 feature based on that timeframe.

RCS support should result in the following improvements to the default messaging experience between iPhones and Android devices:

  • Higher-resolution photos and videos
  • Audio messages
  • Typing indicators
  • Read receipts
  • Wi-Fi messaging between iPhones and Android devices
  • Improved group chats, including the ability for iPhone users to leave a conversation that includes Android users

These modern features are already available for iPhone-to-iPhone conversations with blue bubbles, via iMessage, and many of the features are also available in third-party messaging apps, such as WhatsApp and Telegram. RCS support on the iPhone will extend the features to green bubbles in the Messages app.

Design Changes

iOS Design 1
In a February edition of his newsletter, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said Apple was working to update the design of iOS as “early as this year.”

Gurman has yet to reveal any specific design changes planned for iOS. In a November edition of his newsletter, however, he said Apple’s senior management described iOS 18 as “ambitious and compelling,” with “major new features and designs.”

Gurman does not expect iOS 18 to receive a “total overhaul that mirrors visionOS.”

Accessibility Features

iOS 18 could include new accessibility features related to VoiceOver, Live Speech, and Text Size.
