iPad Pro’s M4 Chip Outperforms M3 by Up to 25%

[ad_1]

Benchmarks for the new M4 iPad Pro models have popped up on Geekbench, giving us an idea of how much faster Apple’s second-generation 3-nanometer chips are compared to the M3, M2, and other prior-generation Apple silicon chips.

iPad Pro M4 Silver and Space Black Feature Purple
The 10-core variant of the M4 chip earned an average single-core score of 3,695 and an average multi-core score of 14,550 across 10 benchmarks. When it comes to single-core performance, the M4 is faster than the M3 Max MacBook Pro, and it’s comparable to the ‌M2‌ Max in multi-core performance.

For context, here are the single-core and multi-core scores of prior chips (all max CPU/GPU variants):

  • M4 – 3,695/14,550
  • A17 Pro – 2,908/7,234
  • M2 – 2,540/9,360
  • M2 Pro – 2,651/14,295
  • M2 Max – 2,802/14,800
  • M1 – 2,272/8,208
  • M3 – 3,087/11,702
  • M3 Pro – 3,112/15,286
  • M3 Max – 3,128/20,957

Compared to the ‌M2‌ in the prior version of the ‌iPad Pro‌, the M4 is 46 percent faster when it comes to single-core performance, and 55 percent faster in multi-core performance. Apple didn’t use the M3 in an iPad, but it is up to 24 percent faster than the M3.

Apple said that the M4 delivers up to 1.5x faster CPU performance than the ‌M2‌ in the prior-generation ‌iPad Pro‌, which is accurate based on the benchmarks we’ve seen so far.

Apple plans to bring the M4 chip family to all of its products across 2024 and 2025, with the first M4 Macs slated for later this year.

Apple’s thinner new iPad Pros feature an M4 chip and “tandem” OLED displays

[ad_1]

Apple’s new iPad Pro models are its most laptop-like tablets yet. They’re the first devices powered by the company’s M4 chip, which will deliver faster performance and more AI capabilities. And, for the first time outside of the iPhone and Apple Watch, both the new 11-inch and (slightly larger) 13-inch iPad Pros will sport OLED screens. That’s a step up from the LCD and Mini-LED displays on the previous models, and it should lead to bolder colors, inky dark black levels and far better contrast.

iPad Pro 2024iPad Pro 2024

Appole

These aren’t your typical OLEDs, either: Apple says the new iPad Pros feature “tandem” OLED displays (branded as Ultra Display XDR) for 1,000 nits of SDR and HDR brightness, as well as 1,500 nits of peak brightness. That solves the brightness issues facing earlier OLED screens, and it means you likely won’t miss the extreme brightness of Mini-LED. For an additional $100, you can also equip the 1TB and 2TB iPad Pro models with nano-texture glass, which helps to reduce screen glare.

Thanks to the OLED displays, Apple was also able to make the new iPad Pros far thinner and lighter than before. The 11-inch model is 5.3mm thick and “weighs less than a pound,” according to the company, while the 13-inch is 5.1mm thick and is “nearly a quarter pound lighter than its predecessor.” Notably, Apple says the bigger iPad Pro is the thinnest device it’s ever made.

iPad Pro 2024iPad Pro 2024

Appole

It’s interesting to see Apple skip the M3 chip entirely and debut the M4 on the iPad Pro — that’s a sign of just how important the company considers these new tablets. The M4 chip sports up to a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. (Oddly enough, you’ll have to buy the iPad Pro with 1TB or 2TB of storage to get the fully-powered M4, the lower tier models are stuck with a 9-core CPU.) Apple claims the M4’s CPU is up to 50 percent faster than the M2, and its GPU is four times as fast. It also features a Neural Engine that can reach 38 TOPS (tera operations per second) of AI performance. That’s faster than any processor shipping today, and it’s slightly below the upcoming Snapdragon X Elite chips, which feature a 45 TOPS NPU.

As for other new hardware, the iPad Pros feature a 12-megapixel rear camera that can capture Smart HDR images. It can also identify documents and scan them more easily thanks to a True Tone flash. Apple claims it can use AI to take multiple images and merge them into a clearer scanned image. Just like the recent 10th-gen iPad, Apple also moved the iPad Pro’s webcam to the top of the tablet’s landscape orientation, which will be helpful for wider video chats. (When it was at the top of the iPad’s portrait view, it always felt like you were looking off to the side when you rotated it to landscape view.)

Apple Magic KeyboardApple Magic Keyboard

Apple

In addition to vastly better performance and premium OLED displays, Apple’s new Magic Keyboard ($299 for the 11-inch and $349 for the 13-inch) goes a long way towards making the iPad Pro seem like a laptop. It features a metal wrist rest, function keys and a much larger trackpad. The company claims it will make using the iPad Pro feel more like a MacBook (let’s just hope we see some iOS 18 multitasking updates to truly cement that). For the artists out there, Apple also unveiled a new $129 Pencil Pro with squeeze and rolling capabilities, as well as haptic feedback.

The new iPad Pro starts at $999 for the 11-inch model ($1,199 with 5G) and $1,299 for the 13-inch ($1,499 with 5G). Those prices are both $200 more than the previous models, yet another sign of Apple positioning these things more like notebooks.

New iPad Pros Support Lower Refresh Rate, But Lack Always-On Display

[ad_1]

The new 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models are equipped with OLED displays that support a refresh rate as low as 10Hz, but the devices still lack an always-on display option like the iPhone and Apple Watch have, according to Apple’s tech specs.

f 7ba5b5b668dd68b7179a599305cff6b117ef35d1
While the iPad Pro has supported ProMotion since 2017, the device only supported refresh rates between 24Hz and 120Hz until now. The new iPad Pro models use low-power LTPO technology, according to display industry expert Ross Young, allowing the display to ramp down to 10Hz for static content. This change will contribute to lower power consumption, but advertised battery life is unchanged overall compared to the previous iPad Pro generation.

The same situation happened a few years ago with the iPhone 13 Pro models, which also support ProMotion down to 10Hz, but lack an always-on display option. The feature finally arrived on the iPhone with the iPhone 14 Pro models, which can ramp down to 1Hz, and Apple Watch models with an always-on display also reach 1Hz.

All in all, the iPad Pro is unlikely to get an always-on display option until if and when it too supports a 1Hz refresh rate.

Apple says the iPad Pro now features “state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology that uses two OLED panels and combines the light from both to provide phenomenal full-screen brightness.” The new iPad Pro models can achieve up to 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR content, compared to 600 nits for the previous-generation models.

The new iPad Pro models are available to order starting today and launch on Wednesday, May 15.

Top-tier 2024 iPad Pros get faster chip, more RAM, hefty price tags

[ad_1]

2024 OLED iPad Pro games
Gaming is better with more RAM and a faster processor.
Screenshot: Apple

Apple Let Loose Event:Those who want the most powerful 2024 iPad Pro available need to choose one with at least 1TB of storage. Going with lots of capacity brings a faster version of the new M4 processor and twice as much RAM.

The high-storage versions also have the option of a nano-texture display glass.

Getting all these adds considerably to the price tag, though.

Upgrade 2024 iPad Pro storage for more RAM, other improvements

It’s not unusual for Apple to add bonus features for those who configure their iPad Pro with more storage. Additional capacity adds more RAM has been the deal for a while. But not all shoppers are aware of it.

With the 2024 iPad Pro — whether the 13-inch or 11-inch versions — choosing 1TB or 2TB of built-in storage bumps the RAM from 8GB to 16GB.

It also upgrades the M4 processor from three performance cores to four performance cores. Otherwise the chips are identical, with six efficiency cores, a ten-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine.

Plus, only those two top configurations have the option of nano-texture display glass. Apple says this is “precisely etched at a nanometer scale, maintaining image quality and contrast while scattering ambient light for reduced glare.”

But expect to pay for it

The base model 11-inch iPad Pro is $999 (U.S.) and the base 13-inch iPad Pro model is $1,299 (U.S.). These have 256GB of storage — configuring them with a lot more boosts the price significantly. Going with 1TB jumps the cost to $1,599 or $1,899, respectively. The 2TB upgrade brings the cost to $1,999 or $2,299, respectively.

Adding nano-texture display glass increases the cost by $100.

The tablet is available for pre-order now. It will reach customers next week, on May 15.

Apple’s new iPad Pro could launch in early May with updated internals and a refreshed design. All rumors surrounding Apple’s next premium tablet indicate it will feature OLED displays.

The first iPadOS 17.5 beta seems to confirm this, as it contains four new display firmware for unreleased iPad models.

iPadOS 17.5 beta contains new display firmware for unreleased iPads

9to5Mac did some code digging in the recently released iPadOS 17.5 beta and found multiple references to unreleased iPads. Additionally, they found four new display firmware for iPad16,3, iPad16,4, iPad16,5, and iPad16,6. Apparently, these four models are the upcoming iPad Pro, separated by cellular and Wi-Fi options.

Based on the references, the report says Apple’s 2024 iPad Pro lineup will use OLED displays, with different suppliers for the 11-inch and 12.9-inch models.

Apple seemingly had to delay the launch of its new iPad Pro lineup due to the complex OLED panels. The tablets are now apparently scheduled for launch in the second week of May. Apple will soon start shipping marketing materials to its retail stores to prepare for the new iPad’s launch.

The 2024 iPad Pro’s OLED panels should provide higher brightness levels with better colors, contrast, and clarity.

12.9-inch iPad Air might also launch soon

Apple should also unveil a new 12.9-inch iPad Air alongside the OLED iPad Pro. Rumors suggest the OLED iPad Pros will cost significantly more than their predecessors, so a 12.9-inch Air should fill the gap caused by the price hike.

iPadOS 17.5 beta also contains references to an unreleased Apple Pencil. It will seemingly support a new “squeeze” gesture. Previous leaks indicate the next-gen Apple Pencil will have Find My integration, with a patent filing popping up about this way back in May 2023.

In addition to the new iPad Pro, Apple is working on a refresh for the iPad mini and low-cost iPad. The two models could launch towards the end of the year and sport minor internal spec bumps.
