iOS 17.5 Includes ‘Repair State’ Option That Doesn’t Require Turning Off Find My for Service

[ad_1]

With iOS 17.5, Apple is adding a “Repair State” feature that is designed to allow an iPhone to be sent in for service without deactivating Find My and Activation Lock. The fourth iOS 17.5 beta that came out today adds a “Remove This Device” option for all devices in ‌Find My‌, and using it with an ‌iPhone‌ puts that ‌iPhone‌ into the new Repair State.

ios 17 5 repair state
Right now, sending an ‌iPhone‌ to Apple to be repaired requires turning off Find My, and Apple says that it “might not” be able to repair devices that have ‌Find My‌ activated. Turning off ‌Find My‌ disables Activation Lock, an important anti-theft security feature that prevents an ‌iPhone‌ from being used with another Apple ID.

Apple currently uses ‌Find My‌ and Activation Lock as a way to ensure that a person sending a device in for repair actually owns that device, and that it’s not stolen. An ‌iPhone‌ sent in for repair with ‌Find My‌ disabled cannot be tracked, and it is not protected from theft, so if it is lost or stolen at some point in transit during the repair process, there is no recovery method available. Removing ‌Find My‌ also has a hitch with Stolen Device Protection, as there is an hour wait when turning off ‌Find My‌, which can be inconvenient for repair purposes.

The new repair state leaves ‌Find My‌ turned on, so Activation Lock remains enabled, and the ‌iPhone‌ continues to be trackable with the ‌Find My‌ app while it is being repaired. When enabled, the device in the repair state has a “Ready for Repair” label. “This device remains fully functional in the repair state,” reads the text.

ios 17 5 repair state iconios 17 5 repair state icon
In the list of devices, an ‌iPhone‌ put into a repair state has a small stethoscope icon, and it can be marked as lost. While in repair state, the ‌iPhone‌ is fully functional.

As of right now, using the “Remove This Device” option in ‌Find My‌ to enable a repair state appears to be limited to the ‌iPhone‌. Using it on other devices like an ‌iPhone‌, Mac, or Apple Watch shows a warning that the feature will remove the device from the ‌Apple ID‌ account, allowing it to be used by someone else. Note that an ‌iPhone‌ must be online and trackable through ‌Find My‌ for the repair state option to pop up. An ‌iPhone‌ that is offline will display the standard removal text. It is also worth noting that repair state cannot be disabled at the current time.

Repair state is a feature that is still in development, so it might work with other devices when iOS 17.5 and its sister updates launch in May.

Threads Tests Option to Archive Posts as Platform Hits 150M+ Users

[ad_1]

Threads is testing an option that allows users to archive old posts so that they don’t appear on their profile, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

instagram threads app
In a post on the Meta-owned social media platform, Mosseri said that the archive option being tested with a small number of people included a manual setting for individual posts, as well as the ability to automatically archive all posts after a certain period of time.

Users also have the option to unarchive a post to make it public again. If beta testing goes well, the ability to archive posts is likely to be rolled out globally as an option rather than a default behavior, which Mosseri said was the overwhelming preference based on user feedback.

When it launched back in July, Threads was very barebones, with Meta working to add new functionality on a regular basis to bring the network in line with X (Twitter). It has since gained a web app, an ability to search for posts, and a post editing feature. Just last week, Threads began rolling out an option to some users to filter search results by the most recent posts, rather than just posts suggested by its algorithm.

The slow trickle of new features appears to be gradually paying off: The app now has more than 150 million monthly users, according to Mark Zuckerberg, who revealed the figures on Wednesday during Meta’s first-quarter earnings call.

The number indicates an increase of about 20 million new users since February, suggesting steady growth, albeit at a slower rate than its initial rapid popularity, when the app racked up 100 million users in its first week. Zuckerberg said in October he believes Threads has a good chance of becoming Meta’s next billion-user app.

Elusive Spotify Lossless Option May Arrive as Paid ‘Music Pro’ Add-on

[ad_1]

Spotify’s elusive lossless music experience is being teased again, this time based on code uncovered by The Verge in recent builds of the Spotify app for Android.

General Spotify Feature
More than three years have elapsed since Spotify announced its intention to offer a “HiFi” premium option that would give users access to a catalog of CD-quality music tracks. Originally the company said the tier would go live by the end of 2021, but a shift in the wider streaming market upended that idea.

Apple Music has since rolled lossless listening into its standard subscription price, while Amazon stopped charging extra for its lossless music library. The moves effectively kiboshed Spotify’s original strategy of marketing an exclusively lossless HiFi tier.

That said, it doesn’t sound as if lossless is coming as a free perk. The latest rumors suggest that Spotify now aims to offer lossless audio playback in an optional “Music Pro” add-on that will also include new DJ remix features, which let subscribers “speed up, mash-up, and otherwise edit” tracks from their favorite artists, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Spotify will reportedly make basic versions of these remixing tools available as part of its Premium subscription (currently $10.99 a month, or $5.99 for students). Meanwhile, the more expansive offering will be part of a “Supremium” tier that will include its long-delayed lossless audio feature.

How much the “Supremium” tier will cost is unknown. Similarly, the intended price of the lossless “Music Pro” add-on for premium subscribers has not been revealed, but given that major rivals include lossless in their standard plans, asking users to pay anything more than a nominal fee in unlikely to go down well.

New Expert RAW update adds lossless option for higher quality photos

[ad_1]

Last updated: April 4th, 2024 at 16:22 UTC+02:00

This week, Samsung started rolling out a new update to its pro-grade mobile photography app, Expert RAW. The update pushes the app to version 3.0.05.12 and brings one major feature photography enthusiasts should find very useful.

Namely, Expert RAW v3.0.05.12 now lets users capture lossless RAW photos. This new option optimizes image quality by capturing RAW images in lossless format. However, the downside is that lossless photos use more storage.

You can grab this new Expert RAW update from the Galaxy Store. Once you have it, you can try this new feature by opening the app, accessing the app’s settings menu, and ensuring the “Lossless RAW” quick toggle is ON.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Lossless RAW option is available only for some resolutions, not all. We tested this feature on a Galaxy S24+, and we can confirm it is grayed out when using the 50MP shooting mode.

However, you can turn Lossless RAW ON or OFF on the Galaxy S24+ if you have the 12MP or 24MP shooting mode selected in the viewfinder. Needless to say, your mileage with this Lossless RAW option might vary depending on which Galaxy phone you use.

One UI 6.1 gets Instagram Camera lockscreen shortcut option

[ad_1]

Last updated: April 3rd, 2024 at 05:29 UTC+02:00

Before the official announcement of the Galaxy S24 series, it was reported that users could set Instagram Camera and Snapchat Camera as the lockscreen shortcuts. However, during the launch, there was no mention of that feature. It has started appearing now on phones running One UI 6.1.

One UI 6.1 brings Instagram Camera lockscreen shortcut

Devices running One UI 6.1 now have a new option for the lockscreen shortcut: Instagram Camera. As you can see in the screenshots below, the feature is present on our Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S24+. Both devices are running One UI 6.1 and have the latest beta version of Instagram. Once you set Instagram Camera as your phone’s lockscreen shortcut, you can jump directly to Instagram’s camera view, making it easier to create stories or post images and videos on your social media profile.

You can set Instagram Camera as your phone’s lockscreen shortcut by long-pressing on your phone’s lockscreen, entering your lockscreen password, selecting any of the lockscreen shortcuts (left or right), and then choosing the Instagram Camera option from the grid.

We couldn’t find the option to set Snapchat Camera as the lockscreen shortcut. Maybe the feature is still under development and could be released later. However, we can’t say for sure if Snapchat Camera will also appear as a lockscreen shortcut on Samsung phones.

With the Galaxy S24, Samsung introduced the Super HDR feature. The Galaxy S24 can capture, display, and upload (to instant messaging and social media apps) Super HDR images and videos. The Super HDR feature is built using Google’s Ultra HDR format and was introduced with One UI 6.1. Older phones won’t get the Super HDR feature.

Philips Hue Sync TV App for Samsung TVs Gets Subscription Option and Music Mode

[ad_1]

Philips Hue parent company Signify today announced an expanded relationship with Samsung, bringing the Philips Hue Sync TV app to additional countries, adding a Music Mode, and introducing a monthly subscription option.

samsung philips hue sync
As of last year, Samsung TV owners have been able to download a Philips Hue Sync app that allows Samsung smart TVs to be linked to HomeKit-connected Hue bulbs and lighting products. With the integration, content played on Samsung TVs is synced to the lighting in the room.

When the feature launched, it was priced at $130 for Samsung TV owners, but starting this spring, there will be a lower-priced subscription option. Customers can choose to pay a monthly fee of $2.99 to use the Hue Sync app on up to three TVs, or a one-time fee to unlock it on a single TV. The Philips Hue Sync TV app is launching in Brazil, Hong Kong, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, so Samsung TV owners in those countries can use the functionality.

On compatible 2024 Samsung TV models, there is a new Music Mode option that allows the lights to react to the audio of what’s playing on TV rather than the content of the screen. It is compatible with any music played on the TV, and will also be coming to Samsung TVs made in 2022 and 2023 later this year.

For those without Samsung TVs, the $250 Hue Play HDMI Sync Box paired with a streaming device like an Apple TV is the only way to get TV content that’s synced to lights, so the Samsung TV app provides a simpler solution for those who have Samsung TVs.

The Philips Hue Sync TV app is available for Samsung Q60 series or higher QLED TVs that were made in 2022 or later.

New iPad Pro Rumored to Have Matte Screen Option Like Studio Display’s Nano-Texture Glass

[ad_1]

Apple’s next-generation iPad Pro models will be offered with a matte display option for the first time, according to the Weibo leaker known as “Instant Digital.”

iPad Pro Matte Display Feature 1
The Weibo user explained that the ‌iPad Pro‌’s new matte display option will be offered in addition to the standard, glossy glass finish. It apparently features -4° to +29° of haze and may tout some kind of blue-light blocking technology to help protect the eyes. Matte screen protectors for the iPad have become extremely popular, so it is possible that Apple is trying to offer such an option at the point of purchase for those who want it.

It is not known if the matte display option will be “nano-texture” glass like on the Pro Display XDR and Studio Display, but it seems plausible. Nano-texture glass is effectively a matte finish that scatters light to minimize glare, which is ideal in environments with bright light sources. While matte screen coatings effectively reduce reflections, they also make the image slightly more dull and hazy. Nano-texture glass features an etched surface to help preserve image quality.

Nano-texture glass has only been offered on desktop displays so far. It is harder to clean owing to its textured surface that grips oil and debris more tightly, and Apple cautions that it should only be cleaned with a polishing cloth made with soft, non-abrasive material. It is not clear how a matte display on the ‌iPad‌ would hold up to fingerprints as a result.

The matte display option may also be available on the next-generation iPad Air models, but the leaker could not confirm if this will be the case. They added that new ‌iPad‌ models will be announced next week.

Earlier this week, Instant Digital said that the iPhone 17 will feature an anti-reflective display that is more scratch-resistant than Apple’s Ceramic Shield found on recent models. It is not apparent if this technology is related to the new matte display option for the ‌iPad‌, but it is a possibility.

Instant Digital has a mixed track record in terms of revealing accurate information about Apple’s plans, but their claims are worth paying attention to. The source was first to report the iPhone 14‘s Yellow spring refresh in 2023, Spatial Video capture on the iPhone 15 Pro, and the Apple Watch Series 9‘s minor hardware update, as well as being the only source of the only rumor claiming that the iPhone 15 and ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus would feature frosted back glass. However, they also made claims about several iOS 17 features and the release of a new iPad Air in October 2023 that did not pan out.

How to Choose the Best Option for Your Business

If you are running an international company, you know how important it is to have a reliable and cost-effective account for your business transactions. Whether you are selling products or services across borders, paying your suppliers or employees in different currencies, or managing cash flows and finances in multiple markets, you need an account to handle your international business needs.

However, with many options available, it may be challenging to choose the one you need as each account for international companies comes with its own features, benefits, and drawbacks. We will compare some of the most popular and reputable options and help you decide which one suits your business best.

What to look for in an account for international companies

When choosing an account for your international company, consider factors like fees, exchange rates, accessibility, security, and flexibility first and foremost.

International accounts often charge fees for currency conversion, foreign exchange transactions, wire transfers, ATM withdrawals, and account maintenance. It makes sense to look for an account that offers low or no fees for these services, or at least transparent and reasonable fees that match the value you get.

With different exchange rates for converting currencies that can affect the amount of money you receive or pay in foreign transactions, choosing the right account for your international company is of paramount importance. Try to find an account that offers fair and competitive exchange rates or at least discloses them clearly and upfront.

International accounts come with different accessibility options via online or mobile banking, physical branches, ATM network, or customer support. It pays to head for an account that offers easy and convenient access to your money and account information, wherever and whenever you need it.

You can’t underestimate security as far as banking is concerned. Encryption, authentication, verification, and fraud prevention are only a couple of security options available to corporate account holders. No doubt, accounts with strong and reliable security features that would protect your money and data from unauthorized access or theft work best.

International accounts differ by degree of flexibility. They may offer international money transfers, online platform integration, credit and loan services, among other things. An account with flexible and versatile options is the one that deserves the most attention.

The best accounts for international companies

Based on these factors, we have selected some of the best accounts for international companies available in the market. Here is a brief overview of each account:

  • Wise Business (formerly known as TransferWise) is one of the best accounts for international companies overall. It allows you to create a local bank account that accepts over 50 multiple currencies, enabling truly borderless transactions. It also offers low and transparent fees, fair exchange rates (the same as Google’s), fast and easy money transfers, online banking and mobile app access (with instant notifications), strong security features, and integration with online platforms. Wise Business is ideal for online businesses that sell or buy products or services across borders.
  • Airwallex is another top option for international companies. It offers multi-currency bank accounts that allow you to send and receive money in different currencies without conversion fees. With low and transparent fees, competitive exchange rates, fast and secure money transfers, online banking and mobile app access with real-time tracking, encryption, and integration with online platforms, Airwallex is a top choice for e-commerce businesses that operate in multiple markets.
  • Revolut Business is one more great choice. It offers multi-currency bank accounts (over 28) that allow you to send and receive money without conversion fees. Apart from it, you will enjoy low fees, fair exchange rates, fast and easy money transfers, online banking and mobile app access (with instant notifications), strong security features (such as biometric verification), and integration with online platforms (such as Amazon). Revolut Business is ideal for small businesses that need simple and convenient accounts for international transactions.
  • US-based international companies should consider Novo. A US business checking account allows you to send and receive money in different currencies without conversion fees. With no monthly fees, no minimum balance fees, and no transaction fees, Novo offers competitive exchange rates. All the top features like fast and secure money transfers, online banking, mobile app access, encryption, and online platform integration are here for you.
  • If you are based in the UK and need a simple and convenient account for international transactions, think about Tide. It comes with a UK business current account that allows you to send and receive money in different currencies avoiding conversion fees. It also offers low and transparent commissions (only a small percentage of the amount transferred), fair exchange rates (based on interbank rates), fast and easy money transfers (that only take seconds or minutes), online banking and mobile app access (with instant notifications), strong security features (such as biometric verification), and integration with online platforms like Amazon.

Challenges in managing international accounts

While international accounts offer numerous benefits, managing them comes with its own set of challenges.

Due to the diverse financial systems and regulations across the globe, companies may face challenges with account management. They need to have specialized financial expertise to cope with them. Another challenge is currency risk, which can lead to unexpected financial losses because of exchange rate fluctuations. Sophisticated tools and strategies are necessary to handle it, which can be rather daunting. International accounting standards and tax regulations are also not to be sneezed at, let alone that integrating international accounts into a company’s existing financial systems can be technically hard. Compatibility issues and data synchronization may hamper the efficiency of global financial operations. Transferring financial data across borders creates risks to data privacy and security. Hence, to safeguard sensitive financial information, companies shall have robust cybersecurity measures in place.

While managing international accounts may be complex and challenging, the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks. Companies that invest in the expertise and infrastructure required to effectively manage international accounts are better positioned to thrive in the global marketplace.
