If you’re looking to cancel your Virgin Media broadband and move on to a new broadband deal, you probably have a number of questions surrounding how possible it is to do, and whether or not it’s a complicated process.
The good news is you’re free to cancel your Virgin Media contract whenever you want. However, depending on your current contract status with Virgin Media, you may need to pay exit fees to do this. What’s more, because Virgin Media operates on its own independent cable network, switching to a different provider can be a little trickier than usual.
So to point you in the right direction, we’ve put this guide together that explains how to cancel Virgin Media broadband, what key considerations to make first and how and where you can find a new tariff.
Before you cancel Virgin Media broadband
Before you take the plunge and tell Virgin that you want to leave, you should investigate the following first:
Your contract status
If you are still within your fixed contract period, it’s likely that you’ll face a penalty fee if you want to cancel your Virgin Media broadband. Therefore it’s useful to look into your current contract status to see when it ends or if it has already ended and take the necessary steps from there.
The broadband in your area
Get the hottest deals available in your inbox plus news, reviews, opinion, analysis and more from the TechRadar team.
Even though you can access Virgin Media right now, it doesn’t necessarily mean other ultrafast broadband options are available in your location. Virgin has its own cable network, but most other providers use the Openreach network, so it’s a good idea to check what broadband is available in your area before you switch.
What deals are available
Another big consideration should be what broadband deals are on offer when you look to move to another broadband supplier – especially if you’re looking to save money each month. As such, you should do some market research first to see what the best broadband deals right now might include.
How to cancel Virgin Media broadband
If you’re looking to cancel Virgin Media broadband to your home, there are numerous ways you can go about this.
If your circumstances are more difficult, Virgin Media offers solutions for those moving home, those suffering from a critical illness, those who have had a recent bereavement, and in some circumstances, those struggling with the cost of living. All of these scenarios will be covered below to ensure you know exactly what you need to do to cancel your broadband deal.

For those of you whose fixed-term contract with Virgin Media has ended – or who are still in the initial 14-day cooling-off period – you can cancel without incurring any fees. However, you have to give Virgin 30 days’ notice, as this is stipulated in your contract terms.
You can cancel through any of the following methods:
You can call Virgin Media on 150 from your Virgin Media home phone or 0345 454 1111 from any other phone line.
You can also send them written confirmation that you want to cancel via the post to the following address: Virgin Media, Sunderland, SR43 4AA. You’ll need to make sure you include your name, address and account number.
Finally, you could use Virgin Media’s ‘online chat’ function on its website and this can be an easier form of communication for those who want to cancel quickly but would rather not speak to someone over the phone.
The process of cancelling your Virgin Media deal if you are still in contract is very much the same as if you were no longer under contract. Simply give the 30-day notice using any of the above Virgin Media contact methods. The core difference is the high likelihood that you’ll have to pay cancellation fees – which it calls ‘Early Cancellation Fees’.
How much these fees will be can also vary depending on how long you have left on your contract. In its official guidance, Virgin Media states:
“Early Disconnection Fees vary between customers as the calculation of how much is charged depends on the services that you have, how much you pay for those services (including any discounts or offers), and how much of your minimum period remains for each service. Therefore, the charge will be different for customers, even if services are the same”.
Call Virgin Media on 150 from your Virgin Media home phone or if you are using another phone, call 0345 454 1111.
Send a written confirmation that you want to cancel via post to: Virgin Media, Sunderland, SR43 4AA. Make sure you include your name, address and account number.
If you’re moving house and don’t want to take your broadband with you, the best option is to use Virgin’s online chat or phone service to discuss your options. If you’re still under contract you may also need to pay an exit fee. However, in some cases, these can be waived if you’re moving to a property where you can no longer access Virgin Media’s broadband network.
In the case of a bereavement, Virgin Media has a dedicated phone line where the bereaved or a representative can choose what to do with the account – either close it or transfer it to another person. The number for this is 0800 952 2302 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 8 am to 16:30 pm.
You can also manage this process via email by downloading and completing Virgin’s ‘Bereavement Disconnect form’ and sending it back.
The same helpline – 0800 952 2302 – is also open to those looking to cancel due to critical illness. The customer support on this number should be able to talk you through your options.
If you are struggling financially due to the cost of living crisis, you can also follow the above approaches to look to cancel your broadband. However, Virgin does have social tariffs and other financial support options that they will likely look to discuss with you to see if they can help make your broadband more affordable.
Call Virgin Media on 150 from your Virgin Media home phone or if you are using another phone, call 0345 454 1111.
Send a written confirmation that you want to cancel via post to: Virgin Media, Sunderland, SR43 4AA. Make sure you include your name, address and account number.
Cancel your Virgin Media broadband: frequently asked questions
If you still have further questions surrounding how to cancel your Virgin Media broadband deal, we’ve covered some of the most frequently asked questions below to help you find the information you need.
Does Virgin Media have a cancellation notice period?
The standard notice period for cancellation with Virgin Media is 30 days. This can, however, be waived if certain conditions are met, for example, if your service doesn’t match what was outlined in your Virgin Media broadband contract.
Will I need to return my Virgin Media router?
Sometimes, but not always. It often depends on how old your router is and how long you’ve had it. If Virgin does want its tech back, it will let you know and send you a prepaid package to use to return it.
Can I cancel Virgin Media broadband if it’s being too slow?
Possibly. Virgin has agreed to Ofcom’s ‘broadband speed code of practice’ meaning customers have a right to leave their contract penalty-free. This is providing you can prove Virgin hasn’t delivered a guaranteed minimum broadband speed and that it hasn’t resolved any of these speed issues within a month.
Can I cancel Virgin Media broadband without contacting them?
Yes, but it depends on your new provider. As part of the switching process, some broadband suppliers will say they will manage all of this for you, but it’s still worth letting Virgin know by yourself too, especially if you’re moving mid-contract.
Do I get to keep my phone number?
When you cancel your Virgin broadband, you should be able to keep your old phone number. You just need to let Virgin and also your new provider know that you want to keep it.
Do I get to keep my Virgin Media email address?
Once you leave Virgin Media, your @virginmedia.com email address will be closed within 90 days.

Podcasts and radio appearance can disseminate your science and raise your profile.Credit: Mixetto/Getty
Eighteen months ago, I had zero media experience. I’m a physical-activity researcher in the school of Allied Health and Human Performance at the University of South Australia in Adelaide. In the three years since completing my PhD, I hadn’t written articles for anyone outside my scientific community, courted mentions in a newspaper or even thought about speaking on the radio or on podcasts. I was content to spend my days head-down in research, analysing data and aiming to publish papers. Media publicity was nowhere on my radar.
At the start of 2023, along with my colleagues, I published a major systematic review in the British Journal of Sports Medicine1 that summarized much of the research on how exercise can help to reduce depression and anxiety. It was unusual for two main reasons. First, we synthesized all the evidence in the field, which involved collating the results of nearly 100 systematic reviews. Second, we analysed the most effective exercise types, along with varying intensities and durations of exercise and the effects across diverse clinical and non-clinical populations.
How to work with your institution’s press office to maximize the reach of your work
We found overwhelming evidence that exercise improves mental health across numerous healthy and clinical populations. Higher-intensity physical activity was linked to more substantial improvements in symptoms, but the effectiveness of interventions decreased with longer programmes of training.
The findings stuck a chord with many people, so the review ended up getting a lot of attention. I received requests from around the world to do radio interviews and go on podcasts. I was also invited to give talks and presentations in-person across Australia and virtually for international events.
Researchers should court media attention responsibly, with the ultimate goal of informing the public about scientific breakthroughs. But I’ve found that it can also raise your personal profile and advance your career.
Spreading the message
Over the past year, my media exposure has continued, with my research being featured in outlets including The Wall Street Journal, CNN, the Daily Mail, Yahoo, Times Higher Education, Cosmos magazine, Medical News Today and Science Daily. This has opened up unexpected opportunities. It has resulted in researchers from around Australia reaching out to me to collaborate on further reviews and meta-analyses on topics related to physical activity and lifestyle behaviours, allowing me to expand my research into different domains.
Collection: Science communication
My media exposure has also led to industry collaborations. One Australian start-up company, which runs an app that aims to help office workers to exercise, reached out and provided funding for me to evaluate the effectiveness of their tool. The results are being prepared for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. The opportunity not only enabled valuable research examining an intervention in a real-world setting, but also laid the groundwork for potential collaborations with industry partners.
Furthermore, media exposure has helped me to develop valuable transferable skills. I had to hone my presentation skills to prepare simplified explanations of my research and communicate across fields. Giving media interviews enhanced my skills in translating complex findings into everyday terms, using relatable analogies, being concise and staying composed under pressure. These have all proved invaluable for me in research, public speaking and collaborations beyond academia.
Ben Singh learnt valuable skills through media exposure.Credit: Ben Singh
Although the media interest was serendipitous at first, I’ve learnt to be pro-active in boosting media engagement. I now pitch my published papers to relevant journalists and outlets, highlighting what’s new, useful and surprising about my research.
I also regularly write for the website The Conversation to practise communicating research to broad audiences accessibly. I use social media to showcase my work, build authority in my field, share updates, promote publications and connect with peers and the public. And I’ve attended media training offered by my institution, learning skills such as: crafting compelling narratives and soundbites; developing an engaging presentation style; preparing for different interview formats; and translating complex concepts into useful and easily understood analogies.
Prepare to push back
Not all media interactions are perfect. I’ve encountered overly simplified coverage, misinterpretation of my work and pressured timelines. For instance, in the discussion section of our review in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, we compared our findings with those from past reviews on how medications affect depression. On average, our results showed that exercise was 1.5 times better than medication at improving symptoms of depression, in terms of effect sizes. This comparison was not the main purpose of our review, but several media outlets portrayed our study as a head-to-head analysis pitting exercise against medication. This oversimplifies the complexity of treatment options and leads to misconceptions about the role of exercise in comprehensive mental health care. The comparison failed to account for the interplay of various factors and individual differences, and could lead people to make inappropriate generalized decisions about their treatment without consulting medical professionals.
How to get media coverage and boost your science’s impact
To prevent this kind of misrepresentation, I learnt to articulate the actual objectives and limitations clearly up front during interviews, conferences and seminars. I also realized that I needed to be prepared to correct any inaccurate portrayals rapidly by providing proper context and caveats.
The potential rewards have made proactively seeking media opportunities worthwhile, even if it felt daunting at first. Rather than leaving it to chance, I’ve been strategic in promoting my own research through media engagement as an early-career academic. The visibility, credibility and skills I have gained have amplified my findings and fuelled my career advancement. I’m glad I stepped out of my comfort zone to embrace media exposure.

The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental IllnessJonathan Haidt Allen Lane (2024)
Two things need to be said after reading The Anxious Generation. First, this book is going to sell a lot of copies, because Jonathan Haidt is telling a scary story about children’s development that many parents are primed to believe. Second, the book’s repeated suggestion that digital technologies are rewiring our children’s brains and causing an epidemic of mental illness is not supported by science. Worse, the bold proposal that social media is to blame might distract us from effectively responding to the real causes of the current mental-health crisis in young people.
Haidt asserts that the great rewiring of children’s brains has taken place by “designing a firehose of addictive content that entered through kids’ eyes and ears”. And that “by displacing physical play and in-person socializing, these companies have rewired childhood and changed human development on an almost unimaginable scale”. Such serious claims require serious evidence.
Collection: Promoting youth mental health
Haidt supplies graphs throughout the book showing that digital-technology use and adolescent mental-health problems are rising together. On the first day of the graduate statistics class I teach, I draw similar lines on a board that seem to connect two disparate phenomena, and ask the students what they think is happening. Within minutes, the students usually begin telling elaborate stories about how the two phenomena are related, even describing how one could cause the other. The plots presented throughout this book will be useful in teaching my students the fundamentals of causal inference, and how to avoid making up stories by simply looking at trend lines.
Hundreds of researchers, myself included, have searched for the kind of large effects suggested by Haidt. Our efforts have produced a mix of no, small and mixed associations. Most data are correlative. When associations over time are found, they suggest not that social-media use predicts or causes depression, but that young people who already have mental-health problems use such platforms more often or in different ways from their healthy peers1.
These are not just our data or my opinion. Several meta-analyses and systematic reviews converge on the same message2–5. An analysis done in 72 countries shows no consistent or measurable associations between well-being and the roll-out of social media globally6. Moreover, findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, the largest long-term study of adolescent brain development in the United States, has found no evidence of drastic changes associated with digital-technology use7. Haidt, a social psychologist at New York University, is a gifted storyteller, but his tale is currently one searching for evidence.
Of course, our current understanding is incomplete, and more research is always needed. As a psychologist who has studied children’s and adolescents’ mental health for the past 20 years and tracked their well-being and digital-technology use, I appreciate the frustration and desire for simple answers. As a parent of adolescents, I would also like to identify a simple source for the sadness and pain that this generation is reporting.
A complex problem
There are, unfortunately, no simple answers. The onset and development of mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression, are driven by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors. Suicide rates among people in most age groups have been increasing steadily for the past 20 years in the United States. Researchers cite access to guns, exposure to violence, structural discrimination and racism, sexism and sexual abuse, the opioid epidemic, economic hardship and social isolation as leading contributors8.
How social media affects teen mental health: a missing link
The current generation of adolescents was raised in the aftermath of the great recession of 2008. Haidt suggests that the resulting deprivation cannot be a factor, because unemployment has gone down. But analyses of the differential impacts of economic shocks have shown that families in the bottom 20% of the income distribution continue to experience harm9. In the United States, close to one in six children live below the poverty line while also growing up at the time of an opioid crisis, school shootings and increasing unrest because of racial and sexual discrimination and violence.
The good news is that more young people are talking openly about their symptoms and mental-health struggles than ever before. The bad news is that insufficient services are available to address their needs. In the United States, there is, on average, one school psychologist for every 1,119 students10.
Haidt’s work on emotion, culture and morality has been influential; and, in fairness, he admits that he is no specialist in clinical psychology, child development or media studies. In previous books, he has used the analogy of an elephant and its rider to argue how our gut reactions (the elephant) can drag along our rational minds (the rider). Subsequent research has shown how easy it is to pick out evidence to support our initial gut reactions to an issue. That we should question assumptions that we think are true carefully is a lesson from Haidt’s own work. Everyone used to ‘know’ that the world was flat. The falsification of previous assumptions by testing them against data can prevent us from being the rider dragged along by the elephant.
A generation in crisis
Two things can be independently true about social media. First, that there is no evidence that using these platforms is rewiring children’s brains or driving an epidemic of mental illness. Second, that considerable reforms to these platforms are required, given how much time young people spend on them. Many of Haidt’s solutions for parents, adolescents, educators and big technology firms are reasonable, including stricter content-moderation policies and requiring companies to take user age into account when designing platforms and algorithms. Others, such as age-based restrictions and bans on mobile devices, are unlikely to be effective in practice — or worse, could backfire given what we know about adolescent behaviour.
A third truth is that we have a generation in crisis and in desperate need of the best of what science and evidence-based solutions can offer. Unfortunately, our time is being spent telling stories that are unsupported by research and that do little to support young people who need, and deserve, more.
VideoLAN is working on bringing its popular open source VLC media player to Apple Vision Pro, according to tech newsletter Lowpass.
The non-profit organization said it was currently developing a version for Apple’s spatial computing headset. “We already have a version of VLC running on the Vision Pro,” VideoLAN president Jean-Baptiste Kempf told Lowpass writer Janko Roettgers.
However, one of the reasons the app hasn’t already been released is that the potential user base is still considered too small. “I’m not sure there is any use case yet,” added Kempf.
VLC recently surpassed five billion downloads across desktop and mobile platforms, according to the organization. The cross-platform media player and framework launched 23 years ago as a student project, and continues to attract millions of new users thanks to its support for multiple codecs and its ability to play multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.
Meanwhile, work continues on VLC 4.0. Development has taken longer than anticipated, according to Kempf, with the core of the app being completely rewritten. Recent nightly builds put the focus on content, with the default player window replaced by a view of the user’s library. However, Kempf said that some changes could be reverted before the app’s official release.
Kempf said that VLC may even add access to FAST channels and other ad-supported online media in the future, potentially allowing users to start watching something right away.
VLC 3.0.20 is a free downloaded for Mac from the VideoLAN website.

In an age where filters and curated lifestyles dominate the digital world, BeReal emerges as a breath of fresh air. This innovative app, birthed by French visionaries Alexis Barreyat and Kévin Perreau, is a delightful blend of spontaneity and authenticity, attracting over 20 million users globally. Instead of focusing on perfection, the app celebrates real, unfiltered moments in daily life, resonating with an eager audience that craves genuine, unscripted snapshots of life on social media, from sharing images of hobbies to a dinner date or vacation. But what sets BeReal apart from the crowd, and why are major platforms taking note?
How BeReal Stands Out from the Crowd
BeReal, an app developed by French innovators Alexis Barreyat and Kévin Perreau has gained popularity among over 20 million users worldwide. Its mechanics are simple and quite brilliant if you come to think of it. After you install it and create an account, you’ll receive a daily notification at an unpredictable time of day. After receiving the notification, users are asked to take a picture of their current surroundings and a selfie, captured simultaneously by both their phone’s front and rear cameras. The two photos are then shared with a selected group of connections and offer an authentic glimpse into their daily life. There’s no time for extensive filtering, capturing the perfect light, or making things look different than they really are.
Furthermore, as you take a selfie, the application reminds you to just smile and stay true to yourself. This is the ethos of BeReal, a project that focuses on authenticity and encourages users to stay clear of the fake epidemic spreading on all the other social networks.
To browse other users’ feeds, you must first post on your own account. Unlike traditional social media platforms, BeReal doesn’t prioritize likes, followers, filters, edits, or ads. Instead, it playfully tracks the number of attempts it takes for you to post a picture and highlights any delays beyond the standard two-minute window. If you’re consistently late, BeReal will send you a humorous message reminding you to be punctual.
Popularity is a Two-Way Street for the French Social Network
With its playful mechanics and the message to return to a healthy social media environment, the BeReal app became popular very quickly. It’s even more impressive that it managed to do so without selling any advertising. The new social platform saw its highest popularity in the US, accounting for 33% of its user base. While one might expect France to be next, it’s actually the UK that comes in second with 9% of users. France ranks third, comprising 6% of the users.
Besides a rapid growth in popularity and downloads, BeReal was awarded the iPhone Application of the Year title in November 2022. But all this buzz around the revolutionary platform also brought it to the attention of the biggest and most popular social networks in France.TikTok responded to the popularity of BeReal by introducing a new feature called TikTok Now.
This function encourages users to post spontaneous photos or brief videos daily using both their phone’s front and back cameras. It’s concerning that the major Chinese social platform didn’t even try to hide its imitation. For instance, while BeReal sends alerts stating “Time to BeReal” flanked by two warning emojis, TikTok’s notifications read “Time to Now” accompanied by two lightning bolt emojis. Meanwhile, Instagram is developing a comparable feature named IG Candid Challenges, and Snapchat has recently launched a dual-camera feature.
Unique Yet Familiar Features
BeReal primarily presents posts from your connections, but also offers a “Discovery” tab, letting users peruse recent public shares from individuals globally. In a direct comparison with TikTok’s “For You” page, the contrast is clear. While TikTok employs a specialized algorithm to serve user-specific content and maintain engagement, BeReal doesn’t focus on promoting trending or popular posts. A casual scroll reveals snapshots of everyday life in places like Norway, Croatia, and the Canary Islands.
Despite efforts by platforms like TikTok, Instagram, or Snapchat to emulate the media’s features, there’s an aspect they can’t duplicate. BeReal’s independence from the Big Tech consortium is its unique strength. For those wanting an escape from TikTok’s hooks, Facebook’s detached environment, and Instagram’s lofty ideals of perfection, BeReal emerges as a refreshing choice.
Final Thoughts
Even with giants like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok as competitors, BeReal holds its ground, offering a fresh take in the online space. While major social media platforms mimic the central feature that skyrocketed the French app’s fame, BeReal still stands a strong chance of enduring.
One person posted a picture of late U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, who died in the Benghazi terror attack along with three other Americans. This week, when the official State Department picture of former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was shown, people on social media made fun of it.
Several well-known accounts on X made fun of the picture and criticized Clinton for the honor, pointing out that four U.S. officials were killed in a terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, while Clinton was in charge of the State Department.
The official presentation took place at the State Department offices in Foggy Bottom, Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. Current Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave Clinton the honor. During the event, the painting was taken down, showing a picture of Clinton standing in a green dress in front of an American flag.
When Clinton smiled and laughed when he saw the picture for the first time, the crowd cheered.
Later, X got the picture from the 67th Secretary of State. She wrote in the post’s description, “Today, I was pleased to return to the @StateDept and help @SecBlinken reveal my official picture as the 67th Secretary of State. We’re happy to share it with the people of the United States right here, in case you can’t make it to offices in Foggy Bottom soon.”
In a later post, the former Democratic presidential candidate talked about her first days in the job: “When I walked into the State Department as Secretary fourteen years ago, I knew that having the honor to lead the State Department and USAID would be a singular challenge and a unique chance to do good in the world. It was all of that and more.”
“I’m very proud of everything we’ve done, and I’m thankful to everyone at the Department for working so hard to make sure peace, growth, and wealth happen all over the world. Clinton said, “They continue to make me and our country proud.” But X users made fun of the former top U.S. official because of the picture. Co-founder of the Federalist Sean Davis replied to Clinton’s post with a picture of late U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, who was killed in the attack along with three other Americans.
Eric Spracklen, a digital expert and conservative X user, said, “The American people, on the other hand, were unhappy to see it. In response to Clinton’s tweet, the official account for the House Judiciary Committee sent a picture of the city of Benghazi. In response to Clinton’s tweet, the official account for the House Judiciary Committee sent a picture of the city of Benghazi.
Families, neighborhoods, and real-life bonds can help fight against social media’s “false perfection.” With the possible exception of facial plastic surgery and skincare, the world of medicine is not about trying to be perfect, but about dealing with flaws and keeping illness and death at bay for as long as possible, not about following a higher standard.
We doctors know too much about the human body to worship it. Our therapists call this worshipping of oneself “narcissism,” and they try to help their patients accept themselves as they are.
In this way, social media and apps on the internet are often our enemies. It’s weird to think that individuals on dating sites are obsessed with rich people with beautiful bodies and looks. Relationships that are based on faith and a good sense of fun are at risk.
On social media, many young women talk badly about marriage to avoid the pitfalls of having a child and a partner. Putting off marriage and starting a family to focus on a job is one thing, but making fun of the “institution” is another.
And the way social media makes people disagree goes all the way into politics and hate. In 2017, at a high school in California, an Instagram account was full of racist, sexist, and inappropriately mocking jokes. This caused a lot of tension in the town and led to multiple cases. Sadly, this is far from the only time this has happened. It was and still is too easy to attack, pick on, and ignore people who can’t hear or see you. The COVID pandemic made the problem much worse because people were stuck in their caves with only their cellphones and social media became their only way to talk to other people.
It wasn’t good for them, and the rate of worry showed that. Teenage girls were especially at risk. According to CDC data, almost two-thirds of teens felt very lonely and unhappy in 2021, and one-third of them actually thought about killing themselves as the number of teens who went to the emergency room for mental health problems went up.
It would be too easy to just blindly ask for more government oversight and rules, but this would probably lead to more stubborn refusal and not solve the problem at all. I agree with Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, who I have talked to several times and who says that beating loneliness and reconnecting with people is a good alternative to social media. I also like what Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia is doing with his Right Help Right Now program. This program is trying to fight the growing feeling of isolation and the mental health problem that is getting worse because of the outbreak. In an interview I did with him last week for Fox News, he told me that social media’s presence in every part of so many Americans’ lives only makes them feel more alone.
Youngkin also said, “Children belong to their families, not to the government. So, it’s very important to make sure that parents are always given power and the right to make choices with their child. We need to save this age, which is in danger of dying out. And at the center of it all is the part parents play in the lives of their children.”
Families, communities, and in-person bonds where kids, teens, and young people learn to accept and love each other “warts and all” are the best ways to fight the fake perfection of the internet and social media, which is luring and hurting our most valuable prize.
