When browsing the latest and best broadband deals, you might have seen some 5G broadband deals. If you’ve yet to consider this option then you might want to take a look at this top deal we’ve found from Three.
Three is the UK’s leading 4G and 5G broadband provider and currently its 5G Hub package is on offer for just £11p/m for six months. You can get this if you sign up for a 24-month contract and after this initial discounted period, the price goes back up to £22 a month – which is still pretty cheap.
Alongside this low cost, you also get impressive 150Mbps average download speeds from the 5G Hub, as well as unlimited data. This should be more than enough to meet the online needs of any small to medium-sized properties. Even those that like to stream in UHD, online game, and more on several devices at once.
Another positive is that you don’t need any invasive installation work or a landline. You simply get your 5G Hub, plug it in and connect to the network it provides. Three even has a 30-day money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied with its broadband. Moreover, if you order before 8 pm you’ll get your new Hub delivered for free the next working day.
One thing you will need to check though is whether you’re eligible for this 5G broadband deal in your location, as it does of course rely on the network coverage near you. This is something you can check directly with Three. It’s also worth noting that each April the monthly costs of the deal will increase by up to December’s CPI rate +3.9%.
Three 5G Broadband Deal
Why should I choose Three’s broadband?
As well as being the leading 5G broadband provider, as our featured deal shows, there’s a lot to love about Three.
It’s not just the easy installation, 30-day money-back guarantee and fast, free delivery that sets Three apart, a notable draw is that you can get speeds to rival other Full Fibre providers for half the price. What’s more, in the case of the deal above, it can be significantly less when Three is running one of its promotions.
Three is also reasonably flexible with its contracts as it also offers a rolling monthly package. For fairness, this is a little more expensive than its standard 24-month one, but in general broadband market terms, it’s still on the cheaper side. This option is also ideal for those who don’t want to commit to a broadband provider for the long term.
Three also has excellent customer service and there are ways to get help over the phone, online, and via its customer app. On the subject of apps, Three customers can also get rewards from its separate ‘Three+’ app, including money off experiences, food and drink, and products from popular retailers.
As a mobile network provider you can of course also get a phone tariff if you wish and get preferable rates on things like device insurance. However, as we’ve mentioned earlier, the fact its broadband relies on its 5G network means you might not be able to get Three’s service in your location.
So if this is the case, or you just want to see how cheap Three’s deals really are, we can help. Check out our best broadband deals guide or enter your postcode into our widget below. We’ll then show you what broadband deals are on offer right now in your area.
Chromebook users are set to get a single central hub to download apps and games for their devices, meaning they won’t have to worry about where to find the various diverse applications they might want.
Whatever app you might want to download – whether it’s Android, Linux, or a Progressive Web App (PWA – think of these as websites turned into apps) – you’ll be able to get it from the App Mall.
As Chrome Unboxed reports, the App Mall in ChromeOS will let users explore apps outside Google’s Play Store, allowing them to get deeper into customizing their laptops and doing more on their Chromebooks.
A common complaint many people have when it comes to switching to ChromeOS is that they’re often constrained to the Play Store, and hunting for apps outside of that can feel like a taxing experience.
So, the idea with the App Mall is that whatever you want in terms of all the above-mentioned software, you’ll be able to get it in one convenient location. So, this is pretty exciting news! And more people may be tempted over to ChromeOS given this easy way of accessing a lot more apps.
The App Mall is currently available to preview, and you can try it out by enabling the flag “chrome://flags/#cros-mall” in the Canary channel of ChromeOS 126. The App Mall icon will then be added to the app launcher.
Chrome Unboxed dropped a video on YouTube showing off the new app hub and it works pretty much as you’d expect. Once you find the app you want it’ll show you screenshots, and reviews, and let you pick which source to download the app from. It seems like currently in preview you can only download Android apps, but obviously, that’ll change as development progresses toward an official release.

Plugable’s new iMac hub is also a small shelf. Photo: Plugable
Plugable AD-6IN1 is a six-port hub designed specifically for iMac that connects to the desktop’s stand so it doesn’t clutter up the user’s desk. It can even be used as a small shelf.
In addition, Plugable introduced a small USB-C Ethernet adapter that can also supply power to a notebook or tablet.

Plugable AD-6IN1 hub cuts the clutter
A hub adds useful additional ports to your computer, but it can also add to the litter on your desk. Plugable dreamed up a design that avoids that drawback. For iMac users, anyway.
The AD-6IN1 mounts on the stand of the iMac so it’s up off the desk. Rather than adding clutter, it’s. a place for light items such as AirPods.
There’s a USB-C 10Gbps port, a USB-A 10Gbps ports, two slower USB-A ports, and paired SD/microSD card readers. And these face toward the user (unlike the iMac’s own).
“Having seen firsthand the frustrations of cluttered desktops and limited connectivity options, we wanted to seamlessly integrate into the iMac experience with the AD-6IN1,” said Lynn Smurthwaite-Murphy, CEO of Plugable.”It isn’t just about expanding ports, it’s about having a natural extension of the device.”
The iMac hub costs $39.95. It’s exclusively at Amazon.
Plugable USBC-E2500PD adds Ethernet to MacBook Air or iPad
This Ethernet adapter can charge your computer, too. Photo: Plugable
Adding Ethernet to a MacBook or iPad can take up a valuable USB-C port. That’s a potential problem with MacBook Air that has only two such ports, and iPad has only one.
Plugable USBC-E2500PD is an Ethernet adapter that supports connections up to 2.5Gbps. And it can simultaneously power up the computer at up to 100W via a built-in USB-C port.
While it works well, the 4G backup is likely a superfluous extra for most folks. If your internet service is stable, as it should be if you have full fibre, you’ll never need the 4G service. Folks lucky enough to live in an area with 5G coverage can get much faster backup service or even consider 5G home internet instead of wired broadband.
The Vodafone app is pretty barebones, but it’s easy to use. You can review connected devices, set up a guest network, and easily share login details with a QR code. There’s also a built-in assistance option that attempts to automatically troubleshoot and fix network issues. Parental controls and security features would be a welcome addition.
Competition and Availability

You can pay for fast internet service, but a decent router is required to get the most from it. Sadly, most ISPs in the UK do not supply good equipment. The worst offender is BT (British Telecom), which sends most customers the aging Smart Hub 2, a dual-band Wi-Fi 5 router that’s woefully out-of-date.
Most providers at least offer Wi-Fi 6 routers nowadays. I like TalkTalk’s approach. Instead of rebadging a white-label router, it partnered with Amazon’s Eero. The slower and cheaper Full Fibre contracts come with an Eero 6, but the Full Fibre 900 includes a pair of Eero Pro 6 routers, which is an excellent system for most homes. Interestingly, Three has also partnered with Eero for its 4G and 5G home broadband service.
Pricing and availability of Vodafone Pro II service depends on your location and required speed, but it starts from £39 a month with a minimum two-year contract. That two-year commitment is a definite turn-off, and you can expect annual price hikes in April, but it is a sadly common catch with UK ISPs.
Ultimately, Vodafone has kicked things up a notch with its Pro II service, and the Ultra Hub is perhaps the best ISP-supplied router you can get in the UK today. Many folks will still do better by picking the best service in their area (depending on budget and speed requirements) and then buying from our best routers or best mesh guides, but you will have to spend a few hundred to get something comparable.
Cybersecurity researchers from JFrog recently discovered three malicious campaigns in Docker Hub – Docker’s cloud-based registry service for storing and sharing container images. These campaigns contained millions of repositories that pushed generic trojan malware to the developers.
The conclusion of JFrog’s findings is that with open-source repositories such as Docker Hub, keeping them clean of malware is an immensely difficult task.
As the researchers explained, Docker Hub repositories have two key aspects: the images (an application that can be updated and accessible through a fixed name), and the metadata (short descriptions and documentation in HTML format, which will be displayed on the repository’s main page).
Millions of bad repositories
“Usually, repository documentation aims to explain the purpose of the image and provide guidelines for its usage,” the researchers explained.
However, roughly 4.6 million repositories contained no Docker images, meaning they couldn’t be run using a Kubernetes cluster, or a Docker engine – they were practically useless. They just contained the overview page which tried to trick the developers into visiting phishing websites, or other pages hosting malicious code.
Of the 4.6 million repositories, 2.81 million were linked to three campaigns: “Downloader”, “eBook Phishing”, and “Website SEO”.
In terms of the number of malicious repositories, Downloader was the biggest one, amounting to almost 10% of the entire share (1,453,228 repositories). However, it did not have as many users (9,309) as, for example, Website SEO (194,699). The latter, however, only took up 1.4% of the share, having a “mere” 215,451 repositories.
Sign up to the TechRadar Pro newsletter to get all the top news, opinion, features and guidance your business needs to succeed!
With 7.1% of the share, eBook Phishing was the second, with 1,069,160 repositories. It only had 1,042 users though.
JFrog disclosed its findings to Docker, which prompted the project to remove the malicious repositories – 3.2 million of them.
“Unlike typical attacks targeting developers and organizations directly, the attackers in this case tried to leverage Docker Hub’s platform credibility, making it more difficult to identify the phishing and malware installation attempts,” JFrog said.
“Almost three million malicious repositories, some of them active for over three years highlight the attackers’ continued misuse of the Docker Hub platform and the need for constant moderation on such platforms.”

It is India’s leading social-science research institute with a global footprint. The Centre for Policy Research (CPR) is credited with providing an evidence base for India’s economic reforms in the 1990s and helping lay the foundations for its current agenda on climate change.
In January, the government of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is seeking re-election, cancelled CPR’s international funding licence, a decision that is being challenged in court. The centre has also been served with a tax demand to pay around 10 crore rupees ($1.2 million) from India’s Income Tax Department.
The case against CPR, which is based in New Delhi, has shocked researchers and policymakers all over the world.
“CPR has a long track record of excellent scholarship, which has consistently illuminated and informed Indian public debates,” says Harald Winkler, an environmental economist at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.
Around three-quarters of CPR’s annual funding came from international grants, most of which the organization is now unable to access. Fewer than 10 staff members are now left of a total of around 200. The centre, has also lost its chief executive, Yamini Aiyar, who stepped down on 31 March.
Mysterious case
The Ministry of Home Affairs cancelled the CPR’s international funding licence under the 2010 Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, or FCRA. The law requires organizations to register with the government to receive international funds. The aim, as described in the text of the act, is partly to protect “the national interest” from international influence.
The difficulty faced by CPR and other research organizations is that the law does not allow them to transfer funds from international sources to partner organizations. This makes collaborative research impossible to do, Aiyar writes in a World View article in Nature this week.
CPR’s international funders include the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation based in Seattle, Washington, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office in London (FCDO and the Ford Foundation, based in New York city. Nature reached out to the funders for a response. The Gates foundation and FCDO did not respond before this article was published. The Ford Foundation declined to respond.
The path to India’s growth
Since its founding in 1973, the CPR has worked with governments of both left- and right-leaning parties. “They were doing objective, non-partisan research,” says Robert Stavins, who studies energy and economic development at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In 1991, the country’s then government, led by the Indian National Congress party, embarked on reforms to liberalize its economy after some four decades of government restrictions on industrial development. That liberalization fueled India’s subsequent growth, including the rise of new corporations in finance, information technology, pharmaceuticals and services industries.

CPR researchers helped to lay the intellectual foundation as well as provide empirical support for economic reforms through publications authored by staff. According to Aiyar, these include Towards an Industrial Policy: 2000 ad (1977) by CPR’s founding director V A Pai Panandiker and policy researcher P D Malgavkar; and Industrial Growth inIndiaby economist Isher Judge Ahluwalia (1985).
Ahluwalia analysed productivity data for 30 industries over a 20- year period up to 1979/80. She concluded that India’s industrial growth had slowed after the mid-1960s and that government controls on industry were an important cause. It was painstaking work, carried out at a time when data were not digitized. This and subsequent work, were among the sources of evidence supporting the 1991 economic reforms enacted by the government of prime minister Manmohan Singh.
Climate strategies
CPR researchers have also helped the current BJP-led government with its climate-change policy development. Ahead of the United Nations climate meeting COP27 in Egypt in 2022, the CPR convened a cross-ministry team of the government to craft India’s first long-term low-emissions strategy.
The process to create the strategy “is an example where we were directly invited into a formal governmental process”, according to Navroz Dubash, CPR’s former head of climate, energy and environment research, now based at the National University of Singapore.
“The invitation likely came out of the academic work we did,” Dubash said in an interview published on CPR’s website. These include studies showing how climate and development can be integrated. Dubash explained how CPR encouraged different ministries to be in the room when the strategy was being developed. “We designed a process where we said let’s make this a cross-government approach because climate change is not . . . just about environment and emissions, it’s about the choice of electricity system, choice of transport systems, patterns of urbanization,” he said.
CPR has “done exceptionally important work on climate and energy policy”, says Matto Mildenberger, a political scientist at the University of California, Santa Barbara. “It is one of the most important voices from the perspective of the global south.”
Action on accountability
In 2008, Aiyar and her team established a research project called the Accountability Initiative aimed at improving transparency and accountability in government. The programme studies and documents the government’s mechanisms for delivering and assessing its policies. It also analyses how communities can hold the government accountable, or improve its accountability.
The Accountability Initiative has highlighted the need for improvements to government funding mechanisms, says a US-based social scientist, who asked not to be named. For example, researchers showed a rising trend in late payments from a government welfare scheme for rural households, between 2016 and 2022.
CPR’s plight could have a chilling effect on anyone else attempting similar work, researchers have told Nature. “Now any research organization in India is going to be wary of getting involved in anything that may challenge the government and lead to FCRA status cancellations,” says Johannes Urpelainen, a political scientist who studies environment policy at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and who has partnered with researchers in India.
In Breaking Through, a memoir published in 2020, the year that she died, Ahluwalia wrote: “More than any other institution I have known, and particularly relevant to bear in mind today, [CPR colleagues] showed a genuine ability to leave political differences at the door and reap the benefit of differing perspectives on issues of national importance.”
Nature has reached out to India’s Ministry of Home Affairs and the FCRA office in New Delhi. No response was received by the time this article was published.
Samsung has released an update to the Quick Share app for Galaxy smartphones and tablets. It bumps the version of the app to 13.6.13.6 and brings a huge feature, and that is the ability to share files with Samsung’s Family Hub lineup of refrigerators.
At the moment, there’s no information about what kind of files you can transfer from your Galaxy phone or tablet to the Family Hub refrigerators. However, we are assuming that you will be able to send only photos and videos, as those refrigerators might not support other types of files.
Now that Quick Share for Android can send files to the Family Hub refrigerators, we are assuming that Samsung has already launched or will launch the Quick Share app for those refrigerators so that they can receive files from Android devices over Quick Share.
If not, Samsung might have updated or will update the software of the Family Hub refrigerators with the ability to receive files over Quick Share. Either way, you will soon be able to quickly share photos and videos with those refrigerators and enjoy them instantly on the large display.
Samsung launched a new Virtual Gamepad mobile app some weeks ago. If you never heard of it, you’re probably not alone. Unless you own a Samsung smart TV and often use it with SmartThings on your phone, chances are this new app flew under your radar.
Samsung didn’t make any official announcements for this app. It was released quietly on the Google Play Store, but people could find out about it through the SmartThings mobile app, assuming they have a Samsung TV linked up. Here’s all you need to know.
You can now use Gaming Hub without a physical controller
As the name suggests, Virtual Gamepad is a gaming-oriented app. Its primary purpose is to turn your smartphone into a game controller for your TV.
Using this app, you can play cloud games via Gaming Hub on your Samsung TV without having to buy a physical controller. You can turn your mobile phone into a virtual gamepad instead.
This is what it looks like by default. You have some control over the virtual button layout, but there’s no light theme or other color options.
As far as your Samsung TV is concerned, the Virtual Gamepad app on your phone is like any other standard controller connected to your TV. You can use it to control games and your TV’s UI.
Similar to a physical gamepad, the left virtual thumbstick and D-pad control the TV UI, while the A and B buttons work as “select” and “back” buttons — just like on a regular Xbox controller.
This means you can also use Virtual Gamepad on your phone to play smaller Tizen OS games on your TV — games you can download from the TV app store. In other words, it’s not just a Gaming Hub accessory but also a TV remote and virtual controller.
If you want to give the Virtual Gamepad app a try, you can download it from Google Play. But, without a Samsung TV, there’s not much you can do with it.
However, if you have a Samsung TV, you can open the SmartThings app on your phone, access your TV, and select the “Virtual Gamepad” option. It now resides under “Camera Sharing.” You’ll be redirected to the Play Store to download the app on your phone. If you don’t see the Virtual Gamepad option in SmartThings, make sure you’re using the latest version.
Another barrier lifted for Samsung TV owners
Samsung continues to make gaming more accessible to everyone. Gaming Hub for TVs is one of the best choices for casual gamers who don’t want to spend too much money or for people who have never gamed but are interested in trying this pastime activity at a low cost.
However, because Gaming Hub requires a controller to play games, this can be another barrier casual gamers with no prior gaming experience — and thus, no accessories — are facing.
This new Virtual Gamepad mobile app won’t replace the tried and tested physical controller for most gamers. But it can lift this other cost barrier related to controllers. Now, Samsung TV users who want to try Gaming Hub no longer have to spend money on an accessory they may or may not use in the long run. They can try games using the Virtual Gamepad app and decide later whether they should buy a physical controller.
Apple today released macOS Sonoma 14.4.1, a minor update for the macOS Sonoma operating system that launched last September. macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 comes three weeks after macOS Sonoma 14.4.
The macOS Sonoma 14.4 update can be downloaded for free on all eligible Macs using the Software Update section of System Settings. There’s also a macOS 13.6.6 release for those who are still running macOS Ventura.
According to Apple’s release notes, the macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 update fixes an issue that could cause USB hubs connected to external displays not to be recognized. It also addresses an issue that could cause apps with Java to quit unexpectedly, and it fixes an issue that could cause Audio Unit plug-ins for professional music apps not to open.

Some Mac users who updated to Apple’s latest macOS Sonoma 14.4 software release are experiencing connectivity issues with USB hubs and monitors with USB ports, with several reports of mice, keyboards, and other peripherals no longer being detected.
14.4 definitely breaks USB hub monitor functionality. Things worked without a hitch until my work MBP upgraded to 14.4 and now no devices are detected. On my personal MBP that is still on 14.3 everything is detected without issue. Clearly a OS related problem.
I have my MacBook (MacBook Pro 16 M2 Pro) connected to my monitor (Gigabyte M34WQ 34 Inch IPS Ultrawide WQHD (3440 x 1440)) via a thunderbolt 3 cable.
I have my keyboard and mouse connected to the USB ports in my monitor. After updating, my keyboard and mouse are no longer being detected on my MacBook. Before updating, it was working fine.
I have the same issue with my MacBook Pro M2 Max 64GB RAM and monitor Dell U3219Q; none of the USB peripherals connected to the Monitor’s USB hub work.
On the contrary, all peripherals work fine when I attach a Windows computer to the Dell Monitor. In addition, I check every USB peripheral by attaching them directly to the Mac, and of course, they are working.
I rebooted the Mac and detached the power plug from the Monitor, trying any configurations or sequences of rebooting as possible. Nothing is working since the update to Sonoma 14.4.
While Apple works on a fix, a handful of users have had some success by changing the setting “Allow accessories to connect” to “Ask for new devices” under the Security section of System Settings ➝ Privacy & Security.
Have you had a problem connecting peripherals over USB hubs since updating to macOS Sonoma 14.4? Let us know in the comments.
