“Quiero apresurarlo demasiado”, dijo Boone.

Threads Tests Option to Archive Posts as Platform Hits 150M+ Users

[ad_1]

Threads is testing an option that allows users to archive old posts so that they don’t appear on their profile, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

instagram threads app
In a post on the Meta-owned social media platform, Mosseri said that the archive option being tested with a small number of people included a manual setting for individual posts, as well as the ability to automatically archive all posts after a certain period of time.

Users also have the option to unarchive a post to make it public again. If beta testing goes well, the ability to archive posts is likely to be rolled out globally as an option rather than a default behavior, which Mosseri said was the overwhelming preference based on user feedback.

When it launched back in July, Threads was very barebones, with Meta working to add new functionality on a regular basis to bring the network in line with X (Twitter). It has since gained a web app, an ability to search for posts, and a post editing feature. Just last week, Threads began rolling out an option to some users to filter search results by the most recent posts, rather than just posts suggested by its algorithm.

The slow trickle of new features appears to be gradually paying off: The app now has more than 150 million monthly users, according to Mark Zuckerberg, who revealed the figures on Wednesday during Meta’s first-quarter earnings call.

The number indicates an increase of about 20 million new users since February, suggesting steady growth, albeit at a slower rate than its initial rapid popularity, when the app racked up 100 million users in its first week. Zuckerberg said in October he believes Threads has a good chance of becoming Meta’s next billion-user app.

8BitDo’s Nintendo-style Retro Mechanical Keyboard hits a new low of $70 at Woot

[ad_1]

If you’re in the market for a new mechanical keyboard with some retro flair, here’s a deal worth noting: the 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard is down to $70 at Amazon subsidiary Woot. That’s the lowest price we’ve tracked. This offer has been live for a few days, but it comes in $30 below 8BitDo’s list price and $10 below the wireless keyboard’s previous low. Unfortunately, the deal only applies to the device’s Fami Edition, which has a color scheme and Japanese characters inspired by the Famicom console Nintendo released in Japan during the ’80s. 8BitDo sells another variant that’s modeled after the US NES, but that one costs $20 more as of this writing. (A third model based on the Commodore 64 is also on the way.)

8BitDo

This is the lowest price we’ve seen for this recommended wireless mechanical keyboard.

$70 at Woot

Though it isn’t a formal pick in our guide to the best mechanical keyboards, the Retro Mechanical Keyboard earned a spot in our retro gaming gift guide last year. The vintage aesthetic is the main reason to consider it: If you dig old tech, there aren’t many options going for this kind of look. Still, this is a solid keyboard in its own right. Its tenkeyless form factor should be comfortable for most people, and it can connect over Bluetooth, a wireless dongle or a detachable USB-C cable. While it’s made from plastic, the chassis doesn’t come off as cheap. Its PBT keycaps are crisply textured, and its keys largely feel stable, with no major rattling on larger inputs like the space bar. It also comes with a goofy yet fun pair of NES-style “Super Buttons,” which you can program to perform different commands.

Be warned, though: It’s on the louder side. The Retro Mechanical Keyboard ships with clicky Kailh Box White V2 switches, which are generally satisfying to press but have a high-pitch tone that your spouse or coworkers may find aggravating. This fits with the retro aesthetic, but the keyboard might be best kept tucked away in a home office. There’s also no backlight or adjustable feet. The switches are hot-swappable, however, so it’s easy to change them out for a different feel down the road.

In the end, how much you enjoy the old-school styling will determine whether the Retro Mechanical Keyboard is worth getting. If you want something a little more subdued that costs less than $100, we recommend Keychron’s V Max series in our buying guide. But 8BitDo’s board is still a decent value, and this discount only furthers that. Woot says the offer will run for six more days or until the device sells out.

App Store hits 1 billion downloads: Today in Apple history

[ad_1]

April 23: Today in Apple history: App Store hits 1 billion downloads April 23, 2009: Less than a year after opening its virtual doors, the App Store reaches 1 billion downloads.

Peer-to-peer file sharing app Bump becomes the 1 billionth app to be downloaded. As a result of his purchase, 13-year-old Connor Mulcahey of Weston, Connecticut, wins a “1 Billion App Countdown” promotion.

He takes home an assortment of Apple products valued at more than $13,000, including a $10,000 iTunes gift card, a 32GB iPod touch, a Time Capsule and a 17-inch MacBook Pro.

App Store’s 1 billionth download

Hitting the astronomical billionth download so soon after launch showed the remarkable potential of the App Store. The simple idea — hosting a curated software collection filled with the creations of developers big and small — turned the iPhone into a device capable of doing almost anything.

“The revolutionary App Store has been a phenomenal hit with iPhone and iPod touch users around the world, and we’d like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve the astonishing milestone of one billion apps downloaded,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, in a 2009 statement. “In nine months, the App Store has completely revolutionized the mobile industry and this is only the beginning.”

At the time, Apple had sold 37 million iPhones and iPod touches, the two devices capable of accessing the App Store. There were around 35,000 iOS apps available for download. (By comparison, Apple today has sold well more than 2 billion iPhones, and the App Store houses an estimated 1.81 million different apps.)

Setting new App Store records

The App Store hit 1 billion downloads in an era during which Cupertino was very keen on celebrating such milestones. For example, in 2004 it marked the 100 millionth iTunes song download by giving that customer a 17-inch PowerBook, a 40GB iPod, a gift certificate for 10,000 iTunes songs and a personal phone call from Steve Jobs.

After the billionth App Store download, sales just kept climbing. In fact, by March 2012, Apple celebrated a staggering 25 billion apps downloaded. In 2020, the App Store enabled $643 billion in billings and sales, according to Apple.

And all of this from an App Store that a skeptical Jobs did not want to allow!

Victim of its own success?

However, the App Store’s astonishing success — and Apple’s tight control over the marketplace — gives antitrust regulators around the world a ripe target. Apple faces potential regulation at home and abroad.

The European Union’s Digital Markets Act already forced Apple to make changes to iOS and the App Store. iOS 17.4, released in March 2024, opened up the iPhone to allow third-party app marketplaces and sideloading on iOS devices.

It also opened the iPhone’s NFC chip to third-party payment and banking apps, giving users an alternative to Apple Pay. These and other measures are designed to loosen Cupertino’s grip on the App Store.

Can you recall the first app you ever downloaded from the App Store? Let us know in the comments below.

Acer’s new $399 Chromebook Plus 514 hits the mark for a solid budget laptop

[ad_1]

There are a frankly ridiculous number of Chromebooks on sale to choose from, but Google’s Chromebook Plus initiative that launched last fall has gone a long way towards standardizing some key specs for ChromeOS devices. That in turn has made it a little easier to pick ones that’ll provide a consistent quality experience without breaking the bank. Acer’s latest Chromebook Plus 514, which the company just announced today, is a good example — at first glance, it looks like it checks most of the boxes I’m looking for when recommending a basic Chromebook that’ll work for most people.

To make things confusing, Acer already sells a few Chromebook Plus 514 models; this one is the CB514-4HT and is priced at $399. Look for that SKU if you want to make sure you’re getting the latest one. This laptop is powered by Intel’s 13th-gen Core i3-N305 processor and pairs that with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage — that latter spec is a bit of surprise and is a lot more storage than I’d expect to see on a $400 Chromebook. To meet the required Chromebook Plus specs, this laptop includes a 1080p webcam with a privacy shutter. While the resolution is pretty solid, not all webcams are equal so we’ll have to see how this one performs in real life.

Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (2024)Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (2024)

Acer

The display is a 14-inch, 1080p touchscreen, so it’s not quite as tall as the 1,920 x 1,200 screens that I’ve seen on a number of other Chromebook Plus laptops. But again, at the price I’m not going to complain too much. It has a decent selection of ports, too: two USB-C and USB-A slots along with a microSD card reader. I wouldn’t have minded seeing HDMI here, as the USB-C ports could quickly be taken up by power and a monitor, but I just keep reminding myself this computer is only 400 bucks.

Acer says that this laptop will hit stores in early May, though the specific SKU we’re talking about here should also be at Costco as early as next week. The company also says it’ll have some other configurations available in the near future, though they didn’t say what’ll change. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a model with less storage or perhaps no touchscreen, which could drive the price down even more. If so, this might be a great budget option. But even as is, you should get a pretty good laptop here for the price.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender show hits more trouble as it loses yet another showrunner

[ad_1]

Albert Kim, the showrunner for Netflix’s live-action fantasy series Avatar: The Last Airbender, is moving on – and that means the show will enter its second season with its third showrunner in charge.

That may seem like a lot of showrunners for a show with only one season so far, but it was in development for a long time before it actually aired, with Netflix ordering it in 2018, six years before it finally made it to the screen.
