Sony’s first-party PlayStation gaming headsets can be hit or miss. Good news! The latest version, the Pulse Elite wireless headset, is more of the former. It costs $150, can pair with multiple devices at once, and even comes with a wireless charging hanger.

This headset’s predecessor was a miss, touting 3D audio and impressive sound, but it was made from harsh, flimsy plastic, didn’t support a Bluetooth connection, and worst of all, it wasn’t even necessary to get all the benefits of 3D audio. Sony’s Tempest 3D audio system works with plenty of other headphones.

The Pulse Elite remedies many of those issues. It supports Bluetooth audio—which you can use simultaneously alongside the PlayStation Link adapter connection. The earcups are more comfortable, and the plastic is less flimsy; it just feels better all around. If that was all the Pulse Elite improved, it would be worth the extra $50 over the older model, but it’s the wireless charging hanger that cinches it for us.

Striking Design

The design aesthetic of the PS5 struck a chord when it first dropped, and since then all of the company’s accessories have followed suit. For better or worse. These headphones are probably closer to the “better” side than, say, the PS5 camera taco. The white headband extends down around the earcups, with a swoosh toward the front. The built-in mic slides out of one of the pointed white tips. It’s a striking design without looking outright silly.

There’s a soft, fabric strap inside the headband that keeps the headphones supported without weighing on the top of your head too much. The soft, plush earcups wrap around your ears, helping to isolate them without pressing too hard on the sides of your head. You can adjust each earcup up and down to find the perfect fit.

The only thing I find particularly annoying is how the earcups are attached to the headset. Each is held on by a type of ball joint that can rotate freely in any direction. In theory, this helps make sure that the earcups aren’t resting on your head at a weird angle, lightly jamming into the sides of your head. In practice, the ball joints shift a lot. There’s also a slight, almost imperceptible clicking noise as the joint shifts around. It would be imperceptible if it wasn’t right next to my ear.

This is only an issue when I am moving my head, but even slight movements result in this low but troublesome clicking noise. I tend to fidget more than most, so it might be a problem just for me, but it was annoying to have this frequent, irritating noise intermixed with what is otherwise great audio.

Sensitive Sound

The annoyance of the earcup clicking aside, these headphones sound excellent. The Pulse Elite uses planar magnetic drivers. These use a thin, flat diaphragm that’s larger than the typical dynamic drivers in most headphones you’ve probably used. They’re also more sensitive, which allows them to produce more precise, accurate sound.

The result is that, when playing games like Overwatch 2, I found it easier to hear individual sounds that typically are blurred together on other headsets. I play as the character Mercy (and occasionally as Lifeweaver), and being able to hear the subtle footsteps of a Genji or Tracer—or the less subtle footsteps of a Reaper—behind me can mean the difference between life and death. With these headphones, distinct sounds are just a little bit easier to make out.

The Pulse Elite comes with a PlayStation Link USB dongle for a low-latency wireless connection, and it can also pair simultaneously via Bluetooth. This is most helpful if you want to, say, play some music from your phone while you’re delivering packages in Death Stranding.

If I’ve learned nothing else from watching Netflix’s 3 Body Problem it’s that there are limits to what I want to experience in virtual reality.

I haven’t watched the full season of the sci-fi drama, which means I’m unlikely to spoil anything (but if you’d rather be careful, I suggest you stop reading now).

However, I’ve seen enough to be both blown away by the alien-built headset technology and also absolutely horrified by what this wearable gear can do.

For those who haven’t dipped into the show, which is based on an acclaimed novel, the story revolves, in part, around alien contact with inhabitants of a dying planet. We apparently reached out to them first, and they answered enthusiastically, and now seem to be enlisting humans in an effort to save their planet, possibly by destroying all of us.

The headset plays a crucial role in the plot in that it’s being used to recruit the earth’s brightest minds (or at least I thought it was).

Wear this at your peril

As a technologist, I have a habit of fixating on technology in TV and movies, even when it’s only there to advance the plot. I don’t think I’m alone in this, and I have good reason. When it comes to innovation, the past (or the future as depicted in the past) is prologue. Tom Cruises’ gesture-based computers in Minority Report presaged our own gesture-based, eye-tracking Apple Vision Pro. Most sci-fi films and movies hand characters ultra-thin transparent smartphones and tablets that are now starting to seem less like fantasy and more like near-term reality,

3 Body Problem’s headset, though, is not the same kind of near-future incremental tech fantasy. The metallic headsets are vastly more powerful than the best VR gear, including Meta Quest 3 and Apple‘s Vision Pro.

Sure, the show’s headset probably uses both eye- and gesture tracking but most of its best work appears to be at a neural level. The headset not only tracks brain activity, but it fills it with imagery and experiences that could best be described as lucid dreaming.

For as much as we can see, hear, and examine in current VR, headsets like Vision Pro can’t deliver taste, smells, touch, or sensations. Yes, you could strap on some haptic gear to feel a virtual gut-punch but none of that hardware is natural or organic. It’s a poor simulation of the real feel of touch, slap, hug, or kiss.

In 3 Body Problem, headset wearers can taste dirt, smell body odor, and feel a blade slicing through their neck. No one is claiming that what the characters see and feel is real. In one scene, a character reminds her companion that, while they appear to be boiling alive, “it’s not real” and with that simple phrase, she’s able to ignore the psychic pain, dive down to the bottom of the pot and touch the base to enable a core game function (fast forward).

The show struggles with realism, and to immerse yourself in this world, you must employ a fairly strong suspension of disbelief. Requisite for buying into the show’s conceit is an acceptance that extraterrestrial life is real, that there’s a technology that can erase people from not just videos but the actual view, and that a headset with no visible technology can alter your brain waves in such a way that you completely buy into the fiction it’s delivering.

Inside the fantasy

I will grant the show creators (Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff) this, they get the initial VR headset experience right. Every time someone puts on the stylish headgear, they see their own eyes, which then merge together before they’re thrust into the fully immersive and often dangerous 360-degree environment.

There’s almost zero insight into how these headsets work. We know nothing of how they’re powered and I noticed that even when seated in their slightly Vision Pro moon-case-like containers, there’s no indication that they’re charging up. Maybe the headset and case charge wirelessly.

While the headsets are too thin to hold much battery, I do believe they could house a decent Qualcomm Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1 chip. Do I think that chip has the processing chops to power the 3 Body Problem’s fictional game? No, I do not.

The headset looks like stainless steel but that would be too heavy and uncomfortable for the head. I’ll grant that this is probably some alien alloy. By the way, I wore a replica of the headset at Netflix’s 3 Body Problem activation at CES 2024. It was made of plastic and offered just an OK VR experience. At various intervals, Netflix pumped heat, cold, and wind into the room to approximate the show’s in-game experience. (see my TikTok below).

Whatever the technology, I don’t want this level of immersion. For one thing, I never want to know what it would feel like to be sliced in two by a ninja blade. For another, this is just the kind of experience that might encourage some to never return to the real world.

Perhaps I simply don’t get the point of this show. For me, it’s about a VR experience gone awry. More discerning viewers will probably connect with the parable of stability and chaos and how if we don’t take care of our world, someone or something will come to take it from us, while also trapping us in VR that looks like fun but is surely our worst VR nightmare.

Based on the leaks and rumors it seems increasingly likely that Meta is working on a cheaper version of the Meta Quest 3 – expected to be called the Meta Quest 3 Lite or Meta Quest 3s.

It’s not yet been confirmed, but the gadget is expected to be a more affordable version of the Quest 3 – at a price closer to the Quest 2 – that would see the Meta fully phase out its last-gen VR hardware. The trade-off would be the device wouldn’t have all the capabilities of the Quest 3 – likely sporting lower-resolution displays, less RAM, a worse chipset, or dropping mixed reality support (though that last point seems unlikely).

While we’re not convinced the gadget will look exactly like what’s been rumored so far, as the saying goes: where there’s smoke there’s fire. The fact that several independent leaks have come out suggests Meta is definitely working on something.

Meta Quest 3 Lite: Latest news

We’ve seen not one, but two distinct Meta Quest 3 Lite leaks – one render called the Meta Quest 3 Lite and one with more details that the leaker called the Quest 3s.

The Oculus Quest 2 was also at a record low price ($200 / £200) as part of this year’s Amazon Spring Sale, following a permanent price cut to $249.99 / £249.99 / AU$439.99 earlier this year. This could be a sign Meta and retailers are trying to shift stock ahead of the last-gen device being phased out before a Quest 3 Lite release.

Meta Quest 3 Lite: Price

As the Meta Quest 3 Lite isn’t yet official – meaning Meta itself hasn’t confirmed (or denied) its existence – we can’t say for certain how much it’ll cost or when it will be released.

But based on rumors and previous Meta hardware releases, we can make some reasoned predictions on what the gadget might cost and when we could see it in action.

Price-wise, we can reasonably expect it’ll cost around the same as Meta’s last-gen headset, given the Lite is billed as a super-affordable model meant to fully replace the Oculus Quest 2. It’ll certainly cost less than the Meta Quest 3.

This would likely see it released at around $299 / £299 / AU$479, which is where the Quest 2 started life. Honestly, we’d be more than a little disappointed if it was more expensive.

Meta Quest 3 Lite: Release date

As for the Quest 3 Lite’s release date, Meta usually likes to release new hardware in October. However, it might decide to mix things up with this budget-friendly gadget to avoid confusing it with its main line Quest and Quest Pro lines.

We predict the Quest 3 Lite will be announced and released as part of this year’s Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, which should be around June based on previous years.

If Meta sticks to its usual hardware release schedule, though, then a launch after this year’s Meta Connect – which we expect will land in September or October – could be on the cards.

Of course, this assumes the Meta Quest 3 Lite even launches at all.

Meta Quest 3 Lite: Specs and design

So far we haven’t heard many specs for the Meta Quest 3 Lite. The main leaks so far have been renders showing off its possible design.

These leaks suggest it’ll be bulkier than the Quest 3, likely because the Lite would adopt the fresnel lens system used by the Quest 2. This makes some sense as fresnel lenses are cheaper, partly because the alternative pancake lenses require brighter displays. However, considering pancake lenses lead not only to a slimmer headset design but also better image quality (and we’ve seen cheap headsets like the Pico 4 use pancake lenses) we’d be surprised if Meta didn’t use them in the Lite.

One of the leaks went into more detailed specs, suggesting it’ll have 128GB or 256GB of storage (instead of the 128GB or 512GB in the Quest 3) and 1,832 x 1,920 pixel displays (one per eye). Something seems off about the leak, though, in terms of the assets shared and the included info that could help identify the leaker (which seems like a bad idea for anyone trying to avoid the wrath of Meta’s well-funded legal team).

As such, color us skeptical when it comes to the details highlighted in the post.

Meta Quest 3 Lite: Software

Assuming the Meta Quest 3 Lite has the same or similar mixed-reality capabilities as the Meta Quest 3, we expect it’ll have access to all of the same software – which is to say, everything available on the Quest platform’s Store (and many other games and apps available through sideloading via third-party digital storefronts).

If it has significantly worse specs – such as the Quest 2’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 chipset – there may be some software that launches in the future that would be exclusive to the full Quest 3. But we expect the Quest 3 Lite would use a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 so, hopefully, this won’t be an issue.

We’ll have to wait and see what Meta announces.

Meta Quest 3 Lite: What we want to see

As for what we want to see from the Quest 3 Lite VR headset – acknowledging that its lower price will necessitate lower specs than the Meta Quest 3 proper – our ideal setup would boast the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset and 8GB of RAM as the Quest 3, though 6GB of RAM like the Quest 2 is, admittedly, a lot more likely.

Storage options would start at 64GB – as frankly, you don’t need a lot of storage space for VR apps, especially if you’re willing to download and delete them as necessary – and the displays would be a lower resolution than the Quest 3. A leak suggested the 1,832 x 1,920 pixels per eye option, and considering this is what’s used by the Quest 2 it does make some sense.

Pancake lenses seem like an easy win from a design and image-quality perspective (especially if Meta opts for poorer displays), and mixed-reality passthrough that’s at least as high-quality as the Quest 3 is also a must.

Beyond this, one rogue cost-cutting measure could see Meta scrap or change its Quest 3 controllers. However, given how much developers have emphasized to us the importance of VR handsets having a standard design, and the fact that many Quest titles don’t support hand-tracking, this might be a step too far.

The Meta Quest 2 may not be Meta’s latest and greatest virtual reality headset, but it remains a strong value for those who want to give VR a try without spending a ton of cash. Now, it’s even more affordable: A new deal has dropped the headset down to $199 at several retailers, including Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Meta’s own online store. That’s $50 below the device’s standard going rate (after a permanent price cut earlier this year) and the largest discount we’ve seen.

This deal marks the best price we’ve seen for Meta’s entry-level VR headset, and it comes with a $50 store credit for no extra cost.

$199 at Walmart

At Walmart, the discount comes with a $50 credit to the Meta Quest Store. The retailer says that you’ll need to redeem the credit in VR within 90 days of activating the headset, but it’s still a nice way to save on any games or apps you plan on using first. Best Buy, meanwhile, is throwing in Logitech’s Chorus add-on speaker for no extra cost. (Though we haven’t tested that accessory.) There are no special bonuses at Amazon as of this writing, but the deal comes as part of the company’s wider Big Spring Sale event.

We gave the Quest 2 a review score of 89 when it was released back in 2020, and it’s now the top budget pick in our guide the best VR headsets. To be clear, if you can afford the newer Meta Quest 3, you should still buy that instead: It has better screens, a faster processor, more RAM and a modicum of mixed reality functionality. Its full-color passthrough makes it easier to interact with the real world while keeping the headset on, and the whole thing should hold up better with new games going forward.

But it costs $500. For far less cash, the Quest 2 can still run just about all of the platform’s best games and apps, from Asgard’s Wrath 2 to Walkabout Mini Golf. It’s still completely wireless and relatively comfortable — insofar as a VR headset can be comfortable — and it gets around the same two to three hours of battery life. Compared to the Quest 3, its LCD screens aren’t as sharp (with a 1,832 x 1,920 resolution per eye instead of 2,064 x 2,208) and have a narrower field of view, but they should still be sufficient for most people getting into VR for the first time. With a link cable, it can still hook up to a gaming PC and play VR games like Half-Life: Alyx as well. If you’ve been curious about VR but aren’t sure if you’ll use your headset as anything more than a toy for occasional gaming, the Quest 2 should be enough, and this deal makes the upfront investment a little less daunting.
