Google Maps is getting two helpful new features in its latest update

[ad_1]

Google doesn’t tend to slack off for long when it comes to Google Maps updates, and users are spotting two new tweaks that have been quietly introduced in the Android app – covering electric vehicle navigation and identifying particular roads.

First up is the EV charging, as spotted by SmartDroid (via 9to5Google): in the Android app you can see nearby charging stations with a tap on the relevant filter button underneath the main search bar, at the top of the screen.

Love Chrome’s Memory Saver tool? Google will soon give you more control over how aggressive it is

[ad_1]

Google introduced the Memory Saver feature to its Chrome browser in February 2023 and has been enhancing it ever since. Now a new option will give users even more control over Memory Saver by introducing a way to configure its aggressiveness.

While Memory Saver is an excellent tool — as it addresses Chrome’s RAM issue by identifying tabs that are not being used and removing them from memory — there’s nothing in the way of controlling when a tab is flagged as inactive and therefore put on snooze. But a recently discovered flag in Chrome Canary by Windows Report shows that Google is testing out a feature that will give you three options for Memory Saver: Conservative, Medium, and Aggressive.

Verizon’s Google Pixel 8a deal gets you this brand new device for free with no trade

[ad_1]

The Google Pixel 8a has just been released, and Verizon is offering one of the best deals we’ve seen on the new mid-range flagship. Right now, you don’t even need to trade in to get it for free at the carrier.

Both new and existing customers can open a new line on an unlimited data plan to get the device, which retails for $500, for free. As of this writing, there are no options for upgraders, so this particular deal is only eligible for a 36-month plan sign-up.

In addition to the free device, you can also throw in a free Google Pixel Watch 2 and Galaxy Tab S9 FE tablet – two excellent devices that are worth over $800 by themselves. There is a catch here, however, as you’ll need to pay for cellular lines for any claimed devices (usually around $5 to $15 per month extra).

The latest Google Pixel 8a, as with past entries in the Google ‘A’ series, brings a respectable line-up of specs and AI-assisted features that the brand’s devices are known for. Alongside the powerful Tensor G3 chipset (the same as the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro), you’ll also get a better battery, 120Hz display, and seven whole years of guaranteed software updates – which should see you through a 36-month contract period easily. Our full review on this device will be landing shortly but you can head on over to our main Google Pixel 8a page for everything you need to know about this device in the meantime.

Get up to $450 off a Google Pixel Tablet when you trade in your old iPad or Android slab

[ad_1]

Google has an offer for iPad owners who are curious about the Pixel Tablet. The company has a trade-in promotion that covers at least the cost of the Pixel Tablet for iPad owners — if not more, depending on which model you have. It works with Samsung tablets as well, but those trade-in values are lower. The Pixel Tablet costs $399 (without deals) for 128GB storage and no charging speaker dock.

$399 at Google Store

The promo works with iPads as old as the sixth-generation model from six years ago. For that, Google will give you a surprising $399 — matching the Pixel Tablet’s base cost. That iPad model only cost $329 in 2018, so Google is overpaying by a lot for that one.

However, Google balances that with much worse offers for modern, high-end iPads. For example, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro with M2 chip (2022) only nets $450. Until this week (when the company launched a new iPad Pro and iPad Air), Apple sold that model for $1,099, so we don’t recommend that trade-in price. If you’re done with a high-end iPad from the last few years, you can likely sell it on places like eBay, Craigslist or Swappa for significantly more.

Sam Rutherford for Engadget

The Pixel Tablet stands out from its Android-running competitors by working with a charging speaker base that lets the device double as a smart display, making it much more versatile. Engadget’s Cherlynn Low thought that part overshadowed its core functionality as a tablet. “As a smart display, the Pixel Tablet mostly shines. It has a useful dashboard, an easy-to-read interface and impressive audio quality,” she wrote in our full review.

The tablet has a 10.95-inch display with a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution (276 PPI) and runs on a Google Tensor G2 chip. It weighs slightly over a pound and is lighter than Android rivals like the Galaxy Tab S8 and OnePlus Pad. Its back has a nano-ceramic coating that gives it a premium, glass-like feeling that you may not expect from a $399 device.

Accessories are where the Pixel Tablet stands out the most. Google’s Pixel Tablet Case, sold separately for $79, has a built-in kickstand that makes the slate more versatile. “What I love about the kickstand-hanger-combo is that it allows you to place the Tablet pretty much anywhere,” Low wrote in Engadget’s review. “So when I want to hang it off a kitchen cabinet to follow along with a recipe video or keep watching Love Is Blind for example, I can. And though the 2,560 x 1,600 LCD panel isn’t as vibrant as the OLED on Samsung’s Galaxy Tabs, it still produced crisp details and colorful images.”

The star accessory is Google’s $129 charging speaker dock, which you can use without removing the kickstand case. This product transforms the tablet into a smart display, potentially voiding the need for other smart home control hubs. The speaker has impressive sound for its size, making it easier to hear its responses if you aren’t right next to it.

Google’s fine print notes that the trade-in value will be finalized after receiving the tablet, and it could be lower if it determines the condition doesn’t match what you selected during the trade-in process. The refund will be processed on the credit card you used to buy the Pixel Tablet (or through Google Store credit if you return your purchase during that time).

The Google Pixel Watch 2 has never been cheaper

[ad_1]

Amazon has the Google Pixel Watch 2 on sale for $70 off. The Wear OS 4-powered smartwatch arrived last fall with a new stress-tracking feature, slightly longer battery life and a better heart sensor, as Google’s flagship wearable inches closer to rivals Apple and Samsung. Its current $330 sale price is a record low.

Google

The Pixel Watch 2 works with Android phones, so you’ll want to sit this deal out if you use an iPhone and don’t plan on switching. But those with the right setup get a sleek device with a round (1.2-inch) screen. The watch’s 41mm case (one size only) is lighter than its predecessor, thanks to its recycled aluminum material. It also has an IP68 water and dust resistance, meaning it has dust protection and can withstand half an hour of submersion in 1.5 meters of water.

This latest model includes a stress-tracking feature that uses the watch’s continuous electrodermal activity (cEDA) sensor to track changes in your skin’s electrical activity. “This new sensor can point to possible signs of stress using a machine learning algorithm that incorporates heart rate, heart rate variability and skin temperature,” Google explains. “When the algorithm picks up on physical indicators of positive and negative stress, including excitement, the Body Response feature will send you a notification.”

Fitness tracking is likely one of the main reasons to buy a wearable like this, and Engadget’s Cherlynn Low found the watch’s Fitbit integration performed very well in our full review. “I’ve been wearing the Pixel Watch 2 alongside the Apple Watch Series 9 to all my workouts this week, and they generally showed similar results,” she wrote when the smartwatch arrived last fall. It includes automatic workout start and stop prompts in case you forget to set up or end a session.

The Pixel Watch 2’s $330 sale price is for the LTE version of the Pixel Watch 2, so once you set it up with your wireless carrier, it can stay connected without needing you to keep your phone nearby. If you prefer the Wi-Fi-only version, it’s available for $300, which is $50 off its usual price.

Samsung Galaxy users in India can now install Google Wallet app

[ad_1]

Last updated: May 8th, 2024 at 14:49 UTC+02:00

The popular Google Wallet app is now available in India. In classic Google fashion, though, it doesn’t have all the features available in other countries. Google isn’t replacing Google Pay with Google Wallet, and both apps will continue to co-exist.

Google Wallet is not as feature-rich as Samsung Wallet in India

The Google Wallet app is now available for Android smartphones in India. It can be installed on Galaxy smartphones via the Google Play Store. It allows users to carry flight boarding passes, gift cards, loyalty/membership cards, and movie tickets. However, it can not store credit or debit cards to make mobile payments via NFC, and that feature is still limited to the Google Pay app in India.

Google Wallet Android App India Features

In other countries where the Google Wallet app is available, users can store their payment methods (credit and debit cards) to make mobile payments on the go. In India, users must use two apps for their membership cards, payments, and tickets.

In comparison, Samsung Wallet is a more straightforward solution. It acts as both a virtual wallet and a mobile payment solution. It can even store boarding passes, digital car keys, login credentials, mobile ID cards, and digital documents issued by the government. Samsung Wallet links to India’s UPI payments system for quick payments and mobile transfers.

So, if you want a single app for all your shopping, spending, and travel needs, Samsung Wallet is still the app you should prefer if you have a Galaxy smartphone.

The Google Pixel 8a was just announced, here’s how to pre-order the new smartphone

[ad_1]

Google announced the Pixel 8a smartphone today, one week ahead of the company’s I/O conference on May 14. We no longer have to rely on leaked info, as Google has confirmed the Pixel 8a will start at $499, the same price as the Pixel 7a at launch, and will ship the same day as the event. You can pre-order it now from Google’s storefront or from Amazon. The sub-$500 price tag maintains the A-series position as the most affordable handset in Google’s lineup. We were able to spend a little time with the phone to get some initial thoughts, and our full review will be coming soon. In the meantime, here’s what’s new about the newest Pixel phone.

Google

You can pre-order the new Pixel 8a smartphone now and it will ship on May 14. It’s $499 for the model with 128GB and $559 for the 256GB model. It’s available from Amazon or directly from Google

$499 at Amazon

The Pixel 8a upgrades to the Tensor G3 chip, giving it the same processor as the standard Google Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro. The new phone carries the same 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage as the previous generation, along with the option of 256GB of storage, that model is going for $559. The 6.1-inch OLED display is the same size and resolution as its predecessor, but the refresh rate is a smoother 120Hz. The screen’s got a little more dazzle too, with a peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits, an increase from the Pixel 7a that now matches the Pixel 8.

The battery is very slightly (about 100mAh) bigger, leading Google to claim a 24-plus-hour battery life, instead of the 7a’s flat 24-hour promise. Speaking of promises, the new budget Pixel comes with seven years of promised security and features updates, putting it on par with the 8-series phones. That’s two years longer than the support offered with the 7a.

As we expected, the camera array remains largely the same as the prior generation, with a 64MP wide and a 13MP ultrawide lens in back and a 13MP selfie cam up front. Magic Editor and Best Take, two of Google’s AI-assisted photography features that impressed us on the Pixel 8, have come to the Pixel 8a, as well as the new Audio Magic Eraser, which automatically cuts out distracting sounds from video recordings.

The Pixel 8a comes in three of the same colors as the Pixel 8 Pro: Obsidian, Porcelain and Bay but the 8a swaps in an Aloe option instead of Mint. Pre-orders for Google’s new Pixel 8a are now open and orders will ship on May 14.

Google is working on a faster Android setup process that uses Wi-Fi and a cable

[ad_1]

Setting up your Android phone might become much faster in the near future. Industry insider Assemble Debug recently dove into the code of Google’s Data Restore Tool and shared his findings with Android Authority. He found evidence within the files of a potential tool referred to as “MultiTransportD2dTransport” as well as a line of text that reads “Copying using cable and Wi-Fi for fastest speed”.

Putting two and two together, it appears Google could one day allow users to move data from an old phone to a new one using a Wi-Fi and cable connection simultaneously. Doing so would make the transfer process much faster – at least in theory. We don’t know exactly how much faster data transfers will become when using a wired and wireless connection simultaneously. Assemble Debug couldn’t find a whole lot of information in the files.
