In a first, Apple Watch AFib History gains special FDA qualification

[ad_1]

FDA qualifies Apple Watch AFib History

For the first time, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) qualified a digital technology  — Apple Watch’s AFib History feature — for a special research program. AFib, or atrial fibrillation, is a type of abnormal heart beat associated with heart attacks.

Apple Watch’s AFib History now qualifies for FDA’s stringent Medical Device Development Tools (MDDT) program. The program says which tools research sponsors can choose from to help develop and evaluate medical devices.

Apple Watch AFib History feature qualifies for FDA MDDT program

FDA first approved Apple’s AFib History feature just before it came out in 2022, after a clinical study showed it worked. And since then, plenty of anecdotal evidence of Apple Watch’s usefulness as a heart-health tool has come along, including stories of lives saved thanks to its warnings.

Wednesday’s news from FDA qualifies AFib History for a more specialized use in assessing AFib data in clinical studies related to developing and evaluating medical devices.

Specifically, AFib History now qualifies “to assess atrial fibrillation (a type of arrhythmia, or abnormal heartbeat) burden estimates within clinical studies through the Medical Device Development Tools (MDDT) program,” FDA said.

However, real-world use of the feature may be limited. That’s because of Masimo’s lawsuit over Apple’s use of pulse oximeter technology, used by the AFib History feature. Apple turned it off in current models on sale, Apple Watch 9 and Ultra 2.

Here’s how FDA describes the feature and its qualification:

  • The first digital health technology qualified under the MDDT program, providing a non-invasive way to check estimates of atrial fibrillation (AFib) burden within clinical studies.
  • Designed to be used as a biomarker test to help evaluate estimates of AFib burden as a secondary effectiveness endpoint within clinical studies intended to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of cardiac ablation devices to treat.
  • Designed to be used throughout the clinical study, both before and after cardiac ablation devices, to monitor a study participant’s weekly estimate of AFib burden.

WhatsApp for iPhone gains passkey support

[ad_1]

WhatsApp logo
Passkey support finally comes to WhatsApp for iPhone.
Image: WhatsApp

WhatsApp is making it easier to log into your account on your iPhone with passkey support. The feature will allow you to verify your identity through Face ID, Touch ID, or device PIN.

Once you have set up a passkey for your WhatsApp account, you can set up the app on a new iPhone through biometric authentication, skipping the SMS code entirely.

WhatsApp is the latest service to add passkey support

Passkey support in WhatsApp on iPhones comes seven months after the feature rolled out to the Android app. Setting up a passkey in WhatsApp is simple and requires jumping into the app’s settings on your iPhone.

WhatsApp is the latest service to add passkey support. So far, Apple, Amazon, Google, and 1Password have all added support for passwordless login. If you have not already, learn how to use passkey and get rid of passwords for good in your life.

Interestingly, WhatsApp’s key rival outside the US, Telegram, is yet to add support for passwordless login.

Setting up passkey in WhatsApp is easy

Meta is rolling out passkey support in WhatsApp in stages, so it might not appear immediately for you. This should change in the coming weeks though. Once the feature is rolled out, here’s how you can enable and use it:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Settings > Account.
  3. Select Account > Passkeys, followed by Create Passkey.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions after this to set up a passkey.

You can revoke a created passkey from the same menu in the WhatsApp app.

Meta notes that passkey support in WhatsApp for iPhone is available on iPhone 8 and newer models running iOS 16 or higher. You can grab the latest WhatsApp for iPhone build from the App Store.

WhatsApp for iOS Gains Support for Passkeys

[ad_1]

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp today announced that it is rolling out support for passkeys on iOS, a feature that will let WhatsApp users log in to their accounts on iOS devices using Face ID, Touch ID, or their device passcode.

Whatsapp Feature
Passkeys serve as a replacement for a traditional password, and because device authentication is required, passkeys put a stop to online attacks like phishing. With a passkey, there’s no password to steal, and no one-time SMS or authentication code that can be intercepted.

Passkeys are also more convenient, because logins are done with a quick ‌Face ID‌ or ‌Touch ID‌ scan rather than a password. WhatsApp passkeys can be enabled by opening up the app settings, choosing the Account section, and tapping on “Passkeys.”

Apple has supported passkeys since 2022, and they work on devices that run iOS 16 and later, iPadOS 16 and later, and macOS Ventura and later. Many companies have been implementing support for passkeys, including X (formerly Twitter), Google, TikTok, PayPal, Best Buy, Microsoft, PlayStation, and eBay.

dangerous strain gains ability to spread through sex, new data suggest

[ad_1]

A virulent strain of the monkeypox virus has gained the ability to spread through sexual contact, new data suggest. This has alarmed researchers, who fear a reprise of the worldwide mpox outbreak in 2022.

Evidence from past outbreaks indicates that this strain, called clade I, is more lethal than the one that sparked the 2022 global outbreak. Clade I has for decades caused small outbreaks, often limited to a few households or communities, in Central Africa. Sexually-acquired clade I infections had not been reported before 2023.

But since then, a clade I strain with an apparent capacity for sexual transmission has caused a cluster of infections in a conflict-ridden region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in Central Africa. A preprint1 posted on 15 April reports that 241 suspected and 108 confirmed infections are connected to this outbreak — and these numbers are probably a vast undercount because of limited testing capacity. Almost 30% of the confirmed infections were in sex workers.

Adding to the challenges, the region is facing a humanitarian crisis, and the DRC is contending with the aggressive spread of other diseases, such as cholera. The combination means there is a “substantial risk of outbreak escalation beyond the current area”, says Anne Rimoin, an epidemiologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who has worked on mpox outbreaks in the DRC since 2002.

Unheeded warnings

Monkeypox virus can cause painful, fluid-filled lesions on the skin and, in severe cases, death. (While the disease was renamed ‘mpox’ in 2022, the virus continues to be called ‘monkeypox virus.’) The virus persists in wild animals in several African countries, including the DRC, and occasionally spills into people.

The first large reported outbreak with human-to-human transmission , which was in 2017 in Nigeria, caused more than 200 confirmed and 500 suspected cases of the disease. Researchers warned at the time that the virus might have adapted to spread through sexual contact.

Their warnings were not heeded; in 2022, a global outbreak driven in part by sexual contact prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare it a public health emergency. That ongoing outbreak is caused by a strain of monkeypox virus called clade II, which is less lethal than clade I, and has infected more than 94,000 people and killed more than 180.

Although mpox infections have waned globally since 2022, they have been trending upwards in the DRC: in 2023 alone, the country reported more than 14,600 suspected infections and more than 650 deaths. In September, 2023, a new cluster of suspected cases arose in the DRC’s South Kivu province. This cluster especially concerns researchers, as it has been spreading largely among sex workers, suggesting that the virus has adapted to transmit readily through sexual contact.

This could lead to faster human-to-human spread, potentially with few symptoms, says Nicaise Ndembi, a virologist at the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention who is based in Addis Ababa. “The DRC is surrounded by nine other countries — we’re playing with fire here,” he says.

Health officials are so concerned that representatives of the DRC and 11 nearby countries met earlier this month to plan a response and to commit to stepping up surveillance for the virus. Only about 10% of the DRC’s suspected mpox cases in 2023 were tested, due to limited testing capacity, meaning health officials “don’t have a full picture of what’s going on”, Ndembi says.

Genetic analyses of the virus responsible for the outbreak show mutations such as the absence of a large chunk of the virus’s genome, which researchers have previously noted as a sign of monkeypox viral adaptation. This has led the study’s authors to give a new name to the strain circulating in the province: clade Ib.

Making matters more fraught, South Kivu borders Rwanda and Burundi and is grappling with “conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and challenges in providing adequate humanitarian assistance”, which “might represent fertile ground for further spread of mpox”, the WHO warned last year.

Vaccines and treatment needed

In 2022, many wealthy countries offered vaccines against smallpox, which also protect against mpox, to individuals at high risk of contracting the disease. But few vaccine doses have reached African countries, where the disease’s toll has historically been highest.

While the DRC weighs regulatory approval for these vaccines, the United States has committed to providing the DRC with enough doses to inoculate 25,000 people, and Japan has said it will also provide vaccines, says Rosamund Lewis, technical lead for mpox at the WHO in Geneva, Switzerland. But a vaccination drive in the DRC would require hundreds of thousands — if not millions — of doses to inoculate individuals at high risk of infection, she says.

It’s not clear how much protection these vaccines will provide against clade I mpox, but Andrea McCollum, a poxvirus epidemiologist at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, says that data from tests in animals are promising. Researchers are also conducting a trial in the DRC of tecovirimat, an antiviral that is thought to be effective against mpox. Results are expected in the next year, McCollum says.

The WHO and CDC have helped to procure equipment that will allow for more rapid diagnosis of the disease in the DRC, especially in rural areas, Lewis says. She adds that says the rapid mobilization of African health officials gives her hope that the outbreak can be controlled before clade Ib mpox starts spreading elsewhere.

Google Maps Gains New AI Tools, Updated Recommendation Lists and More

[ad_1]

Google today announced several changes that it is making to the Google Maps platform, including an AI update. Google Maps now provides better at-a-glance information on locations, with the details powered by Google AI.

Google maps feaure purple
Maps shows photo highlights and reviews that summarize what people like about a location. A restaurant’s food items can be identified using AI, and Google Maps will also provide cost, potential availability, and whether or not it caters to dietary restrictions.

Google says that it will now be easier to discover helpful recommendation lists from top sites and the Google Maps community in select cities in the U.S. and Canada. To use the feature, search for a city and swipe to see curated lists of recommendations from people familiar with the city. There are also Trending, Top, and Gems lists that highlight popular locations to visit when traveling. The feature is available in 40 cities this week, with more coming in the future.

To go along with the change to recommendations, Google is adding new customization tools for creating lists in Maps. Google Maps users can choose the order that places appear in their created lists to rank them, and there are options to link content from social channels. Google says that the list updates will be rolling out on Android and iOS later this month.

Finally, Google Maps users can expect to see a refreshed design that includes a cleaner home screen with fewer tabs and new pin colors that make it easier to find places on the map.
