May 3, 1984: Apple marks the all-important first 100 days of Mac sales, signaling whether the product launch is a hit with customers.
The results outstrip even Steve Jobs’ most optimistic targets. Unfortunately, not everything is as positive as it seems following the successful Mac launch.
Original Macintosh launch
It’s easy to forget today, but when Apple launched the Macintosh in 1984, the company was coming off a couple of high-profile failures. The Apple II remained a big seller. However, attempts to produce a successor in the form of the Lisa and the Apple III failed miserably.
Beyond a doubt, the Mac represented an immense technical achievement. However, the first-gen Macintosh 128K was also slow and underpowered. In addition, Apple still faced the threat of the IBM PC — a more serious, “respectable” choice for many people shopping for their first personal computers.
On top of this, the Mac cost a lot. Although much cheaper than some Macs that Apple would later produce (even adjusted for inflation), it still cost $2,500 in 1984 dollars — the equivalent of more than $7,500 today. This stood in stark opposition to the way the Mac project started under Jeff Raskin, with the idea of producing an everyday computer for $500 or less.
Nonetheless, Jobs remained confident. He predicted that Apple would sell 50,000 Macs in its first 100 days. Apple smashed that number by April 6. By May 3 — or day 100 — Apple had sold 72,000 Macs.
Buoyed by this early success, Apple began building up a massive inventory of Macs. The company ramped up manufacturing to a rate of 110,000 Macs per month. However, early adopter sales did not accurately reflect mainstream public demand for the new computer.
Sales slowed, and Apple did not hit the 1 million Mac mark until March 1987. Far from a repeat of the Apple III failure, the Mac nevertheless became an early setback for the company.
In the aftermath, Apple CEO John Sculley dreamed up the “Test Drive a Macintosh” campaign. The goal? Encourage average customers to give Apple’s revolutionary new computer a chance.
Before too long, Jobs was forced out of Apple. He went on to run two companies, NeXT and Pixar, that produced even more-expensive computers.
Apple silicon chip powers new era of Macs
After decades of using other companies’ processors to power Macs, Apple announced its plan to switch to its own custom chips in 2020. The resulting launch of the first Apple silicon-powered machines sparked a Mac renaissance similar in some ways to the heady success of the Mac’s first 100 days.
Apple’s proprietary M1 chip made Macs faster and more power-efficient. In fact, the performance of the M1 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini stunned the world.
The new Mac lineup also proved popular with consumers, many of whom found themselves working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Apple reported record Mac revenues of $9.1 billion for the first three months of 2021. Apple’s M2 chip, released in 2022, raised the performance bar even higher. And the M3 processor, which arrived in November 2023, boosted Mac performance even more.
Fitness tech brand Zepp Health has quietly launched a new, low-cost smartwatch: the Amazfit Bip 5 Unity. As the name suggests, it resembles the previous Bip 5 model with a few design changes and most of the same features. A few were cut from the mid-range wearable. The Bip 5 Unity is slimmer than its counterpart, sporting a stainless steel middle frame rather than one made of plastic. It weighs less too, clocking in at 25 grams (minus the strap). Yet despite the smaller size, the smartwatch has the same 1.91-inch touchscreen capable of outputting an image resolution of 320 x 380 pixels.
(Image credit: Amazfit Bip 5 Unity)
Inside is a 300 mAh battery with an average lifespan of up to 11 days before needing a charge. If you have Battery Saver Mode turned on, the device can last almost an entire month; up to 26 days. The screen is made out of 2.5D tempered glass to resist scratches and is covered in an anti-fingerprint coating. Other notable design aspects include a resistance rating of IP68 so it can survive being submerged underwater, and a speaker and microphone duo for Bluetooth calling.
Software features
When it comes to software, the Bip 5 Unity has a wide array of tools. It comes pre-installed with over 120 sports modes from rock climbing to square dancing just to name a few. The wearable can even auto-detect six different forms of cardio exercises. What this means is when you begin jogging or working out on an elliptical machine, the hardware will record your progress without needing direct input from you. Auto-detect can be finicky. Amazfit states certain actions such as driving a car can trigger it.
On the back of the watch face is a sensor that keeps tabs on your heart rate, blood oxygen, and stress levels. If the device detects any abnormalities, it’ll display a Smart Health Alert telling you to quickly address the issue. The Bip 5 Unity could, for example, warn you that your blood oxygen levels are dropping low. Another notification will let you know if it detects high-stress levels and presents an on-screen button where you can begin a breathing exercise.
Other important software features include Amazon Alexa as your AI assistant and support for over 70 downloadable apps. According to NotebookCheck, you can install the smartwatch apps through the official Zepp app on your smartphone. Unlike the older Amazfit Bip 5, this new model lacks a built-in GPS. You’ll have to connect the wearable to your phone to receive GPS data. Additionally, the watch face doesn’t curve around your wrist like the previous generation. It’s completely flat.
The Amazfit Bip 5 Unity is available in the United States for $69.99. You have your pick of either a gray, charcoal black, or pink wristband. It’s also available for purchase in the UK for £69.90 with a gray or charcoal wristband.

Samsung has shifted to “emergency mode” and is now asking executives to work six days per week.
The news, revealed in a report by The Korea Economic Daily, comes as the company battles ongoing business challenges. The company-wide policy affects executives and top managers across Samsung’s various divisions.
Recent disappointing financial results in 2023 saw Samsung record revenue of around $51 billion in last year’s final quarter, down 3.8% year-on-year and down 2.2% compared with initial analyst predictions.
Samsung enters “emergency mode”
Even worse was the company’s operating profit, which dropped a staggering 34.6% year-on-year to near $2 billion, bringing the company’s entire balance sheet for the year into the negatives – around 14.88 trillion Korean won worth of deficit, or $10.8 billion.
A company executive told the Korean publication: “Considering that performance of our major units, including Samsung Electronics Co., fell short of expectations in 2023, we are introducing the six-day work week for executives to inject a sense of crisis and make all-out efforts to overcome it.”
The policy shift is likely part of the South Korean company’s effort to tackle increased competition in the chip market, where it faces stiff rivalry from the likes of SK Hynix. Other major chipmakers, like Intel and AMD, have also emphasized AI-capable components in recent months.

Executives from the company’s various businesses, such as Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDI, and Samsung SD, will all be asked to work an extra day each week, but those below executive level will continue with five-day routines.
On the whole, Samsung has been pretty resilient, only laying off 30 workers in March 2023. Many of its rivals have laid off thousands, but things could be about to change for the company if the current outlook is as troubling as it seems.
Engineers at StorageReview decided to do something incredibly geeky for this year’s Pi day (March 14 – 3/14) – beat their own record for calculating Pi. Considering that the previous record, achieved last year, was 100 trillion digits, the challenge was no mean feat. While – spoiler alert – they smashed the record, it did take them 75 days to accomplish it.
The task was achieved using a dual processor 128-core AMD EPYC 9754 Bergamo system, equipped with 1.5TB of DRAM and nearly a petabyte of Solidigm QLC SSDs.
The team started their computation on December 14, 2023, and finished on February 27, 2024, spanning 75 days. They used the Chudnovsky (1988) algorithm to calculate Pi, and the computation required a total memory of 1.36 TiB.
New challenges
The journey to 105 trillion digits of Pi – the new record – was not without fresh challenges. The team had to deal with performance-related issues, which led them to delve into the intricacies of parallel computing and hardware interactions. They discovered a CPU hazard specific to the Zen4 architecture involving super-alignment and its effects on memory access patterns.
The engineers also encountered a critical floating-point arithmetic error within the AVX512 code path of the N63 multiply algorithm. With remote assistance from the developer, Alexander Yee, they were able to diagnose and fix the problem, resulting in the successful computation.
Summing up, StorageReview’s Jordan Ranous noted, “The run to 105 trillion digits of Pi was much more complex than we expected. Upon reflection, we should have expected to encounter new issues; after all, we’re completing a computation that had never been done before. But with the 100 trillion computation completed with a much more “duct tape and chicken wire” configuration, we thought we had it made. Ultimately, it took a collaborative effort to get this rig across the finish line.”
Was it worth it? Ranous says, “While we rejoice with our partners in this record-breaking run, we must ask, “What does this even mean?” Five more trillion digits of Pi probably won’t make a huge difference to mathematics. Still, we can draw some lines between computational workloads and the need for modern underlying hardware to support them. Fundamentally, this exercise reflects that the proper hardware makes all the difference, whether an enterprise data center cluster or a large HPC installment. For the Pi computation, we were completely restricted by storage. Faster CPUs will help accelerate the math, but the limiting factor to many new world records is the amount of local storage in the box.”

Without an efficient way to squeeze additional computing power from existing infrastructure, organizations are often forced to purchase additional hardware or delay projects. This can lead to longer wait times for results and potentially losing out to competitors. This problem is compounded by the rise of AI workloads which require a high GPU compute load.
ClearML has come up with what it thinks is the perfect solution to this problem – fractional GPU capability for open source users, making it possible to “split” a single GPU so it can run multiple AI tasks simultaneously.
This move recalls the early days of computing when mainframes could be shared among individuals and organizations, giving them the ability to utilize computing power without needing to buy additional hardware.
Fractional capabilities for Nvidia GPUs
ClearML says the new feature allows DevOps professionals and AI Infrastructure leaders to partition their Nvidia GTX, RTX, and data center-grade, MIG-enabled GPUs into smaller units to support multiple AI and HPC workloads, enabling users to switch between small R&D jobs and larger, more demanding training jobs.
The approach supports multi-tenancy, offering secure and confidential computing with hard memory limitation. ClearML says stakeholders can run isolated parallel workloads on a single shared compute resource, increasing efficiency and reducing costs.
“With our new free offering now supporting fractional capabilities for the broadest range of Nvidia GPUs than any other company, ClearML is democratizing access to compute as part of our commitment to help our community build better AI at any scale, faster,” says Moses Guttmann, CEO and Co-founder of ClearML. “We hope that organizations that might have a mixture of infrastructure are able to use ClearML and get more out of the compute and resources they already have.”
The new open source fractional GPU functionality is available for free on ClearML’s GitHub page.

Organs from genetically modified pigs could help keep patients alive while they are awaiting a human donor.Credit: Feature China/Future Publishing via Getty
In a milestone for the transplantation of animal organs into people, a 50-year-old clinically dead man in China has become the first person to receive a liver from a pig. With consent from the man’s family, researchers stitched the organ, from a genetically engineered miniature pig, to the man’s blood vessels, where it remained for ten days. It has been surgically removed today, says Dou Kefeng, one of the surgeons who led the transplant at Xijing Hospital of the Air Force Medical University in Xi’an. “Our study has just been terminated, and the colour and texture of the pig liver [transplant] are generally normal.”
The procedure was intended to test whether genetically modified pig organs could one day be used to supply hospitals for transplants. In China alone, hundreds of thousands of people experience liver failure every year, but only around 6,000 received a liver transplant in 2022. In the past few years, surgeons in the United States have transplanted pig hearts into two living people, and transplanted hearts and kidneys to several people declared dead because they lack brain function.
The Xijing surgeons say the pig liver secreted more than 30 millilitres of bile every day, a sign that it was functioning.
Researchers who specialize in transplanting animal organs into people, known as xenotransplantation, are eager to see more details about the procedure’s safety and functional benefits, and to learn from the work.
“This is a really exciting study,” says Ping Li, a transplant researcher at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis.
Important insights
The surgery marks the first time a pig liver has been transplanted into a human. However, in January, a team led by transplant surgeon Abraham Shaked at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia connected a clinically dead person to a genetically modified pig’s liver located outside their body. The organ circulated the person’s blood for three days.
It is “heart-warming” to see researchers pursuing xenotransplantation all over the world, says Muhammad Mohiuddin, the surgeon and researcher who led the pig-heart transplants in living people. “It’s an expensive process, but it has a huge amount of potential,” says Mohiuddin, who is at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore and is president of the International Xenotransplantation Association.
Luhan Yang, chief executive of Qihan Biotech in Hangzhou, China, which is developing gene-edited pigs as a source for organs, says she expects more xenotransplants in clinically dead people or — for compassionate reasons — in terminally ill people in the United States, China and Europe in the coming years.
The Chinese study will offer important insights into whether pig-liver transplants can keep people alive, even just for a few days, says David Cooper, a xenotransplant immunologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Ten days
On 10 March, the Xijing Hospital team, including Dou, Tao Kaishan and Wang Lin transplanted a pig liver weighing 700 grams into the donor, wholacked cognitive function. The surgery took roughly nine hours to perform. The donor received a daily regimen of immunosuppressive drugs, and his original liver was left in place.
The liver came from a Bama miniature pig (Sus scrofa domestica) bred by the company Clonorgan Biotechnology in Chengdu, China. It contained six genetic modifications, says Wang. These deactivated three genes for proteins found on the surface of pig cells and introduced three genes for human proteins, to prevent the donor from rejecting the pig organ.
Dou says the pig was bred in a specialized pathogen-free facility and tested negative for about a dozen pathogens, including Streptococcus suis, the type-2 strain of Mycoplasma pneumoniae and porcine cytomegalovirus. So far, he has not seen signs of an immediate form of organ rejection and the liver is producing bile. “This is encouraging,” says Cooper.
The researchers have also taken daily blood samples and liver biopsies and will assess immune response, infection risk and liver function in detail. “We’re having a pathologist evaluate if there’s acute rejection,” says Dou.
The surgery was approved by the recipient’s family and several university committees, says Wang. “It has been strictly carried out according to relevant national and international regulations.”
Temporary fix?
The researchers plan to repeat the procedure in another clinically dead person later this year — and next time they will remove the person’s existing liver.
Mohiuddin points out that although clinically dead people are a useful model for assessing the viability of xenotransplantation in living people, that usefulness is limited, because once a person’s brain ceases activity, they undergo hormonal changes. And it isn’t yet clear how long someone with no cognitive function can be maintained on a ventilator and with a donated pig organ, he says. The longest documented case was two months, which involved a pig-kidney transplant.
Shaked also questions whether surgery is necessary for pig livers to be useful to humans. Unlike the heart, which essentially functions as a pump, the liver performs many complex tasks, which makes it particularly difficult to transplant. A pig liver can carry out the liver’s detoxifying and waste-disposal role, but Shaked does not anticipate that it will be able to produce the broad array of proteins required for the human liver’s other functions.
This means that whereas heart and kidney xenotransplants have been touted as possible long-term organ replacements, liver xenotransplants are seen mainly as a short-term fix for people with liver failure. They could enable a person’s existing liver to regenerate, for example after damage caused by alcohol or drug consumption, or could buy time while waiting for a human liver donor.
As a result, Shaked and his team chose to avoid operating: they hooked up an external pig liver to the recipient using blood-carrying tubes. But Dou says his team’s goal is organ replacement. He adds that working in a person allows the researchers to collect a lot more data, including information on immunology and physiological changes.
Yang says she hopes the team will publish detailed insights about the transplantation in peer-reviewed publications, to help determine which approach is more feasible.
In the meantime, Shaked hopes to exchange notes with the Chinese team. “I’d love to hear more about what they did. It’s fantastic.”
