This budget mobile controller beats the Backbone One with one fantastic feature

[ad_1]

I’m a big proponent of the Backbone One mobile controller. It’s perfect for top native mobile titles like Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile and Genshin Impact, but is also easily one of the best Xbox Game Pass streaming accessories on the market – or so I thought. Although the controller’s original design is a few years old now, I didn’t think there were many ways in which it could be improved – until I went hands-on with the recently released GameSir X2s Type-C.

A budget mobile controller, the GameSir X2s Type-C costs 45.99 / £49 / AU$69, a whopping $44 / £50.99 / AU$110.99 less than the Backbone One, but has managed to come out on top thanks to one killer feature: its unique moveable USB-C connector. It addresses one of my biggest complaints with the Backbone One while helping to protect your phone’s charging port from damage.

8BitDo’s Ultimate Controller with charging dock drops to $56 on Amazon

[ad_1]

makes some of our favorite third-party game controllers. The gamepads work with a variety of devices (now including the ) and they’re well-built. Right now, you can pick up a bundle of an 8BitDo Ultimate Controller and charging dock for $56 on Amazon. That’s 20 percent off and close to a record low. It’s the best price we’ve seen so far this year.

8Bitdo

8Bitdo makes some of the best third-party game controllers around. This one is compatible with PC, Switch, Steam Deck and even Apple Vision Pro.

$56 at Amazon

If you’re a Prime member and you’re signed in, you’ll see that the controller is sold by 8BitDo directly. Otherwise, you’ll see the peripheral for the same price, but a third-party seller is flogging it instead.

Along with other devices, the Ultimate Controller is compatible with Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck over Bluetooth or a 2.4g adapter. To connect wirelessly to a Windows PC, you’ll need to use the adapter.

You can use a PC or mobile app to customize the sensitivity of the joysticks, triggers and vibrations, as well as to remap the buttons, add macros and create settings profiles that are saved to the controller. Other features include Hall effect sensing joysticks that will likely be more resistant to wear and drift than many other joysticks, a pair of back paddle buttons and motion controls.

While 8BitDo says that you’ll get up to 22 hours of use out of a single charge, having a dedicated dock to plunk the Ultimate Controller into is handy. In a neat touch, the controller automatically turns off or on when you dock or undock it, respectively.

Overall, the Ultimate Controller is a great, flexible gamepad (for one thing, it’s one of the few third-party controllers that can wake a Switch from sleep mode). After six months of using the peripheral, Engadget Senior Commerce Writer Jeff Dunn a “comfortable and versatile pro-style pad that should stay alive over the long haul” and “my endgame controller for both Switch and PC.”

The Razer Stream Controller is down to its all-time low price

[ad_1]

Streaming can be an art form in its own right and made all the more enjoyable with the proper tools — though they don’t always come cheap. That’s why the 26 percent discount currently running on the Razer Stream Controller is so exciting. The sale brings the all-in-one keypad down from $270 to $200 — a return to its record-low price.

Razer

Razor launched its Stream Controller back in 2022 as a competitor to Elgato’s Stream Deck — albeit at a much higher price point. To be fair, the device offers quite a lot for the cost, including 12 haptic switchblade keys, six tactile analog dials and eight programmable buttons. The haptic switchblade keys have customizable icons and, of course, have adjustable haptic feedback. The tactile analog dials control audio levels and the programmable buttons can make regular actions all the more accessible — and speedy.

The Razor Stream Controller works with Mac or PC and has integrated support for platforms like Discord, Twitch and Spotify. It’s also good for any artists looking for a new creative device, as it works with Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Illustrator and more.

Apple Vision Pro owners now have more decent controller options

[ad_1]

The Apple Vision Pro is an impressive piece of hardware, and the eye-tracking/hand gesture input combo is fantastic for navigating menus and the like. It’s not so great for gaming. There haven’t been many easy ways to connect a third-party controller for playing iPad or cloud games. This is changing, however, as accessory manufacturer 8BitDo just announced Vision Pro compatibility for a number of its controllers.

These accessories are officially supported by Apple, so they should work as soon as you make a Bluetooth connection. No muss and no fuss. All told, eight devices got the Apple seal of approval here. One such gadget is the company’s Ultimate Bluetooth Controller, which we basically called the perfect gamepad for PC.

A person wearing a headset and playing Pac-Man.A person wearing a headset and playing Pac-Man.

8BitDo

Other compatible devices include various iterations of the SN30 Pro controller, the Lite 2 and the NES-inspired N30 Pro 2. The integration isn’t just for game controllers, as 8BitDo also announced AVP compatibility for its Retro Mechanical Keyboard. Of course, the Vision Pro works out of the box with most Bluetooth keyboards.

This is pretty big news, however, as media consumption is one of the best parts of the Vision Pro experience. Video games fall squarely in that category. Just about every iPad title works on the device. If playing Cut the Rope on a giant virtual screen doesn’t do it for you, the headset also integrates with Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now for access to AAA titles.

8BitDo announced official controller support for Apple devices last year, though this was primarily for smartphones, tablets and Mac computers. The integration was thanks to new controller firmware and Apple’s recent iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3, tvOS 16.3 and macOS 13.2 updates. It looks like all of the accessories that work with iPhones and iPads also work with the Vision Pro.

Whether you’re after a spare gamepad to play local multiplayer titles with friends or need a replacement for the controller that came with your Xbox console, the Xbox Wireless Controller is an excellent choice and is currently on sale for some seriously tempting prices in both the US and UK.

By far the most exciting Xbox Wireless Controller deal right now is a $17 discount on the Dream Vapor Special Edition, which is on sale for a new lowest-ever price of just $52.99 (was $69.99) at Amazon. We particularly appreciate the eye-catching purple swirl design, which is unique to each controller due to its manufacturing process.

The bright Pulse Red controller has dropped to only $44 (was $64.99) at Amazon too, alongside the lovely Velocity Green for just $49 (was $58.99) at Amazon. These aren’t lowest-ever prices, but they’re still respectable savings on some of the best-looking Xbox Wireless Controller models around.

Over in the UK, a smaller £5 saving is available on the Dream Vapor Special Edition, which is on sale for £59.99 (was £64.99) at Currys. While we’d recommend you give that deal a miss, much more compelling savings can be found on the Electric Volt and Pulse Red colorways which are both just £39.99 (was £54.99) at Currys with free next-day delivery included. Velocity Green then costs £49.99 (was £54.99) at Currys, which is a saving of £5 with free delivery thrown in too.

Today’s best Amazon Luna controller deals

We are now firmly in the territory of mobile games providing near-console quality experiences, and in many cases, awkward touch controls just don’t pass muster anymore. That’s why having a controller for games like Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile can be so valuable, as you’re able to play much more precisely without the risk of fumbling your fingers on an input you didn’t mean to touch.

My favorite Xbox and PC controller has received a chunky discount in Amazon’s spring sales

[ad_1]

The springtime sales are coming good for gaming peripherals and deals and one of my absolute favorite Xbox and PC controllers is discounted right now. The Thrustmaster eSwap X Pro controller is down a near-record-low price of $134.99 at Amazon in the US (was $169.99) – it’s the lowest price since for a good few months and since the holidays!

• Shop all Amazon Spring Sale deals

This is a superb saving of more than 20% on a premium PC controller, that also offers new ways to play games due to its modular design. I have a soft spot for it as it was the first controller I could use on an Xbox console – the modules allowed me to change it to a symmetrical layout and thus I finally had an Xbox controller that played nice with my hands. It’s around three years since it first came out, but with a newer version also coming out recently in the form of the Thrustmaster eSwap X2, we’re likely to enjoy price cuts on the eSwap X Pro while stock remains at retailers. This is such a price cut, and marks an ideal time to adopt the pro controller and take your gaming up a notch.

Today’s best Thrustmaster controller deal

On top of the modularity, this is a premium Xbox and PC pro controller more broadly – and certainly still holds up in the face of its slightly newer brethren that;’s come out recently. The eSwap X Pro offers changeable triggers, remappable back buttons, super-satisfyingly clicky shoulder and face buttons, ultra-responsive sticks, and a robust design. It is wired, but the 9.8ft / 3m cable should be long enough for most setups.

PS5 system update that makes your controller sound better is rolling out today

[ad_1]

Sony is rolling out a new PlayStation 5 system update that makes your controller sound better, your screen sharing more immersive and your power indicator adjustable. System Update 9.00 entered beta over a month ago and is available in the public software pushed to PS5 owners on Wednesday.

PS5 system software version 24.02-09.00.00 enhances DualSense and DualSense Edge controller audio. The controller speakers are now louder, making the speakers sound clearer when broadcasting in-game sounds and voice chat. The controller’s microphone is also improved. Sony says a new “AI machine-learning model” suppresses background noises from button presses and game audio, leading to an improved voice chat experience.”

The update also adds brightness adjustments for the PS5 power indicator. You can change its levels by heading to Settings > System > Beep and Light > Brightness. You can choose from three settings: dim, medium and bright (default).

Screen still from The Last of Us Part II, featuring Share Screen interactions. The player’s audience members have arrows (circles with upward-left-facing arrows) at various points on the screen.

PS5 Share Screen pointers (Sony)

Share Screen, which lets you broadcast your gameplay straight from the console, adds pointers and emoji reactions. Your live audience can now use a pointer to show you locations on the screen. They can also send emoji reactions highlighting your gameplay triumphs and tragedies from the Share Screen. The features are toggled on by default, but hosts can turn them off from the Share Screen settings.

The 9.00 update also adds Unicode 15.1 emojis to messages. Less specifically detailed changes include performance and stability improvements for the system software, DualSense gamepads, PlayStation VR2 headset and controllers and Access controller.

If you aren’t automatically prompted to update, you can trigger the software download by heading to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, and choosing “Update System Software” under “Update Available.”
