Apple to allow alternative app stores in Europe with iOS 17.4

Alternative app store

Apple has announced that it will allow alternative app stores in Europe with the release of their iOS 17.4 software, this is to comply with new European rules which will come into place in March with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Apple has said that these new options open new possibilities for scammers, malware, fraud, and much more, of course, Apple wants to keep everything through its own app store, as it can monitor all apps through there and also earn revenue from them. You can see part of their official statement below.

The new options for processing payments and downloading apps on iOS open new avenues for malware, fraud and scams, illicit and harmful content, and other privacy and security threats. That’s why Apple is introducing protections — including Notarization for iOS apps, an authorisation for marketplace developers, and disclosures on alternative payments — to reduce risks and deliver the best, most secure experience possible for users in the EU. Even with these safeguards in place, many risks remain.

“The changes we’re announcing today comply with the Digital Markets Act’s requirements in the European Union, while helping to protect EU users from the unavoidable increased privacy and security threats this regulation brings. Our priority remains creating the best, most secure possible experience for our users in the EU and around the world,” said Phil Schiller, Apple Fellow. “Developers can now learn about the new tools and terms available for alternative app distribution and alternative payment processing, new capabilities for alternative browser engines and contactless payments, and more. Importantly, developers can choose to remain on the same business terms in place today if they prefer.”

You can find out more details about the changes coming to the Apple App Store and alternative app stores in Europe over at Apple at the link below, this will only apply to 27 European countries, it will not apply to the USA, the UK, and other countries.

Apple Vision Pro sales between 160,000 and 180,000

Apple Vision Pro

The Apple Vision Pro was made available to pre-order last Friday, the device retails for $3,500 and now we have some details on how many units of their new AR headset, Apple sold in its first weekend.

According to a recent report by respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple sold between $160,000 and $180,000 units of the new Apple Vision Pro, Apple sold put of their initial stock of the headsets in the first weekend. You can see the information on sales of the device from Ming-Chi Kyo below.

Based on pre-order inventory and shipping time, I estimated that Apple sold 160,000 to 180,000 Vision Pro units during the first pre-order weekend. As predicted, the Vision Pro sold out immediately after the pre-order opened, with shipping times for all models extending to 5–7 weeks within hours.

The instant sold-out and extended shipping times seem positive at first, but a key concern emerged: shipping times remained unchanged 48 hours after pre-orders opened. It indicates that demand may quickly taper off after the core fans and heavy users place their orders.

If these sale numbers are correct then Apple could ship around 500,000 units of the Apple Vision Pro which would be a good number of devices for such a new device, esp[ecially considering its much higher price tag of $3,500 when compared to devices like the iPhone.

Enable Bluetooth on Your Mac

Your Mac’s Bluetooth needs to be active to communicate with the Magic Mouse. Click on the Bluetooth icon in your Mac’s menu bar to check if it’s enabled. If it’s turned off, just click to turn it on, and then attempt to reconnect your Magic Mouse.

Apple Mac

Embarking on the journey of using an Apple Mac for the first time can feel like stepping into a new world, especially if you’re transitioning from a different operating system. The sleek design and unique features of macOS offer a refreshing user experience, but like any new technology, it comes with its own set of nuances and functionalities. The video below from MacVince is designed to make your transition to Mac not just easy but enjoyable, offering you a comprehensive walkthrough of its most vital features and tips.

Understanding the Mac Desktop Basics

At the heart of the Mac experience is its desktop, characterized by simplicity and elegance. You’ll notice a single menu bar at the top, dynamically changing based on the active application, a design feature that streamlines your workflow. The Apple menu, always present, is your go-to for system controls such as shutdown and restart, and accessing system settings. On the right, the menu bar displays system statuses like battery life and Wi-Fi connection. For quick adjustments, such as screen brightness or volume, the Control Center is your friend. And don’t overlook the Notification Center, subtly tucked behind the date and time, which keeps you updated with alerts and widgets.

Mastering the Use of the Dock

The Dock, customizable and convenient, is your shortcut to frequently used apps, documents, and folders. You can personalize it by adding or removing apps and manage your files on its right-hand side. An interesting feature of the Dock is the Trash can, which doubles as a disk ejector. Plus, the drag-and-drop functionality significantly enhances your interaction with the Dock, making it a versatile tool in your macOS arsenal.

Window Management Made Easy

Managing windows in macOS can seem different at first. For instance, clicking the red button closes a window but doesn’t quit the app; for that, you’ll need Command + Q or the Quit option in the menu. Minimizing (yellow button) and hiding apps (Command + H) are handy for decluttering your workspace. You’ll also learn about full-screen mode (green button) and window snapping, along with tips for leveraging third-party window management apps for an even smoother experience.

Efficient Multitasking Features

Multitasking is a breeze on a Mac. Switching between apps is as simple as Command-Tab, and toggling between windows of the same app is done with Command-Tilde. Mission Control, accessible via F3 or a three-finger swipe up, gives you a bird’s-eye view of all open windows. And if you’re working on multiple tasks, tiling windows next to each other for multitasking is incredibly efficient, thanks to full-screen and snapping options.

Mastering Finder for File Management

Finder is your gateway to managing files on a Mac, offering different views like Icon, List, Column, and Gallery for different needs. You will find file management, including copying and moving files, straightforward and intuitive. Customize Finder with the Tab bar, Path bar, and Sidebar to navigate efficiently. Tailoring Finder settings for default folder view and quick access customization can significantly enhance your productivity.

Unique Mac Features You’ll Love

Mac comes with some standout features that you will be pleased to know. Time Machine for backups ensures your data is always safe. Spotlight Search is a powerful tool for finding files, apps, and information quickly. The trackpad gestures take navigation and app management to a new level. And the essential keyboard shortcuts for actions like searching, copying, pasting, and force-quitting apps make your Mac experience both efficient and enjoyable.

As you delve into the world of Mac, you’ll discover that its design philosophy focuses on ease of use and customization. The transition to Mac is made straightforward, even for those accustomed to other operating systems. By understanding and utilizing these features, you’re not just using a computer; you’re optimizing your digital experience. How to upgrade Apple Silicon laptop soldered SSD storage

How to upgrade Apple Silicon laptop soldered SSD storage

If you’re a MacBook Air user, you might have experienced the frustration of running out of storage space. Especially for those with the M1 MacBook Air, the base storage of 128 GB for the educational laptop versions can quickly become insufficient for modern computing needs. However, there’s a solution that can significantly expand your MacBook’s storage capacity. It’s possible to upgrade your M1 MacBook Air to a whopping 2 TB by installing two 1 TB NAND chips. However MacBook SSD upgrades are not for the faint of heart, as it involves intricate work on the machine’s logic board, but for those with a technical background and a bit of courage, it’s an achievable task.

The M1 MacBook Air is designed with a single NAND chip for storage. To increase the storage, you’ll need to add a second chip. This process requires modifying the logic board, a task that demands precision and a solid understanding of electronics. You’ll be removing the existing NAND and installing additional components that are necessary for the second NAND chip to function properly.

Once you’ve prepared your logic board for the upgrade, the next step is to reball the new NAND chips. This involves attaching tiny solder balls to the contacts on the chip. It’s a delicate process that requires a steady hand and experience with soldering. After that, you’ll need to use a specialized tool, known as the JC P13 programmer, to install the correct firmware onto the NAND chips. It’s crucial to use new, unprogrammed NAND chips to ensure compatibility with your MacBook.

Upgrading Apple Silicon laptop SSDs

Even if you don’t have the skills to do the soldering yourself stiffly worth checking out the tutorial video created by dosdude1 that shows how you can successfully upgrade the SSD storage on an Apple Silicon MacBook if you so wish.

Here are some other articles you may find of interest on the subject of Apple Silicon :

Apple Silicon MacBook SSD upgrade

After the NAND chips are programmed, you’ll have to reinstall macOS to ensure that your MacBook Air recognizes the new 2 TB of storage. However, it’s worth noting that you might encounter issues with read/write speeds after the upgrade. These issues can often be resolved by zeroing out the disk, which can help optimize the system’s use of the new space.

This upgrade process is intricate and requires a high level of technical skill. It’s also important to note that this guide is specific to certain MacBook models, particularly the M1 and M2 MacBook Air models that support dual NAND chips. Attempting this upgrade on unsupported models, such as the M1 Pro, Max, Ultra, and some M2 and M3 models, could result in hardware damage. It’s essential to proceed with caution and consider seeking professional assistance if you’re not confident in your technical abilities.

The idea of upgrading your MacBook Air’s storage might seem daunting, but for those with the necessary skills, it’s a project that can breathe new life into your machine. With an expanded storage capacity, you’ll be able to handle more data-intensive tasks, store more files, and enjoy a more versatile computing experience. Just remember to approach the task with care, and don’t hesitate to seek help if needed. This upgrade could be the key to unlocking the full potential of your MacBook Air, allowing you to work more efficiently and effectively.

Apple App Store in the USA now allows external purchase links

Apple App Store

Apple was recently denied an appeal in the Apple vs Epic trial, and now Apple is making some changes to the App Store in the UJSA to comply with the original ruling from 2021, Apple will now allow alternative purchase links in the app store.

Previously any sign-ups for anything or purchases had to be through Apple and their app store, developers only had the option to use this as a payment method, now Apple is also allows external links as payment methods, more details below.

In addition to using Apple’s convenient, safe, and secure in-app purchase system, apps on the App Store in the United States that offer in-app purchases can also use the StoreKit External Purchase Link Entitlement (US) to include a link to the developer’s website that informs users of other ways to purchase digital goods or services. To use the entitlement, you’ll need to submit a request, enable the entitlement in Xcode, and use the required StoreKit APIs. Apple will review your app to ensure it complies with the terms and conditions of the entitlement, as well as the App Store Review Guidelines and the Apple Developer Program License Agreement.

You can find out more details about the changes coming to the Apple App Store and the payment options that will be available over at Apple’s developer website at the link below, Apple will apparently still charge developers a commission, although exactly how this will be done is not known as yet.
