The real total eclipse was better than the pics I shot with my iPhone 15 Pro Max and DSLR, and believe me I tried

[ad_1]

If you’ve never seen a total eclipse in person, whatever you’ve seen and what you imagine don’t come close. The best photos, the most stunning video, they won’t match the silent, dazzling fury of the real thing. Your phone or monitor won’t capture the infinite diamond brilliance of the Sun’s corona twinkling around the black Moon. I set out to shoot the total eclipse with my three best camera phones and my Nikon DSLR, but I am thankful that I decided to enjoy the eclipse in the scant three minutes I was under its totality.

Before I talk tech, I’ll do my best to describe the total solar eclipse if you’ve never seen one in person. April 8 was my first total eclipse, and before that day I thought it would be my last. Now I’m sure that I’ll find another opportunity. I’ve already spotted an upcoming eclipse over Tunis, Tunisia, and Luxor, Egypt in 2027. That could be an incredible trip.

Quordle today – hints and answers for Sunday, April 14 (game #811)

[ad_1]

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can’t blindly throw letters at it and expect to win – you’ll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That’s the case in Wordle too, of course, but it’s even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won’t want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options – you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe – but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you’re faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options – for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH – you’ll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It’s risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it’s the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure – you simply don’t have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

The Google Pixel 8a leaks twice, hinting at its design, and four color options

[ad_1]

Nothing is official yet, but if we had to make an educated guess, we’d say the Google Pixel 8a is going to be unveiled on the first day of Google I/O 2024, which is May 14. Now two new leaks have given us more of an idea about what to expect from the handset.

To begin with we’ve got leaked renders of the Pixel 8a courtesy of Android Headlines. There are four colors on show here, apparently called Mint, Porcelain, Obsidian, and Bay (or light green, pale gray, dark gray, and light blue, as they’re otherwise known).

This budget mobile controller beats the Backbone One with one fantastic feature

[ad_1]

I’m a big proponent of the Backbone One mobile controller. It’s perfect for top native mobile titles like Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile and Genshin Impact, but is also easily one of the best Xbox Game Pass streaming accessories on the market – or so I thought. Although the controller’s original design is a few years old now, I didn’t think there were many ways in which it could be improved – until I went hands-on with the recently released GameSir X2s Type-C.

A budget mobile controller, the GameSir X2s Type-C costs 45.99 / £49 / AU$69, a whopping $44 / £50.99 / AU$110.99 less than the Backbone One, but has managed to come out on top thanks to one killer feature: its unique moveable USB-C connector. It addresses one of my biggest complaints with the Backbone One while helping to protect your phone’s charging port from damage.

My haunted Roomba S9+ kept me up all night and iRobot says there’s no way to fix it

[ad_1]

I’m going to tell you that my Roomba S9 Plus is haunted, but don’t dwell on the haunting. The buttons are stuck, which may or may not be related. I have been living with the haunted Roomba and its broken buttons since last year, when it was still under warranty, but it only recently started waking me up in the middle of the night. When I finally contacted iRobot for support, they told me that my Roomba was dead (undead?!), and it would be impossible for them to fix it.

I need to live with the haunted Roomba or destroy it.

Again, let’s not dwell on the haunting part. There are many things you can replace on a Roomba. Of course, you can replace the filters. You can replace all of the cleaning elements, like the brushes and sweepers.

Refreshed Mercedes-Benz EQS gets massive 55-inch Hyperscreen and an equally monstrous 511-mile range

[ad_1]

Mercedes-Benz has revealed an upgraded version of its luxury electric sedan, with more tech, an increased range and the reintroduction of the upright bonnet star all featuring in the upcoming EQS.

The model, which has been under scrutiny for its shocking residual values, has been given the once-over to ensure it remains competitive, with the 55-inch MBUX Hyperscreen now coming as standard across the range.

This gargantuan infotainment system sees three displays merge seamless across the dash, giving the interior the look and feel of a NASA control room. On the outside, there’s a darker grille cover and reworked headlights, as well as the upright star bonnet badge, which was famous for going missing on classic Mercedes vehicles of the 70s and 80s.

Updated Mercedes-Benz EQS

Perhaps more important to potential owners is the fact that new batteries have been fitted, which are almost 10kWh up on the previous 108.4kWh packs, delivering an additional 51-miles of range. Couple this with some aerodynamic tweaks to the bodywork and Merc reckons you can achieve more than 500 miles before it requires plugging in. That’s almost 100 miles more than the top spec Tesla Model S.

Is this the best time ever for iPhone deals at Verizon? Multiple devices are free without the need for an annoying trade

[ad_1]

If you’ve been eying up an iPhone at Verizon, right now is a great time to consider picking up a deal. As well as several large trade-in rebates from the carrier, there are also an increasing number of promotions not tied to that usual criteria.

For example, right now, you don’t need a trade-in to get the standard iPhone 15 for free alongside a new line on a Verizon Unlimited Ultimate plan. If you pick one up on this admittedly pricey plan you’ll be entitled to a full $829 saving, which will cover the entire cost of the device over 36 months.

Colin Farrell’s gritty detective series ‘Sugar’ becomes immediate hit

[ad_1]

Colin Farrell’s star power helped quickly propel Sugar to popularity. His Apple TV+ series about a private detective searching for the missing granddaughter of a Hollywood magnate premiered last week and it’s already near the tops of the streaming ratings charts.

And Palm Royale, an Apple TV+ comedy series, also keeps attracting plenty of viewers.

Colin Farrell helps make Sugar popular

Star power can make a TV series. People tune in to watch The Morning Show for Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. They watch Hijack because it stars Idris Elba. Of course, to be successful, a series or film needs more than big names. But a celebrity’s name can certainly get a show off on the right foot. That’s likely the case with Colin Farrell and Sugar.

The series ranks all the way up at No. 3 on Reelgood’s list of Top 10 TV shows on streaming during the week ending April 10. And it’s at No. 7 on JustWatch‘s list of top streaming shows for the week ending April 7. And note that it premiered April 5, in the middle of both those time spans, so it could do even better next week.

Both Sugar and Palm Royale did well with audiences.

Estimates from companies like JustWatch and Reelgood are necessary because streaming services rarely reveal how many people watch their offerings.

There’s more the Apple TV+ detective series than name recognition. The official description says:

Sugar is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story. Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.”

Colin Farrell has had a long career, with roles in independent films and blockbusters, including The Batman. He received two Golden Globes plus a nomination for an Oscar for best man in The Banshees of Inisherin.

The series also stars Kirby (The Sandman), Amy Ryan (The Wire), James Cromwell (Succession), Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), Dennis Boutsikaris (Better Call Saul), Nate Corddry (Mindhunter), Sydney Chandler (Don’t Worry Darling) and Alex Hernandez (Invasion).

Watch on Apple TV

Three episodes of Sugar are available now. New episodes will be added on successive Fridays.

And Palm Royale holds onto its audience

Emmy and Oscar nominee Kristen Wiig created plenty of funny characters on Saturday Night Live and in movies like Bridesmaids. Now she stars in Palm Royale, which has continued to bring in viewers since it launched on Apple TV+ in March.

The series ranks No. 9 on both the Reelgood and JustWatch lists of most popular TV shows last week.

Apple says of the comedy:

Palm Royale is a true underdog story that follows Maxine Simmons (Wiig) as she endeavors to break into Palm Beach high society. As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, Palm Royale asks the same question that still baffles us today: “How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?” Set during the powder keg year of 1969, Palm Royale is a testament to every outsider fighting for their chance to truly belong.”

It has some amazing acting talent, with the cast including Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Ricky Martin, Mindy Cohn, Bruce Dern and the iconic Carol Burnett.

Watch on Apple TV

The season finale premiered this week so full six-episode season is available to watch now on Apple TV+.

Watch threes hits and more on Apple TV+

Watching Sugar and Palm Royale plus many other series or films comes with a subscription to Apple TV+. The service is $9.99 per month with a seven-day free trial. You can also get it via any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle.

And Apple’s streaming video service also includes much more, of course. There’s a library of drama, comedies, sci-fi, musicals, children’s shows, nature documentaries, etc.
