No, ‘Leave the World Behind’ and ‘Civil War’ Aren’t Happening Before Your Eyes

[ad_1]

Several people are typing, and they’re all saying Netflix’s Leave the World Behind is wildly prescient. The movie, directed by Sam Esmail, opens on a world where communication has been knocked out following a cyberattack. And earlier this week, when nearly all of Meta’s platforms—Facebook, Instagram, Threads—went down, people took to (other) social media platforms to post and hand-wring about the apocalypse.

Most of the posts, per usual, were jokes: wry observations to help soothe the agita that comes with being alive when everything feels unstable. “Another dry run for Leave the World Behind,” wrote one X user. “I fear we are moving close to a Leave the World Behind scenario,” wrote another. “These tech glitches are increasingly [sic] with regularity.”

But there was also a more conspiratorial undercurrent. For those who don’t know, Leave the World Behind was produced by Barack and Michelle Obama through their company Higher Ground Productions. Ever since the movie’s release, a conspiracy theory has persisted online that the film is somehow a warning about the widespread disorder to come.

This same thread emerged late last month when an AT&T network outage wreaked havoc on US cellular networks. “The predictive programming of the Obama’s [sic] movie, Leave the World Behind, is becoming a little too real right now,” one user wrote on X. “I wouldn’t put it past our own federal government to institute a terrorist or cyber attack, just to blame it on foreign countries like China and Russia.”

Odds are that nothing of the sort happened. Leave the World Behind is based on a 2020 book by Rumaan Alam and, according to the film’s director Sam Esmail, the former US president came on as a production partner only after the script was pretty much done. “I would just say [the conspiracy theorists] are pretty wrong in terms of his signaling,” he told Collider. “It had nothing to do with that.”

Not that facts have ever gotten in the way of an online conspiracy before. Case in point, this week’s big trailer drop: Civil War. When the first trailer for Alex Garland’s next film dropped in December, online right-wing pundits speculated that it was also predictive programming, something meant to prepare the populace for events already planned by those in power. When the new trailer dropped this week, people on Reddit and elsewhere seemed to be fretting that the film will become, as The Hollywood Reporter put it, “MAGA fantasy fuel.”

Ultimately, reactions like these to Leave the World Behind and Civil War merely serve as proof that they’re effective as works of fiction. They’re not part of some psyop to placate the public—they’re reactions to a political era that is fraught at best. Comfort is not a prerequisite for good filmmaking; movies are supposed to be unsettling sometimes. Concerns about a movie being too real are just signs that the filmmakers have tapped in to the collective psyche. Rather than think that Esmail or Garland—or Obama, for that matter—are trying to send some warning, perhaps consider the circumstances for why you’re worried that they might.

This Senator Wants to Know What Meta and TikTok Are Doing About Parent-Run Girl Influencer Accounts

[ad_1]

In January, the CEOs of X, TikTok, Meta, Snap, and Discord testified in front of a congressional committee about child exploitation on their platforms. “Mr. Zuckerberg, you and the companies before us, I know you don’t mean it to be so, but you have blood on your hands,” Senator Lindsey Graham said at the time.

Despite confrontational questioning from Graham and others about how many underage users were on their platforms, and what safeguards protected them, Zuckerberg and other executives weren’t questioned about the concerning practices of some parents who manage social media accounts on behalf of their young children. A New York Times investigation the month after the hearing found that some parents, mostly of girls, were amassing tens of thousands of followers for their children by posting suggestive images that can attract predators.

Now, Democratic Senator Maggie Hassan is demanding that tech companies account for the untold thousands of accounts that place girls as risk of exploitation on their platforms, through the actions of adult account-holders.

“These corporations must answer for how they are allowing young women and girls to be exploited on their platforms and what steps they will take in response,” Senator Hassan, who represents New Hampshire, told WIRED. “Young women should be able to express themselves online in safe environments that do not facilitate the monetization of potentially exploitative content.”

The Times investigation found that parents can readily bypass the age restrictions of social platforms that bar children under 13 from having accounts. Some parents use the accounts they set up for their children to essentially monetize their daughters by putting them to work as influencers, garnering discounts and sponsorship deals or pulling in advertising revenue.

More sinisterly, some of these accounts brought in money from people seeking sexual or suggestive material about young girls, some of whom were convicted sex offenders. Some of these followers are willing to pay for extra photos beyond those shared on a girl’s social media account, or for private chats or used clothing. Times reporters examined some 5,000 accounts of young girls run by their parents.

While the Times found that some of the parents also operated TikTok accounts, the phenomenon was most prevalent on Meta’s Instagram. (X was not mentioned in the Times investigation, and the company claims that its underage user base constitutes less than 1 percent of its usership. WIRED has previously reported that the platform may not have the age verification systems needed to accurately make such a claim.)

“After the disturbing revelations about predators interacting with the posts of minors and even buying their worn clothing, it continues to be clear that social media companies are failing to keep our children safe,” says Senator Hassan.

Meta, TikTok, and X did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In a statement to the Times about its earlier reporting, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said that the company prevents “accounts exhibiting potentially suspicious behavior from using our monetization tools, and we plan to limit such accounts from accessing subscription content,” but that parents were ultimately responsible for the accounts.

In the letters sent to TikTok, X, and Meta, Hassan is asking companies to disclose whether they were aware of parents circumventing their age requirements, whether accounts of young girls are monetized—or have ads placed on them—by the platforms, and what active measures the companies have in place to detect these kinds of accounts.

The platforms have until April 8 to offer their responses.

Stop Misunderstanding the Gender Health Gap

[ad_1]

Well, if weight here is being used as a proxy for sex or gender, a larger woman would need the higher dose; a smaller man a lower dose. So why would you just not use weight as the measure for what dose a person should get? That would be a much more effective way of deciding. But because we collect data along certain lines and not others, then guidelines get written along certain lines and not others.

To give another example, sometimes women’s pain is not fully appreciated when they come forward. Women are statistically more likely to go to a doctor when in pain compared to a man. But then common myths and assumptions start to emerge: “It’s not that serious.” “She’s being hysterical.”

So there are lots of things to pick apart here. It’s the picking apart that we often don’t bother with. We just see a difference, and then that gets ascribed to something without us really knowing what the root cause is.

So how can we get better at picking apart sex differences and sexism to reduce the gender health gap?

For me, it’s about taking medicine to the next level of investigation, which is at the level of the social determinants of health. Many of the things that kill most of us have a huge social or environmental component. Things like diet, stress, the way that we are treated in society.

It’s only relatively recently that research started to be done into the impact of sexism and racism on health, and the impact of other social factors. The job that you do, your status as a married person or not, these can also have health outcomes.

So there’s all these little pieces where research is needed, and it’s an ongoing project. It’s not as though you’ll only do a study once into the effects of being married or being a stay-at-home wife on your health. Because those social factors are always changing.

Sex and gender is an aspect of this social story. But it’s important to understand where it can be appropriately invoked. Sometimes gender is relevant, sometimes it’s not. Sometimes sex matters, sometimes it doesn’t.

What’s standing in the way of things getting better?

Well, research funding agencies are much more interested in looking inside our bodies for explanations for why things are as they are. The outside world is much more difficult to study, because social circumstances are always changing. They can be very different between households, even within households. It’s much harder to collect data on social circumstances.

But we’re at the stage where we can learn so much from people’s mobile phones tracking their activity. Data is being collected on what people are eating, their movements, how active they are. Eventually we’ll be able to build personalized pictures of people, and stop generalizing about people in groups and assuming that they’re typical of that group, and then understand them as a complex individual.

Who is making progress on understanding and closing the gender health gap?

Sarah Richardson’s team at Harvard University—she runs the GenderSci Lab—has done incredible work breaking down the causes of gender health disparities. They’re getting medical researchers to think very carefully about the context of the conditions that they’re investigating.

The team did brilliant work during the pandemic. At the beginning there were all these very wild claims about gender differences with the virus—for instance, that women were protected because on average they have a stronger immune system. They showed that if you looked at the data this didn’t really hold up. They helped dispel this very pseudoscientific assumption that the virus was hitting all populations uniformly, and helped end the neglect of demographic patterns as a factor in Covid, the kind of jobs that people were doing, who were frontline workers, and so on.

This work around sex contextualism, as Richardson calls it, is a really compelling model for how to think about sex and gender in research.

Florida Middle Schoolers Arrested for Allegedly Creating Deepfake Nudes of Classmates

[ad_1]

Two teenage boys from Miami, Florida, were arrested in December for allegedly creating and sharing AI-generated nude images of male and female classmates without consent, according to police reports obtained by WIRED via public record request.

The arrest reports say the boys, aged 13 and 14, created the images of the students who were “between the ages of 12 and 13.”

The Florida case appears to be the first arrests and criminal charges as a result of alleged sharing of AI-generated nude images to come to light. The boys were charged with third-degree felonies—the same level of crimes as grand theft auto or false imprisonment—under a state law passed in 2022 which makes it a felony to share “any altered sexual depiction” of a person without their consent.

The parent of one of the boys arrested did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication. The parent of the other boy said that he had “no comment.” The detective assigned to the case, and the state attorney handling the case, did not respond for comment in time for publication.

As AI image-making tools have become more widely available, there have been several high-profile incidents in which minors allegedly created AI-generated nude images of classmates and shared them without consent. No arrests have been disclosed in the publicly reported cases—at Issaquah High School in Washington, Westfield High School in New Jersey, and Beverly Vista Middle School in California—even though police reports were filed. At Issaquah High School, police opted not to press charges.

The first media reports of the Florida case appeared in December, saying that the two boys were suspended from Pinecrest Cove Academy in Miami for 10 days after school administrators learned of allegations that they created and shared fake nude images without consent. After parents of the victims learned about the incident, several began publicly urging the school to expel the boys.

Nadia Khan-Roberts, the mother of one of the victims, told NBC Miami in December that for all of the families whose children were victimized the incident was traumatizing. “Our daughters do not feel comfortable walking the same hallways with these boys,” she said. “It makes me feel violated, I feel taken advantage [of] and I feel used,” one victim, who asked to remain anonymous, told the TV station.

WIRED obtained arrest records this week that say the incident was reported to police on December 6, 2023, and that the two boys were arrested on December 22. The records accuse the pair of using “an artificial intelligence application” to make the fake explicit images. The name of the app was not specified, and the reports claim the boys shared the pictures between each other.

“The incident was reported to a school administrator,” the reports say, without specifying who reported it or how that person found out about the images. After the school administrator “obtained copies of the altered images,” the administrator interviewed the victims depicted in them, the reports say, who said that they did not consent to the images being created.

‘1899’ Fans Still Want Answers

[ad_1]

1899, a science fiction series from Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, creators of the hit TV show Dark, premiered on Netflix in November 2022. TV producer Ruairi Carroll enjoyed the show’s mysterious characters and storyline.

“Whatever way Netflix algorithms work, it was being pushed on my screen all the time,” Carroll says in Episode 562 of the Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy podcast. “And I was seeing a lot of trailers on YouTube, because I follow the Netflix channel on YouTube. And I kind of burned through it to begin with, and had a great time, I’ve got to say.”

Despite the fanfare, 1899 was quickly canceled, concluding the series on a painful cliffhanger that left the show’s many mysteries completely unresolved. Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy host David Barr Kirtley was disappointed that Netflix would end the show in such a frustrating way. “It’s been more than a year since the show came out, and I’m still just constantly seeing people grousing on social media like, ‘How could Netflix fund this stupid show or this stupid show? Why don’t they give us more 1899? That’s what we really want,’” he says.

Fantasy author Erin Lindsey enjoyed 1899, but understands why the show was canceled, given the many indications that the story was spinning out of control. “There was some serious storytelling entropy going on,” she says. “I think it was going pretty well for the first few episodes, and then each episode got exponentially weirder after that, to the point that I had lost patience by the end.”

So is there any hope that 1899 fans will ever find out what it all means? TV writer Andrea Kail hopes the answers will be forthcoming in one form or another. “Here’s my proposal for Netflix, or at least the producers,” she says. “Could you please just tell me what happened? Explain it to me. I don’t care, write it out. I just want to know. I just want to know what happens next.”

Listen to the complete interview with Ruairi Carroll, Erin Lindsey, and Andrea Kail in Episode 562 of Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy (above). And check out some highlights from the discussion below.

Andrea Kail on mysteries:

Does it all have to make sense? I’ve been having this conversation with my friend lately. She doesn’t like mysteries. She wants everything explained to her as you go, and I’m just like, “Well, let it go in the moment. Eventually maybe you’ll get an explanation, and sometimes not getting an explanation is still satisfactory.” That’s probably just me as a reader/viewer. It doesn’t bother me … I like not having all the questions answered. I am very much a “let it wash over me” person, especially if my first impression, when I’m doing that, is that it’s great.

Ruairi Carroll on Mystery Box shows:

I don’t mind the Mystery Box thing. Well, I can take it to a certain extent. I kind of fell out of Lost. I enjoyed The Leftovers from a couple of years ago, and Dark. But then sometimes I do run out of road with it. And I’ll be honest with you, there are days where I was quite happy to skip over something that was a Mystery Box and just put on Reacher on Amazon, and just watch a big man hit people … Just go with it, that’s the only thing I can say about these Mystery Box things. Just go with it. You’ll either bang your head off the wall for the rest of the night thinking about it, or you’ll be like, “OK, I’m firing up Jack Reacher.”

David Barr Kirtley on Dark vs. 1899:

What happened to me with Dark is that at the end of Season 1, I was like, “There’s no way they can possibly wrap this up. There’s no way this all makes sense.” And then at the end of Season 2, I was like, “OK, they did a surprisingly good job—way better than I was expecting—of making this all make sense, so I’m hopeful that in Season 3 everything will actually make sense.” And then with Season 3, I was like, “Eh, I still have a list of like a hundred things that they never answered that were kind of important.” So if this had followed the same pattern, I’m sure a lot of things would have been answered in a satisfactory way, but I’m still left with the overwhelming impression that at the end of Season 3 there would have been a list of a hundred things that nobody can answer.”

Erin Lindsey on Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese:

I think if anyone’s going to pull off [a Mystery Box show], it could well be these guys. We’ve picked it apart. That’s our job, a little bit, on this show, but this was an enjoyable show. It was flawed, in my opinion, but it was enjoyable, and I think that even if I preferred Dark to this, I continue to be impressed by the attention to detail and just the pure ambition of what these guys are putting out, and they could well nail it one day. I would recommend this show as enjoyable if flawed, and I will watch the next thing they put out, and the next thing after that, because I have a feeling that one of these days they’re going to hit it out of the park.

Smartphone and Tablet Deals

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series

Photograph: Julian Chokkattu

This is the first and best price drop we’ve seen for these brand-new phones so far. The flagship Samsung Galaxy S24 lineup (8/10, WIRED Recommends) was just released in January. The phones have great performance, day-long (if not more) battery life, and stunning displays. There are fun, smart software features, and while we think the design is a bit uninspired, the phones are available in neat colors. This basic model will serve most people just fine. Make sure to protect your new purchase with one of these great S24 cases.

If you prefer more real estate, the Galaxy S24+ has a larger 6.7-inch display compared to the baseline S24 model’s 6.2-inch screen. It also has a bigger battery, more RAM, and a higher starting storage capacity than its smaller sibling. Read more about their differences and similarities in our buying guide. We’ve also tested many Galaxy S24 cases—these are our favorites.

We still think the S24 Ultra is quite overpriced, but if you’re determined to snag it, this deal is the best we have tracked. It’s the biggest phone in the lineup and is made of titanium rather than aluminum. It also has a built-in S Pen stylus and more versatile cameras compared to the S24 or S24+. But if you don’t reach for a stylus very often, you’ll probably be fine with a different, less expensive model. Our buying guide has plenty of detailed advice. Don’t forget a phone case!

Galaxy Z Fold5

Photograph: Samsung

This deal is a match of one we saw last fall. The phone was cheaper at Amazon earlier in the week, but it is still slightly discounted there. The Z Fold5 (7/10, WIRED Recommends) is a sleek smartphone that opens up like a book. The displays are bright and immersive, the cameras are great, and it has one of the best update policies you can get on an Android. Once your new purchase arrives, be sure to check our Best Apps for Folding Phones guide.

Last fall, we saw the Galaxy Tab 9 drop down to this same price. Even outside of Amazon’s lower cost, the $800 deal at other retailers is still decent. We think the Galaxy Tab S9 Series (7/10, WIRED Review) offers some of the best Android tablets around, but they’re usually too expensive. The hardware is excellent, from the screens to the included S Pen stylus, and Samsung’s security updates and Android OS upgrades will keep the gadget up-to-date for years.

Galaxy Tab S9 series

Photograph: Samsung

The S9+ is a solid middle-of-the-road option for anyone who wants to use a tablet for both work and play. The 12.4-inch AMOLED screen has enough real estate for most tasks, and this model of the S9 series comes with 12 gigabytes of RAM compared to the basic S9’s 8 gigs.

Smartwatch and Headphone Deals

Photograph: Julian Chokkattu

The Samsung Galaxy Buds2 (9/10, WIRED Recommends) are some of the best headphones for Samsung users. They’re comfortable and have active noise canceling, plus five hours of battery life per charge. The IPX2 water resistance means you can wear them during workouts. And the colors are cute!

This price is even better than what we saw on Cyber Monday in 2023. We reviewed the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic (7/10, WIRED Recommends), which has a mechanical rotating bezel you can use to interact with the operating system; the standard Watch 6 doesn’t have the bezel feature. Still, this Wear OS 4 smartwatch matches the Apple Watch in its health and fitness features, plus it’s round! It only works with Android phones, and the electrocardiogram and irregular heart rate notifications only work when the watch is paired with a Samsung phone. Read more about it in our Best Smartwatches guide.

Gaming, Laptop, and TV Deals

Samsung The Frame TV

Photograph: Walmart

We’ve seen this TV drop down to $998 during Prime Day before. Sometimes TVs can be a bit of an eyesore, but The Frame from Samsung looks like a piece of art when not in use. It’ll flip through hundreds of paintings and photographs, and the transparent cable is unobtrusive too. Our list of the best TVs has additional recommendations.

The QN800C (8/10, WIRED Recommends) is a fantastic 8K TV overall, notwithstanding its eye-popping price tag. There’s still not a ton of content available for 8K TVs, outside of YouTube videos. But if you wanna be future-proof and you’ve got cash to burn, this might be a purchase worth making.

This price matches what we saw during Cyber Monday last year. This little projector offers up to 100 inches of screen real estate, and it also features a built-in smart interface and gaming hub. It’s compatible with specific USB-C power banks for extra portability.

Chromebooks aren’t the most powerful machines, but they’re fine for things like doing homework or web browsing. And it’s important to underline that this price is fantastic compared to the usual cost. The Galaxy Chromebook 2 (7/10, WIRED Review) has great battery life, a fantastic screen, and a fun red shell. The 2-in-1 design lets you convert the laptop into a tablet. Our list of the Best Chromebooks has additional recommendations.

This memory card falls to $25 on a semiregular basis, but we’ve not seen it drop any lower. It’ll add plenty of storage to your Nintendo Switch, smartphone, or tablet. Samsung storage cards are fast, sturdy, and reliable. This one is backed by a 10-year warranty.

Sam Altman Back on OpenAI’s Board After He Is Cleared by Investigation

[ad_1]

In its investigation, which involved reviewing more than 30,000 documents and interviewing dozens of people, WilmerHale found that the four board members had accurately portrayed their reasoning when they fired Altman citing his lack of candor with the board. The report found that they had not expected firing Altman “would destabilize the company,” according to OpenAI’s blog post on Friday. OpenAI released only a summary of the findings, not a complete report.

“WilmerHale also found that the prior board’s decision did not arise out of concerns regarding product safety or security, the pace of development, OpenAI’s finances, or its statements to investors, customers, or business partners,” OpenAI’s summary says. “Instead, it was a consequence of a breakdown in the relationship and loss of trust between the prior board and Altman.”

OpenAI said the investigation found the board acted on its concerns with an “abridged timeframe, without advance notice to key stakeholders, and without a full inquiry or an opportunity for Altman to address” them.

New Oversight

Desmond-Hellmann served on Facebook’s board from 2013 through 2019, stepping down to focus on her role at the Gates Foundation. Her connection to Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates could help the company that has pledged $13 billion to OpenAI steer the partnership. After Altman’s ejection last year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella complained of being surprised by the move. Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Seligman brings to OpenAI’s board experience operating within the media and entertainment industries, which could prove beneficial as OpenAI battles numerous lawsuits from content publishers alleging that it has ripped off their content to develop systems such as ChatGPT.

Simo’s previous work at Facebook included overseeing its video projects and managing the company’s primary mobile app for a couple of years. She also sits on the board of Shopify, one of the leading providers of ecommerce software.

Bret Taylor, who is chair of OpenAI’s board and recently launched his own generative AI company, said during the press call on Friday that additional governance changes made alongside the expansion of the board to seven members would help better manage the nonprofit. He said they included new corporate governance guidelines, a new and enhanced conflict of interest policy, and a whistleblower hotline. He added that the board would continue to expand and that it had created some new committees, including one named Mission & Strategy.

OpenAI’s nonprofit arm had for years noted in regulatory filings that its governance documents and conflict rules were open to public inspection, but said that policy had changed when WIRED asked to see the documents in the wake of last year’s drama. That policy change was cited by Elon Musk, who helped found OpenAI but is no longer involved with it, when he sued the ChatGPT maker last week for allegedly breaching its mission.

On Friday, OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether it would be publishing the new and updated policies. Taylor told reporters when asked for more details on the updates, “I’m not an expert in this place. A lot of our policies are public documents. I’m not sure what is and what isn’t? So I apologize, I don’t have a great answer for you right now.”

Additional reporting by Steven Levy.

Updated March 6, 2024, 7:20 pm EST: This article was updated with additional material from OpenAI’s news briefing.

Updated March 6, 2024, 6:40 pm EST: This article was updated with new details about OpenAI’s new board members and the company’s announcements today.

With an 11th generation Intel Core processor, i7, 6GB GDDR RAM and a very powerful modern GPU, it has enough core power to play visually stunning games like Red Dead Redemption 2 .

The 34-inch ultrawide IPS screen with 5120 x 2160 resolution covers 98% of the DCI-P3 color space, which means it can display your movies and games in full and accurate colors. For communication, HP has included a 16-megapixel webcam that magnetically attaches anywhere on the display's four edges, allowing it to fit into any configuration without leaving the screen.

And unlike most all-in-ones, the Envy 34 offers upgrade options, including two additional RAM slots for adding storage and an M.2 slot for additional storage. There's a solid selection of ports, including USB Type-A and Type-C ports. It's a really capable system that's great for office work and content creation, as well as an excellent gaming rig

  • Older CPUs and GPUs

The Microsoft Surface Studio 2 is one of the older models we tested and is far from perfect, but it would be the perfect tool for visual artists looking for an all-in-one. . Don't get me wrong, this is a computer for professionals – base models start at $3,500. But in return you get a unique computer, designed specifically for drawing and editing. Surface Studio 2 features a highly portable display that can stand upright as a monitor or fold up to serve as a digital drawing board. According to reviewers, the 28-inch screen is individually calibrated to offer 99% sRGB coverage and 96.9-98% DCI-P3 color gamut. The display is specifically designed for use with the Microsoft Surface Pen that comes with the computer and the Surface Dial, an accessory that lets you quickly adjust settings like brush size and hardness without interrupting your work.

After four years, the Surface Studio 2's Intel Core i7-7820HQ and Nvidia 10-series GPUs are pretty dated, especially considering the astonishing price. However, no other desktop computer can do what it can. This may be enough to attract some photo editors and visual artists.

Best for Business: Dell Inspiron 27 7000 All-in-One

  • The stand does not fit all tables very well

Dell's Inspiron 27 7000 Windows All-in-One strikes a good balance between performance and price. It offers Wi-Fi 6 (very fast if your router also has this feature), plenty of RAM, and a discrete but weak GPU. It has a large list of ports to connect to, including HDMI in and out, meaning you can use it as a monitor for a game console or connect it to a second monitor. The garden chair-style base is a bit odd: it takes up more space than it should, which can make it difficult to place on some small tables. However, it costs just under $1,500, making it slightly more expensive than the base iMac. For daily browsing and office use, Dell's offering should last a long time.

  • 1080p on a 27-inch screen

With the exception of Apple's iMac, every system on our list has an Intel processor. Because of the diversity, we wanted to make sure there was at least one AMD option on the table. The 27-inch HP Pavilion packs a powerful Ryzen 7 5700U processor with 32GB of RAM, making it ideal for all kinds of demanding creative work. The system compares well to the other AiOs on this list, with 2TB of hard drive storage, a 1920×1080 touchscreen, and a frame-mounted 1080p front-facing camera for any zoom meeting that might be email. There are other models that offer a little more flexibility in price and features, with a 512GB SSD instead of 1TB and 16GB of RAM instead of 32GB.

Best budget: HP Chromebase AIO22

Why it made the cut: The HP Chromebase AIO22 costs a lot less for an all-in-one, making it a solid choice if you need the essentials.

characteristics

  • Processor: Intel Pentium Gold 6405U
  • GPU: Intel UHD Graphics, integrated
  • Memory: 4GB
  • Display: 1920 x 1080 IPS touch screen
  • Memory: 64 GB

to use

  • for free
  • Chrome OS keeps things simple
  • Screen rotates for video chat

inappropriate

  • Very energy efficient car

The Chromebase is the definition of a budget machine with a weak Intel processor and just 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage Running Chrome OS means this machine isn't well-suited for gaming or heavy office work. What makes it great is general web browsing. This could be a large kitchen computer or something you can put in front of your kids without worrying too much about breaking them. Chrome OS means that it's getting harder to get infected with the standard viruses and adware that Windows PCs might come across, and harder for sneaky clickers to install random stuff from the dark corners of the web.

What to consider before buying one of the best all-in-one computers

An all-in-one PC is easier to build and use than a desktop tower, just as complicated to buy. They are stamped as notebooks so you cannot personalize them after purchase. This means you need to make sure you're getting the right features from day one. There's also an all-in-one display, speakers and often a webcam, all of which can make or break a car.

5 Interesting Startup Deals You May Have Missed In April: Organic Computers, Recycling Chopsticks And Separating Waste

This is a monthly column that lists five great deals you may not have noticed each month. Check out last month's post here.

After a rough first quarter for VC, the second quarter was on fire.

Do some searching. Close more.

Increase your revenue with a comprehensive intelligence solution powered by the industry leader in personal business data.

Let's take a look at a few milestones in technology that might be missed, but are worth a second to read.

repeated sticks

When we leave our favorite Chinese or sushi place, we all grab our chopsticks.

But how many of us throw them away after using them?

Canadian company ChopValue is here to help with some of our erratic eating habits. The startup has raised $7.7 million in new funding to support a network of waste-to-energy microfactories.

ChopValue has saved more than 100 million chopsticks from landfills by transforming what we normally use to stuff our mouths with lo mein into jewelry, kitchenware and other eco-friendly products.

The company plans to use the new funds to enter new markets in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe. It is already testing microfactories in US cities such as Las Vegas and Boston.

Although ChopValue started with chopsticks, the company's model can be used for other types of reuse.

cybernetic brain

It sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but isn't that where all great ideas come from?

Australia's Cortical Labs, a "biocomputing startup" that combines lab-grown human brain cells with computer chips, has just raised $10 million in a funding round from Horizons Ventures.

Cortical Labs plans to use the money to commercialize a biological computer chip known as DishBrain that has learned to play simple video games like Pong.

Some believe that such developments could be the next breakthrough in artificial intelligence, as human neurons have several advantages over their digital counterparts.

If all that isn't scary enough, In-Q-Tel, the venture capital arm of the CIA, is an investor.

More AI

Such a list should include at least one startup using legitimate generative AI, so let's take a look at Harvey's legit AI startup.

The company received an undisclosed $150 million valuation this month from Sequoia Capital, Insider reports.

While the round wasn't widely publicized, Harvey announced a $5 million round from the OpenAI Startup Fund last November when AI was just getting started, so it didn't take long for another big round to be raised. investors even in falling markets.

Instead of using AI for sales or marketing, this San Francisco startup uses it for lawyers, giving them an interface to use AI to edit legal documents or conduct legal research.

Now the question is, what is Harvey's hourly rate?

A new way to make compost

Most of us throw the leftovers down the sink and many of us think they will just disappear into the ether.

Yes, unfortunately it is not. In fact, food waste currently accounts for more than 3 billion tons worldwide each year, and several North American cities have implemented landfill bans and mandatory organic waste separations.

Canada-based Sepura Home has raised a $3.7 million seed round led by sink maker Blanco to help solve the growing problem of cleaning up after meals without making it difficult.

The startup has developed a "smart" composter that connects directly to a pipe under the sink and can effectively separate 99.9% of solid waste that goes down the drain and allows liquid to flow. Waste is stored in closed containers and does not smell until disposed of.

This device will cost around $700 when it starts shipping in a few months.

Can't you do it faster?

While everyone wants to find ways to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, there are natural ways to store it in places like the ocean.

However, once absorbed and stored, it takes millions of years to convert to bicarbonate, so the process is quite slow.

Ebb Carbon, based in San Carlos, California, is trying to speed up that process. Ocean carbon removal startup raises $20 million in two Series A rounds led by Prelude Ventures and Evok Innovations, respectively.

The Ebb solution accelerates the natural alkalinization process, reducing ocean acidification and restoring natural chemistry by allowing more carbon dioxide to enter.

The new cash will allow Ebb to introduce its first system capable of removing 100 tons of CO2 by the end of this year, with a 1,000-ton system to follow soon.

Cook County Bans Reporters From Bringing Computers, Phones Into Courthouse — For Now

Cook County Bans Reporters From Bringing Computers, Phones Into Courthouse — For Now

Reporters covering court hearings and press conferences in Cook County are allowed to bring their computers and cellphones to the 26th and California Criminal Courthouse to do their work.

Not more, according to an order issued Wednesday by Chief District Court Judge Erica Reddick.

Effective immediately, "All media and members of the public, except employees and authorized personnel, must not bring cell phones, laptops or any electronic devices into the George N. Layton Criminal Courthouse."

Television film crews are prohibited from recording in the building's lobby media area, the order said.

Chief Justice spokesman Tim Evans said in a statement that the ban stemmed from an incident this week in which a media representative took a photo with a cell phone in violation of court rules.

A source told the Sun-Times that the TV reporter was in the courtroom this week when a sheriff's deputy saw them taking pictures and taking pictures on his phone. The deputy approached the journalist and asked him to remove the photos, to which the journalist said he had already sent them to the editorial office.

A spokeswoman for the sheriff's department could not immediately provide additional information about the incident.

A spokesman said Evans would meet with members of the media on Friday to "discuss future expectations".

Matt Topic, a lawyer specializing in the Open Government Act, called the ban "excessive."

“While courts must respect integrity and apply their own rules, the ban, which applies to all journalists, including a large number who have brought mobile phones to court for years without incident, seems excessive and worrisome. being First Amendment issues,” Subject said. .

Gone are the days when reporters grabbed their pads and rushed to courthouse lobby phone booths to tell their stories. Journalists now rely on their phones and computers to take notes, write texts, inform the public on social media, and save their stories.

Most citizens are not allowed to bring their phones into court. An exception is made for the jury.

Clerks, attorneys and members of the media are usually allowed into the courthouse with phones and computers, and Cook County sheriff's deputies usually check them in through a separate entrance. Journalists must present their media identification with a photo ID issued by the Chicago Police Department.

The chief justice's office said clerks and lawyers will be allowed to bring electronic devices because they are considered "authorized employees" under the earlier order.

The judge, who works in the building but spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the order, said the ban on cellphones in public places was primarily the result of fears that people would take pictures of witnesses as they testified.

He said he thinks the media exception should continue, and he thinks most of the other judges in the House would agree.
