March 13, 1997: With Apple preparing to cut thousands of jobs, CNN reports that “the coffin door is closing” on Cupertino. Apple is doomed! Doomed!
Knowing what happened in the years following, we guess this could technically be considered “fake news.”
CNN says Apple is doomed
With my Today in Apple history entries, I typically steer clear of highlighting comically inaccurate stories predicting Apple’s doom. After all, hindsight is 20/20. Writing about Apple for a living, I’m sure I’ve covered some dubious rumors over the years that failed to materialize as reported.
Still, more than two decades since the publication of CNN‘s story, “Apple running out of time,” it’s fun to go back and see how wrong the pundits were in 1997.
The death of Apple?
For this particular story, CNN spoke with Gene Glazer, technology analyst at (now defunct) securities firm Dean Witter.
“I don’t see how [Apple] can go much lower than that and do what they have to do, which is get back on track and turn the company around,” Glazer said.
Elsewhere in the article, he said Apple needed to turn things around — and do so quickly — or face the end.
“They don’t have a lot of time,” Glazer said. “I would say even two years is too long.”
As if to compound his incorrect predictions, Glazer totally missed the boat on the Newton MessagePad. He said people likely could bank on the success of Apple’s PDA. Apple had just debuted a new version of its Newton operating system, and was in the process of spinning off Newton as a startup.
According to Glazer, the biggest problem Apple faced was its reputation on Wall Street, which was in tatters.
“The people investing in Apple are contrarians,” he said. “The analysts are generally very pessimistic about the outlook.”
Apple doomed: What happened?
The “Apple is doomed” story, as reported, wasn’t totally wrong. In fact, Apple soon announced plans to cut 4,100 jobs — about one-third of its workforce at the time.
On top of that, Apple then reported a quarterly loss of $56 million that effectively ended then-CEO Gil Amelio’s 500 days of running the company.
The $56 million hit contributed to an overall Apple loss of $1.6 billion during Amelio’s reign. The losing streak wiped out every cent of profit Cupertino had earned since fiscal 1991.
Steve Jobs turns Apple around
However, it didn’t take long for Apple co-founder Steve Jobs to turn things around after his return to the company in September 1997. Aggressive cost-cutting, which also included slashing Apple’s R&D spending on unnecessary projects, helped reduce the company’s losses. In addition, new products like the beige Power Macintosh G3 computer performed very well with customers. (It sold 130,000 units against a forecast of 80,000.)
By January 1998, in fact, Apple became profitable again — well within the time frame Glazer laid out for a turnaround. From there, Apple debuted the iMac G3 and iBook, and never looked back.
Oh, and the Newton — whose future was supposedly all but guaranteed — soon wound up being canceled so Apple could focus on building Macs.

It could be hard to get your hands on the 11.1-inch iPad Pro at launch. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
Apple will soon debut the M3 iPad Pros with OLED screens. A new rumor suggests the smaller 11.1-inch model could be in short supply at launch.
This is due to the panels being in limited supply initially. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro apparently won’t have any supply issues.
Apple to soon get a second OLED iPad Pro supplier
Apple’s upcoming M3 iPad Pros will supposedly use 11.1-inch and 12.9-inch OLED displays. This would be a big upgrade from the current gen models’ LCD and mini LED panels.
Display analyst Ross Young, in an X post, claims the 11.1-inch iPad Pro’s panel production is significantly behind the 12.9-inch model. Samsung Display is currently the sole supplier of the screen. LG Display will start production of the 11.1-inch OLED panels later this month, which should ease supply issues.
So, the 11.1-inch iPad Pro might be in short supply initially, but its availability should improve in the following weeks. LG is already the secondary supplier of 12.9-inch OLED screens for Apple, so the bigger iPad Pro should have better availability at launch.
M3 iPad Pro won’t start shipping before April
Previous reports indicate Apple could launch the M3 iPad Pro in late March or early April. Ross reaffirmed this, saying the panel shipments started in February, and the new iPads won’t start shipping until April.
Apart from an OLED screen, a faster M3 chip, and a thinner chassis, Apple’s 2024 iPad Pro lineup is unlikely to sport other significant changes. We wish Apple would improve the battery life or add extra ports to the tablet, but the chances appear slim.
Alongside new M3 iPad Pros, Apple will purportedly also refresh its iPad Air lineup. Besides an internal spec bump, the company will add a 12.9-inch iPad Air to the lineup, whose design recently leaked in CAD renders. A new revamped Magic Keyboard should debut alongside the new tablets with an aluminum casing.
Upgrade your iPhone photography with this $23 portable LED stream light. Photo: Cult of Mac Deals
Social media and FaceTime mean we’re all shooting more iPhone videos and photos than ever — sometimes in lighting conditions that are far from ideal. This Mini Foldable Stream Light is easy to take anywhere, so it provides better lighting anytime (and anywhere) you plan to be streaming video or taking pix.
Mini Foldable Stream Light delivers better lighting for streaming
The big advantage this streaming light provides is a wide range of color temperatures. If you’ve ever shot a video and thought it looked too red or too blue, what you’re observing is the color temperature of the light out of balance with what your iPhone perceives as white. Fortunately, this portable iPhone accessory can fix this widespread problem easily.
With 24 LED RGB modes to choose from, it’s easy to match your light with the illumination around you. Or, you can use color effects to set the mood. The 66 professional bright eye care beads provide smooth and even light with no flickering, so you can focus on capturing your image without worrying about the darkness or contrast.
This portable key light doubles as an iPhone stand
The Mini Foldable Stream Light serves dual purposes, as it also unfolds into an iPhone stand. Adjust the plastic stand, clamp in your iPhone and then flip up the light (or leave it down if you need a more natural effect). The stand also can serve as a handle for stabler shoots as you’re moving.
The entire package can be stowed in a pocket when folded up, so it’s always with you when you’re ready to shoot. It runs on its own separate 1,000mAh battery that lasts up to eight hours, so it won’t sap your iPhone’s juice.
Save on portable streaming light for better iPhone photos and videos
Get crisper and more effective videos and photos on your iPhone with this Mini Foldable Stream Light, now just $22.99.
iPhone 15 Pro Max Vision is a version of Apple’s premier handset modified so it matches the look of the Vision Pro AR headset. It’s from Dubai-based Caviar, and is actually a beautiful option for someone who uses both devices.
But buyers will need deep pockets. The modification adds tremendously to the cost of the iPhone.
And you have to see Caviar’s crazy mod that turns Samsung S24 Ultra into a Tesla Cybertruck.
Dubai-based luxury brand Caviar details the Vision Pro-like elements in its high-end custom iPhone 15 Pro. Photo: Caviar
But the iPhne 15 Pro Max Vision is a clever idea that’s well executed. Caviar took design elements from Apple’s new AR headset and brought them to the iPhone.
The owners of Apple Vision Pro are offered to choose a custom smartphone that will complement their headset,” says Caviar. “The design features unique elements – color accents, smooth lines of Apple Vision Pro, imitation of the lower panel, recognizable texture of the headset.”
Just so there’s no confusion, the modifications don’t add any functionality to the handset. The changes are cosmetic. Also, Caviar isn’t offering a case. It modifies the actual iPhone 15 Pro Max with a chassis of its design.
That’s part of the reason why the iPhone 15 Pro Max Vision starts at $8,060. It can be ordered today on the Caviar website.
Samsung S24 Ultra Cybertruck is just crazy
If you thought an iPhone with Vision Pro design elements was strange, wait till you see a Samsung S24 Ultra modded to look like a Tesla Cybertruck. Photo: Caviar
While the iPhone mod is bold and daring, the design Caviar created to merge Samsung’s premier Android smartphone and a Tesla Cybertruck is just coo-coo crazy pants.
The company realizes the design is unusual, calling it a “fantastic novelty.” Caviar describes it as “a mini version of Tesla Cybetruck made on the Samsung S24 Ultra chassis.”
As noted, sometimes Caviar’s designs stray over the line into being too over the top. This Android model flies over that line riding a flaming motorcycle while holding two American flags and jumping 17 school buses.

M3 MacBook Pro packs same design as powerful siblings
With the M3 MacBook Pro, you get a 14-inch Liquid Retina XDR panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. It’s capable of hitting a peak brightness of 1,000 nits. The machine features the new boxy and squarish design that Apple debuted with its revamped M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro lineup in 2021.
The laptop also comes with plenty of ports. In addition to its MagSafe 3 charging port and 3.5 mm headphone jack, it offers two Thunderbolt/USB 4 port, san SDXC card slot and an HDMI port.
The M3 chip powering the machine is also decently fast and capable enough to handle your average workload easily. Despite this, the laptop boasts an all-day battery life. It will even gain support for dual external monitors with an update later this year.
Unless you have a heavy workload, the M3 MacBook Pro should suffice your needs. And if you are confused, read our M3 versus M3 Pro MacBook Pro comparison to decide if you should opt for the more powerful model.

GameSir X2s Type-C Mobile Controller review
I get it: you don’t want to line up three gems or match tiles. You want to play serious games on your iPhone. But on-screen, virtual controls can be frustrating with first-person shooters or role-playing games.
A mobile game controller makes all the difference. One of these brings the familiar buttons and sticks to your iPhone (or Android) so you don’t find your characters walking off cliffs or firing off in random directions.
Controllers come in a variety of sizes and designs. The GameSir X2s Type-C Mobile Controller emphasizes portability but without sacrificing playability.
It’s for iPhone 15 and future Apple handsets with a USB-C port. It is also compatible with Androids for cross-platform households. All you need to do is plug it in and start playing.
The telescope design of the GameSir X2s means it’s portable but fits the largest iPhones. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
GameSir X2s Type-C Mobile Controller is designed to make your iPhone function like a Nintendo Switch, with the standard buttons, triggers and sticks on either side of the screen.
Without the handset, the accessory is 7.0 inches by 3.3 inches by 1.5 inches. It weighs a mere 0.4 pounds.
It’s very portable, fitting easily into a backpack or even a large purse. But be careful, the outer casing is plastic and it’s covered in controls. A bit of abuse might break this gadget.
When it comes time to play, the GameSir X2s telescopes to fit my iPhone 15 Plus.
Standard layout of buttons, sticks and triggers
GameSir X2s doesn’t leave out shoulder buttons and triggers. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
I’ve spent more hours than I can count with a game controller in my hands. My fingers know exactly where all the buttons, sticks, etc. are supposed to be.
The GameSir X2s has close to the standard Xbox layout. On the left side is a joystick and D-pad. On the right side is a second joystick and ABXY buttons. Plus L1/L2 bumpers and R1/R2 triggers. I say “close to the standard” because the front-facing joysticks and buttons are lined up above each other, not diagonally as they are on Microsoft’s controller.
The buttons are reasonably clicky. They aren’t quite as good as the ones on a name-brand Xbox controller but they certainly didn’t interfere with hours of enjoyable gameplay.
As a nice touch, the sticks and triggers use the Hall effect so they won’t develop drift.
While I appreciate the portability, during long gaming sessions I miss the ergonomic shape of the GameSir G8. It’s much more curvy and the bigger grips make it fit more comfortably in my hands. The grips on the X2s are barely there. But the G8 is also significantly larger and therefore less easy to carry around.
Lean back and play
I started tested the GameSir X2s by playing Cypher 007, a James Bond-themed action game. The controller performed flawlessly, and makes playing much more enjoyable than on-screen controls. And I tested the clip-on accessory with Spyder, another Apple Arcade game I enjoy.
Support for game controllers like this one is built into iOS. But game developers have to add support too. To find out what’s available, you can find a list of hundreds of iOS games that the X2s definitely works with on the GameSir website. And most Apple Arcade games support controllers, too.
All of the cloud-gaming services I’ve tried recommend players use a controller, so they definitely support them. If you want to play Fortnite on your iPhone again, you can.
But not every iPhone game supports controllers. It’s frustrating. All you can do is check ahead of time.
iPhone game controller with convenience of USB-C
GameSir’s new game controller has the USB-C connector used by the latest iPhone models. And a USB-C port, too. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
One of the best features of the product is right there in the name: GameSir X2s Type-C Mobile Controller. The built-in USB-C connector makes this a plug-and-play device. Literally.
There’s no hassling with Bluetooth setup. Simply put your iPhone with a USB-C port (or an Android) into the telescoping controller and start having fun. This makes sharing the accessory between several iPhones a cinch.
GameSir designed the USB-C connector to swivel up and down, so there’s no danger of damaging it or your iPhone while inserting the handset into the slider.
Those with earlier iPhone models that don’t have a Lighting port aren’t left out in the cold. You want the GameSir X2 Lightning.
For extra convenience, your phone supplies power to the controller, so you don’t need to worry about a second battery. And if your handset battery starts to get low, just plug a USB-C cable into the game controller to charge your iPhone.
GameSir video
The developer of this iPhone game controller created a video to show off the hardware features:
GameSir X2s Type-C Mobile Controller final thoughts
I can get lost in a good game for hours. That’s why I like playing one on long trips. Attach this controller to your iPhone, start something fun and big chunks of boring travel can disappear.
And the accessory is so easy to use. It’s literally plug-and-play.
★★★★☆
Pricing
The GameSir X2s Type-C Mobile Controller is available for purchase for $45.99 / £49.99 / €59.99.
As noted, those with iPhone models from before Apple made the switch to USB-C, you want the GameSir X2 Lightning, which I also reviewed. Alternatively, there’s a Bluetooth version of the X2 for those who want to game on both iPhone and Android. That one costs $59.99.
Those looking for a more ergonomic controller with USB-C should read my review of GameSir G8. It’s not as portable, though.
At this point, a $200 billion market cap seems almost quaint for Apple. Photo illustration: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
March 12, 2010: Apple passes Walmart and investment firm Berkshire Hathaway in value to take third place in market capitalization among publicly listed U.S. companies. The Apple market cap soars past $200 billion, fueled by intense excitement over the first-generation iPad.
Things look good for the company as it guns for powerhouses ExxonMobil and Microsoft.
Back in 2010, it didn’t take Apple long to catch up to market leaders ExxonMobil and Microsoft after passing Walmart. In May 2010, Apple overtook Microsoft, surpassing the tech giant that dominated Cupertino during the previous decade. A little over a year after that, on August 9, 2011, Apple blew past oil giant ExxonMobil to become the world’s most valuable company.
In all, it was an astonishing turnaround for a company that came perilously close to going out of business during the 1990s.
Did you follow Apple during its climb to the top of the stock market? Did you possess the foresight to invest before the Apple market cap shot sky-high? Let us know in the comments below.

Create a virtual card for your Apple Cash. Image: D. Griffin Jones/Cult of Mac
You can get a temporary debit card number to pay with Apple Cash online in case you want to pay with your balance on a site that doesn’t accept Apple Pay. If you have a lot of money sitting in your Apple Cash account, this can be a convenient way to pay without using your other cards. (It’s also handy if you don’t have any credit or debit cards from other banks.)
In case it’s unclear, Apple Cash is what you receive when someone sends you money via iMessage. It’s not to be confused with the other products with similar names. Apple Card is a highly rated credit card you can apply for. (It’s a physical card, made of titanium.) Apple Card Savings is a high-interest savings account for people with a physical Apple Card. And Apple Pay is a payment method (secured by Face ID, Touch ID or your device’s passcode) that lets you pay with credit/debit cards from other banks.
Previously, you could only pay with your Apple Cash via Apple Pay (or transfer it to your bank). Now, you can tie your Apple Cash to a virtual card number to pay using your Apple Cash balance online. Here’s how to set it up.
Benefits of using an Apple Cash card number
Since this is a virtual card number, there are a few benefits to paying with your Apple Cash. The security code changes regularly and automatically, so it’s very hard for your card info to be stolen. And anytime you suspect fraud, you can refresh it with a new card number. Of course, you don’t need to wait for a new physical card to be made and mailed to your house — you can use it instantly.
You also don’t have to memorize a constantly changing security code or card number — it lives inside Safari autofill, so you you don’t really have to do anything.
