New York-based Perception Neuroscience, the clinical-stage psychedelic biotechnology company Atai Life Sciences (NASDAQ: ATAI ), announced the results of its PCN-101 study of a specific R-ketamine in patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD).
Although the combination showed signs of efficacy at all time points, the study did not reach the primary endpoint of a statistically significant change from baseline in participants' MADRS (Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale) at 24 hours compared to placebo, the company said. The MRS is a widely used clinically assessed measure of depression severity.
A two-week trial study evaluated the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of a single intravenous injection of PCN-101 in 102 patients with TRD.
Other primary endpoints were the proportion of patients defined as responders, i.e. the proportion of patients with a 50% improvement from baseline on the MADRS and the proportion of patients with an overall MADRS score of less than 10.

For these measures, the study did not reach statistical significance, although response and remission rates were higher in the 60 mg group.
PCN-101 was generally well tolerated, with remission and withdrawal rates comparable to placebo.
Based on the overall results, Atai said it will look closely at the study data and work with understanding on next steps, "not limited to exploring strategic partnership options."
After this news, the share price of the company fell. Shares fell 30% to close at $1.86 per share.

Strong employment reports, solid data on manufacturing and consumer spending are still fresh. Whenever America says its economy is strong, Wall Street gets scared.
So why does Wall Street see good news as bad news?
"The short answer is that as the economy grows, there will be more pressure on the Fed to raise interest rates, especially on jobs," said John Lear, chief economist at Morning Consult.
Strong economic reports suggest the Fed's historic interest rate hikes may not have the desired effect, and Jerome Powell & Co. may need longer rates to slow the economy and curb inflation. The price increase is bad news for stocks, as it fuels corporate earnings
Wall Street is especially sensitive to strong job numbers. The stability of the labor market has been impressive. The US economy added 4.5 million jobs last year, the second-highest job increase in history by more than 10 million. The fear is that a stronger job market (good for Main Street) will lead to higher inflation (bad for business and Wall Street).
For investors, the Goldilocks scenario will be a strong labor market showing signs of cooling. (Not too hot, not too cold, just right.)
For example, the December jobs report. December added 223,000 new jobs, but it was the slowest pace since December 2020. Wages increased 4.6% year over year in December, the slowest since August 2021. That may not sound like good news for you and for me, but this is Wall Street. This reading has been interpreted as a sign that the Federation drug may be starting to work.
"One of the things we've seen is that wage growth has been very strong and there's concern that eventually wage growth will drive up inflation," Lear told CNN's "Early Start." "So the Fed wants to raise interest rates to try to reduce the demand for workers and lower wages, which will ultimately reduce inflation."
It's a balancing act. The Fed wants to end high inflation, but it doesn't want to plunge the economy into a recession.
This is the latest story of the messy yes-but economy. Yes, the economy is strong, but the Fed may have to provide more painkillers later on. Yes, the job market is strong, but it's showing signs of slowing down. Yes, it was the second best year in terms of job creation, but it's not expected to last, and that could be good news as it comes out of the economy a little bit.
This adds to the confusion of Wall Street economists. Covid, the war in Ukraine, labor shortages, supply chain disruptions… all of these issues mean we need to throw conventional economic wisdom out the window. We have no history to guide us in this matter. There are no easy solutions.

The opinions expressed by the activists are their own.
After massive growth in the tech industry in 2020, tech companies are downsizing and cutting their workforces in half . According to Fortune, more than 120,000 technical service workers will lose their jobs in 2022 due to mass layoffs. Tech companies are bemoaning the macroeconomic downturn, and the tech industry's lag is forcing them to make tough decisions.
During the Covid-19 lockdown, all businesses had to go online as the internet was still the only place where traffic flowed freely. As a result, the technology industry operating as a new property has seen tremendous revenue and operational growth, with revenue up 90% in terms of value and inventory.
While the tech industry has enjoyed unprecedented success, other companies have suffered major downturns or outright collapses, such as: B. hospitality industry. These struggling companies have had to merge and collaborate with the tech industry. This led to a sudden boom in the tech industry, and companies began expanding their workforces to meet demand.
Unfortunately, the downside is that tech companies are drowning in a pool of lost revenue. As the New York Times headline, "When Your Boss Is Crying But You're Getting Fired," employers are scrambling to contain the situation and are being forced to cut costs, including laying off talent.

Fresh graduates are in a tough spot
While the world worries about ex-employees at god knows what jobs , I worry more about the fate of new graduates. those who are now in the market in the wake of ex-meta engineers and ex-meta engineers. to compete Amazon women. Product manager. In general, the graduate job market has never been so favorable. Hiring managers are "promised" to prioritize candidates with more practical experience over freshmen .
The United States boasted that it had more jobs than human resources and was opening its doors to foreign talent. The growing demand for tech talent has made it easier for fresh graduates to break into the tech industry. However, continued layoffs suggest we have more tech talent than available jobs. I can't help but imagine the fate of new tech talent entering the field. New graduates will face more competition than ever, competing with talent from around the world and freezing their hiring at their dream companies. 2023 could be a tough year for those fresh out of college, graduating and jumping through hoops in the tech industry.
The probability that new talents will get good positions in the technology sector is very high. Therefore, this article examines what 2023 might look like for college graduates looking to enter the tech industry. Here are some of the biggest challenges facing the tech industry today and how they affect new graduates:
reductions
This year saw a record number of layoffs in the tech industry. For example, Meta has laid off about 13% of its total workforce, or about 11,000 of its employees. Twitter, one of the largest technology companies, has laid off half of its workforce, about 3,700 workers. On top of the downsizing trend, Amazon will cut 10,000 jobs along with Best Buy, Ford Motors, HBO Max, Peloton, Shopify, Re/Max, Walmart and Wayfair. .
Moreover, experts predict that this will not be the end of layoffs at tech companies. It is estimated that we could see 30,000 to 40,000 more layoffs in the first quarter of 2023. So, about 40,000 experienced workers will attack a bloated industry and compete with these newbies, who will have an even harder time standing a chance in a closed recruitment industry.

Homework
Due to the pandemic, telecommuting is becoming a culture in all companies, and the percentage of companies adopting telecommuting policies is growing exponentially every year. One of the advantages of telecommuting is the ability to work with people from different parts of the world. This means that local work, normally limited to people living in the United States, will be open to the global community.
However, having a job in the United States does not automatically mean that the job is limited to living in the United States. The number of new graduates will increase in the difficult labor market. In other words, new graduates aren't just competing against ex-Twitter employees; You'll be competing with equally brilliant new graduates who are less qualified but also cheaper to work for.
Hiring freeze and absenteeism
Mark Zuckerberg's message to Meta employees stated that Meta will freeze hiring until December. So have Twitter, Google, Amazon, and others. The dreams of fresh graduates hoping to partner with these tech giants now seem ambitious.
While many predict an increase in the number of startups, if we spread the output of each startup over about 110 people, which is actually a lot, it would take 100 startups to get a ton of meta releases. How much more so when we add people from Amazon, Twitter and other tech giants, as well as the skilled unemployed. Worryingly, the unemployment rate is 3.7% in November 2022, and new graduates have yet to make progress this cycle.

bad economy
The global economy is not in the best shape since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Many of America's allies in Russia and its allies suspended operations to show their support for Ukraine, costing them dearly. Since the start of Russian aggression against Ukraine, Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts show a sharp drop in GDP growth forecasts for the year to 0.4%. Not to mention the huge changes in cash flow in the tech industry from year to year. While recent graduates have no business in the U.S. economy, the outlook for the turnaround of these tech giants is not perfect, and startups may not have enough money in a booming economy. .
The business world is not as pleasant as it used to be. Startups need to be more serious than their older peers to make waves. Fresh graduates who want to start startups have to work harder to beat the competition. We will see a "survival mode" show before these startups take their first breath in the business growth cycle. A fair where start-ups have to be careful and diligent to create an incentive to attract the attention of major investors, first customers and more qualified employees, and then compete at a high level.
Potential learning opportunities
While the odds of getting an engineering degree are high, that doesn't mean all doors are closed. Here are some tips to consider:
Take advantage of remote work to explore job opportunities outside the United States; Europe, Asia and other continents are now investing heavily in the technology.
Note: Some large tech companies are still reluctant to hire engineers for their projects. Apple says it will hire a mixed reality engineer for its Metaverse project. TikTok also plans to add another 1,000 employees to its team.
Refine your skills and stand out. history shows that even during hiring freezes, companies continue to hire exceptional talent. They close the door of mass work. Your meta dream is still coming true, but it's pretty weak now.
Think about practice. Internships are the easiest way to break into top companies, even during a hiring freeze.
Look at the startups. startups continue to raise funds from venture capitalists and develop all kinds of software. You can get a job at a startup by joining a job community, following the right people on Twitter, participating on LinkedIn, and more.

Today Walmart is one of the largest retailers in the world. However, it all started with Sam Walton's vision of a new business model. More importantly, Sam paved the way for the inherited wealth of the Walton family. Today, the Walmart brand is a public company. At its core, Wal-Mart is a family business owned and operated by the Walton family.

In Fayetteville, Lamont "L" Clark and the Clark family have established themselves as a well-known name in entertainment and nightlife. L. Clark's childhood dream was to own and operate a nightclub.
Working in clubs in his youth, Clark dreamed of becoming a promoter. However, the Clark family's entertainment empire was in existence before L.L. His uncle Freddie, or "Uncle", was a major player in the Fayetteville entertainment industry for many years.

However, the party did not give the expected results. L reconsidered her approach and re-rented the booth for an event called Mrs. Claus and Elvis for Christmas. The success of the event led to the possibility of parties on Thursdays.
These Thursdays help Al and his family spend Saturday night at the Odyssey nightclub. However, L still wants to own and manage his own space.
In 2001, he went into business with a cabaret owner and opened the Club Palace (now Mansion Cabaret) on Bragg Boulevard. Club Palace was known for its most beautiful parties such as First Sundays.
Veteran Clark sent out flyers around Fort Bragg. Following the success of Club Palace, L and the Clarks opened an establishment on Reford Road called Carolina Live (formerly Red Roper). National artists performed at the opening of Carolina Live.
The first national artist to perform at Carolina Live was Atlanta rap legend Pastor Troy. From there, Carolina Live became the venue for a number of high-profile musical performances.
In addition, Clark was able to keep his "ears open" and make contacts in the music industry. His uncle Freddie was instrumental in Empire Records' success by signing XStyles, whose songs are still played in nightclubs across the United States.
Another member of the Clark family, Wayne (or Wayno), his cousin, worked for Jay-Z's Rockavilla Records in the early 2000s and is now Vice President of A&R at the Atlanta-based Music Quality Control Center. Featuring famous artists such as Migos and Lil' Baby.
Al didn't want me in the music business. However, he knew a void that needed to be filled. While Fayetteville is home to great musicians such as J. Cole and Murray, no established organization provides a platform for artist development.
Enter Route 2 Real Records. Way 2 Real Records, founded by Ankh Clark and her partner, serves as a hub for artists to grow and develop without having to travel to Atlanta or Charlotte. L works in the department of selection and development of artists. As a club owner, he has faced obstacles in the music industry and wants to pass on the knowledge he has gained from this experience.
Not only does he want to sign artists, he wants to teach them how to monetize their art. The first site was Fayetteville artist Mr. Red carpet. New red carpet single "Oh Ok" is gaining popularity in the region and online.
Together with Mr. Red Carpet Lamont and the Clark family, they continue to provide a platform and opportunity for artists to grow.
On Saturday, independent artists will have the opportunity to perform alongside national artists Kodak Black, Ruby Rose, Nardo Wake and Venice 2 Times at the Crown Coliseum as part of their Super Gremlin Tour. Hosted by country singer Kristen Rock.
However, it doesn't stop there. L plans to open a brick building that will serve as a resource center for the development and training of artists. In addition, he wants to organize a group of 10 of the city's greatest artists.
"It's noise. Treat your crush like a business," says L. "Always put God first."
Congratulations to the L family, Clark and all the activists. Peace

Members of the powerful House finance committee blocked a plan by the state Department of Natural Resources to spend $15.5 million on a conservation easement to preserve 56,000 acres of northern Wisconsin forests.
The purchase could be the largest land conservation action in state history, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.
The DNR's policy committee signed the agreement in October, agreeing to spend about $10.8 million in federal forestry assets and about $4 million in state administrative funds on the project.
But state Sen. Mary Felzkowski, a Republican Irma, who sits on the Finance Committee, said Thursday that she and other committee members declined to name their opposition to the use of public money for the project.

He told Wisconsin Public Radio that the easement would mean the 56,000 acres would never be developed. He added that there is already a lot of public land in northern Wisconsin, and local governments are concerned about the lack of housing and the availability of land.
"You can't constantly take a property and write it off, deregister it from the private (sector) and write it off from the public," he said. "We cannot afford to continue serving in the north."
Republican lawmakers generally oppose removing private land from tax records.

The word "fintech" has dominated tech stocks in recent years. From crowdfunding to customer growth, product launches to scandals, the new game changers are everywhere in consumer banking, credit, payments, investing and cryptocurrencies.
You have good reason to think we have reached the pinnacle of fintech.
But the areas where most fintechs focus today represent only a small fraction of the $23 trillion global financial services market. Products like Cash App, Robinhood, and Chime operate in markets that are intuitive to the average consumer, but consumers are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.
The next wave of fintechs will focus on increasing lesser-known and less "sexy" markets that are critical to the global economy, and one of the biggest markets poised to experience disruption is agricultural finance. 2022 has seen a quiet but steady rise in fintech products made for mass farming, and it's just getting started.
Why offset agriculture in the first place? In the technology sector, for two main reasons: the size of the market and the limitations of existing service providers.
Looking at the United States alone, while agriculture contributed $134.7 billion to GDP in 2020, industries that depend on agriculture — food manufacturing, food service, textiles — contribute more than $1 trillion annually. economy, which contributes more than 5% to the annual GDP. For many developing countries, the share of agriculture in the total economy is much higher, in some countries as high as 25%.
However, financial services are not as competitive as one would expect in a sector as large as agriculture. Looking back at the US market, which is one of the best in terms of farm finance, farm debt has risen steadily over the past year, farm loan interest rates have risen sharply, and farm loans have continued to grow, while the number of Agricultural banks targeting banks remained down.
Enter fintech.
In a world where demand for food will grow 70% by 2050, requiring an annual investment of $80 billion, slow incumbents create huge opportunities for new entrants.
While “agricultural finance” refers to a broad and diverse set of activities – equipment lending, supply chain finance, commodity trading, agribusiness banking – emerging fintech companies focus on a variety of sub-sectors;
Agricultural loans. England's Oxbury Bank double-funded £650m in farm loans to British farmers last year. Tarfin in Turkey and Agro.Club in Eastern Europe provide supply chain finance to medium-sized farmers, who usually have to turn to agricultural suppliers for loans at exorbitant interest rates. Companies like Crowde in Indonesia and Campo Capital in Brazil have built a network of agricultural loan partners. Players like Traive, AgroLend, Terra MONTH3: Magna and Agree are involved in livestock loans in Latin America. ProducePay allows Mexican farmers to take out loans against collateral from their American buyers.
Agricultural payments. Agriculture tends to lag behind in adopting new payment methods, as transactional products such as checks still account for 90% of the industry. Bushel recently launched an integrated payment gateway, digital wallet and payment functionality that connects shoppers to 40% of US grain suppliers.
Product prices and commercial data. Deep markets in grain, livestock and other commodities are critical to a well-functioning agricultural supply chain, and accurate price data is the lifeblood of this sector. This market allows buyers to protect themselves from rising food prices and large agribusinesses to protect themselves from price fluctuations in the supply chain. FarmLead specializes in digitally connecting grain trading networks and integrating trade data into other digital tools for grain growers and buyers.
Insurance: Agriculture is the most balanced sector in terms of climate change-related risks from droughts, floods and natural disasters. Insurance is essential to prevent the collapse of a fragile agricultural system, but traditional insurance companies are struggling to cover agricultural insurance. This is where platforms like World Cover, which offers satellite climate insurance to small farmers in countries like Ghana, Uganda and Kenya, or GramCover, which focuses on access to insurance for farmers in India, come into play.
Market . While ecommerce platforms like Shopify have opened up global retail marketplaces to independent sellers, most farmers markets still operate as centralized offline exchanges. In Kenya, startups such as Twiga Foods, FarmShine, ShambaPride and M-Farm have set up platforms to directly connect farmers with buyers and publish easily accessible pricing information.
Banking. The biggest earners for fintech companies are acquiring new customers, such as loans or insurance, and cross-selling banking products tailored to their specific needs. DeHaat provides financial services to farmers in India in the fields of credit, procurement, advisory and sales. New Zealand data provides financial planning tools for farmers. FarmDrive creates a credit score for Kenyan farmers. Seso provides recruiting, workforce, and asset management tools to streamline payroll in US agriculture.
Over the next decade, we will see the development of parallel markets for fintech products across all categories: banking, loans, savings, payments, investments, HR, payroll and trading, with a particular focus on agriculture.
While agriculture may not be the most obvious market for fintech, it is certainly one of the largest and most productive, and I expect many of these companies to thrive and dominate the next wave of fintech.

Gilead Sciences has pledged billions of dollars to Galapagos in an autoimmune disease partnership that is far from expected. But the drugmaker is not giving up on this therapeutic area and is now forming a new alliance with a new partner whose technology could offer treatments for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
The partner is EVOQ Therapeutics, a startup whose technology takes a novel approach to the antigen-specific immune response. Specific financial terms of the deal announced Tuesday were not disclosed, but the companies said EVOQ could receive up to $685.5 million in upfront payments, exercise options and milestone payments.
Autoimmune diseases develop when the balance of the immune system is shifted towards hyperactivation of immune cells. EVOQ's approach to treating such diseases targets dendritic cells, antigen-presenting cells that prime immune cells for immune tolerance or immune activation responses. The company says its technology can stimulate dendritic cells to trigger an anti-inflammatory response that restores immune tolerance.
The EVOQ technology, known as NanoDisc, is designed to deliver disease-specific antigens to lymph nodes, which are rich reservoirs of dendritic cells. Under the terms of the agreement with Gilead, both companies will collaborate on preclinical research. The agreement allows Gilead to license the NanoDisc technology exclusively for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. If the Foster City, California-based drugmaker exercises those options, it will be responsible for the clinical development of drug candidates. If the drugs receive regulatory approval, Gilead will also market them. EVOQ will then receive royalties from sales of Gilead's commercial products.
"Despite great advances in the last two decades, there remains a significant unmet need for people with inflammatory and autoimmune diseases," said Flavius Martin, Gilead's executive vice president of research. "We are excited to partner with EVOQ to further expand our autoimmune line to meet the needs of people living with the condition."
Gilead expressed similar sentiments in 2019 when it reached a $5 billion deal with Galapagos to collaborate on six drugs in clinical phase and another 20 in preclinical development. The agreement expanded on a previous alliance for filgotinib, which was rejected by the FDA but received regulatory approval in Japan and Europe for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Although Gilead collects royalties on sales of its partner's product, most of the drug is now owned by Galapagos. Other affiliate programs have also failed. In 2021, Gilead and Galapagos halted the development of giritaxate in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis after an independent data monitoring committee evaluated the clinical data and concluded that the drug's benefits did not outweigh its risks.
Gilead is EVOQ's second pharmaceutical partner. Two years ago, the startup announced a secret licensing and collaboration agreement with Amgen to cover the development of new drugs for autoimmune diseases. The deal puts EVOQ in line for up to $240 million in initial and milestone payments.

The clinical trial landscape in primary sclerosing cholangitis: current and new opportunities for patients
A woman found dead near Alligator Alley was once the victim of a sex trafficker portrayed in a South Florida newspaper investigation.
Ivy Marie Bedell, 20, and her story as a trafficked teenager in South Florida were featured in the Sun Sentinel Project on Child Sex Trafficking, published in November. Bedell began moving when he was 14.
The body of a woman was found near Mile Marker 42 Wednesday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol reported. He picked up the body on Interstate 75 through the Everglades and drove to Fort Lauderdale.

A spokesman for the Broward Sheriff's Office told the Miami Herald that the body was euthanized and an autopsy showed no signs of foul play. Bedell's cause of death will be determined based on toxicology results, the spokesman said.
Homicide detectives investigate how and why Bedell's body ended up in Alligator Alley.
The Sun Sentinel reports that Bedell's grandmother, Barbara Lechler, fought for Bedell's rescue for years. But on Wednesday, Broward MPs went to Lechler's Deerfield Beach home to break news of Lechler's danger.
Lechler told the Sun Sentinel last summer that she was hoping for a grandchild. After being arrested by the plantation police, he was ordered to enter a drug treatment program. When last approached on December 23, Bedell promised to remain in a medical facility but escaped after cutting his ankle.
Lechler told the Sun Sentinel Bedell's life had recently been threatened by human traffickers, and he'd even seen them interact with each other.
"You can never take them away from me," said Lechler, the dealer told her. He turned to his grandson.
– Ivy, get in the car now.
"He's going to kill us," Bedell told his grandmother. – Nana, go ahead.
Anyone with information about Bedell's death should contact Det. Submit a tip by calling Bozena Gazda-Morales at 954-321-4325 or through the SaferWatch app. You can also call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
After long waiting! Ellie Goulding has finally addressed the rumors that Ed Sheeran cheated on Niall Horan and set the record straight.
But what really happened between the three singers? Read on for more details.
Ellie Goulding cheated on Ed Sheeran with Niall Horan?
According to the "Love Me Like You Do" singer, no, he didn't. After she posted a TikTok video of Ellie dancing to Harry Styles "as it were" on New Year's Eve, one commenter called her and said, "I can't believe you cheated on Ed with Niall but you killed him."
For her part, the British singer praised, saying: "Wrong!!!!! But also to die for."
Looks like the comment has been deleted.
How did the Ellie Goulding, Ed Sheeran and Niall Horan rumors start?
For years, Ed's song "Don't" from his 2014 album X was rumored to be about his relationship with former One Direction member Ellie.
"I wish I wrote it like I did/How confused I was when he kissed me/Now he has to understand, 'Cause I'm sitting here singing," reads one line of the lyrics, and the fan replies that it's been a wait. Long Hypothetically describes the whole situation. Elsewhere in the song Ed stated that he was "never seen as a threat, until, of course, to disappear to have sex with him".
Basically, the three singers performed at the V Festival in 2013 and that is where the alleged relationship took place after Niall was seen making advances on Ellie at the event.
Immediately after the song was released, the "Lego House" musician denied the song's meaning, though speculation was rife. For his part, Ed told Entertainment Weekly in 2015 that he is "never guarded" about who the song is.
"What happened, he added, was that a newspaper in England had just confirmed it, though it never happened. We called them and they stopped the story. But, of course, the damage was done by then, as every other newspaper noted. So I never confirmed it."
How long have Ellie Goulding and Ed Sheeran been a couple?
In 2013, she hinted at their past relationship during a radio interview after the singer was seen holding hands backstage at the MTV Video Music Awards.
"I mean, normal people don't hold hands when they're just friends," he told Washington radio station Click 98.9 in a September 2013 interview. “It happens. And now it doesn't.”
For her part, Ellie seemed to deny that they were a couple.
She tweeted at the time: "I love holding hands with my friends means we are an item." In this case, I have many connections. Lovers not haters.
For his part, Niall had no drama to speak of.

Do you remember the overwhelming joy that filled your heart when you saw this game? What seems perfect to you. Whether it's a Cabbage Patch Kid, a Furby or even Tickle Me Elmo, it doesn't matter if your parents don't understand his cuteness. You are in love with your new boyfriend.
Well, that's what many felt when they first saw M3GAN in a trailer last October where American Girl Doll Gone Wild invaded and hacked and then launched her into an inexplicable yet powerful dance. It gave us goosebumps and won our hearts. But can the real movie behind this crazy trailer live up to the powerful emotions that dance has fueled, both in our souls and on LGBT TikTok? I'm happy to report that the answer is yes.
Keep your wig because a bizarre monster has arrived and he has a better victory than the Babadook.
The killer doll and the creepy children's subgenre collide in Gerard Johnston's ( Housebound ) spicy thriller. After losing her parents in a tragic car accident, nine-year-old Cady (a heartbroken Violet McGraw) is placed in the care of her aunt Gemma (Allison Williams), a workaholic game designer who is completely obsessed with she. Build: M3GAN. (Generative Android Model 3). A charming life-size doll, M3GAN has quickly become a popular craze for newborns and caregivers. To Cady, she is a friend and protector who always has time for her and can never die, unlike her very unreliable and murderous parents! For Gemma, M3GAN is a tireless nanny and a path to great professional success. That is, until he began to suspect that the M3GAN protocols were circumventing Isaac Asimov's first law of collisions.
M3GAN follows in the footsteps of Chucky from Child 's Play and is cute and scary at the same time. There is something excitingly charming about that piercing gaze and the naïve assumption that play can't hurt. But because it looks so realistic, this film has the added appeal of creepy childhood horror. M3GAN appears as Robo Roda, the lovable little serial killer from 1956's The Bad Seed , from his neatly trimmed hair to his casual clothes and creepy smile. We wonder, especially as she begins to impress Cady, what kind of darkness lurks behind this innocent facade?
Johnston embraces this mysterious valley through contrast. Teenage actress and dancer Amy Donald plays the physicist M3GAN, giving her natural grace, but with a tone so subtle it seems childish. Meanwhile, while her hair and dress make her perfect for a photo shoot, the doll's hands are decidedly rubbery, as is her face, which is a constant reminder of the loneliness between her and her dysfunctional human family. Whether you're jamming, practicing handwashing etiquette, staring, or singing the chill-inducing version of "Titanium," M3GAN is both beautiful and brutal because it's unknown. In the blink of an eye, she can be flipping through self-help books about grief, or hunting down a creepy little boy like a bear stalks a poacher who threatens her cubs. After all, she's a star, so who are we not to be dazzled?
Despite its PG-13 rating, Akeelah Cooper's screenplay (with a story by James Wan) is steeped in the angst of adulthood: being a bad parent, stuck with a child you don't want to not have, and struggling to balance the work and life. and fear of success, which reflects nightmares.
Allison Williams (who made her mark on the horror genre with Jordan Peele's Get Out ) firmly establishes human drama in this killer sci-fi dollhouse. With a personality defined by her ambition and action, Gemma struggles when her flamboyant niece needs her attention and a boy doesn't know the difference between toys and collectibles. His concerns with parenting and identity shine through, leaving viewers with goosebumps to get to know him. This demonstrates the ideal setup for M3GAN for tasks such as aphid detection, taking on the role of shoulder to cry on, storyteller, guide and mentor. It's a gift, and a homemade uniform, that works with the millennial pride of rush culture in a mix of complex feelings.
There is incredible excitement at this point in the honeymoon, as Cady happily frolics with her robot friend and Gemma rejoices in her sense of focus, sleep, and time returning to herself. (A parent's dream!) But cracks begin to appear in that shell: a sharp stare here, a quivering silicone lip there, a sarcastic response in a tense moment. And with each we feel that the honeymoon is over. Terror is coming. And with every step towards disaster, we laugh in anticipation. Not that we want to see Gemma destroyed, not necessarily, but perhaps we cringe at the realization of her selfishness, and on some level we long to see her destroyed. (Even, or especially, if we can imagine following in his footsteps.) And besides, M3GAN is a slasher slasher.
Much of the humor in M3GAN feels messy in the best possible way. A small miracle with a titanium core mixes shades with the cold sharpness of a frozen dropper. Kudos to Jenna Davis, whose vocal performance as M3GAN sounds like your talking Barbie slowly starting to despise you. Alongside TikTok dancer Donald, M3gan is a beast of sexy charisma that seems to capture the feelings of Bette Davis and Ice Queen Joan Crawford without the cheesy theatrics.
The image of the infinite woman, together with the third act monologue, reinforces the underlying nuances of the film's bizarre reading, as M3GAN condemns Gemma not only as a bad mother, but also as a capricious partner. There's a kind of heartbreaking madness to this scene, but thanks to Davis' earnestness and Williams' horror, there's also an essence of raw emotion that makes this confrontation not only infuriating, but startling.
satisfying! Don't mistake a PG-13 rating for a red flag. Admittedly, there isn't much blood here compared to the Saw Van films. But the massacre was nevertheless badly damaged by Johnston's clever escalation of the threat. Some of the violence happens off-screen, thanks to a sneaky, choking-inducing outburst. But for little Cady's hated enemies, the showdown will be a scene of torture, though not gory.
The kill scenes are fun, a little scary for disoriented adults on the verge of death. But it is uncertainty that drives them to provide such perverted joy. Johnston patiently creates scenarios, allowing us to confidently immerse ourselves in the carnage to come. This famous dance is a dramatic confirmation of this. Like Michael Myers who relentlessly stalks his victims, M3GAN satisfies us with its calm but firm, if more effective, approach to its doomed victims. Every step in this classic shoe gives you goosebumps.
Look, let's be honest: This movie could have been incredibly silly and probably very funny. But there's more to this killer game/scary movie for kids than meets the eye. With thoughtful character designs brought together from two hit shows, Johnston has created a new horror icon with M3GAN. Like the bomber jackets that have stalked her before, she has a creepy style enhanced by her destructive femininity. Their dance scene isn't just a fleeting moment of unforgettable mayhem, it's part of what sets M3GAN apart; It's a little girl's dream game and a parent's worst nightmare. It's complex, challenging and terrifying!
Furthermore, Williams has created an emotional center in the film that makes viewers interested in the survival of their tormented heroine. Of course, many third-rate characters (rude neighbor, cowardly colleague, sniper leader) are hardly drawn. But spending time developing them takes time away from the real star of the film. Also, in this game they are like dominoes to flip and you don't have to get too attached to them.
In the end, M3GAN came out on top for not only introducing a gripping new slasher to the weird horror sub-genre, but also scaring us deeply before they even existed. Cooper and Johnston have taken a silly concept and destroyed it, just like their awesome Demon Suppression… well, you'll see.
Simply put, if you like horror movies, you should watch M3GAN.
