YouTube Music for Android gets a redesigned Cast menu

[ad_1]

Last updated: May 1st, 2024 at 16:54 UTC+02:00

Google is rolling out a redesigned menu for showing casting options in the latest stable version of the YouTube Music app for Android (version 6.49.53) with a server-side update.

Until now, when you pressed the cast button on the Now Playing screen, the app used to bring up a menu in the center of the display that listed all the devices to which you could cast the content. Once you selected a device, the menu used to show the song’s album art in a large size and the song’s name and album details below that. It also used to give you the play/pause and Stop Casting buttons.

Now when you press the cast button, the app brings up a menu from the bottom of the screen that shows you all the devices to which you can cast the content. This menu is wider and it has rounded edges instead of sharp edges of the old menu. Once you select a device to cast the content to, the menu shows the song’s cover photo in a small size followed by the song’s name and album details. Below that, it displays the volume slider and other devices to which you can cast the content as you can see in the screenshots below.

While the redesigned menu makes good use of space and therefore, looks more sophisticated, it lacks the buttons to play/pause the content or stop casting it. So, if you want to play/pause the song, you have to go back to the Now Playing screen, and to stop casting the content to other devices, you have to select the “This phone” option, which stops casting the content on the other device and starts playing the content on your phone/tablet instead. You can then go to the Now Playing screen and pause the song if that’s what you want.

At the moment, you have to force the app to show the redesigned Cast menu. To do that, force-stop the app and then open it. You should now be able to see the new Cast menu,

YouTube TV on Android introduces new Multiview feature – here’s how to use it

[ad_1]

A couple of months ago, the YouTube TV app on iOS gained Multiview, a feature giving subscribers a way to watch up to four different sports games at once. A company spokesperson at the time told us Android users wouldn’t get the update until later this summer. Well, it seems the platform sped up development because Multiview on YouTube TV for Android devices has recently been spotted rolling out.

All you need to do to receive the feature is run the latest version of the app on your smartphone or tablet. After installing the patch, scroll down while on the Home tab until you see the section “Watch in Multiview”. Then select a group you want to watch. Audio will initially play from the livestream in the upper left corner. You can change the audio source by tapping another stream twice. The first time brings up the Play/Pause button in the middle, and the second makes the switch.

You’ll know you’ve done it correctly if the live stream has a white highlighted border around it. It’s important to mention that double tapping a source while the Play/Pause button is showing lets you expand it to full screen. Similarly, you can hit the Go To option while in a portrait view to jump to a specific game or show.

How to convert YouTube videos to MP4 for free

[ad_1]

The easiest way to convert a YouTube video to an MP4 for free is with an app called 4K Video Downloader for Mac and PC. This tool gives you all kinds of options for converting video and audio from YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Soundcloud, Twitch and more.

If you want to save videos or podcasts to your computer to include in a video of your own, this app is the easiest way to download the highest-quality original.

It has other uses, too. If you’re going on a flight, or if you simply have a slow internet connection, you can use it to download what you want to watch in advance. If you’re privacy-conscious but you still want to watch a TikTok sent to you by a friend, you can download the clip without visiting the website.

Here’s how it works.

How to convert YouTube videos to MP4 for free

4K Video Downloader artwork
4K Video Downloader+ can do it all in one app.
Image: Open Media

First, you need to install the 4K Video Downloader app. On a Mac, installing the app downloads the Intel version automatically, but it’s not the only version available.

If you go to the Downloads page and click the small arrow next to “macOS with Intel Installer,” you’ll see another option to download the “macOS with Apple Silicon Installer.” That’s what I strongly recommend to everyone with a newer Mac, as it’ll run with better performance.

The download page — and also the page that opens automatically when you first launch the app — prompts you to enter an email address, but this isn’t necessary.

Launching and using the app

Click a site to start browsing or click Paste Link.

When you first launch 4K Video Downloader, you’ll see some helpful onboarding screens that teach you the basic functionality. There are a few different ways to download videos:

  1. You can copy a URL and paste it into the app.
  2. You can use the built-in browser to search and download the video all in one.
  3. You can enable Smart Mode to quickly set your preferences for video quality and platform compatibility. Advanced Mode gives you more options for video formatting and subtitles.
  4. Add YouTube channels or playlists and new videos will be converted automatically.

Just paste a URL

Converting a YouTube video to an MP4 from its URL is super easy. Copy the address out of the address bar in your browser, or when someone sends you an iMessage, right-click and click Copy.

In 4K Video Downloader, just click Paste Link. It’ll instantly convert the video.

It supports YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Twitch, Soundcloud, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Naver.tv, BiliBili, Rumble and Likee.

To download an age-restricted video from YouTube, you will have to sign into your Google account first.

Use the built-in browser

Download content directly inside the app.

You can also look up and browse inside the app to download what you want. I clicked the Soundcloud button, found Driftless Pony Club, clicked on a song and clicked the big green Download button.

The browser window will minimize and you can watch the download in progress. Click the browser toolbar to bring it back up again and start another download. The Home button on the left takes you back to the shortcuts.

Download subtitles and change specific settings

Convert YouTube video to MP4
Pick video format, quality, subtitles and more using Advanced Mode.
Screenshot: D. Griffin Jones/Cult of Mac

If you want to convert a YouTube video to MP4 with persnickety choices about the video codec, frame rate or which subtitles to download, uncheck the light bulb toggle switch. This switches from Smart Mode to Advanced Mode.

For downloading subtitles, you can pick any language available in the original video. It’ll download an SRT file alongside the video file. Most video players like VLC and IINA will recognize it with the same file name and turn on subtitles automatically.

Download whole playlists or channels

If you copy a link to a YouTube channel or playlist, click Paste Link to see two options. You can download the entire backlog or subscribe to have new content automatically converted.

Manage your subscriptions from the downloads page. Subscribed playlists and channels have a special icon on the right. Hover over it, click the button and click Remove to unsubscribe.

If you sign into your Google account, you can also access your existing YouTube subscriptions, Watch Later playlist and private videos shared with you.

Clean privacy practices

The Mac App Store has a privacy report card that lets you know if the developer is collecting and selling your personal information. I’m always a little wary about apps that I download outside the App Store, because they don’t need to make the same disclosures.

Skimming through their privacy policy, it seems to be good news. Open Media “does not draw any conclusions about the data subject,” any data collected is kept “only for the period necessary.” In compliance with European regulations, you can always request to have all your personal information deleted.

YouTube Music for Android gets a redesigned comments section

[ad_1]

Last updated: April 3rd, 2024 at 14:44 UTC+02:00

In September 2023, Google added a comments section to YouTube Music. It hasn’t even been a year since then and the company is now updating the comments section in the YouTube Music app for Android and iOS with a new design (via 9To5Google).

Up until now, when you clicked on the comments button on the Now Playing screen, the app used to bring up a panel showing the comments section over the playback screen, which used to obstruct the view of the album art, track information, and playback controls.

Now when you click on the comments section button on the Now Playing screen, the app still brings up a panel showing the comments section but it also shrinks the playback screen into a mini-player and displays it above the comments section. This mini-player shows the song’s name and artist and has play/pause and cast buttons. With the new design, you can take a look at the track information and access basic playback controls even when you are interacting with the comments section, which is very convenient.

Reportedly, Google is rolling out the latest change on Android only on smartphones, not tablets. We haven’t received it on our Galaxy S23 or Galaxy S24+ in India. We are assuming that the company is offering the redesign with an update to the app. So, keep checking for an update to YouTube Music on the Play Store to get it.

YouTube Music for Android gets a redesigned share sheet

[ad_1]

Last updated: April 1st, 2024 at 12:11 UTC+02:00

Google is updating the YouTube Music app for Android with a redesigned share sheet, which looks more organized/sophisticated and takes up much less space on the display compared to the older one (via 9To5Google). The new share sheet design is the same as the one found in the YouTube app for the operating system.

Up until now, when you clicked on the Share button, the app used to bring up a menu that took at least two-thirds of the display vertically. It showed you the option to copy the link to the song as well as all the applications on your phone where you could share the track.

Now, when you click on the Share button, the app brings up a menu that’s much shorter in size. At the top, it has a grid of options, which includes the option to share the song using Nearby Share and four applications where you can share the track. Below that, it gives you the option to copy the link to the song and an option to bring up a list of other applications installed on your device where you can share the song.

We are able to access the redesigned share sheet in the latest stable version of the app (version 6.44.54) on our Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy S24+. Google should be rolling it out in other regions as we speak. So, update YouTube Music on your phone to enjoy the new share sheet. It is also live on YouTube Music for iOS.

Want to skip to the good bit of a video? YouTube is testing a smart AI feature for that

[ad_1]

I’ve been increasingly driven to distraction by YouTube’s ever-more-aggressive delivery of adverts before, during and after videos, which is making it a challenge to even get to the bits of a video that I want to see without having some earnest voice encourage me to trade stocks or go to Dubai. Until now I’ve been too cheap to subscribe to YouTube Premium – but that may soon change.

That’s because YouTube is apparently testing an AI-powered recommendation system that will analyze patterns in viewer behavior to cleverly skip to the most popular parts of a video with just a double tap on a touchscreen.
