Almost a million people around the world have fallen victim to a highly organized fraud campaign, which scammed them out of some $50 million in the past couple of years.
According to a report from SRLabs, a group of cyber-criminals, supported by a wider network of affiliates, were organized into a crime ring dubbed BogusBazaar. This ring automated the creation and rotation of thousands of fake shopping websites – 22,500 domains, to be exact.
Through these shopping sites, the criminals did two things – steal credit card and other payment data, and steal money.
Well-organized group
Stealing credit card information is as straightforward as one can imagine with fake shopping sites – a person would try to purchase something off the site, they would submit their payment information, and never get the item they ordered. PayPal and Stripe data was stolen from the victims in the same manner.
Stealing money worked in a somewhat different way. Some of the victims actually received an item, albeit not the one they ordered, but rather a cheap copy, or a knock-off.
“The operation of fraudulent webshops is a seemingly small but well-organized crime,” Matthias Marx, a security consultant at SRLabs, told The Register. “As each fraud case has a relatively low volume, the fraudsters seem to have managed to evade the attention of the law enforcement authorities despite earning millions.”
The majority of the victims were located in Western Europe, Australia, and America.

The worst part is that the campaign is still ongoing, and is decentralized and automated in a way that makes it difficult for law enforcement to fully eliminate. As soon as one website gets taken down, another one takes its place. The attackers often use expired domains with good standing, making spotting fraud even harder at start.
The majority of the fraudsters seem to be operating out of China.
The internet is filled with scammers and fraudsters, looking to steal people’s money and sensitive information. The best way to stay safe is to always make sure you’re buying from trusted sources and official websites. If you know the shop’s website, type the address in the bar instead of searching for it on Google or other search engines.
If you are being redirected to a website, double check the address and make sure it doesn’t have any weird typos or strange-looking characters.
And finally, always use common sense. If something is too good to be true, it most likely is.
Do you sometimes struggle to maintain focus while you’re working, or find it difficult to unwind and relax at the end of the day? Believe it or not, your iPhone could help with that. Keep reading to learn how.
If you are looking to minimize distractions when you focus on something, or just want to zone out after a hard day’s work, it’s well worth checking out the Background Sounds feature on your iPhone or iPad. Whether you are at home or in a public place, you can play calming sounds with just a few taps on your device to help you concentrate or rest.
In iOS and iPadOS, Apple’s Background Sounds include balanced, bright, and dark noise, as well as natural sounds like ocean, rain, and stream. All of the sounds can be set to play in the background to mask unwanted environmental or external noise, and the sounds mix into or duck under other audio and system sounds, so you don’t have to drown out what’s important to you.
Enable Background Sounds on iPhone and iPad
Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
Tap Accessibility.
Under “Hearing,” tap Audio & Visual.
Tap Background Sounds, then tap the switch to turn on Background Sounds on the next screen.
Tap Sound to choose a sound effect. Choose from Balanced Noise, Bright Noise, Dark Noise, Ocean, Rain, and Stream.
Your device will need to download individual sound effects when you play them for the first time, so make sure you have an internet connection, but after that you can play the background sound wherever you are.
Note that the last screen in the steps optionally lets you set the volume of the sound, and includes an additional option to automatically stop the sound when you lock your device.
Accessibility Shortcut Access
Once you have downloaded the background sounds, you can quickly start and stop the audio via an Accessibility Shortcut. Here’s how to set one up.
Set Up the Accessibility Shortcut
Tap through to Settings ➝ Accessibility.
Select Accessibility Shortcut near the bottom of the menu.
Tap Background Sounds to select it. You can also drag the three lines icon at the far right to change the order in which it appears in the shortcuts menu.
You can triple click your iPhone’s Side button to access the Accessibility Shortcut at any time. Alternatively, you can add an Accessibility Shortcut button to your device’s Control Center in the following way.
Access Accessibility Shortcut
Tap through to Settings ➝ Control Center.
Find Accessibility Shortcuts under the “More Controls” list and then tap the entry to include it in Control Center.
Once that’s done, swipe from the top-right corner of your screen to bring up Control Center, then simply tap Accessibility Shortcut button and then tap Background Sounds to turn the audio on or off.
Background sounds are also available on Macs running macOS Ventura or later. Check out our dedicated how-to article for all the details.
Rumors emerged this week that the Apple Watch 10 would arrive with a more power-efficient OLED display, which offers more control over the screen’s power draw than the Liquid Retina OLED displays used by the best Apple Watches in previous years.
This could place much less demand on the battery than the current screen and might just lead to a longer-lasting battery. For me, that’s the single biggest change Apple could make that would convince me to take the plunge and wear an Apple Watch as my main timepiece.
For context, I’ve worn many watches during my role as Fitness and Wearables Editor, but every time a review unit circulates off my wrist, I have just a few I tend to go back to as my standard picks. If I’m in the middle of an intense training block (at the time of writing, the London marathon is a little over a week away) I’ll wear a Garmin Epix Pro, which can last up to two weeks between charges, or even an Apple Watch Ultra 2 if I’m using an iPhone, which gives me 36 hours – just shy of two days.
If I’m taking things easy – with training largely restricted to yoga, the gym, and the climbing center – I’ll probably revert to my beloved Casio digital watches, such as the one our editor-at-large Lance Ulanoff has been wearing recently. Cheap and cheerful with a timer, alarm, and stopwatch, they also crucially have a seven-year battery life. If I want to track sleep or other metrics, I’ll pair that with one of the best smart rings such as an Oura ring, which likewise lasts a full week between charges.
Notice anything here? It’s all about battery life. While testing the Apple Watch Series 9, I found the 18-hour battery life to be a bugbear compared to the Apple Watch Ultra 2. When testing an Apple Watch that isn’t an Ultra, I’ll often go to bed wearing it, and wake up cursing that my wrist-mounted squircle has transformed from one of the best smartwatches into a useless piece of metal and plastic.
As someone who enjoys running, I use the battery-sucking GPS workout function four to five times a week during a training block, often for long periods, so keeping a spare charger at work has become a necessity during testing.
If something makes you swear more than smile, it isn’t fit for purpose. It’s long past time the Apple Watch had a decent battery upgrade. The OnePlus Watch 2 can reach 100 hours with some clever dual-OS wrangling, and even the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 range, Apple’s nearest Android rival, is now cresting 40 hours. Although the Apple Watch is still the best-selling smartwatch by a huge margin, having a battery performance still stuck at 18 hours simply isn’t good enough in 2024.
Now the Samsung Galaxy Ring is on the horizon, alternative wearable formats are reaching the mainstream, and the era of peak smartwatch may very well be over. Wearable tech is getting slimmer and less obtrusive, and this trend lets them last longer, becoming less of an inconvenience to users.
Health and wellness wearables are also redoubling their focus on sleep: the Galaxy Ring briefing I attended was almost entirely focused on rest and recovery, and Fitbit’s just redesigned the Sleep page on its excellent app. As it stands, Apple can’t compete in this arena, because so many users have to charge their watches overnight.
To remain at the head of the pack, Apple needs to evolve. Bringing the Ultra’s 36-hour battery life to the flagship Apple Watch 10 would be the single biggest quality-of-life change an Apple Watch user could wish for. Every power-saving initiative Apple has implemented in previous years has been plowed right back into powering the watch’s new tricks, such as the Series 9’s double-tap functionality.
This year, I don’t want anything flashy – I want Apple to focus on giving us more time with its watches.
A new version of a known Android banking trojan is making rounds on the internet, stealing sensitive data, and possibly even money, from its victims.
Cybersecurity researchers from NCC Group’s Fox-IT sounded the alarm of a new, upgraded version of the Vultur banking trojan, first spotted in early 2021 but having received a number of important changes and upgrades since then.
While previous versions were being distributed via dropper apps that were smuggled onto the Play Store, this new version uses a combination of smishing and legitimate app abuse. The researchers said that the attackers would first send an SMS message to their victims, warning them of an unauthorized payment transaction and sharing a phone number for the victim to call.
Full takeover
If the victim takes the bait and calls the number, the attacker then persuades them to download a compromised version of the McAfee Security app. While on the surface the app works as intended, in the background it delivers the Brunhilda malware dropper. This dropper drops three payloads, including two APKs and a DEX file which, after obtaining Accessibility Services, establish a connection with the command and control (C2) server, and grant the attackers remote control over the Android device.
For a trojan, Vultur is quite competent. It can record the screen, log keystrokes, and grant the attackers remote access via AlphaVNC and ngrok. Furthermore, it allows the attackers to download and upload files, install apps, delete files, click, scroll, and swipe through the device, and block different apps from running. It can also display custom notifications and disable Keyguard to bypass the lock screen.
Finally, Vultur encrypts its C2 communications to further evade detection.
As usual, the best way to defend against these threats is to use common sense, and only download apps from legitimate, proven repositories.

The best open ear headphones, also known as the best air conduction headphones, are designed to deliver quality sound while keeping you aware of your surroundings. They work by not placing any tech within your ear canal. This means open ear headphones are a solid choice for outdoor runners or anyone else who wants to hear what’s going on in their immediate environment. They’re also a good idea for people who don’t like the feeling of buds or silicone tips in their ear canals.
Open ear headphones aren’t new. But only recently have they become a major focus for a number of audio tech and fitness tech brands, so although the category is emerging, there isn’t a great deal of choice just yet. A few of the earbuds in our guide perform well, but aren’t perfect – they certainly won’t give the best earbuds a run for their money in terms of sound. There are also teething issues with design; open ear buds aren’t anchored in place with an in-ear bud, which means new design choices are being made with earhooks, headphones and even clamps.
Although there may not be many open ear headphones to choose from, we’ve selected several of our top picks below. We’ve had chance to test many of these headphones ourselves, but if you can’t find a link to a full review it’ll be coming soon. So if you’re looking for an alternative to the best running headphones or best bone conduction headphones, then read on to find out which open ear headphones are right for you.
Shokz is known for creating some of the best bone conduction headphones, but the OpenFit buds prove it’s just as adept at air conduction tech. In our review, we said that these earbuds are capable of “delivering quality audio almost as good as in-ear buds” but with plenty of awareness of your surroundings.
Unlike similar designs, the earhooks are soft and flexible, providing a stable fit. This fit wasn’t perfect – especially when I was wearing glasses – but they stayed put throughout most workouts. The Shokz OpenFit are not the cheapest option in this guide, but if you’re looking for a dependable pair of air conduction earbuds that fit well and deliver solid sound, you can’t go wrong here.
Bose is one of the best audio tech brands in the world, so it’s no surprise that its first pair of open ear buds, the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, are seriously impressive. We haven’t had chance to put these buds to the test properly yet. But in our review, we found they tick all of the boxes – but obviously come with a premium Bose price tag to match.
Unlike other buds in this list, the Bose Ultra Open buds hook onto the side of your ear’s helix. The battery cylinder then tucks behind your ear. During our testing, we thought they felt a little wobbly but never fell off – they might just need a bit of getting used to, which we’ll find out in our full review that’s coming soon.
As you’d expect from a pair of Bose buds – even those with an open ear design – the Ultra Open sound great. These truly seem like the best air conduction headphones to beat, but they’re significantly more expensive than rivals so will only appeal to those who can pay premium.
One of the older pairs of buds in our list, the OpenRock Pro from OneOdio have an earhook style, similar to the Shokz OpenFit at the top of the guide and the 1More S50 below. During our testing, we found this design to be comfortable. We even said they’re among the best-fitting workout buds we’ve tested, which is really saying something.
We commented that audio quality isn’t the best here, but will do for most people. They’re our top pick for battery life, which is among the best of the bunch at 19 hours from the buds themselves and 46 hours with the case too. This makes them a great choice if you’re considering open ear buds for more than just working out. These will see you through from commuting, a day at the office and a workout.
The 1More Fit S50 deliver good quality sound, we were impressed with the clarity of voices, bass and volume that they delivered during our testing. We’ve also got a design built for workouts here, thanks to an IPX7 sweat-resistant rating.
However, we felt let down by the fit. Although the earhook design delivered when we tried the Shokz OpenFit – as well as in early tests of the Emeet AirFlow below – we couldn’t achieve a stable and consistent fit with the 1More Fit S50. There’s a chance they’ll fare better for those with biggers ears that don’t wear glasses, however.
They’re cheaper than most rivals on this list, which is why they’re our budget pick. But only consider them if you’re already a fan of an earhook-like design.

Until then, we have high hopes that the Oladance OWS Sports will be our top choice for more intense workouts, running and overall stability. This is thanks to the neckband/headband-style design, which makes them look similar to the best bone conduction headphones.
These sports headphones also boast a high water-resistant rating, 5 hours of battery life, muti-point pairing and a slick, nice-looking design. We’ll let you know if these buds are as good as they sound when we test them.
How to choose the best open ear headphones for you
Air conduction tech and open ear headphones have been around for several years, but only recently have audio tech companies both big and small pumped significant time and energy into releasing open-ear devices.
This means there isn’t a huge amount of choice about which air conduction headphones and open ear buds to buy. It’s not like the best wireless earbuds or best noise cancelling headphones in which most audio brands have at least one pair and there’s a massive range to suit all budgets and preferences.
Having said that, our guide above proves there is some choice depending on what you’re looking for – and your options will only grow as more brands enter this space.
The first thing to consider is whether open ear buds are for you. As you can tell from many of our reviews above, there’s a trade-off here in terms of sound quality and fit for an open ear design, which means you need to care about hearing what’s going on around you.
As always, one of the other major factors to consider is your budget. We don’t have a huge range of choice at present, but there are some cheaper options. Having said that, the cheaper options on this list are the ones we had most fit issues with, like the 1More S50.
You’ll see that, at least at the time of writing, air conduction tech comes in several different form factors. There are devices that stay in place with earhooks that fit around the back of your ear, like the Shokz OpenFit. Then there are those that fit around the outer ear in a different way, take a look at the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, which “clamp” on the side of your ear. Finally, there are devices that look similar to the best bone conduction headphones and they have a band around your neck connecting them and keeping them in place.
These designs aren’t all that common, which means we don’t expect you to immediately know which will suit you. But consider whether you’ve got on well with earhook designs in the past – these can cause problems for those with smaller ears or anyone who wears glasses. And if you’ve tried a pair of bone conduction headphones before, you’ll know whether you like the headband.
Otherwise, it is worth pointing out that you’re taking a gamble on whether the fit of the different buds are right for you. This means if you don’t have money to spare and only want a reliable fit, it might be worth trying some of the best workout headphones or best running headphones. Bone conduction headphones don’t have the same method of conducting sound, pumping it through your temples with transducers rather than blasting sound through the air around your ears, but you may want to give those a go instead.
How we test the best air conduction headphones
We’ve had chance to test several of the best air conduction headphones in this guide. We’ve made it clear which we haven’t had chance to review yet, but rest assured that all of the ones mentioned here will be tested over the next month.
This means we know what to expect from the best air conduction headphones when it comes to key features, design and fit, battery life, audio performance and more.
During our testing, we focused a lot on fit. Open ear headphones face a unique challenge in that they need to stay put on your ear and yet don’t have a snug over-ear design or in-ear bud to keep them in place. Brands have compensated for this with ear hooks, headbands or other methods, but they don’t always suit everyone.
With this in mind, we paid close attention to their fit in a range of scenarios, including working, commuting, walking and working out. We made sure to put all of the headphones above through their paces with several different gym workouts, outdoor runs and exercises given that many are created to appeal to amateur athletes and outdoor runners.
You’re never going to get the kind of immersive sound you’d expect from the best noise cancelling headphones with these devices, but that’s not the point. We were keen to assess the buds for audio quality, checking whether there’s decent sound and clarity on offer, even if it’s not immersive. We also weighed this audio performance up against the amount of ambient noise you can hear and whether each pair of buds made us feel more aware of our surroundings, as they’re designed to do.
Finally, we’re not at the point where one pair of open ear headphones tick all of the boxes like you’ll find in other TechRadar headphone buying guides. But we also considered the whole package and whether some of these buds deserved higher ratings based on handy design choices, like water resistance, longevity, like battery life.
Nanoleaf makes some of the best smart lights around, especially if you like something more creative – and now it’s unveiled Ultra Black Mini Triangles as the newest additions to its Ultra Black Shapes range, as well announcing some exciting Easter offers on its other product ranges.

In February, megafires ripped through the Chilean central coastal hills, killing at least 132 people, injuring hundreds and destroying 7,000 homes. At the time of writing, more than 300 people remain missing.
These wildfires are not a one-off calamity. You only need watch the news to know that wildfires are becoming more frequent and more destructive. Last year, catastrophic fires in Hawaii, Canada and Greece took hundreds of lives and caused widespread destruction. The 2019–20 Black Summer was the most uncontrolled fire season ever recorded in Australia. California’s 2018 Camp Fire was the deadliest ever in the state, and the most expensive natural disaster in the world that year. As a fire scientist at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, I have lost track of how many times I have scrambled to analyse the deadly consequences of cataclysmic fires worldwide.
Countries need to take megafires more seriously and implement urgent programmes to mitigate the associated risks. That’s doesn’t just mean tackling the root causes of climate change. It means more-effective and consistent land- and fire-management policies, greater efforts to conserve native species and more education for local people on how to minimize risks.
Why is Latin America on fire? It’s not just climate change, scientists say
Climate change is a major driver of wildfires. Rising temperatures have increased the frequency, intensity and duration of extreme events such as droughts, heatwaves and high-speed winds, which fuel longer and wilder fires. The past few years have given us a bitter taste of the future of fires on a warming planet. Hotspot regions might face a tenfold increase in fire risk under future global warming.
But it isn’t just global warming that should be blamed, argues a 2022 report by the United Nations Environment Programme (see go.nature.com/3uwv9np) that I helped to author. Climate and land-cover changes, including deforestation, urbanization, mining and use of land for agriculture and pasture, have all increased the likelihood of extreme wildfires over the past decades.
The 2024 Chilean wildfires resulted from a complex interplay between extreme weather conditions and human behaviour, as we found in an attribution study (see go.nature.com/3tjjscy). Since 2010, central-south Chile has seen more frequent and larger wildfires, as well as a prolonged drought within what was the nation’s warmest decade recorded since 1970.
But, as in many other countries, key factors in boosting megafires are poor land management and the growing proximity of flammable vegetation to populated urban and suburban areas. The wildland–urban interface covers only 5% of Chile’s land surface, but is home to 80% of the country’s population — and 60% of its wildfires.
Land-cover changes have homogenized the landscape, and have increased the likelihood of megafires by removing natural fire barriers — native plants — and increasing the number of informal settlements near forests. Pasture and agricultural areas are typical ignition sources. Either accidentally or through negligence or arson, humans were responsible for around 98% of the known causes of Chilean fires between 1985 and 2018.
How record wildfires are harming human health
Worldwide, land management is underused as a means of reducing fire vulnerabilities and exposure. Prescribed burns are not a new wildfire-prevention technique, but they have been marginalized owing to negative public perception. For this to change, the first step would be to implement proper fire-management regulations that are firmly built on the necessity of prescribed burns. Good regulations, appropriate funding and adequate crew training are essential. Climate change has substantially decreased the number of days that provide favourable conditions for prescribed burns.
Prevention and regulation are a must, because once a megafire begins, it is almost impossible to snuff out, even with sophisticated methods. Policies focusing on reactive responses — such as fire suppression — could result in the ‘firefighting trap’, a positive feedback loop in which fire suppression leads to there being more dry fuel in the landscape, which leads to worse fires, requiring more suppression. Breaking this loop requires effective and continuous science–policy interaction.
Another important concern is human behaviour. Governments must pass and enforce laws that discourage people from starting fires when danger is elevated. But laws count for little without cultural change. To change hearts and minds, local governments, non-governmental organizations and companies can foster community engagement in fire prevention through education campaigns, and the media can systematically disseminate information to raise awareness of the consequences of irresponsible practices. Furthermore, fire-management plans should be embedded in local knowledge, and include the needs and concerns of Indigenous communities and smallholder farms.
Megafires are a humanitarian crisis. As a fire scientist, I always end my talks with a call to action: to implement a resilient fire-management strategy. Decelerating global warming isn’t enough. Nations need a holistic approach to fire governance, adjusting prevention, regulation and planning according to each local and ecological context.
