Select iPhones can imitate Google’s handy Circle to Search tool with new shortcut

[ad_1]

A select handful of Pixel and Galaxy smartphones have the exclusive Circle to Search feature. By holding down the home button on one of the models, an overlay will appear “that lets you circle… objects” on screen to identify them through Google Search. We’ve wondered if and when Google plans on widely rolling out Circle to Search to more smartphones. Funnily enough, a similar feature has recently been released, but it’s on iPhone.

It’s called Search Your Screenshot and was created by a group of developers who work on the Google Search app for iOS. Minsang Choi, who is a design manager for Google Lens, states it adds a visual search function to the action button on an iPhone 15 Pro. Pressing the button takes a screenshot of whatever’s on the display and the software proceeds to run a Google Lens scan. After it’s done, search results appear from buttons complete with images, forum posts, and shopping links to the object it detects. Choi says, “It’s basically Circle to Search but faster”.

He has since deleted his post on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) where he initially shared information about the shortcut. We do have the images he posted. They show a settings menu of presumably Choi configuring Search Your Screenshot on an iPhone. The second picture shows the shortcut appearing on the action button’s unique interface with the third image displaying results for a Teenage Engineering computer case.

Ubisoft today announced that Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be available in the App Store starting June 6 for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, as well as iPad Air and iPad Pro models equipped with the M1 chip or newer.

Assassins Creed Mirage
Assassin’s Creed Mirage can now be pre-ordered on the App Store. The game will be free to play for 90 minutes, and users will be able to unlock the full version across compatible iPhone and iPad models with a single $49.99 in-app purchase.

Ubisoft says the iPhone and iPad versions of Assassin’s Creed Mirage offer the same experience as the console version, but with touch-based controls.

The game’s description in the App Store:

In Assassin’s Creed® Mirage, you are Basim, a cunning street thief with nightmarish visions, seeking answers and justice. After an act of deadly retribution, Basim flees Baghdad and joins an ancient organization – The Hidden Ones. As he learns their mysterious rituals and powerful tenets, he will hone his unique abilities, discover his true nature, and come to understand a new Creed – one that will change his fate in ways he never could have imagined.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage was first released for Xbox, PlayStation, and Windows in October.

With the A17 Pro chip, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading, allowing for improved graphics rendering in games. This hardware upgrade has allowed for more AAA games on the iPhone, such as multiple Resident Evil titles and Death Stranding Director’s Cut.

Apple Watch Series 9 Now Available on Apple’s Refurbished Store in Select Countries

[ad_1]

The Apple Watch Series 9 is now available in Apple’s refurbished store in Australia and New Zealand for the first time since the device launched in September. These are the first countries where Apple offers refurbished Series 9 models.

Apple Watch Series 9
Availability will likely extend to Japan and the UK soon, as Apple recently added a grayed-out Apple Watch Series 9 search filter to its refurbished store in those countries. The search filter is only visible on these pages in a desktop browser, and it is possible that Apple will remove them following our report, as it has done in the past.

Apple has yet to begin selling refurbished Apple Watch Ultra 2 models anywhere.

It is unclear if and when refurbished Series 9 and Ultra 2 models will be available in the U.S. due to Apple’s legal battle with health company Masimo. The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) last year banned Apple from importing and selling Apple Watch models with a functioning Blood Oxygen app after it ruled that the feature infringed on Masimo’s patents. Apple recently appealed the decision in a 916-page court filing.

Apple could opt to sell refurbished Series 9 and Ultra 2 models in the U.S. with the Blood Oxygen app deactivated, as it is currently doing for brand new models. Apple would be able to reactivate the app with a watchOS update if its appeal is successful, or if it eventually reaches a settlement with Masimo to end the dispute.

Since the ITC’s ruling applies to the U.S. only, the Blood Oxygen app is still functional on new and refurbished Apple Watch models sold in all other countries.

WhatsApp will finally let you select HD as default image resolution

[ad_1]

Last updated: March 26th, 2024 at 09:12 UTC+01:00

WhatsApp compresses all the images and videos unless you share them as documents. And many people get annoyed by the drop in quality of images and videos shared through WhatsApp. Last year, the app introduced the ability to share HD (actually 4K resolution) quality media, but you have to explicitly select that option. If you are tired of selecting the HD option every time, you might be in for a treat.

WhatsApp to bring the ability to select HD quality as the default resolution setting for sending images and videos

The Meta-owned company is working on a feature that lets you choose the default image and video quality for all your messages. WABetaInfo has found that WhatsApp is testing an option in the app’s Storage And Data settings that lets you choose between ‘Standard’ and ‘HD’ quality for all the images and videos that you share. This feature has been found in the 2.24.5.6 version of WhatsApp for Android.

WhatsApp Android 2.24.5.6 HD Images Quality Settings

After thorough testing is done, WhatsApp could release this feature to all Android users. You can expect to see this option on your Galaxy (or any other Android) device in the coming months.

Right now, when you share images and videos, you have to select the HD option every single time if you want to share higher-quality media. Many normal users don’t even know that this option exists, so many images and videos aren’t even shared in HD quality by default. Once this feature is released the usage of HD quality might increase and it will make it easier to send higher-quality media for those who want to use it.

Jabra Enhance Select 300 Hearing Aids Review: Some of the Best We’ve Tested

[ad_1]

I’ve been covering hearing aids for WIRED for nearly three years now, and I regularly talk to users and prospects about them when I wear them in public. Regardless of what I’m testing, one brand name has consistently and repeatedly popped up during that time: Jabra.

The Danish brand has a long history making a variety of audio gear, but I’ve always associated it mostly with the Bluetooth headset craze of the aughts. The brand made an early entrance into the over-the-counter hearing aid market (via an acquisition), and it hasn’t let up since, releasing new OTC models at a steady clip.

The latest of these is the Jabra Enhance Select 300, the brand’s smallest and most advanced model yet. You wouldn’t really know it just from the look of the aids. These are fairly standard behind-the-ear models that, while quite small (2.64 grams each), don’t offer any obvious surprises. The demure gray chassis sits close to the back of the ear and snakes a silver cable to the ear canal. Each aid carries a single button on its reverse.

Grey rectangular case holding silver hearing aids with a one hand pulling a hearing aid out

Photograph: Jabra Enhance

Jabra front-loads a lot of the purchase process to ensure your aids arrive preconfigured. You can take an online hearing test or, as I did, upload a professional audiogram; either option allows Jabra’s audiologists to tune the product appropriately before it is shipped. The company also asks you to take a lengthy medical questionnaire to rule out any hearing-related medical problems before sending out the product. Eventually, the digital chatter can get a little tiresome: During the shopping process, Jabra even asks about your credit rating and suggests a monthly payment plan for its lowest-priced product if you say your credit is trash. Once you do place an order, Jabra barrages you with introductory emails and invites you to schedule an orientation with an audiologist to walk you through the hardware and the app. Admittedly, some of this is helpful—especially the Zoom orientation—but Jabra could stand to pump the breaks on the auto-mailer a bit.

There’s plenty to explore once your hearing aids arrive. For example, if you aren’t sure which type of ear tips are best for you, you’ll have ample room to experiment, because the company sends seven different baggies of them to try out, including open, closed, and tulip-style tips in a multitude of sizes. I counted 70 different tips in total, and I have no doubt that Jabra would happily send more if I asked.

With tips installed (I usually test with open tips), I found that getting the aids situated on my ears was made a bit easier thanks to a pinging sound that plays—Jabra calls it Smart Start—while you are guiding the receivers into your ear canal. Controls are as basic as they come: the button on the right aid turns the volume up for both aids, the one on the left turns volume down, and either one cycles through the programs—four in total—if you hold it down for a couple of seconds.

Naturally you’ll get a lot more out of the hearing aids if you connect your set to a mobile app, and Jabra actually has two apps to choose from. The Enhance Pro app comes up first in the app store, but the Enhance Select app is newer. They work about the same way, but since the Enhance Select is more recent I’ll write mostly about it. Primarily you’ll use the app to move among the four modes—All Around, Restaurant, Music, and Outdoor—all of which are self-explanatory. Each mode has extra options associated with it; for most you can select between “noise filter” to mute ambient sounds or “speech clarity” to boost conversational volume. These can be further customized thanks to three equalizer sliders corresponding to bass, middle, and treble frequencies. Volume can be set globally or individually per ear in the app as well. Of special note: Any customizations you make to programs aside from the All Around mode are reset to defaults once the hearing aids are put back into the charging case.

How to select the right AI model for your needs

how to choose the right AI foundation model

When embarking on a new generative AI project, one of the most crucial decisions you’ll face is selecting the appropriate AI foundation model. This choice is far from trivial; it’s a decision that will have a significant impact on the success of your project. The model you choose must not only be capable of meeting your specific needs but also fit within your budget and align with your organization’s risk management strategies.

To start, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of what you want to achieve with your AI project. Whether you’re looking to create lifelike images, generate text, or produce synthetic speech, the nature of your task will guide you towards the right type of model. It’s important to consider the complexity of the task and the level of quality you expect from the output. Having a clear goal in mind is the first step towards making an informed decision.

Once you’ve defined your use case, the next step is to explore the various AI foundation models available. These models come in different sizes and are designed to handle various tasks. Some are specialized for specific functions, while others are more versatile. It’s important to include models that have been successful in tasks similar to yours in your consideration set.

Selecting the right AI Foundation Model

Here are some other articles you may find of interest on the subject of selecting the right AI foundation model for your needs :

After identifying potential models, you need to examine their characteristics closely. Larger models may be able to handle more complex tasks, but they also come with higher costs and greater computational requirements. You’ll need to weigh their performance capabilities against your budget constraints. It’s also important to consider the risks associated with each model, such as potential biases or data privacy concerns.

The next step is to test the models you’ve shortlisted to see how they perform with your specific data and within your operational context. It’s crucial that the model you choose can be integrated smoothly into your existing systems and workflows. This practical testing phase is vital to ensure that the model you select will work harmoniously with your operations.

During the testing phase, you should focus on evaluating the accuracy, reliability, and processing speed of each model. Accuracy is critical for the credibility of the output, while reliability ensures consistent performance. Processing speed is especially important for applications where time is of the essence. These performance metrics will help you narrow down your choices.

Another important consideration is how you plan to deploy your chosen model. You’ll need to decide whether to use public cloud services, which offer scalability and accessibility, or opt for on-premise deployment, which provides more control and security. The decision will largely depend on the nature of your application, especially if it involves handling sensitive data.

How to choose the correct AI model for your business

Choosing the right AI foundation model is a multifaceted process that involves understanding your project’s specific requirements, evaluating the capabilities of various models, and considering the operational context in which the model will be deployed. This guide synthesizes the provided reference material and integrates additional insights to offer a structured approach to selecting an AI foundation model.

1. Define Your Project Goals and Use Case

The first step in selecting an AI foundation model is to have a clear understanding of what you aim to achieve with your project. Whether your objective is to generate text, create images, or produce synthetic speech, the nature of your task will significantly influence the type of model that best suits your needs. Consider the complexity of the task and the level of output quality you require. A well-defined goal will serve as a guiding light throughout the selection process.

2. Identify Model Options

Begin by exploring the various AI foundation models available, paying attention to models that have demonstrated success in tasks similar to yours. Foundation models vary greatly in size, specialization, and versatility. Some models are designed with a focus on specific functions, while others offer more general capabilities. This exploration phase should include a review of model documentation, such as model cards, which provide essential information on the model’s training data, architecture, and intended use cases.

3. Evaluate Model Characteristics

After identifying potential models, assess their characteristics in detail. This evaluation should consider the model’s size, as larger models often handle complex tasks more effectively but come with higher computational costs and requirements. Key factors to evaluate include:

  • Performance capabilities: How well does the model perform tasks similar to yours?
  • Costs: Both in terms of computational resources and financial expenses.
  • Risks: Including potential biases, data privacy concerns, and ethical considerations.
  • Deployment options: Whether the model supports deployment in cloud environments, on-premise, or both, depending on your needs for control and security.

4. Conduct Practical Testing

Testing the models with your specific data and in your operational context is crucial. This step ensures that the chosen model can be integrated into your existing systems and workflows seamlessly. During testing, focus on evaluating the model’s accuracy, reliability, and processing speed. These metrics are vital for determining the model’s practicality in your use case.

5. Deployment Considerations

Decide on the deployment method that best suits your project. Cloud services offer scalability and ease of access, while on-premise deployment provides more control over security and data privacy. The choice here will largely depend on the nature of your application, especially if it involves sensitive data. Also, consider the flexibility and scalability of the deployment option to accommodate future growth or changes in requirements.

6. Use a Multi-Model Strategy if Necessary

For organizations with a range of different use cases, a single model might not be sufficient. In such cases, a multi-model strategy can be beneficial. This approach allows you to leverage the strengths of various models for different tasks, providing a more flexible and robust solution.

Choosing the right AI foundation model is a complex process that requires a careful analysis of your project’s needs and a thorough examination of the potential models’ characteristics and performance. By following a structured approach, you can select a model that not only meets your current requirements but also positions you well for future developments in the fast-evolving field of generative AI. This decision is not just about solving a current problem; it’s about setting up your project for long-term success in an area that continues to grow and change at a rapid pace.
