I just saw what Half-Life 2 should look like in 2024, and I’ve changed my mind about Nvidia’s RTX Remix tool

In a darkened room at Nvidia’s ‘Future of Gaming’ showcase at a fancy London hotel earlier this week, I was ushered before a bank of computer screens showing live gameplay from a very exciting game: Valve’s Half-Life 2.

Alright, HL2 isn’t a new game – in fact, it turns 20 this year! – but it’s still a timeless classic that has topped many a list of the best PC games. And while Valve will probably never release Half-Life 3, the mega-hit second game still has plenty of life left in it, thanks to Nvidia’s incredibly clever RTX Remix tool.

Announced way back in September 2022 at Nvidia’s GTC showcase, RTX Remix is an AI-powered tool for remastering old 3D games with updated graphics and fancy modern features like ray tracing. Remix entered open beta earlier this year, and is primarily targeted at modders looking to visually upgrade their favorite games; it’s built on Nvidia’s AI-focused ‘Omniverse’ platform, offering a comprehensive box of tricks for making the remaster process faster and easier than ever before.

Nvidia worked with official developers to create a showcase for Remix in Portal with RTX, a shiny new remaster of the legendary 2007 puzzle game, but Half-Life 2 RTX is a passion project being produced by modders with Nvidia providing some background support. And can I be honest? It looks f*cking awesome.

Spotify’s rumored remix feature could completely change how we listen to music

Spotify is reportedly working on adding remixing tools to its streaming service, giving users a way to reimagine their favorite tracks. 

The news comes from The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) whose sources state people will be able to “speed up, mash-up, and otherwise edit songs” however they want. The article explains that one of the purported additions is a playback feature for controlling how fast or how slow a track plays. When you’re finished with a remix, you can then share it with other Spotify users, but not to third-party platforms or social media. There are licensing agreements in place that will prevent people from sharing their creations.

Google has announced that it is launching a new tool for YouTube Shorts that allows you to remix music videos into your YouTube Shorts videos, you will be able to incorporate sounds from the videos and use them as a background for your Short and more.

Picture this… it’s Friday morning and you wake up with a surprise new track from your favorite artist, Maggie Rogers! That Sunday, you’re watching the big game with your friends and all of a sudden, Beyoncé drops two new tracks from her forthcoming album, TEXAS HOLD ‘EM and 16 CARRIAGES. Fast forward a few days and newly minted GRAMMY® winner KAROL G drops Contigo, a love anthem featuring Tiesto just in time for Valentine’s Day. In every case, what is the first thing you do?? Immediately open the YouTube app to watch the official music videos, visualizers, and Shorts!

But it’s not enough to just watch the video – you want to join in on the building hype around the songs and be part of these music movements. And with remixing on YouTube Shorts, now you can, right from the start.

Here’s how: Directly from the video on YouTube, tap “Remix” to choose from four options to remix: Sound, Green Screen, Cut and Collab. Pick one or try them all in different Shorts – the creative possibilities are endless:

  • Sound: Take just the sound from the video and use it in your Short, making a perfect soundtrack for your upcoming trip to Nashville that happens to be this weekend.
  • Collab: Create a Short right alongside the video, so you and your friends can do the choreography side-by-side with the artist.
  • Green Screen: Use the video as the background to your Short, so you can film your realtime reaction to your very first listen.
  • Cut: Can’t get over a specific scene from a music video? Cut that 5 second clip and add it to your Short so you can relive it as often as you like.

This groundbreaking development is a result of a multi-year collaboration between the Asahi Linux project and the Fedora Project, two significant players in the open-source community.
