Samsung releases One UI 6.1 to Galaxy Tab S8 series

Samsung started rolling out One UI 6.1 to the company’s tablets in March with the Galaxy Tab S9 series. Now, almost one and a half months later, the South Korean tech giant is expanding the new UI to the Galaxy Tab S8 series. That’s right. Samsung has released One UI 6.1 for Galaxy Tab S8, Tab S8+, and Tab S8 Ultra.

Currently, Samsung is rolling out One UI 6.1 to the Galaxy Tab S8 series in Europe, and the company is pushing the update only to the Wi-Fi-only variants of the three tablets. The update carrying One UI 6.1 changes the firmware version of the Galaxy Tab S8, Tab S8+, and Tab S8 Ultra to X900XXU6CXE2, X800XXU6CXE2, and X700XXU6CXE2 respectively.

If you live in Europe but your Galaxy Tab S8 hasn’t notified you about the update, you can check for it manually by going to Settings » Software update » Download and install. If you don’t see an update, it means that the update hasn’t become available in your country or for your device yet and you’ll have to wait for a few more days for the update to arrive.

One UI 6.1 is based on Android 14 and it brings many new features, including Galaxy AI, which is a suite of AI-powered features that should come pretty handy to you in day-to-day usage, new image editing capabilities, and UI customization options. iTunes movie releases catch up with DVDs: Today in Apple history

May 1: Today in Apple history: iTunes begins selling digital movies on same day as DVD release May 1, 2008: The iTunes Store takes a gigantic step toward cinematic relevancy, selling new movies on the day of their DVD releases for the very first time.

“We’re thrilled to bring iTunes Store customers new films for purchase day-and-date with the DVD release,” says Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes, in a press release. “We think movie fans will love being able to buy their favorites from major and independent studios.”

Movies out that week include Cloverfield, Juno, Alvin and the Chipmunks and American Gangster.

iTunes Store legitimizes digital distribution

Syncing iTunes and DVD movie releases addressed one of the few problems digital distribution still faced when compared to physical media in the early years of the 21st century. With the delay now a thing of the past, iTunes sold new movies for $14.99 each. Older catalog titles cost $9.99. Initially, the iTunes movies deal only applied to the United States, although it later expanded to other countries.

While it seems like a footnote in tech history in an era where Netflix, Apple TV+ and other streaming services have so thoroughly remade the content-distribution process, at the time it was a big deal. The iTunes Store was only 5 years old, having opened its digital doors in April 2003.

The ability to download videos through iTunes came in October 2005 with the launch of iTunes 6.0. At first, Apple offered just a few thousand music videos, Pixar short films, and a selection of hit TV shows for $1.99 each. It later expanded to offer movies.

iTunes movie sales come of age

With the May 2008 announcement about day-and-date movie releases, the iTunes Store caught up with DVDs in terms of offering the latest blockbusters on demand. At the time, YouTube was still in its infancy, and Netflix was known predominantly for mailing out rental DVDs rather than streaming.

The iTunes Store’s big move marked an important milestone in legitimizing digital distribution. It also once again ensured that Apple existed on the cutting edge of technology and culture.

In the early 2000s, Apple made a name for itself as a video provider by building the place to download the latest movie trailers in the highest possible quality. Being able to promise day-and-date movie releases on iTunes further fueled Apple’s Hollywood ambitions.

Today, Apple has gone one step further. Apple TV+ showcases Apple’s goals when it comes to original content. And, just as Netflix starts to falter in the face of growing competition, Apple TV+ is coming on strong.

Apple Releases New Firmware for USB-C Apple Pencil

Apple today released a firmware update for the USB-C Apple Pencil that came out last year. The new firmware has a version number of 10M6060, up from 10M5164. On device, the updated firmware version number will be 37377.37377.16.0.

There is no word on what features, fixes, or updates might be included in the new firmware, and Apple does not offer release notes for ‌Apple Pencil‌ software releases.

The USB-C ‌Apple Pencil‌ is nearly identical in design to the ‌Apple Pencil‌ 2, but it is shorter and has a hidden USB-C port for charging and pairing. It cannot wirelessly charge, and it lacks some of the features available with the more expensive ‌Apple Pencil‌ models such as pressure sensitivity.

Apple does not have an established procedure for updating ‌Apple Pencil‌ hardware, but in the case of the USB-C ‌Apple Pencil‌, connecting it to an iPad with a USB-C cable and powering on the ‌iPad‌ should be enough to spur the update to download.

Apple Releases Open Source AI Models That Run On-Device

Apple today released several open source large language models (LLMs) that are designed to run on-device rather than through cloud servers. Called OpenELM (Open-source Efficient Language Models), the LLMs are available on the Hugging Face Hub, a community for sharing AI code.

As outlined in a white paper [PDF], there are eight total OpenELM models, four of which were pre-trained using the CoreNet library, and four instruction tuned models. Apple uses a layer-wise scaling strategy that is aimed at improving accuracy and efficiency.

Apple provided code, training logs, and multiple versions rather than just the final trained model, and the researchers behind the project hope that it will lead to faster progress and “more trustworthy results” in the natural language AI field.

OpenELM, a state-of-the-art open language model. OpenELM uses a layer-wise scaling strategy to efficiently allocate parameters within each layer of the transformer model, leading to enhanced accuracy. For example, with a parameter budget of approximately one billion parameters, OpenELM exhibits a 2.36% improvement in accuracy compared to OLMo while requiring 2x fewer pre-training tokens.

Diverging from prior practices that only provide model weights and inference code, and pre-train on private datasets, our release includes the complete framework for training and evaluation of the language model on publicly available datasets, including training logs, multiple checkpoints, and pre-training configurations.

Apple says that it is releasing the OpenELM models to “empower and enrich the open research community” with stage-of-the-art language models. Sharing open source models gives researchers a way to investigate risks and data and model biases. Developers and companies are able to use the models as-is or make modifications.

The open sharing of information has become an important tool for Apple to recruit top engineers, scientists, and experts because it provides opportunities for research papers that would not normally have been able to be published under Apple’s secretive policies.

Apple has not yet brought these kinds of AI capabilities to its devices, but iOS 18 is expected to include a number of new AI features, and rumors suggest that Apple is planning to run its large language models on-device for privacy purposes.

Apple Releases Third Public Beta of iOS 17.5

Apple today seeded the third betas of upcoming iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 updates to public beta testers, allowing non-developers to test the software ahead of its release. The second public iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 betas come a week after Apple released the second betas for public beta testers, and a day after the software was made available to developers.

Public beta testers can get the beta by opening up the Settings app, going to the Software Update section, tapping on the “Beta Updates” option, and toggling on the iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 Public Beta. Signing up on Apple’s beta testing website is required.

iOS 17.5 is limited on new outward-facing features, focusing primarily on changes in the European Union. App developers in the EU are now able to add their iPhone apps to their website, so that users can download them directly without having to use the App Store.

To offer an app for download from a website in the European Union, developers need to meet specific criteria. Developers need to be a member of the Apple Developer Program for two continuous years or more and must have an app with more than one million first installs on iOS in the European Union in the prior year. Other requirements include submitting to Apple’s notarization process and publishing transparent data collection policies.

This feature is limited to the European Union due to the Digital Markets Act and is not available to all users.

iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 also have updates to mobile device management and there are code changes suggesting Battery Health functionality could come to the new iPads and that Apple will soon add alerts for third-party item trackers.

Roku releases its line of premium-ish TVs with Mini LED backlighting

Roku has released a line of TVs after first . These televisions are packed with tech, with the standout feature being Mini LED backlighting for better brightness and contrast. The 4K TVs also boast QLED panels, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and a responsive refresh rate of 120Hz. The company’s calling them the “ultimate TVs” for streaming.

To that end, the quad-core processor should allow for snappier menu navigation and for apps to launch quickly, so you can spend less time waiting on a load screen and more time binging Hulu’s Shogun while scarfing down a big bowl of popcorn. They’re also Wi-Fi 6 capable, which comes in handy when streaming 4K content.

On the audio side of things, the Pro Series models include side-firing Dolby Atmos speakers for a “wide, cinematic sound.” The TVs integrate nicely with wireless soundbars, speakers and subwoofers, in addition to wired variants. Each model also features Bluetooth for connecting wireless headphones, to prevent spoilers from seeping into every corner of the house. They come with a refreshed remote control that includes motion-activated backlit buttons, USB-C charging and new shortcut options.

The Pro Series TVs feature a new neural processing unit (NPU) that allows for some nifty OS features. Smart Picture Max uses AI to automatically adjust the best picture mode for a particular piece of content, refining the color, sharpness and motion as required. This carries over to brightness, which also automatically adjusts depending on room lighting.

While Smart Picture Max might be tied to the Pro Series line of TVs, due to the updated NPU, there are more OS features coming to all Roku panels. The company’s televisions will soon get something called Backdrops, which are basically just fancy screensavers pulled from a wide catalog of popular artwork or via uploaded images. This won’t exactly turn a Roku into a , but it’s a start.

Roku TVs are also getting deep integration with IMDB in a forthcoming OS update. This will provide data sourced from the site as you scroll through potential shows and movies to watch. Finally, the mobile app is receiving a comprehensive upgrade, complete with a streamlined design, better search and new content categories.

The Pro Series line is available now from Best Buy, Amazon and Walmart. Prices start at $900 for the 55-inch model and rise up to $1,700 for the chunky 75-inch version. There’s also a wall-mount kit available for $100.
