Bold as that idea might sound, there’s evidence that Pentax is onto something. With the viral hype around the sold-out-everywhere Fujifilm X100V, interest in retro-style cameras has never been higher.

[ad_1]

Updating to macOS Sonoma 14.4 is breaking the functionality of some USB hubs, according to reports across the web – though it’s unclear how widespread the problem is, or which particular peripherals are affected.

The heads-up first came via AppleInsider readers, but there’s also some discussion on Reddit, Apple support forums, and MacRumors. So far, it appears to be just USB hubs built into monitors affected by the bug, including models from Dell, Samsung, and Gigabyte.

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro review: Samsung’s MacBook killer gets Intel’s latest CPU

[ad_1]

Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro: Two-minute review

If you like the look of Apple‘s MacBooks but prefer or simply require the Windows ecosystem, well, you can do a lot worse than the new Samsung Galaxy Book4 Pro. Like its predecessor, the very similar Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro, it owes its overall look and feel to the MacBook.

Thanks to its sleek wedge-shaped chassis, it’s most similar to Apple’s now defunct MacBook M1 Air in terms of design. But for features and performance it probably falls somewhere in between the newer and boxier MacBook Air 13-inch (M3) and the base model MacBook Pro 14-inch.

How to get the latest HomePod 17.4 software update

[ad_1]

Your HomePod is a lot more than a simple speaker — it’s a whole computer. And like any computer it has an operating system that needs occasional updates. Here’s how to make sure your Apple smart speaker has the software version released on Tuesday.

Version 17.4 makes it easier to play media by learning your preferred service.

If you depend on automatic updates, it’s possible your smart speaker hasn’t yet installed the update. Here’s how to do so manually.

A bit of background on HomePod Software

Apple offers macOS, iOS, tvOS and more. You might think the operating system for HomePod has a similar name. Internally, Apple employees call it audioOS, but that name is never used publicly. For everyone else, it’s “HomePod Software.”

It’s apparently a variation of Apple TV’s tvOS that’s been specially modified for this smart speaker. This makes sense — both are focused on multimedia playback, support Siri, and don’t have to worry about cellular-wireless connections.

And new HomePod Software versions come out when Apple TV is updated. (iPhone and iPad updates are usually introduced at the same time, but not always. It didn’t happen this time, for example.) And the version numbers are generally in lockstep. With tvOS 17.4 launching on March 5, it’s also time for a HomePod update.

What is new in HomePod software 17.4

To be current, your Apple smart speaker should be on HomePod Software Version 17.4. This is true whether you own an original HomePod, HomePod 2 or HomePod mini. The previous version is 17.3 from January.

Apple’s release notes describes the new feature, and well as promising bug fixes:

“This update enables Siri to learn your preferred media service, so you no longer need to include the name of the media app in your request. This update also includes performance and stability improvements.”

A better audio experience is always welcome.

How to update your HomePod’s software

You have the option to wait for the HomePod to automatically update itself, but Apple waits a surprising amount of time to start pushing new versions out to users. You can be sure your device has the latest version in just a few steps.

  1. Open the Home application on your iPhone
  2. Tap on the button for the Home tab in the lower left corner of the screen.
  3. Tap the menu button in the upper right corner of the screen, than select Home Settings from the resulting pop-up window.
  4. Scroll down to Software Update and tap on it.

To check to see if your device has automatically updated, tap on Updated Recently and you’ll get a description of the last version released.

But if you aren‘t caught up, you’ll see an Update Available message instead. There’ll be an Update All button next to this. Press it to see what the new version is and start the installation process.

If you know there’s a new version out but the Home app doesn’t show it, you need to reboot your HomePod. Do this the old-fashioned way: unplug it then plug it back in. Wait a few minutes for the reboot then look again for the update.

Set HomePod to (not) update automatically

By default, your smart speaker is set to automatically install the latest HomePod Software. If you don’t want to tinker with updating this device, you never have to think about it again.

Just be aware that automatic updates don’t start immediately. Based on personal experience, it can be a few days after the software release before your device gets the update. If you’re someone who likes to be sure you’re running the latest software on all your devices, you can always go in and request an immediate update by following the steps above. The best time to check is right after every tvOS update gets released.

Or there’s the exact opposite scenario. If you are happy with your HomePod now and don’t want to take the chance that a bad software update will muck it up, you can turn off automatic updates. It’s easy.

  1. Open the Home application on your iPhone
  2. Tap on the button for the Home tab in the lower left corner of the screen.
  3. Tap the menu button in the upper right corner of the screen, then select Home Settings from the resulting pop-up window.
  4. Scroll down to Software Update and tap on it
  5. In the Automatic Updates section of the screen, toggle off the switch next to HomePod.
Turn off automatic HomePod software updates
You can turn on or off automatic HomePod software updates with a simple toggle switch.

You might also consider doing this for Other Accessories that are updated from the Home application.

Just don’t forget you did this. By toggling off automatic updates, you’ll never receive another one until you manually request it. You might be shutting yourself off from useful features coming in the future.

‘Constellation’ space-thriller becomes latest hit for Apple TV+

[ad_1]

Add Constellation to the lengthy list of Apple TV+ shows that are stand-out hits. The new sci-fi mystery horror series sits near the tops of popularity charts of two different ratings services, and has ever since the premiere in February.

Masters of the Air remains popular, too. As do the historical dramas Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon. That puts all four of these series/films ahead of almost all the content on any streaming service.

Constellation combines sci-fi, mystery and horror

In Constellation, an astronaut returns to Earth after a disastrous mission to find parts of her life missing, and it appears a horrifying conspiracy may be to blame.

Apple calls the show an “action-packed space adventure,” but it’s more of a sci-fi horror mystery. The series is “an exploration of the dark edges of human psychology, and one woman’s desperate quest to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel and recover all that she has lost,” according to Apple.

Whatever the mix of genres, Constellation pulls in a big audience. The series is No. 3 on JustWatch‘s list of top streaming shows for the week ending March 3. And it’s at
No. 4 on ReelGood’s list of Top 10 TV shows on streaming during the week ending March 6. The series has been on both lists since it launched February 21.

Estimates from companies like JustWatch and Reelgood are necessary because streaming services rarely reveal how many people watch their offerings.

The first five episodes of Constellation are ready to watch now on Apple TV+. The finale comes next week.

Masters of the Air stays popular

The Apple TV+ WWII drama Masters of the Air continues to draw in a big audience. The series stays on the popularity charts week after week.

It is an in-depth look at the “bomber boys” in the U.S. Army Air Force squadrons that took the war to Hitler via brutal and harrowingly dangerous bombing campaigns through skies filled with exploding flak and increasingly deadly Nazi fighter planes.

There’s clearly an audience for this type of show. ReelGood puts the historical drama at No. 9 on its list of most popular TV shows on streaming last week. And it sits at No. 8 on JustWatch‘s list of top streaming shows.

The first eight episodes of Masters of the Air are available to watch now on Apple TV+. The finale premieres Friday, March 15.

Napoleon storms onto the popularity charts

Napoleon, a historical epic from director Ridley Scott, began streaming on Apple TV+ on March 1 and plenty of viewers have since tuned in to stream it.

The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte, the French emperor who conquered much of Europe. It details the tyrant’s ruthless rise to power and his obsessive love for his wife, Empress Josephine.

The Oscars mostly snubbed the film, but it is nevertheless pulling in an audience. For the most recent week, JustWatch puts it at No. 5 on its list of most popular streaming movies and ReelGood had it at No. 6.

Napoleon is ready for Apple TV+ subscribers to watch now.

Killers of the Flower Moon is just as popular

Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon has been drawing a crowd of viewers since it hit the Apple TV+ streaming service in mid January, and that continues.

The historical crime drama scored ten Oscar nominations — including for Best Picture —  which surely helped keep it on the top ten lists of popular films. For the most recent week, JustWatch puts it at No. 7 and ReelGood had it at No. 8.

Killers of the Flower Moon is available to stream now.

Watch now on Apple TV+

Watching Constellation or any of these other series or films comes with a subscription to Apple TV+. The service is $9.99 per month with a seven-day free trial. You can also get it via any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle.

And Apple’s streaming video service also includes much more, of course. There are comedies, musicals, children’s shows, nature documentaries, etc.

ChatGPT-4 Turbo performance tested after latest updates

How does ChatGPT-4 Turbo perform after the latest updates from OpenAI

Following on from the news released today by OpenAI, regarding updates it has made to its ChatGPT API, pricing structure and the release of new embedding models. AI enthusiast and developer All About AI has started testing out the new ChatGPT-4 Turbo AI model to check its performance after the update.

If you have been one of those  developers who’s been grappling with ChatGPT responses when it just sometimes just doesn’t seem to get it right. You will be pleased to know that the latest updates released by OpenAI should fix these issues for users of GPT-4 Turbo.  The updates released by OpenAI are in direct response to user feedback, which has been a driving force behind the AI’s evolution. It’s a clear sign that the developers are listening and are committed to improving the tool to better serve its users. OpenAI explains a little more about the new models :

“We are releasing new models, reducing prices for GPT-3.5 Turbo, and introducing new ways for developers to manage API keys and understand API usage. The new models include:”

  • Two new embedding models
  • An updated GPT-4 Turbo preview model
  • An updated GPT-3.5 Turbo model
  • An updated text moderation model

“We are introducing two new embedding models: a smaller and highly efficient text-embedding-3-small model, and a larger and more powerful text-embedding-3-large model. An embedding is a sequence of numbers that represents the concepts within content such as natural language or code. Embeddings make it easy for machine learning models and other algorithms to understand the relationships between content and to perform tasks like clustering or retrieval. They power applications like knowledge retrieval in both ChatGPT and the Assistants API, and many retrieval augmented generation (RAG) developer tools.”

In the early stages of testing the new update, the results are promising. The latest ChatGPT updates seems to be delivering full answers right from the get-go. This means a smoother experience for you, with less time spent trying to fill in the gaps left by the AI. It’s a step toward a more seamless integration of AI assistance, potentially saving you time and frustration.

ChatGPT-4 Turbo performance tested

But there’s a catch. While the API version of GPT-4 Turbo is showing improvements, it’s not yet certain if these enhancements will be consistent across the board, including the browser version that many rely on. Consistency is crucial for a tool that’s meant to be dependable, no matter where or how you’re using it.

Here are some other articles you may find of interest on the subject of OpenAI

The true test of the update’s success will come from the users themselves. Your hands-on trials and the collective feedback from the community will be the ultimate measure of how much the AI has advanced. This input is not only valuable for assessing the current update but also for shaping the future development of GPT-4 Turbo.

Looking ahead, there’s anticipation on the applications that will be possible thanks to OpenAI’s release of its new embeddings model. This model is at the heart of how the AI understands language, turning words and phrases into numbers that the machine can interpret. The upcoming review will reveal how these changes affect the AI’s performance, particularly in coding tasks, which could be a significant factor in the tool’s overall effectiveness.

The initial response to the updated GPT-4 Turbo is one of cautious optimism. The improvements are noticeable, but the full extent of their impact, especially on the browser version, remains to be seen. As users continue to work with the AI and provide feedback, and as we await for more feedback on the ChatGPT embeddings model, the future of GPT-4 Turbo is looking stronger. Stay tuned for more developments as we continue to explore the capabilities of OpenAI’s AI model and what it means for the world and its users.
