A Gatchapon in Japan has been discovered which dispenses Intel CPUs with an asking price of as little as 500 Yen ($3) with mixed results.

The video showcases one curious user on a visit to PC Ones, a computing store located in Osaka, Japan. For just 500 Yen, you’re able to crank the handle and instead of a plastic toy, out will pop an Intel processor which may be fully functioning.

Now, as you may expect, you’re not exactly going to pop in a couple of dollars and receive one of the best processors on the market. The clip showcases that instead of the plastic orb was the Intel Core i7-8700 which is built on the LGA 1151 socket and was released back in 2017.

Short of being a novelty, most surprising is the fact that the older i7 processor actually works as the lucky recipient was able to power it on in a makeshift test rig and boot up to the BIOS. You can’t really ask for much more out of a CPU when you’re spending less than the price of a cup of coffee on one.

After some troubleshooting, they were able to install Windows 10 and then engage in some synthetic benchmarking through Cinebench R23 which showed the chip working in a more hampered capacity. While the CPU has six cores and 12 threads, the Task Manager screenshot revealed only five cores to be operational with 10 threads in use, likely from some pre-existing damage.

More inventive ways to recycle hardware

While this Gatchapon isn’t the only quirky vending machine in Japan, or the region for that matter, it goes to show a creative way to dispose of older hardware without just resorting in a landfill.

It’s not known exactly which chipsets are available in the dispenser, but we’re willing to bet that an older i7 or i9 are at the the upper echelon of what’s inside. Chances are, when you crank the handle, you could receive an ancient chipset that has no functionality.

But that’s what Gatchapon is all about, after all. Put in a couple of dollars and you never know what you could win. If you ever find yourself cash-strapped for your next upgrade and you just so happen to be in Japan, you could win yourself a processor which normally sells for around the $200 mark, not too bad a gamble at all.

This CPU capsule machine is an exception to what we generally see happen to old hardware which is thrown away, though, and gamifying old gear could be a way to cut down on the amount of silicon we see slung out, especially if there’s any chance it could keep on ticking over inside a budget build. US retailers like MicroCenter could learn a thing or two from this operation.

Intel has launched a new AI processor series for the edge, promising industrial-class deep learning inference. The new ‘Amston Lake’ Atom x7000RE chips offer up to double the cores and twice the higher graphics base frequency as the previous x6000RE series, all neatly packed within a 6W–12W BGA package.

The x7000RE series packs more performance into a smaller footprint. Boasting up to eight E-cores it supports LPDDR5/DDR5/DDR4 memory and up to nine PCIe 3.0 lanes, delivering robust multitasking capabilities.

Intel says its new processors are designed to withstand challenging conditions, enduring extreme temperature variations, shock, and vibration, and to operate in hard-to-reach locations. They offer 2x SATA Gen 3.2 ports, up to 4x USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, a USB Type-C port, 2.5GbE Ethernet connection, along with Intel Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 5G platform capabilities.

Embedded, industrial, and communication

The x7000RE series consists of four SKUs, all suitable for embedded, industrial, and communication use under extended temperature conditions. The x7211RE and x7213RE have 2 cores and relatively lower base frequencies, while the x7433RE has 4 cores, and the x7835RE has 8 cores with higher base frequencies.

All four SKUs support a GPU execution unit count of either 16 or 32, and Intel’s Time Coordinated Computing and Time-Sensitive Networking GbE features. The x7000RE offer integrated Intel UHD Graphics, Intel DL Boost, Intel AVX2 with INT8 support, and OpenVINO toolkit support.

Intel says the chips will allow customers to easily deploy deep learning inference at the industrial edge and in smart cities, and “enhance computer vision solutions with built-in AI capabilities and ecosystem-enabled camera modules” as well as “capture power- and cost-efficient performance to enable latency-bounded workloads in robotics and automation.”

It’s time for AMD, Intel, and Nvidia to call a truce on the performance arms race and focus on sustainability and efficiency

Today is Earth Day, and it’s as good a time as any to think about the way we use technology and how we can use it better and more sustainably given the myriad challenges it represents to our environment.

Major computer manufacturers like Acer, Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and many others have all started moving towards more sustainable products, and not just in their use of better packing materials that reduce new material use by increasing the amount of post-consumer material in their construction.

Even the computers themselves are starting to use post-consumer materials and manufacturers are expanding opportunities for upgrading the devices to keep them current longer, thereby reducing e-waste around the world.

But one area hasn’t seen nearly enough attention: processors, specifically their power usage.

A computer’s CPU is the brains of the whole operation, so naturally, it needs a good bit of power to operate at higher levels of performance. This is even more true of dedicated GPU chips in laptops or the best graphics cards used in desktop systems.

And while better power efficiency in laptops is going to be a bigger plus in terms of battery life, desktops have seemingly gone in the complete opposite direction, with Intel, AMD, and Nvidia configured systems drawing a lot of power to run hardware that often exceeds what users need, all so they can be called the ‘fastest’ or ‘most powerful’. It’s not a sustainable approach.

We need to start emphasizing efficiency over power

There will be circumstances when a lot of power for a component is necessary to do important work, and I’m not saying that every graphics card needs to have its power consumption halved as a basic rule.

But for consumers who are barely tapping into the performance that an Nvidia RTX 4080 Super brings to the table, much less what an Nvidia RTX 4090 or AMD RX 7900 XTX offers, you have to ask if this kind of performance is worth the cost in terms of carbon emissions.

And of course, this is only in terms of useful work, like video editing or gaming, and not for something like cryptocurrency mining, which has at best a marginal social utility, and whose cost in terms of energy usage in the aggregate far outstrips any practical benefit cryptocurrency has in the real world (unless you’re really into criminal activity or need to launder some money).

Regular old processors aren’t immune either, with the current generation of Intel processors soaking up an extraordinary amount of energy (at least in bursts) relative to competitors like AMD and especially Apple.

What you get for that energy draw is some incredible performance numbers, but for 97-98% of users, this kind of performance is absolutely unnecessary, even if users are using the appropriate processor for their needs.

The performance arms race needs to change

Ultimately, AMD, Intel, and Nvidia are locked in an arms race for making the fastest and most powerful processors and graphics cards, and it shows no signs of stopping. Meanwhile, Apple’s move to its own M-series silicon has been a major win, both for the company and for consumers.

Apple’s chips are based on Arm‘s big.LITTLE architecture, which is incredibly energy efficient from the ground up, originally having been intended for mobile devices. But now that the architecture is sophisticated enough to be used in laptops and even desktops, the energy efficiency remains while Apple has scored major performance gains over both AMD and Intel and kept energy use down.

If we are going to maintain a livable planet in the future, we must go on an energy diet. Seeing the difference between what Apple’s done and what AMD, Intel, and Nvidia aren’t doing puts to bed any excuse those three latter chipmakers have for not refocusing on efficiency going forward.

As hard as it may be to hear or accept, these three chipmakers must acknowledge that we don’t have a performance problem, we have a sustainability problem. They should turn away from squeezing even more performance out of their hardware that we don’t need, and give us the efficiency that is desperately needed, especially when these marginal increases in power are coming at far too high a cost.

Some power users and enthusiasts might not like seeing decreasing power usage while maintaining roughly the same level of performance gen-on-gen, or slightly better performance but far less than with previous generations, but it’s what needs to be done, and the sooner everyone acknowledges this and adapts, the better.

Intel unveils flurry of new Arc GPUs — however serious graphics users will have to wait for more powerful models, as these focus on a completely different and more lucrative market

Two years after the debut of its Arc Alchemist GPUs, Intel is launching six new Arc products, but these are designed for edge/embedded systems.

These edge systems, which process data near the source to reduce latency and bandwidth use, are becoming increasingly essential in areas such as IoT, autonomous vehicles, and AI applications.

As Intel says, “AI at the edge is exploding with new use cases and workloads being developed daily. These AI workloads often require a high degree of parallel processing and memory bandwidth for peak performance, dedicated hardware, optimized architecture for compute efficiency, and reduced latency with faster results for real-time processing. A discrete GPU may be the ideal solution for edge AI use cases requiring high performance and complex model support.”

Six SKUs

The new Arc on edge GPUs are built on Intel’s highly scalable Intel Xe-core architecture and support AI acceleration, visual computing and media processing. Using the OpenVINO toolkit developers can deploy AI models across Intel hardware.

The Arc on edge offerings have a number of benefits, including reduced latency, improved bandwidth efficiency and better privacy and security.

For high performance and to handle heavy AI workloads and expansive use cases such as facial recognition and generative conversational speech, there’s the 7XXE. For immersive visual experiences and enhanced AI inferencing capabilities, there’s the 5XXE, and for low power and small form factor requirements, Intel has the 3XXE.

There are six SKUs available – the A310E and A3503 with 6 Xe-cores, the A370E and A380E with 8 cores, and the A580E and A750E with 28 cores. The A310E, A3503 and A370E have 4GB of GDDDR6 memory with 112GB/s memory bandwidth. The A380E has 6GB with 186GB/s bandwidth, while the A580E and A750E’s memory and memory bandwidth are unknown for now. Intel says only that it is “in planning”. There’s also no launch date for those two either, just TBD. The other four SKUs will be available this month.

Intel Arc GPUs are built to be paired with Intel Core processors, from 10th Gen upwards and Intel Xeon W-3400 and W-2400. A number of products featuring the new Arc GPUs are set to be released in the coming months from Intel partners including from ADLINK, Advantech, Asus, Matrox and Sparkle.

Intel finally brings its latest laptop CPU tech to other platforms but desktop users are shunned — Meteor Lake-PS architecture fuses Core Ultra and LGA socket, targets edge systems instead

It was expected that Intel‘s LGA1851 socket would house the tech giant’s next-gen Arrow Lake chips, but for now it seems the company might have another use for it.

At the recent Embedded World conference, Intel unveiled its Meteor Lake-PS architecture for edge systems, the first Core Ultra processor on an LGA socket.

The new SoC design, which integrates the Intel Arc GPU and a neural processing unit, is aimed at enabling generative AI and handling demanding graphics workloads for sectors such as retail, education, smart cities, and industry.

Ultra low TDP

Intel says its Core Ultra processors offer up to 5.02x superior image classification inference performance compared to the 14th Gen Core desktop processors. Applications for the PS series include GenAI-enabled kiosks and smart point-of-sale systems in physical retail stores, interactive whiteboards for advanced classroom experiences, and AI vision-enhanced industrial devices for manufacturing and roadside units.

The new chips are designed with low-power, always-on usage scenarios in mind. This is evident from the fact that none of these chips have a Thermal Design Power higher than 65W. There’s even a low-power version with a 15W rating (12-28 configurable TDP).

Intel says “Moving away from the conventional setup where Intel Core desktop processors are combined with discrete GPUs, the PS series of Intel Core Ultra processors introduce an innovative integration of GPU and AI Boost functionalities directly within the processors, alongside the flexible LGA socket configuration. Offering four times the number of graphics execution units (EUs) compared to their predecessors in the S or desktop series, these processors deliver a powerful alternative for handling AI and graphics-heavy tasks. This design not only negates the necessity for an additional discrete GPU, thereby lowering costs and simplifying the overall design process, it also positions these processors as the go-to solution for those prioritizing efficiency alongside enhanced performance.”

The desktop LGA1851 socket can support 5600MHz DDR5 memory, two PCIe Gen4 SSDs, and four Thunderbolt 4 devices. There is a notable absence of chipset support for Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, and PCIe Gen5, however.

The new desktop Intel Meteor Lake chips are not expected to be available until the fourth quarter of 2024. This timeline also coincides with the expected launch of Arrow Lake desktop CPUs, according to the latest industry rumors.

The lack of communication that happened six years ago resulted in thousands of devices being vulnerable to a remotely exploitable heap out-of-bounds (OOB) read vulnerability – today. Among the vulnerable devices are Intel and Lenovo servers.

Here is what happened: Six years ago, the maintainers of Lighttpd discovered the above-mentioned flaw, which could allow threat actors to exfiltrate process memory addresses. That, in turn, could have been used to work around protection mechanisms.

The security team patched the flaw in August 2018, in version 1.4.51, but they didn’t assign a CVE. Lighttpd is an open-source web server optimized for speed-critical environments.

Thousands of vulnerable devices

As the CVE wasn’t assigned, the developers of AMI MegaRAC Baseboard Management Controllers (BMC) missed the update and did not integrate it into their product, BleepingComputer reports. BMCs are microcontrollers found on motherboards built for servers, data centers, cloud environments, and similar. They are designed for remote management, rebooting, monitoring, and firmware.

Consequently, the vulnerability was passed down the supply chain to system vendors and their customers.

Six years later, during a BMC scan, security researchers Binarly stumbled upon the vulnerability. The company says that multiple products, including some from Intel, Lenovo, and Supermicro, are all vulnerable.

“Based on our data, nearly 2000+ devices are impacted in the field. In reality, this number is even bigger,” the researchers told BleepingComputer.

Depending on the vendors and the devices, the vulnerability was given three separate identifiers: BRLY-2024-002, BRLY-2024-003, and BRLY-2024-004.

While Binarly claims that some of the vulnerable systems were released as recently as late February last year, both Intel and Lenovo said the impacted models reached end-of-life and as such aren’t recommended for use anyway. They will never receive further patches to address the problem, and will remain vulnerable until they are replaced with newer, supported systems.

Samsung is slowly expanding its PC lineup. After launching its first desktop PC in years last year, the company has launched its new all-in-one PC in South Korea. Named All-In-One Pro, the iMac-like desktop PC is now available for pre-order. It will be readily available in South Korea starting on April 22.

The All-In-One Pro is priced at 1.99 million ($1,469) in South Korea. It isn’t clear if it would be launched outside of South Korea.

Samsung’s new All-In-One Pro PC has a metal frame and Intel Core Ultra processor

The All-In-One Pro has a metal frame with an ultra-slim design (6.5mm). Samsung says its ultra-slim form factor gives users more free space on their table. Even the wireless keyboard and mouse bundled with the All-In-One Pro have metal materials and offer a unified design. It has a 27-inch 4K screen, which is 13% wider than last year’s All-In-One Pro model. It is also equipped with 3D loudspeakers compatible with Dolby Atmos audio.

It has the Intel Core Ultra processor (exact model number unknown as of now), which offers higher CPU and GPU performance than the 13th Gen Intel Core i5 chip used in last year’s All-In-One PC. It likely comes with at least 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD storage. It isn’t clear if its RAM and SSD can be upgraded. The full-sized keyboard has a dedicated Microsoft Copilot AI key, while the mouse has a minimalistic design.

It has an HDMI port, a couple of USB Type-A ports, an Ethernet port, and a 3.5mm headphone port. Wireless connectivity features include Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E. It also has a built-in webcam for video calls and conferences. It comes with Windows 11 Home and several Galaxy Ecosystem apps and features, including Buds Auto Switch, Multi Control, Quick Share, and Second Screen. You can drag and drop files from your Galaxy phone or tablet to the All-In-One Pro and vice versa.

Thanks to the Windows Phone Link app, you can see your Galaxy phone’s notifications on the PC and even reply to notifications. You can mirror the phone’s screen on the PC as well. You can also use your Galaxy phone’s camera as your All-In-One Pro’s webcam for even better image quality.

A Samsung Electronics official said, “Samsung All-in-One Pro is an all-round PC that can be used in a variety of daily life such as studying, work, and hobbies with its sophisticated design and powerful performance. It provides a more convenient and free daily life with powerful performance, a differentiated Galaxy ecosystem, and AI functions.”

One of Intel’s Lunar Lake processors, which are very promising power-efficient next-gen chips for laptops, has just been spotted and it’s seemingly part of the Core Ultra 200 family.

This comes courtesy of a leak on X (formerly Twitter), highlighted by VideoCardz and posted by @miktdt (a leaker who has popped up a couple of times recently).

As you can see, the CPU is called the Intel Core Ultra 5 234V, as posted on 01.org, which is Team Blue’s Open Source Technology Center – so the info should be correct (you’d hope, anyway).

The processor is confirmed to have 8 cores, and as previously rumored, this breaks down into 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. We can safely ignore the clock speed of 2.1GHz as this is silicon still in testing.

V for victory?

What’s interesting here is the fact that the Lunar Lake processor is a Core Ultra part with a ‘V’ suffix. It’ll run alongside Arrow Lake mobile H and HX chips – high-end silicon – with Lunar Lake covering the lower-end and majoring in being seriously efficient. The idea is that it’ll be perfect for premium thin-and-light laptops.

All of these will be Core Ultra 200 CPUs, with the Ultra denoting they are using the newest Intel architecture, whereas there will also be Raptor Lake Refresh H laptop processors that’ll be part of the Core 200 range as well (but not labeled ‘Ultra’ as these are the last-gen architecture).

Yes, the naming scheme is a little confusing, but what do you expect from Intel? It’s par for the course, and we’ve seen more convoluted naming in the tech world to be fair.

Core 200 CPUs will follow up the current Core 100 range, which consists of Meteor Lake – both high-end (H) and low-end (U) processors – running alongside some Raptor Lake Refresh chips.

Some previous rumors suggested that with the next-gen laptop products from Intel, we might also see Arrow Lake-U CPUs to sit underneath Lunar Lake, for a more wallet-friendly alternative in cheaper notebooks – and maybe that’s still the case. However, VideoCardz makes no mention of such chips here. As ever, we’ll see how things pan out.

Intel has unleashed a new version of its XeSS upscaling tech that rivals Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR for speeding up frame rates in PC games.

Intel XeSS 1.3 is fresh on the scene, although note that it’s still in preview testing right now, with Team Blue claiming some decent performance boosts compared to XeSS 1.1 or 1.2.

On a PC with an Arc A750 GPU, Intel discovered a particularly impressive jump in frames per second (fps) with Diablo 4 at 1440p resolution (with high details and ray tracing on). Without XeSS, the action RPG ran at 37 fps, but with XeSS that increased to 71 fps – and with the new XeSS 1.3 the game hit 91 fps. That’s a performance gain of almost 30% over the previous incarnation of XeSS.

Other games have more modest, but still worthwhile, improvements, in the order of around 5 extra fps, a boost of around 10%.

Intel also demonstrated integrated graphics with the Arc GPU in an Intel Core Ultra processor, running games at 1080p with medium details. On average, Team Blue found XeSS 1.3 delivered 8% more fps compared to previous versions.

Not just faster, but better-looking upscaling too

XeSS 1.3 isn’t just about faster frame rates for your GPU, though, as Intel has been fine-tuning the image quality as well. The company tells us that version 1.3 of its upscaling tech benefits from an updated model that provides more detail in the image, better anti-aliasing (smoothing of jaggies) and less in the way of ghosting.

All in all, it seems like a sizeable stride forward for XeSS, but Intel will need to keep pushing with its upscaling technology – because AMD and Nvidia most definitely aren’t standing still.

Indeed, Nvidia just released DLSS 3.7 which offers similar improvements to what we see here from Intel (less ghosting, better temporal stability). And AMD may have even bigger moves underway – possibly finally bringing AI into the mix with FSR. (Note that both Intel and Nvidia already use hardware-accelerated AI cores to pep up their respective upscaling technologies).

Another crypto-mining boom threatens CPU prices, with AMD’s Ryzen 7950X now sold out – and Intel could be the real winner here

Are we about to see a return of crypto-mining causing havoc with PC hardware pricing? Hopefully not, but there are already hints that mining activity is pushing up the prices of some CPUs.

Yes, processors, not GPUs as has been the case in the past, and specifically, we’re talking about AMD Ryzen chips – high-end models from the Ryzen 7000 family.

What’s happening is that the recent spike in the value of Bitcoin has had a knock-on effect with the prices of other alternate cryptocurrencies, some of which are well-suited to being mined with a beefy CPU.

Enter stage left the flagship Ryzen 9 7950X, a 16-core processor which excels at those kind of mining workloads, thanks to the AMD CPU’s support for AVX instructions (which Intel Core CPUs don’t offer since Alder Lake) and its plentiful L3 cache. The cherry on top for miners is Ryzen’s power-efficiency, too.

With the crypto balloon rising fast right now, what this means is that as Wccftech points out, there’s money to be made mining obscure currencies like Qubic, to the tune of $3 per day currently. (That’s profit made after the electricity costs of running the Ryzen 9 7950X, assuming it’s at 170W, going by the tech site’s calculations).

If we compare that to an RTX 4090 graphics card, that offers a daily profit of up to $1.90, with a much heftier power draw to boot (450W). So, you can see why folks are now looking at CPUs rather than GPUs in some scenarios.

As a result, looking at the retail picture in the US, the Ryzen 9 7950X is sold out online at Newegg, Best Buy, and Micro Center – even in-store pickup is only an option in a few stores at the latter, with AMD’s flagship mostly sold out at bricks-and-mortar shops, too.

Furthermore, the 7950X has been pushed up in price, at least with Newegg, to $741 in the US (but not at the other retailers, we should note).

Analysis: Zen 5 and the art of crypto-mining

Okay, so all this sounds pretty bad, but in reality, how worried should we be about this apparent development?

Well, on the more positive side, it’s still early days, and this could just be a temporary spike in interest with crypto-mining. When Bitcoin (inevitably) experiences its next dip, and these alternate coins also deflate, the situation with AMD’s top-end Ryzen processors should normalize again.

We further need to bear in mind that this is only applicable to those top dog CPUs of the Ryzen 7000 family, and away from the highest tiers, the processor market isn’t affected. Obviously Intel’s CPUs aren’t hit, either, as they lack the mentioned strengths (AVX) as outlined above.

If this crypto surge does continue, or at least keep much of its momentum over a longer period, it raises some worrying questions. AMD has next-gen CPUs coming later this year, and as a hardware leaker, Kepler, asserts on X (formerly Twitter), those Zen 5 chips have double the AVX-512 performance of current Zen 4 silicon.

Which means that the Ryzen 9 models for the next-gen desktop launch might be highly sought after by miners, and stock – which can be thin on the ground at the higher tiers to begin with anyway – is going to vanish very swiftly. All of which could play havoc with AMD’s Zen 5 launch, at the top-end anyway, leading to speculation of LHR processors (chips with their performance restricted for mining tasks, as happened with GPUs at the height of the last mining boom). That speculation is mostly in jest at this stage, of course, but it makes the point that this is clearly becoming a concern.

For AMD, anyway – for Intel it could be a golden opportunity, as its next-gen Arrow Lake chips are apparently not going to come with AVX-512 support again (at least based on current leaks), and so won’t be hit in the same way. This could push a lot of consumers towards the Intel side of the equation in the higher-end CPU space for desktop PCs, purely by necessity – depending on how the mining situation pans out, naturally.
