Amazon today has Apple’s AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 with Lightning Charging Case on sale, with up to $49 in savings on these earbuds. For the AirPods 3, this is the first time we’ve tracked a discount on the device since February.

The AirPods 2 are on sale for $79.99, down from $129.00, and the AirPods 3 with Lightning Charging Case are on sale for $139.99, down from $169.00. This discount on the AirPods 2 beats the sale we’ve been tracking over the past few weeks by about $10.

Shipping times have started slipping on the AirPods 3, with estimates currently given for May 17-22 for most residences in the United States. If you’re looking for a Pro model, Amazon also has the AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C on sale for $179.99, down from $249.00.

The Google Pixel 8a could be with us as early as May 14, when Google I/O 2024 gets underway, and a fresh leak potentially gives us all the specs of the device – as well as pricing for the mid-range phone in Europe.

This comes from @MysteryLupin (via Android Police), and while some of this information has been leaked before, we haven’t previously seen such a comprehensive list of every spec the Pixel 8a is going to bring along with it.

Under the hood we’re looking at a Tensor G3 chipset (just like the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro), 8GB of RAM, and either 128GB or 256GB of on-board storage. The screen is said to be a 6.1-inch AMOLED display with up to 2,000 nits of brightness at its peak.

The rear cameras apparently come in at 64MP and 13MP, with a 13MP selfie camera on the front – and a slew of AI photo editing features are mentioned in the leak, as you would expect from a Google Pixel phone. The battery is said to last up to 72 hours with power saver mode enabled, or “over 24 hours” with normal use.

Colors and costs

There’s an interesting list of colors in this leak: Volcanic Black, Porcelain, Blue, Azure, Green, and Aloe. That sounds like two shades of blue and two shades of green to make six colors in total, whereas previous leaks have only shown four. It’s possible there might be variations in availability based on region.

We also have a starting price for Europe too: €549. That’s a little higher than the €509 that the Google Pixel 7a cost when it first launched, so prices in other parts of the world may get bumped too (the Pixel 7a was priced at $499 / £449 / AU$749 at launch).

The pricing of this smartphone is an interesting one, because €569 and €599 have also been mentioned in previous leaks. It seems as though there’s no consensus on whether the Google Pixel 8a is set to get a price hike or not.

Ultimately, how much the Pixel 8a costs is going to go a long way to determining whether or not it’s better value for money than the Pixel 8, which starts at $699 / £699 / AU$1,199. In a couple of weeks, we should know for sure.

With iOS 17.5, Apple is adding a “Repair State” feature that is designed to allow an iPhone to be sent in for service without deactivating Find My and Activation Lock. The fourth iOS 17.5 beta that came out today adds a “Remove This Device” option for all devices in ‌Find My‌, and using it with an ‌iPhone‌ puts that ‌iPhone‌ into the new Repair State.

Right now, sending an ‌iPhone‌ to Apple to be repaired requires turning off Find My, and Apple says that it “might not” be able to repair devices that have ‌Find My‌ activated. Turning off ‌Find My‌ disables Activation Lock, an important anti-theft security feature that prevents an ‌iPhone‌ from being used with another Apple ID.

Apple currently uses ‌Find My‌ and Activation Lock as a way to ensure that a person sending a device in for repair actually owns that device, and that it’s not stolen. An ‌iPhone‌ sent in for repair with ‌Find My‌ disabled cannot be tracked, and it is not protected from theft, so if it is lost or stolen at some point in transit during the repair process, there is no recovery method available. Removing ‌Find My‌ also has a hitch with Stolen Device Protection, as there is an hour wait when turning off ‌Find My‌, which can be inconvenient for repair purposes.

The new repair state leaves ‌Find My‌ turned on, so Activation Lock remains enabled, and the ‌iPhone‌ continues to be trackable with the ‌Find My‌ app while it is being repaired. When enabled, the device in the repair state has a “Ready for Repair” label. “This device remains fully functional in the repair state,” reads the text.

In the list of devices, an ‌iPhone‌ put into a repair state has a small stethoscope icon, and it can be marked as lost. While in repair state, the ‌iPhone‌ is fully functional.

As of right now, using the “Remove This Device” option in ‌Find My‌ to enable a repair state appears to be limited to the ‌iPhone‌. Using it on other devices like an ‌iPhone‌, Mac, or Apple Watch shows a warning that the feature will remove the device from the ‌Apple ID‌ account, allowing it to be used by someone else. Note that an ‌iPhone‌ must be online and trackable through ‌Find My‌ for the repair state option to pop up. An ‌iPhone‌ that is offline will display the standard removal text. It is also worth noting that repair state cannot be disabled at the current time.

Repair state is a feature that is still in development, so it might work with other devices when iOS 17.5 and its sister updates launch in May.

Mayton Motion has developed a wireless adapter that transforms a car’s navigation screen into a functional laptop-like display. Users can access a range of new features by connecting the device via the car’s USB port.

AutoPro X is powered by Android Auto/Samsung DeX (it only works with Samsung Galaxy models that support DeX) and offers Bluetooth pairing, so users can connect game controllers, keyboards and other devices to the screen. This isn’t necessarily the greatest of ideas, since it could end up being a distraction for the driver, but we’d hope for some common sense to be used here.

Mayton says the AutoPro X allows all manner of functionality such as GPS, YouTube or OTT streaming, internet browsing, email, social media, Chat GPT, document processing, gaming, and voice recognition.

AutoPro X has a ‘Screen Select Mode’, which allows drivers to adjust the display size to either fill the screen or show it in the original ratio.

AutoPro X is available to back on Kickstarter, with Early Bird pricing at $140.

The device is compatible with vehicles that can be connected to Samsung Galaxy phones and Android Auto. Your car does have to support wired Android Auto. Mayton says, “The easiest way to check is to connect your vehicle with a cable and see if Android Auto works. If it does, you should be able to use our product.” You can also browse the compatible phones and vehicles list on the Kickstarter page.

As with any crowdsourced projects, you should be aware that backing a product doesn’t mean that it will be completed or that you will receive the item you backed. That said, at the time of writing, $142,984 had been pledged, well above the $5000 goal, so it’s looking positive.

Meta’s VR headsets recently received update v64, which according to Meta added several improvements to their software – such as better-quality mixed-reality passthrough in the case of the Meta Quest 3 (though I didn’t see a massive difference after installing the update on my headset).

It’s now been discovered (first by Twitter user @Squashi9) that the update also included another upgrade for Meta’s hardware, with Space Scan, the Quest 3’s room scanning feature, getting a major buff thanks to AI.

The Quest 3’s Space Scan is different to its regular boundary scan, which sets up your safe play space for VR. Instead, Space Scan maps out your room for mixed-reality experiences, marking out walls, floors, and ceilings so that experiences are correctly calibrated.

You also have the option to add and label furniture, but you had to do this part manually until update v64 rolled out. Now, when you do a room scan your Quest 3 will automatically highlight and label furniture – and based on my tests it works flawlessly.

Annoyingly, the headset wouldn’t let me take screenshots of the process, so you’ll have to trust me when I say that every piece of furniture was not only picked up by the scan and correctly marked out, it was also labelled accurately – it even picked up on my windows and doors, which I wasn’t expecting.

The only mistake I spotted was that a chair I have in my living room was designated a ‘couch’, though this seems to be more an issue with Meta’s lack of more specific labels than with Space Scan’s ability to detect what type of object each item of furniture is.

This feature isn’t a complete surprise, as Reality Labs showed a version of it off on Threads in March. What is surprising, however, is how quickly it’s been rolled out after being unveiled – though I’m not complaining, considering how well it works and how easy it makes scanning your room.

So what?

Adding furniture has a use for MR and VR apps. Tables can be used by apps like Horizon Workrooms as designated desks, while sitting down in or getting up from a designated couch will change your VR experience between a standing or seated mode.

Meanwhile, some apps can use the detected doors, windows, walls, and furniture such as a bookshelf to adjust how mixed-reality experiences interact with your space.

With Meta making it less tedious to add these data points, app developers have more of a reason to take furniture into account when designing VR and MR experiences, which should lead to them feeling more immersive.

This also gives Meta a leg up over the Apple Vision Pro, as it’s not yet able to create a room scan that’s as detailed as the one found on Meta’s hardware – though until software starts to take real advantage of this feature it’s not that big a deal.

We’ll have to wait and see what comes of this improvement, but if you’ve already made a space scan or two on your Quest 3 you might want to redo them, as the new scans should be a lot more accurate.

Bethesda boss Todd Howard has opened up on the one big difference between the iconic Fallout videogame series and its Prime Video TV adaptation.

Speaking exclusively to TechRadar, Howard revealed that he was keen for Amazon‘s live-action take on Fallout to explore what the world was like prior to events depicted in the popular post-apocalyptic first-person shooter (FPS) games.

The franchise is set on a dystopian Earth, on an alternate timeline, hundreds of years after The Great War. The cataclysmic event, which occurred on October 23, 2077, sees the US and China engage in all-out thermonuclear war, resulting in the deaths of billions and the end of civilization as we know it. However, while each game in Bethesda’s beloved series explores the, well, fallout from the in-universe Sino-American War, none of them have explicitly shown said events to players in the 27 years since the franchise began.

Howard, who has overseen development of each game since 2008’s Fallout 3, believes Amazon’s Fallout TV show is incredibly faithful to almost every aspect of the franchise that Bethesda created. He admits, though, that the decision to depict The Great War in the TV adaptation – a stunning but harrowing sequence that plays out in the first seven minutes of episode one – was a necessity to immerse audiences old and new in the story it tells.

“The big [change] was exploring the past,” he told me. “In our [mine and creator Jonathan Nolan’s] initial conversations, we knew we wanted to tell a new story that feels like a new chapter in the Fallout series, much like we do with the games, where each one has its own geography and story, but still has all of the hallmarks of previous titles.

“We both wanted to do that with the show, but the one thing we could never do in the games was [explore] the past. The way Jonah and everyone else has explored what the US was like, what’s the threat of the atomic bomb and what will people do if a nuclear war happens, what’s the Red Scare, who’s Vault-Tec… they brought all this fabulous history and lore to Fallout. All these things then affect the present day characters in the show, so it was a treat for me and everyone at Bethesda who has worked on Fallout to think ‘Oh, this is really fresh, but it’s also quintessential Fallout‘.

Having seen Fallout‘s first four episodes – look out for my review shortly – I can say, without spoiling too much, that the show’s examination of a pre-Great War Earth is flamboyant, elegantly retrofuturistic and fully lived-in. Through the eyes of big-screen star Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins), we get to see what life was like before the bombs fell, with flashback sequences interspersed through the show’s primary present-day events.

It’s the aforementioned beginnings of The Great War, though, that are – perhaps unsurprisingly – the most striking and moving aspect of hat exploration. Fallout‘s various trailers and clips have invited us to a hilariously grim party at the end of the world and shown us some funny Western stand-off-style action, but its opening salvo of inescapable horror is as chilling, albeit not as long as, an opening as viewers were treated to with The Last of Us‘ TV adaptation on Max. Indeed, as Goggins and fellow cast member Kyle McLachlan, who plays Vault-33 oversees Hank MacLean, told me, they were emotionally floored by seeing said scene for the first time.

“Watching the show’s first seven minutes with an audience was illuminating but horrifying,” Goggins revealed. “Any version of trauma, at any level, is tough to see, but I was so surprised by the finished product and seeing how emotional everyone, who I watched it with, was. I think that’s when the show is at its best – it’s funny, but there are real consequences for the people involved.”

“The impact of those opening minutes is profound,” McLachlan added. “Cooper is trying to save his daughter and make everything okay but, as an audience member, I also found myself thinking ‘oh, we – society – have really let them [the generations to come] down’. This was in the powers that be’s control and in their power to pre-empt, but they didn’t. There are many themes in our show, but I think its examination of having responsibility, taking action, and living with your choices is one of the more powerful ones.”

Here’s a good deal if you need a big chunk of storage space for a Nintendo Switch, Raspberry Pi or any other device that still accepts microSD cards: The 1TB version of Lexar’s Professional 1066x card is now down to $76.49 on Amazon. That’s the lowest price we’ve tracked for this model and roughly $9 off the card’s typical street price. The discount comes as part of a wider sale on Lexar storage gear that started on Sunday for World Backup Day, a commemorative date that intends to raise awareness about data protection and preservation. (Seagate, Crucial and other storage manufacturers are still running sales as well.)

The Professional 1066x is not a formal pick in our microSD card buying guide, as it’s a bit slower than our top choices, Samsung’s Pro Plus and Pro Ultimate, particularly in terms of sequential read speeds (which matter when you want to access large files stored on the card). Still, neither of those cards are available in a 1TB capacity — the Pro Plus will be, but not until later this year — and the Lexar model wasn’t drastically far behind in our benchmark tests. For devices like the Switch or Steam Deck that cap microSD cards to standard UHS-I speeds, or even for capturing 4K video more casually, it’ll be good enough. We’ll note that there are some 1TB cards available for less, but among the models we’ve tested, this is a solid value for those who need a high capacity above all else.

If you need a standard SD card, meanwhile, this sale also brings the SD version of the 1TB Professional 1066x down to $110. That’s another all-time low and about $15 off that model’s usual going rate.

The 2024 Summer Olympics are just 128 days away. They’ll be here before you know it, so what better time to learn about all the groovy features that the Games’ streaming home, Peacock, has lined up?

The platform will host more than 5,000 hours of live coverage across the two weeks, including each of the 329 medal events. That’s far more than anyone could possibly watch during the Games, so to help you keep track of several events at once, Peacock is offering several multiview options. On TVs, tablets and desktop browsers (but not phones, sadly), you’ll be able to watch four matches at the same time in sports such as track and field, soccer and wrestling in a traditional multiview format.

A mode called Peacock Discovery Multiview aims to direct you to the most important events. Here, you’ll see on-screen descriptions telling you what’s at stake (such as whether there’s an elimination risk or if it’s a medal event) or if you’re watching a first-time Olympian. In both multiview modes, you can move the screens around, choose the audio track you want to listen to and click through to watch an event in full screen. Peacock will offer you up to four multiview options at any given time.

Another key new feature is called Peacock Live Actions. The idea here is to help you follow the events you’re most interested in. So, if you’re really enjoying a live gymnastics session but the whip-around coverage on the Gold Show broadcast is about to switch over to weightlifting or something, you can hit a button to keep watching the action on the parallel bars. Peacock says the feature will also allow those watching the NBC primetime simulcast to add events to their My Stuff list to watch later.

Elsewhere, you’ll be able to browse through the coverage by sport and check out an interactive schedule. The Catch Up with Key Plays tool will be available for basketball and golf on top of soccer. And along with up-to-date medal standings, you’ll be able to search for your favorite athletes. This will bring you to live events and replays including your favorite competitor, regardless of whether they’re competing individually or as part of a team.

While the Olympics don’t start for another few months, you can subscribe to Peacock now. If you do so and opt for an annual plan, you’ll get 12 months of access for the price of 10.
