Hacking techniques don’t have to be particularly advanced to be successful. Case in point – Lazy Koala.

Cybersecurity researchers from Positive Technologies Expert Security Center (PT ESC) recently uncovered a new threat actor, which they dubbed Lazy Koala. Nothing about this group is notably progressive or sophisticated, but it is achieving outstanding results.

As per the report, the attackers are targeting enterprises in Russia and six Commonwealth of Independent States countries – Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Armenia. Their victims work in government agencies, financial organizations, and educational institutions, and they mostly go for login credentials to various services.

Exfiltration via Telegram

So far, almost 900 accounts have been compromised, the researchers said. It is unclear what the attackers are doing with the information, but it’s likely that they’re either selling it on the dark web, or using it in further, more devastating attacks.

The attacks are simple – they include crafting convincing phishing attacks, often in languages native to the locals, and getting the victims to download and run the attachment. The files being distributed in these phishing attacks deploy a “primitive password stealer malware”.

The infostealer then grabs the files and exfiltrates them via telegram bots. The person handling these bots is called Koala, giving PT ESC the idea behind the name.

“The calling card of the new group is this: ‘harder doesn’t mean better.’ Lazy Koala doesn’t bother with complex tools, tactics, and techniques, but they still get the job done,” said Denis Kuvshinov, Head of Threat Analysis, Positive Technologies Expert Security Center.

“After establishing itself on the infected device, the malware exfiltrates the stolen data using Telegram, a favorite tool among attackers,” Kuvshinov added.

PT ESC said that it notified the victims, adding that the information stolen in this campaign will most likely be sold on the dark web.

Google Chrome for Android allows you to create groups of tabs, which is a very nifty feature as it helps you organize tabs. Furthermore, it also provides you with the option to give a tab group a name, which makes it easier for you to distinguish between various groups of tabs. Well, the company is now working on providing you with another way to distinguish between tab groups in Chrome for Android.

According to a new post from a Chrome expert on X/Twitter who goes by @LeoPeva64, Google is working on allowing you to give a tab group a color, which will make it easier for you to distinguish between various tab groups. According to the video they have shared, there are nine colors you can choose from. Once you select a color for a tab group, a thick dot (a circle) with that color will appear on the top-left corner of the tab group.

At the moment, the feature is live in Chrome for Android’s Canary channel. Just like any other feature that the company tests in this channel, there’s no guarantee that tab group coloring will make it to the stable version of the web browser. However, we hope that it does as it seems like a very useful feature, especially if you don’t want to spend time thinking about a name for a tab group and typing it out.

Every year around Christmas, I hang an ornament on the tree featuring a photo of my family. There we are, all four of us, in one shot, Except something is wrong with the photo; while we’re all dressed in our winter best, we don’t quite hang together as a unit. In fact, it becomes quite clear that this is not a natural group shot and is something I cooked up in Photoshop because I needed a nice family photo for the ornament frame. No one is fooled when they look at it.

Suffice to say, I feel for Princess of Wales Kate Middleton, the royal who, in an apparent effort to convey normalcy in what might not be entirely normal times, did a bit of family portrait photo editing wizardry that didn’t all go according to plan. There are numerous artifacts in her final image, shared widely over the weekend to celebrate UK Mother’s Day. So many that the Royal Family eventually pulled the photo and Middleton fessed up to doing some creative photo editing.

I’m not here to judge that effort or why she did it. No, I offer a helping hand and a few tips from modern mobile and application-based technology that could help her and you avoid similar photo-editing mishaps.

The Best Shot

If the goal was simply to get all those enthusiastic faces together (all the kids smiling and happy along with Kate’s best look) then I think the Google Pixel 8 Pro’s new Best Shot feature might’ve saved her a lot of trouble.

Best Shot works by letting you take a quick series of pictures from one position (no moving or you ruin it) and then letting you choose the best expressions from each shot, before combining them into one near-perfect master shot. If Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis weren’t all smiling or laughing at once, Kate could’ve selected the biggest smiles from each image and combined them into one in a way that, thanks to AI, looks surprisingly natural.

This is a much better approach than trying to copy and paste people (or even parts of people) from one image to another and then doing your best to match hand and clothing placement. Using that method never ends well.

Magic Editor

Sometimes, it’s not just the expressions you want to replace or edit. If you have more work to do – as it appears Kate did – then Google‘s Magic Editor (and Magic Eraser), also found on the Pixel 8 Pro, could help here.

While Magic Editor and Magic eraser won’t let you combine disparate photos, the tools can help you make the most of what you’ve got and even clean up a bad Photoshop edit, and all using AI.

You’ll find the tools on a Pixel 8 phone under Photos/Edit/Tools.

If, for instance, you want to remove some extra coat fabric showing in a space where there should be nothing but the background, you can use Magic Eraser to select the offending object by drawing over it with a semi-transparent digital marker, delete it, and have the Pixel 8 Pro automatically replace the removed fabric with a natural-looking background.

Or, if you see a blurred hand that looks unnatural, you can unblur the fuzzy parts of your photo.

Firefly to the rescue

Sometimes, you need to use the right tools in Adobe Photoshop. I, too, have overused the Clone tool, which lets you take an element, background, or texture from one part of a photo and stamp it in another place to, for instance, cover up an errant few strands of hair. The problem with this feature is that it’s a bit of a blunt object.

Adobe Photoshop now includes Firefly (as does Photoshop Express), which lets you use generative AI to fill in and extend image elements in ways that often look as natural as (or even better than) the original photos.

Is your photo missing part of a coast zipper? Delete the bad-looking part, select the real zipper plus the space left by your cut, and ask Firefly to fill it in. You will probably have a perfect-looking coat zipper. Do you want to replace that coat fabric with the grass from the background? Delete the grass, select the area, and then tell Firefly how you want it to fill the space.

As for that hair falling unnaturally on top of another subject’s hair, you can select those strands, then select the hair you want to extend and that blank space, ask Firefly to generate the rest, and you will have a full head of flowing hair.

I’m not suggesting these tools will solve every photo editing issue. There is a wealth of powerful tools in Adobe Photoshop and a shocking amount of power in Google’s AI editing tools on the Pixel 8. Plus, you can find a lot of third-party mobile apps that you can download and try. But the tools and features I’ve outlined here might do the least damage and the maximum good.

Ultimately, we want our photos to match what we see in our mind’s eye. I’m sure that’s all Kate hoped to achieve, she probably just chose the wrong tools.

The BT Group has announced a new pilot program in the UK to turn some of its street cabinets into EV chargers, the company plans to repurpose end-of-life green street cabinets in the UK and provide EV chargers for the public for their electric vehicles.

There are around 60,000 of these green street cabinets that could be repurposed as electric vehicle chargers throughout the UK, you can see what the new charger will look like in the photo above.

Etc., the startup and digital incubation arm at BT Group, today announces that it will power up its first EV charging unit built from a street cabinet traditionally used to store broadband and phone cabling. The announcement marks the first step in the rollout of new technical trials, exploring the potential to upgrade up to 60,000² cabinets to help meet government sustainability targets and decarbonise the transport system in the UK.

Developed to help solve EV charging infrastructure needs by repurposing existing street furniture, the pilots will explore how this solution could be scaled to address the lack of chargers on UK roads. With new BT Group research showing that more than a third (38%)³ would have an EV already if charging were less of an issue, and with only 53,000⁴ public EV charge points currently on UK roads. the pilot marks an important step in the journey to net-zero.

Intel joins the MLCommons AI Safety Working Group

Intel is making strides in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) safety and recently become a founding member of the AI Safety (AIS) working group, organized by MLCommons. This marks a significant step in Intel’s ongoing commitment to responsibly advancing AI technologies.

What is the MLCommons AI Safety Working Group?

The MLCommons AI Safety Working Group has a comprehensive mission to support the community in developing AI safety tests and to establish research and industry-standard benchmarks based on these tests. Their primary goal is to guide responsible development of AI systems, drawing inspiration from how computing performance benchmarks like MLPerf have helped to set concrete objectives and thereby accelerate progress. In a similar vein, the safety benchmarks developed by this working group aim to provide a clear definition of what constitutes a “safer” AI system, which could significantly speed up the development of such systems.

Another major purpose of the benchmarks is to aid consumers and corporate purchasers in making more informed decisions when selecting AI systems for specific use-cases. Given the complexity of AI technologies, these benchmarks offer a valuable resource for evaluating the safety and suitability of different systems.

Additionally, the benchmarks are designed to inform technically sound, risk-based policy regulations. This comes at a time when governments around the world are increasingly focusing on the safety of AI systems, spurred by public concern.

To accomplish these objectives, the working group has outlined four key deliverables.

They curate a pool of safety tests and work on developing better testing methodologies.
They define benchmarks for specific AI use-cases by summarizing test results in an easily understandable manner for non-experts.
They are developing a community platform that will serve as a comprehensive resource for AI safety testing, from registering tests to viewing benchmark scores.
They are working on defining a set of governance principles and policies through a multi-stakeholder process to ensure that decisions are made in a trustworthy manner. The group holds weekly meetings to discuss these topics and anyone interested in joining can sign up via their organizational email.

Intel’s participation in the AIS working group aligns with its commitment to the responsible advancement of AI technologies. The company plans to share its AI safety findings, best practices, and responsible development processes such as red-teaming and safety tests with the group. This sharing of knowledge and expertise is expected to aid in the establishment of a common set of best practices and benchmarks for the safe development and deployment of AI tools.

The initial focus of the AIS working group is to develop safety benchmarks for LLMs. This effort will build on research from Stanford University’s Center for Research on Foundation Models and its Holistic Evaluation of Language Models (HELM). Intel will also share its internal review processes used to develop AI models and tools with the AIS working group. This collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to the establishment of a common set of best practices and benchmarks for the safe development and deployment of generative AI tools leveraging LLMs.

Intel’s involvement in the MLCommons AI Safety working group is a significant step in the right direction towards ensuring the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies.
