In an effort to position itself as one of the leading platforms for custom generative AI models, AWS has announced the launch of Custom Model Import within Bedrock, its suite of enterprise-focused GenAI services.

As the name suggests, Custom Model Import will allow organizations to import and access their own generative AI models as fully managed APIs, which means they’ll get to benefit from the same infrastructure and tools that are available for existing models in Bedrock.

AWS sees the addition of custom model support as addressing a growing trend among enterprises to develop and refine their own in-house models.

AWS Bedrock now supports custom in-house models

Besides leveraging their own proprietary models, enterprises using Bedrock’s Custom Model Import will be able to use the suite’s other tools for knowledge expansion, fine-tuning and safeguarding against things like bias. In theory, it should give customers the best of both worlds.

Users will also be able to monitor and filter outputs for undesirable content like hate speech or violence, as well as assess the performance of models across various criteria.

The service is now available in preview, and it supports three of the most popular open model architectures – Flan-T5, Llama and Mistal. AWS has committed to adding more architecture support in the future.

In the same breath, AWS also revealed the general availability of Titan Image Generator and the launch of Titan Text Embeddings V2. Trained by AWS, the company says that reductions in storage and compute costs coincide with improved accuracy, making the Titan family more cost-effective for companies that don’t have the resources to develop their own models.

Meta Llama 3 foundation models have also arrived on Bedrock, with Cohere’s Command R and Command R+ models set to arrive soon.

On the whole, it’s refreshing to see AWS commit to interoperability by offering popular third-party and now in-house model support on its platform – it’s a move that could be set to jointly benefit it and its customers.

Samsung, the world’s biggest memory chip maker, has announced it is the first brand to start mass-producing 1Tb TLC 9th Gen V-NAND flash chips. TLC refers to Triple Level Cell, and the new chips can store 3-bit data in one cell.

The South Korean firm has developed the world’s smallest cell size with minimum mold thickness for its 1Tb 9th Generation V-NAND flash chips. This has increased the bit density by 1.5x compared to the previous generation chips. The cell’s surface area has also been reduced through dummy channel hole removal technology. Samsung says its new technology has also improved product quality and reliability. This was done by using cell interference avoidance and cell life extension technologies. These new chips are also the highest single-unit product that can be used in a double-stack structure.

Samsung also uses Channel Hole Etching technology to create electron pathways by stacking mold layers and maximizing fabrication productivity. It enables simultaneous drilling of the industry’s highest cell layer count in a double-stack structure. As the number of cell layers increases in a NAND flash chip, it becomes important to pierce through them. More sophisticated etching techniques are required to achieve that.

This new chip also uses Samsung’s next-generation NAND flash interface called Toggle 5.1. It increases the data input/output speeds by 33%, reaching up to 3.2Gbps. Samsung has also added support for the new PCIe 5.0 interface. Samsung has also achieved 10% higher power efficiency with its new chips.

These chips can be used in high-performance SSDs, such as the ones in the Galaxy Book 4 Ultra in our video below. They can also be used in gaming consoles, PCs, servers, and more. Samsung says it will start the mass production of QLC (Quad Level Cell) in the second half of 2024.

In order to address the evolving needs for NAND flash solutions, Samsung has pushed the boundaries in cell architecture and operational schemes for our next-generation product. Through our latest V-NAND, Samsung will continue to set the trend for the high-performance, high-density solid-state drive (SSD) market that meets the needs for the coming AI generation.“

Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Carbon line dates back to 2012, and now, in its 12th incarnation, the laptop has reached a level of maturity few other brands can boast. Today’s X1 Carbon has been honed to a fine point—yet it would be legitimately difficult to distinguish from the original. I’d know, because I reviewed it for WIRED way back when.

The song writ large remains the same as ever. This is Lenovo’s flagship ultralight, the business laptop designed to kill all others. It retains the same size 14-inch LCD (with 16:10 aspect ratio, now at 2,880 x 1,800 pixels) that it has always had, with the weight now hitting 2.2 pounds— exhibiting a healthy and steady weight loss over the years.

I measured the thickness at 21 millimeters, largely owing to a sizable rubber foot that runs along the back of the base to prop the keyboard up a bit. The current chassis, in Lenovo’s words, is made from “recycled aluminum, magnesium, aerospace-grade carbon fiber, as well as post-consumer materials that are used throughout its construction.”

Many other innovations here are incremental at best. I mean, when the brand starts talking about “new tactile markings” on the keyboard—those little bumps on the F and J keys—you know we’re getting close to an innovation terminus. There’s also a small ridge that juts out at the top of the screen where the webcam (featuring a manual shutter) appears, plus a relocated fingerprint reader, but any other cosmetic changes are tough to suss out.

The big news is under the hood, with the inclusion of the new Intel Core Ultra CPU, this model featuring an Ultra 7 155H chip running at 1.4 GHz. A small brigade of manufacturers is dropping machines with Ultra chips this month, with the big pitch being around artificial intelligence performance, better power efficiency, and improved integrated graphics. AI-driven benchmarks are still a new thing, so until I have a decent base of results to draw from, I’m reporting on my standard battery of tests that mix various business apps and graphics benchmarks.

Samsung has finally launched the Galaxy M55, and it is now available for pre-order in Brazil. It is a modified version of the Galaxy A55, and it trades some features for others to offer a better-specced phone in some regards. So what’s different compared to the Galaxy A55?

Let us check it out.

Galaxy M55 has a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip

The Galaxy M55 has a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED+ screen with Full HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It has a peak brightness of up to 1,000 nits in High Brightness Mode (HBM), but HDR brightness could be even higher. It also features stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, so it is a great package for watching videos. The phone has an in-display fingerprint reader.

It is powered by the relatively powerful Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor, which performs better than the Snapdragon 778G+ but slightly lower than the MediaTek Dimensity 7200. The phone has 8GB RAM, 256GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot. It runs Android 14 (One UI 6.0) out of the box and will get four years of Android OS updates and five years of security updates. It also features Samsung Knox Vault with EAL5+ certification.

The Galaxy M55 has a 50MP selfie camera, the highest resolution selfie camera ever on a Samsung phone. On the rear, it has a 50MP primary camera with OIS, an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 2MP macro camera. It can record 4K 30fps videos with VDIS (Electronic Image Stabilization for videos) using its front and primary rear cameras. It also has the Dual Video Recording feature, allowing you to record videos from front and rear cameras simultaneously.

A 5,000mAh battery powers the Galaxy M55, similar to the Galaxy A55. However, the Galaxy M55 one-ups the Galaxy A55 with 45W Super Fast Charging 2.0, topping up to 70% in just 30 minutes. It also features GNSS, a hybrid dual-SIM card slot, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetoo9th 5.2, NFC, and a USB Type-C port. It weighs 180g and is 7.8mm thin.

Galaxy M55 pricing and colors

The Galaxy M55 is priced at BRL 2,699.10 ($542) in Brazil and is available for pre-order from Samsung’s website. It has two color options: Dark Blue and Light Green. It could be launched in India and other nearby countries within the next few days.

We have gotten used to seeing Samsung rebranding its Galaxy A smartphones and selling them as Galaxy M and Galaxy F handsets in some markets. The Galaxy M and Galaxy F lineups aren’t replacements for their Galaxy A counterparts, but alternative options for those on tighter budgets.

If selling similar phones in three different lineups wasn’t enough, Samsung seemingly wants to add a fourth lineup to the mix. To be more precise, the company may be resurrecting an existing lineup: a phone called the Galaxy C55 is on the way, seven years after the last device in the Galaxy C series.

We have known for some time that Samsung has been working on a Galaxy C55, and the phone could be very close to its official launch, as it has made multiple appearances on the Google Play Console, the backend dashboard for Android app developers.

While the Galaxy C55 was first seen on the Google Play Console almost a week ago, the listing we’re talking about here names the device outright. Everything else is the same, once again confirming that the C55 is a rebranded version of the Galaxy M55/F55 for the Chinese market.

Most interestingly, all three handsets will use the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, a mid-range chip that was announced back in 2022. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 didn’t catch on and has only been seen on a handful of devices in nearly two years, and in 2024, it will be making its debut on Samsung-branded smartphones.

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is older than the Exynos 1480, which is used on the Galaxy A55 and has AMD-powered graphics, but it should be perfectly capable of handling all kinds of tasks. In addition to a different chip, it appears the C55, F55, and M55 may not have a variant with 12GB of RAM, though it’s not confirmed at the time of publication.

Qualcomm has been busy. But then again, when is it ever idle? Today (March 25) the company famous for its wireless solutions, software, and semiconductors has introduced two next-generation Snapdragon Sound offerings to improve the audio experience not just at the premium end of the market, but also to mid-tier earbuds (and possibly even the best budget wireless earbuds), headphones and speakers – namely, the S5 Gen 3 and S3 Gen 3 Sound platforms.

The big headlines? Let’s start with the more premium S5 Gen 3, which promises “almost 50x more AI power” (more on this later), a better digital-to-analog converter with improved signal-to-noise ratio and a 40% lower noise floor (to boast 24-bit/48kHz better-than-CD-quality sound using the more efficient Bluetooth LE Audio), and Qualcomm’s 4th-generation adaptive active noise cancellation.

S5 Gen 3 also boasts 50% more memory than the Qualcomm S5 Gen 2 Sound Platform it succeeds and, says Qualcomm, “dedicated cores for audio curation, including hearing loss compensation, ANC, transparency and noise management”. Yes, we’re looking at a future where your listening gear will not only support Auracast audio sharing (using Bluetooth 5.4), but can then tailor said broadcast to various degrees of hearing loss with ultra-low latency, in real-time.

What of that heavy uptick in AI capabilities? John Turner, Qualcomm’s Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies International, told me it’s hard to give precise user-case improvements because that’ll largely depend on what manufacturers want their products to do (Qualcomm offers solutions, engineers get to work harnessing them), but aside from the plethora of noise cancellation filters it affords, “A big advancement we’ve spoken about is getting on-device microphones to intelligently hear your voice in the office, not the voices of those around you”.

It’s something I’d truly love from my earbuds.

Entry-level headphones are set to get a lot better too

On to Qualcomm’s S3 Gen 3 proposition and here in the mid-tier arena, the firm has added support for its own Qualcomm Voice & Music Extension Program, which has been around for some time within its S5 tier but is now being made available at S3 level – for the first time.

What does this mean for buyers on a budget? Developers will be able to add perks such as fit- and hearing tests, spatial audio solutions, heart-rate monitoring, and other health-tracking options within more affordable earbuds and wireless headphones, that’s what.

Furthermore, we know that this particular S3 Gen 3 platform will initially be adopted by Vivo with announcements on incoming devices expected in the next couple of weeks. It’s a company whose smartphones have received extensive coverage from TechRadar, but its (very affordable) earbuds haven’t – yet…

Since launching its premium Snapdragon Sound S7 and S7 Pro Gen 1 platforms last October, Qualcomm tells us its extensive customer research has proven that 69% of buyers are willing to spend more to get better quality audio, 70% actively want lossless audio, 73% of customers make sure they’re getting better audio every time they buy, and – perhaps most interestingly – 68% of people want to use the same product for every use case scenario. Could this be the end to the best running headphones, when the very best wireless earbuds should be good enough for the job thank you very much? Quite possibly – because if even your most affordable earbuds can monitor your health, why would you need another pair?

Qualcomm has unveiled a new processor—Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3—for higher mid-range phones and flagship killer devices. It’s the first Snapdragon 7 series mobile processor to feature on-device AI processing, Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, and a Cortex-X4 CPU core.

OnePlus, Realme, and Sharp will be among the first smartphone brands to launch devices with the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3.

Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is a higher mid-range processor for smartphones

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 (SM7675) is fabricated on TSMC’s 4nm (N4P) process node. It is the most affordable processor from Qualcomm to feature a Cortex-X4 CPU core.

CPU

It has one Cortex-X4 CPU core clocked at 2.8GHz, four Cortex-A720 CPU cores clocked at 2.6GHz, and three Cortex-A520 CPU cores clocked at 1.9GHz. Looking at its CPU cores and their clock speeds, it is clear that the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is a trimmed-down version of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, which was launched last week.

GPU

The GPU inside the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is the Adreno 732. It can drive 4K 60Hz or QHD+ 120Hz screens. It supports Dolby Vision, HDR, HDR10+, and HLG. It supports variable refresh rates from 1Hz to 240Hz at Full HD+ resolution, and it can support a resolution of up to 8K with a 30Hz refresh rate. HDR gaming and Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0 are supported, but the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 doesn’t support ray-tracing.

AI, RAM, Storage

Qualcomm is promising a performance uplift of 15% in CPU, 45% in GPU, and 5% in power efficiency. The chip supports up to 24GB LPDDR5x RAM (quad-channel) and UFS 4.0 storage. The built-in Qualcomm Hexagon NPU can run many Large Language Models (LLMs) and Large Vision Models (LVMs) natively.

Cameras

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 has the built-in Qualcomm Spectra Cognitive ISP (triple 18-bit) that supports up to 200MP camera sensors. It can stream visuals from three 36MP camera sensors, a 64MP+36MP dual-camera setup, or one 108MP camera sensor simultaneously with zero shutter lag. It allows phones to record up to 4K 60fps HDR videos or 1080p 240fps slow-motion videos. Supported HDR formats include Dolby Vision, HDR, HDR10+, HLG, and Ultra HDR.

Advanced camera features, including Computational HDR, Multi Frame Noise Reduction, AI-based autofocus and auto-exposure, AI-based face detection, Real-Time Semantic Segmentation, and Video Super Resolution, are supported as well.

Connectivity

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 uses the Snapdragon X63 5G modem that supports mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G networks (with SA and NSA). It supports peak download speeds of up to 4.2Gbps and peak upload speeds of up to 3.5Gbps. It also supports 5G+5G Dual-SIM Dual Active connections.

Thanks to FastConnect 7800, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 is the first Snapdragon 7 series chip to support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 (with LE Audio and Auracast). Support for dual-frequency satellite-based navigation is present, and it supports Beidou, Galileo, GLONASS, GPS, NavIC, and QZSS. It supports lane-level accuracy for cars and sidewalk-level accuracy while walking.

NFC and USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C are supported as well.

Fast charging and fingerprint

It supports up to Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max fingerprint reader and Quick Charge 5 (based on USB PD) for up to 100W fast charging.

Qualcomm expects the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 processor to be used in phones priced in the $400-$600 price segment. Although, most phones powered by this chipset are expected to be launched only in China, India, and other Southeast Asian countries.

Author’s Note: The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 processor is an improvement over last year’s Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. It brings notable improvements in CPU and GPU performance but lacks ray-tracing support for games. To get that feature, consumers would have to opt for slightly higher-priced phones that use at least the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor that was launched a few days ago.

This chipset would be good enough in terms of camera performance for most users. However, enthusiasts who want features like 8K video recording would have to upgrade to phones with the Snapdragon 8 series processors. This chipset would be a great fit for phones like the Galaxy S24 FE or Galaxy S25 FE, but knowing Samsung, it might not use this processor in its phones.
