Apple showcased the family-inspired coding work of three Swift Student Challenge winners Wednesday. The iPhone giant changed up its annual coding competition this year by naming 50 students Distinguished Winners among 350 top coders overall. The 50 get to attend a special event at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC24).
“This year’s winning Swift Student Challenge submissions once again demonstrate the breadth and depth of what is possible when talented young people use coding to make their mark on the world,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations.
“We’re also incredibly proud to welcome more outstanding student developers than ever before to Apple Park to connect with our teams and each other as they continue to build apps that will no doubt transform our future for the better,” she added.
These 3 Swift Student Challenge winners sought coding inspiration from family
Elena Galluzzo, Dezmond Blair and Jawaher Shaman are among this year’s 50 Swift Student Challenge Distinguished Winners. Like many of the 350 winning students overall, who hail from 35 countries and regions worldwide, their app playgrounds are personal. Their coding inspiration came from their families.
Apple selects winners based on their app playgrounds that stand out for innovation, creativity, social impact or inclusivity. The 50 Distinguished Winners may attend a “three-day in-person experience” at Apple Park during WWDC24.
Elena Galluzzo: Care Capsule app

Toronto, Canada resident Elena Galluzzo designed her app Care Capsule to serve as an all-in-one assistant for elderly people like her grandmother.
“My grandmother is in the late stages of Alzheimer’s disease and requires full-time care,” Galluzzo said. “And it’s also hard on my grandfather because it can be quite lonely — even though he lives with his children and grandchildren, a lot of older people don’t. Canada has an aging population, so I think it’s really important to keep looking into ways we can help people in this field, and coding is one way I can contribute.”
Here’s what Apple said she did:
Galluzzo designed Care Capsule to be an all-in-one assistant for elderly people. She used Apple’s machine learning framework Create ML to build a chatbot that analyzes interactions with the user to deduce whether they are experiencing loneliness or depression. The app also lets users track their medications, connect with community resources, and keep a record of positive memories.
After Galluzzo graduates with a degree in business this spring, she hopes to publish Care Capsule on the App Store, potentially incorporating what she learns when she attends WWDC24 in June.
“Being able to meet other people who have the same passion as I do is very exciting,” said Galluzo, who is about to graduate from college with a business degree and hopes to publish Care Capsule on the App Store.
“I’m also really looking forward to seeing what new frameworks are coming out and how I could use them,” she added. “I think it’s very cool to be able to create something that can tap into your device’s native functionality and help solve important challenges at the same time.”
Dezmond Blair: MTB XTREME app
Blair’s app MTB XTREME puts users behind the handlebars of a mountain bike. Photo: Apple
Dezmond Blair’s app MTB XTREME sits more in the recreational realm. But family inspired it. It puts users on a mountain bike with 360-degree view of surrounding trails.
Michigan native Blair grew up mountain biking with his little brother. He also worked on a secondhand computer that his family could not afford to connect it to the internet.
“After growing up in a trailer park, it became really important for me to make sure that I was keeping up on all my grades because my parents told me when I was young, ‘You’re definitely not ending up like we were,’” Blair said. “They spent a lot of their life trying to make sure that I wouldn’t have to struggle the same way they did, and so that’s where my inspiration and my passion comes from.”
After landing an associate’s degree in computer programming, Blair started at the Apple Developer Academy in Detroit, where he learned Apple’s coding language, Swift, and made his iPad app. He hopes to release a more immersive version for Apple Vision Pro. He’s off to a good start, having launched a company to design app prototypes he calls Easy Dez It.
And what’s his goal in all this? It comes down to his parents.
“I want to end up buying them a house one day,” says Blair. “They’ve done so much for me and my little brother, so I have to pay it forward.”
Jawaher Shaman My Child app
Shaman created her app My Child to help children with speech conditions. Photo: Apple
Jawaher Shaman, who grew up in Saudia Arabia, now studies the Apple Developer Academy in Riyadh. As a kid, she was very close to her grandfather, but he died when she was 5 years old. She soon developed a stutter that took a long time to overcome.
She intends her winning app playground, My Child, to help others with speech conditions.
“My father never made me feel different, and I hope my app will do the same for any child or young person who suffers from stuttering,” she said. “I don’t want them to ever feel like stuttering is a hurdle they can’t overcome.”
Here’s what the app does:
My Child tells Shaman’s story through the eyes of a child who stutters, and features characters inspired by her father and grandfather. The app guides users through exercises that help slow down their breathing and prepare them for real-life experiences like reading a story in class. Shaman used AVFAudio to add sounds that mimic the way her father would break sentences into small, more manageable parts.
After graduation, Shaman will work as a programmer in Saudi Arabia, and she also wants to publish My Child on the App Store and continue creating apps that assist others.
“I hope to use technology to help children who are neurodivergent because I know what it’s like to feel different,” said Shaman, who intends to become a programmer and hopes to publish My Child on the App Store.
“Coding for me opened up a world of possibilities, and it brings me one step closer to achieving my goals, which are to help people and create a lasting impact,” she added.
Samsung has released an update to the Quick Share app for Galaxy smartphones and tablets. It bumps the version of the app to 13.6.13.6 and brings a huge feature, and that is the ability to share files with Samsung’s Family Hub lineup of refrigerators.
At the moment, there’s no information about what kind of files you can transfer from your Galaxy phone or tablet to the Family Hub refrigerators. However, we are assuming that you will be able to send only photos and videos, as those refrigerators might not support other types of files.
Now that Quick Share for Android can send files to the Family Hub refrigerators, we are assuming that Samsung has already launched or will launch the Quick Share app for those refrigerators so that they can receive files from Android devices over Quick Share.
If not, Samsung might have updated or will update the software of the Family Hub refrigerators with the ability to receive files over Quick Share. Either way, you will soon be able to quickly share photos and videos with those refrigerators and enjoy them instantly on the large display.
Being brought to tears by something other than music at a high-end speaker demo is a first. But then, Audiovector is not your average hi-fi outfit. So here I am, with no option but to dig the esteemed member of the audio press standing next to me in the ribs, dab at my mascara and mutter “I’m not crying, you’re crying!”.
What happened? Oh, we’re in Copenhagen at Audiovector‘s small but beautifully Hygge HQ, where founder Ole Kifoth just unveiled his latest masterwork, the Trapeze Reimagined (or ‘Trapeze Ri’ for short), despite being in what he calls “semi-retirement but, you know… still designing”.
We didn’t know this before we arrived, but we’re here to experience a reimagined update on the gloriously lopsided Trapeze stereo speaker Klifoth designed and launched 45 years ago, in 1979 – his first speaker. Only, that’s not the point right now. The point is that his closing remark before setting us loose to listen to it concerns neither the new purpose-designed open-back Audiovector SEC Air Motion Transformer (AMT) tweeter, nor the five-inch midrange unit, or even the 12-inch mid/bass driver within this beautifully offset arrangement. No, instead he looks over and speaks directly to his son, who stands beside him now as the CEO of the business.
“I’m fortunate enough to see the work of my life being taken over, and handled extremely well I think, so…” he slaps the younger man on the back, his voice faltering as he says simply, “Thanks, Mads”.
Not a dry eye, I tell you.
Black Ash is probably my favorite, I think… (Image credit: Audiovector)
Having pulled myself together long enough to weave in some specs on the new Trapeze Reimagined (did you see, above?) I now need to make it clear that Ole Klifoth and his son – who still live within 3km of each other – are fanatical music lovers.
Over the course of our two-day listening session (interspersed with some wine-tasting and a trip to a local restaurant where one of Mads’ friends works – hey, we gotta eat) we listen to everything from Ghost Rider to Rimsky-Korsakov; from Stone Temple Pilots to Joni Mitchell; from Prince to Alan Thwaites. We also listen to the Trapeze Reimagined hooked up to a mid-range Moon amplification system and a Gryphon combination, but the family occasionally use a Burmester integrated option “for cosy evenings here” (all of these companies are friends of the family) – and always using Audiovector cables.

When one of our party mentions a particular moment of unusual clarity, Klifoth enthuses, “yes – although actually, the quality is already there, on the table. All you have to do is release it”.
“Thank you though,” he adds, “I really tried to stay true to Dr. Oscar Heil with this AMT tweeter – for me, hard dome tweeters sound like inverted bin lids compared to it”.
‘It’s crazy, I still have the old crossover circuit in my head 45 years on – although that didn’t work for this’
Ole Klifoth is particular about the new purpose-designed open-back Audiovector SEC Air Motion Transformer (AMT) tweeter (Image credit: Future)
I ask Ole Klifoth what it was like reworking something he completed back in 1979 (which was a good year; I also made my physical debut in ’79) and how it felt becoming something of a Time Lord.
“Mads persuaded me to do it! In the beginning, I didn’t want to, actually – I thought it was not related to the other products. But he was right – he kept saying, ‘we need this icon. Dad, you have this icon that you’re not using! Do it!'”
So was the process enjoyable? “Yes, and in a way it was like going back in time, because – and this is crazy – I still have the old crossover circuit in my head, 45 years on… although that one didn’t work for this product!”
He laughs again: “I’ve spent my life playing with speakers and having fun with it so, really, they are my babies”.
I ask if he has one piece of technology or one aspect of the design he’s most proud of? “No, I have 20!” he laughs – and you can’t argue; he’s done well.
“No, that requires an explanation!” he cuts in, keen not to come off aloof: “Our company is built on building blocks, all of them building towards the same goal: to build something which is fast, precise, natural, easy to listen to and musical. It doesn’t matter whether I talk to you about grounding, or driver design, or decoupling of drivers, or any of those! Everything I do is centred around the idea of it sounding like a good concert hall or a good jazz club.”
So does the Audiovector Trapeze Ri sound like a good jazz club? During my time listening to them, it’s a yes from me – and this updated model is aided by a unique extra you won’t find in even the best stereo speakers.
Of course, there’s its particular shape, which allows the speakers’ rear cabinet to match the angles of the corners of most rooms (albeit ideally 70cm away from those) yet angle its drivers in towards a listening sweet-spot. But – and here, Ole dramatically mimes pulling something out from under his shirt sleeve, whispering conspiratorially, “well, it’s got to get better, after 45 years!” – there’s another ace up the Trapeze Reimagined’s sleeve.
‘We’re a traditional business – and I want to do it the traditional way’
Italian Walnut is also a striking finish… (Image credit: Audiovector)
I’m talking about Trapeze Reimagined’s flexible damping feature, which gives it a clear edge when pairing with different amplifiers. Audiovector suggests you select position one for transistor amps with a medium damping factor; position two for high-power transistor amps with a higher damping factor and position three for tube amps with a low damping factor. Of course, we experiment with these options (and I’d suggest you do too) but Mads is quick to reassure me there’s no right or wrong position – not if you love how it sounds.
Ole tells us later he’s never forgotten being four meters away from Stan Getz, “who was drunk and fell off the stage! Or Keith Jarrett in a small club in Denmark – hearing them was fantastic. And this is what I want to do with speakers”.
Here here, Mr. Klifoth. On the company itself, neither Ole nor his son Mads plan to change anything drastically. “We have a presence in 59 countries now, but we’re a traditional business – and I want to do it the traditional way,” Mads tells me.
The Audiovector Trapeze Reimagined is available to order now, priced €17,000 / £15,500 (which is around $19,000 or AU$28,600), so they’re hardly entry level and could easily join our regular Money No Object features. They’re available in Nordic Oak, Italian Walnut, Black Ash and White Silk – all of them intrinsically beautiful to my eye.
I say goodbye to Ole and Mads Klifoth with a few last-minute queries (audio journos are always keen to get the details right). Ole tells me, “when I started out 45 years ago, I read everything published by audio engineering societies, everything in Paris, any language. But after the theory, you know, you must have artistry. The theories are worth nothing unless they result in something that you can enjoy. Music is an international emotional language.”
He’s right, of course – and for me, Audiovector’s high-end Trapeze Reimagined are a music-lover’s dream.
AMD is introducing two new adaptive SoCs – Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 for AI-driven embedded systems, and Versal Prime Series Gen 2 for classic embedded systems.
Multi-chip solutions typically come with significant overheads but single hardware architecture isn’t fully optimized for all three AI phases – preprocessing, AI inference, and postprocessing.
To tackle these challenges, AMD has developed a single-chip heterogeneous processing solution that streamlines these processes and maximizes performance.
Early days yet
The Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 adaptive SoCs provide end-to-end acceleration for AI-driven embedded systems, which the tech giant says is built on a foundation of improved safety and security. AMD has integrated a high-performance processing system, incorporating Arm CPUs and next-generation AI Engines, with top-class programmable logic, creating a device that expertly handles all three computational phases required in embedded AI applications.
AMD says the Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 SoCs are suitable for a wide spectrum of embedded markets, including those with high-security, high-reliability, long lifecycle, and safety-critical demands. Purposes include autonomous driving, industrial PCs, autonomous robots, edge AI boxes and ultrasound, endoscopy and 3D imaging in health care.
The processing system of the integrated CPUs includes up to 8x Arm Cortex-A78AE application processors, up to 10x Arm Cortex-R52 real-time processors, and support for USB 3.2, DisplayPort 1.4, 10G Ethernet, PCIe Gen5, and more.
The devices meet ASIL D / SIL 3 operating requirements and are compliant with a range of other safety and security standards. They reportedly offer up to three times the TOPS/watt for AI inference and up to ten times the scalar compute with powerful CPUs for postprocessing.

Salil Raje, senior vice president of AMD’s Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group, said, “The demand for AI-enabled embedded applications is exploding and driving the need for solutions that bring together multiple compute engines on a single chip for the most efficient end-to-end acceleration within the power and area constraints of embedded systems. Backed by over 40 years of adaptive computing leadership in high-security, high-reliability, long-lifecycle, and safety-critical applications, these latest generation Versal devices offer high compute efficiency and performance on a single architecture that scales from the low-end to high-end.”
Early access documentation and evaluation kits for the devices are available now. The first silicon samples of Versal Series Gen 2 are expected at the start of next year, with production slated to begin late 2025.
Given the codename “Sierra Forest”, that chip will be available in the second half of this year, while customers will have to wait until next year to get their hands on its more powerful “Granite Rapids” sibling.
Intel has now rebranded its Xeon family of processors, replacing the “Xeon Scalable” name, which first hit the market in 2017 with the Xeon Platinum 8100 series, with “Xeon 6.” This new brand will include the all-efficiency (E) Sierra Forest chip and the performance (P) Granite Rapid one.
Amplify performance signals
The Sierra Forest data center chip is the first with an architecture comprised entirely of efficiency cores (E-cores), designed to deliver boost performance of 5G workloads by 2.7 times per rack, according to Intel. When it arrives, Granite Rapids (with P-cores) will build upon the doubled vRAN workload processing capacity offered by Sapphire Rapids and increase performance even further via Intel AVX and vRAN Boost.
Both Granite Rapids and Sierra Forest variants share the same platform (including the chiplet-based design, sockets. memory, and firmware) and thus will use the shared Xeon 6 nomenclature, a move which Intel hopes will make everything clearer for customers.
The company says the “evolved” Xeon 6 branding will “tell a united Intel Xeon story,” “Ease customer navigation,” and “Amplify performance signals”.
Intel’s existing “Emerald Rapids” 5th-Gen Xeon Scalable Processor models won’t see a rebrand. It has been said with the current-gen Xeon product stack that Intel’s branding can be “more than a little confusing”, and the company obviously feels it’s best to start afresh with the new Xeon 6 brand and focus on making things simpler going forward.

This is an easier way to share passwords with your friends and family. Image: Santeri Viinamäki/Wikimedia Commons/D. Griffin Jones/Cult of Mac
You can share passwords on iPhone automatically with your entire family, so you don’t have to reuse the same password everywhere or let everyone in your family know when a shared password is changed.
Setting up this feature is easy and saves the hassle of being texted “hey I can’t get into Amazon, what’s that password again?” and “I need you to send me the code.” When you set up shared passwords, two-factor authentication and passkeys are shared, too.
Note: This is a feature of iOS 17; both you and the people you share passwords with need to be running iOS 17. If you bought a new iPhone 15, you’ve already got it. Otherwise, head over to Settings > General > Software Update to install the latest version.
Time needed: 2 minutes
How to share passwords on iPhone
Create a new Shared Group
Open Settings > Passwords and authenticate with Face ID. Tap the + in the upper right corner, then tap New Shared Group and hit Continue.
Add contacts to the group
Give the group a name, like “Family Passwords.” Tap + Add People and look up one or more contacts you’d like to put in the group. Tap Create when you’ve got everyone. You can also tap Notify via Messages to let them know they now have direct access.
Add your saved passwords to the group
You should now see the group you just created. Tap the + in the toolbar to add passwords that will be shared with everyone in the group. You can search by your username or the website.
Changes and updates will synced with everyone
If you change your password in Safari or in the app, your changes will automatically sync to everyone else in the group. To change a password manually, you can always look it up in Settings > Passwords, tap on it and hit Edit. Enter in the correct password and hit Save.
Advantages of sharing passwords and passkeys on iPhone
Another great advantage of setting up password sharing on iPhone is that if you have two-factor authentication tied to a password (so long as it’s set up in iCloud), everyone you share your password with will automatically get the same codes. Your partner signing into your joint Amazon account won’t have to get the code from you.

Willie E. Gary rose from a common sharecropper son to become one of America’s most popular and influential attorneys. Gary’s rise from poverty to $50 million in net worth is nothing short of inspiring. His tenacity and skills are matched by his extraordinary determination. The movie “The Burial”, starring Jamie Foxx, immortalizes his story as a testament to the American Dream.
Willie E. Gary: Who is he?
Willie Edward Gary was born on July 12, 1947 in Eastman, Georgia. He experienced hardships at a young age. Gary grew up with ten siblings in a sharecropper family. They faced many challenges and slept in tents at times because they did not have a permanent residence. Willie was determined to overcome his situation and earned a law diploma from North Carolina Central University School of Law.
Why is he known as “The Giant Killer?”
Gary’s nickname “The Giant Killer”, is more than just a clever moniker. It’s also a testament to his skill in the courtroom. Gary has won 150 settlements worth millions of dollars for his clients. The Law Firm of Gary, Williams, Parenti, Watson, Gary & Gillespie, P.L.L.C., with over 30 attorneys, is synonymous with landmark verdicts.
