Kobo’s new ereaders include its first with color displays

Rakuten has a trio of new Kobo ereaders, including the company’s first two with color displays. On Wednesday, the company revealed the $220 Kobo Libra Colour and $150 Clara Colour alongside the monochrome $130 Clara BW. You can preorder them today, ahead of their April 30 launch.

The Kobo Libra Colour has a seven-inch E Ink Kaleido 3 display, which should have a noticeable improvement with 16 levels of grayscale, 4,096 colors and 30 percent better color saturation than E Ink’s last-gen tech. The Libra Colour is the only one of Kobo’s new ereaders with stylus support for ebook annotations and highlighting. But you’ll need to add the $70 Kobo Stylus 2 (also compatible with the Elipsa 2E) to enjoy that.

The device has a curved, “ergonomic” design with page-turn buttons. It supports portrait and landscape reading and has 32GB of storage (good for around 24,000 ebooks or 150 audiobooks). Rakuten says its battery can last up to 40 days on a single charge, but that’s for reading for 30 minutes daily with the front light at 30 percent brightness and the wireless turned off. (Expect less if you read more than that or turn the brightness higher with wireless radios on.)

Meanwhile, the six-inch Kobo Clara Colour and Clara BW forgo the Libra Colour’s page-turn buttons and stylus support in favor of more accessible pricing. The Clara BW differs from the last-gen Clara 2 (Engadget’s pick for the best ereader) with a faster processor, more storage (16GB) and the latest E Ink Carta 1300 display tech.

Rakuten says the Clara Colour and Clara BW can last up to 53 days on a charge, but that’s with half an hour of reading per day, the brightness set at a mere 10 percent and WiFi / Bluetooth off.

All three devices have ComfortLightPro for automatic blue-light adjustment. They have an IPX8 water resistance rating, making them suitable for poolside or bathtime reading. The ereaders use recycled and ocean-bound plastics in their build materials, and Rakuten has partnered with iFixit for self-repairs.

You can buy separate covers (made from recycled materials) with built-in stands for all three new devices. The Libra Colour has a standard $30 SleepCover and a $40 NoteBook SleepCover with a magnetic stylus slot. The Clara Colour and Clara BW have $30 SleepCovers and a cheaper $20 Basic SleepCover.

You can preorder the new ereaders from Rakuten Kobo starting today. The Kobo Libra Colour costs $220, the Clara Colour is priced at $150 and the monochrome Clara BW runs $130. All three devices arrive on April 30.

LG C2 smart TV tops user’s list of fave computer displays

Second, while big smart TVs used as computer displays continue to gain popularity, we don’t often hear users saying they’re one of the best they’ve ever had. But that’s the case with this LG C2 smart TV setup, used by a photographer and musician.

42-inch LG C2 smart TV works beautifully in Mac Pro setup

Photographer and Redditor johnnyphotog showcased the impressive setup in a post entitled, “Mac Pro Creation Station.” John’s Mac Pro (96GB memory, 2TB plus 16GB fast internal storage, dual 6900XT graphics with afterburner) drives a massive 42-inch LG C2 Series OLED smart TV.

On Friday, we focused on the setup’s killer Mac Pro. On Monday we look a bit more closely at that display.

Commenters showed as much or more curiosity about the big display as they did about the Mac Pro.

“Do you find any weird issues with lag/latency when using the TV as a monitor?” asked a commenter. “That was something I read that deterred me from going this route, but I kinda wish I gave it another look.”

“Nope, in fact, the LG C2 42-inch works better than most monitors I’ve used in the past!” John replied.

He even posted a video review he taped about using the smart TV as a monitor (see above). He pointed out that MacBook Pro users got HDMI 2.1 recently, meaning they can view 120Hz 4K and take great advantage of smart TVs like the C2, with its 120Hz refresh rate and 3820 x 2160p ultra HD resolution.

And of course an OLED panel like this one achieves astonishingly high contrast, with a 1 million to 1 contrast ratio and remarkably deep-black tones. The TV also incorporates Cinema HDR technology with 100% color accuracy (1 billion colors in a wide gamut). For gaming, it features a low-latency mode, Nvidia GeForce Now and a less-than 1ms response time. It’s also HomeKit and AirPlay 2 compatible. See all C2 specs here.

After a few minutes, you should be able to see the complete Samsung DeX UI, complete with taskbar, desktop, and resizeable app windows.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be thinner and lighter, feature sharper displays

The Galaxy Z Fold series has arguably been the best overall book-style foldable phone lineup in the market so far, at least for day-to-day usage. However, there are a few things where Galaxy Z Fold phones fall short: weight and thickness. The Galaxy Z Fold phones usually weigh more and are thicker than rival foldable devices.

Take the Galaxy Z Fold 5 for example. It tips the scale at 253g and is 13.4mm thick. In comparison, the OnePlus Open and the Huawei Mate X5 weigh 239g and 243g, respectively. They are 11.7mm thin and 11.1mm thin, respectively. Well, Samsung seems to have taken criticism seriously and is working on making substantial improvements to the weight and thickness of its next foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

According to two posts from tipster Ice Universe (1,2) on X/Twitter, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will weigh 239g and have a thickness of 12.1mm when folded (5.6mm when unfolded). That means the upcoming foldable phone will be 14 grams lighter and 1.3mm thinner than its predecessor. That’s a decent improvement in our books.

With that, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be in line with the likes of the OnePlus Open and the OPPO Find N3 in terms of weight and thickness. More importantly, this change will solve one of the major complaints people have with Galaxy Z Fold phones and offer a better in-hand feel. That’s not all though. The tipster also revealed some details about the phone’s internal and external displays.

Inner and outer displays will be sharper

He claimed the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will have a 7.6-inch inner display with a 7:6 ratio and a 6.3-inch outer display with a 22:9 ratio. For your reference, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a 7.6-inch inner display with a 5:6 ratio and a 6.2-inch outer display with a 23.1:9 ratio. That means the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s inner screen will be the same size as that of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 but with a shorter and wider aspect ratio. Its cover screen will be 0.1-inch larger and have a wider aspect ratio than the one on its predecessor.

Furthermore, the tipster says “The resolution of both the internal and external screens has been improved.” So, expect the inner and outer displays of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 to have a higher resolution than that of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Almost all Galaxy Z Fold 5 competitors, including the OnePlus Open, Huawei Mate X5, and Vivo X Fold 3 Pro, offer screens with higher pixel densities. So, that was another area where Samsung was behind the curve. The company seems to be fixing that as well.

The information is great news for Galaxy Z Fold fans and people waiting for the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Odd-couple dual displays suit MacBook rig [Setups]

We see many, many dual-display computer setups in our coverage, with the vast majority being two screens of the same size, whether they’re oriented differently or not. But that’s not always the case. Today’s M1 Pro MacBook Pro and Windows laptop rig sports different-size dual displays that even have different resolutions. But it works for the user, a systems engineer who works for a software developer.

M1 Pro MacBook Pro drives dual displays of different sizes and resolutions in setup

Systems engineer and Redditor Stephen Horan (u/stephotosthings) showcased the dual-display setup in a post entitled “Finishing Touches.” The setup runs a 14-inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro and an unidentified Windows laptop through an Anker 5-in-1 Thunderbolt 4 dock to a pair of external displays and other peripherals.

“I work as a system engineer for a software developer, and swap the MacBook out to a Windows laptop with the Thunderbolt dock, Bluetooth accessories [Logitech MX series mouse and mechanical keyboard],” Horan said. “Personal workflows are photo editing, AI generation, media consumption and some gaming.”

Odd-couple dual displays

On Friday we covered Horan’s M1 Pro MacBook Pro connecting through a 5-in-1 Anker Thunderbolt 4 dock to peripherals. On Monday we’ll focus in more detail on the two odd-couple, different-size dual displays displays. They’re not only different sizes, they’re different resolutions. 

The pair of displays would seem to suit Horan’s work and play, as well as his Mac and PC laptops. One is a 25-inch Dell U2520D UltraSharp 1440p monitor running at 60Hz refresh rate (Mac-friendly). The other is a 43-inch Gigabyte Aorus FV43u 4K gaming display running at 144Hz (PC friendly).

But Horan said he wouldn’t rule out upgrading to slightly bigger displays — even though one one of his is already a whopping 43 inches.

“Been working on a cleanish-but-lived-in-feeling setup for a few years,” he said. “I still wonder about going up to a 48-inch monitor and a 27-inch vertical. But if I can get my hands on a cheap LG DualUp in place of the 16:9 vertical monitor then I definitely won’t.”

Redditor FaithlessnessDry387 showcased the powerful setup in a post entitled, “You guys were right; the Magic Mouse is ass, MX Master FTW.” They run an M2 Ultra Mac Studio desktop computer with a 24-core CPU and 60-core GPU driving two 27-inch 5K resolution Studio Displays.

When asked about the desktop machine’s specs, Faith said “It’s just the regular 60 core,” as if were nothing special. Not so. Even the “entry-level” M2 Ultra Mac Studio is a screamer, with double the CPU cores of the M2 Max version to start. Cult of Mac‘s buying guide singled out Mac Studio as “best Mac for music production and photo editing.”

On Friday we covered the mouse fight Faith’s post provoked among commenters — Magic Mouse vs. Logitech MX Master 3(s). They’re two of the most popular mice among Mac users by far. Today we’ll look at Faith’s fantastic desktop computer, a base M2 Ultra Mac Studio (not pictured in the photo, but very much present).

Among Apple desktop computers, Apple’s Mac Studio sits sort of in the high middle. It’s not at the top, like the ultimate Mac Pro. But it sits above an iMac or a compact (but potent) Mac mini. Apple Drops Plans to Develop MicroLED Displays for Apple Watch

Apple has ended a project to develop microLED displays in-house, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman in a reversal of his prior reporting on the development of the technology. Apple invested billions in developing microLED displays, with plans to first add microLED to the Apple Watch Ultra.

MicroLED was too expensive and too complex for Apple to design, so Apple is now reorganizing its display engineering teams and laying off employees in the U.S. and Asia. Some of the displaced employees may be able to find other roles in the company, and others will be provided with severance.

Rumors that Apple had canceled plans for an Apple Watch with microLED first surfaced in February when supplier ams OSRAM said that a “cornerstone project” related to microLED had been canceled. Soon after, there were rumors that Apple had ended its relationship with Kulicke & Soffa, another company in the advanced display market.

Both analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Display Supply Chain Consultants confirmed that Apple had canceled work on a microLED Apple Watch after these rumors, but Gurman claimed that Apple was still working on the device. In a now-deleted tweet, Gurman said that ams OSRAM was “one supplier” on the project, and that there were several other suppliers Apple was working with. “I doubt it was canceled,” he wrote.

DigiTimes and ETNews also suggested that ams OSRAM was replaced due to a performance drop and that Apple had another supplier lined up, but it appears that information was incorrect.

MicroLED technology uses microscopic LEDs for individual pixels. It’s more energy efficient than traditional LED, offers improved contrast, and has faster response times. Colors are brighter and better, and there’s no risk of burn-in as there is with OLED. Apple is said to have abandoned the project because it was not economically viable.

Gurman claims that Apple will stick with OLED display technology for the Apple Watch “for now,” but that the company is “eyeing microLED for other projects down the road.” Apple is “identifying” potential new suppliers and processes for microLED, but it “won’t likely happen anytime soon.”

New iPad Pro Rumored to Have Matte Screen Option Like Studio Display’s Nano-Texture Glass

Apple’s next-generation iPad Pro models will be offered with a matte display option for the first time, according to the Weibo leaker known as “Instant Digital.”

The Weibo user explained that the ‌iPad Pro‌’s new matte display option will be offered in addition to the standard, glossy glass finish. It apparently features -4° to +29° of haze and may tout some kind of blue-light blocking technology to help protect the eyes. Matte screen protectors for the iPad have become extremely popular, so it is possible that Apple is trying to offer such an option at the point of purchase for those who want it.

It is not known if the matte display option will be “nano-texture” glass like on the Pro Display XDR and Studio Display, but it seems plausible. Nano-texture glass is effectively a matte finish that scatters light to minimize glare, which is ideal in environments with bright light sources. While matte screen coatings effectively reduce reflections, they also make the image slightly more dull and hazy. Nano-texture glass features an etched surface to help preserve image quality.

Nano-texture glass has only been offered on desktop displays so far. Earlier this week, Instant Digital said that the iPhone 17 will feature an anti-reflective display that is more scratch-resistant than Apple’s Ceramic Shield found on recent models. Instant Digital has a mixed track record in terms of revealing accurate information about Apple’s plans, but their claims are worth paying attention to.
