Many cities around the world are facing a congestion crisis – and where governments and local authorities have seen fit to curb emissions from CO2-belching tailpipes, the humble automobile is slowly being phased out of many urban areas.
Although the microcar is nothing new (the petrol-powered Peel P50 was launched in the early 1960s), it is experiencing something of a renaissance thanks to those traffic and pollution problems. Plus, because battery and electric motor technology is now seen as the ‘cleaner and greener’ option, most modern models have gone electric.
Renault arguably pioneered the genre with its funky Twizy, which was once the top-selling plug-in vehicle in Europe before it was phased out, while Citroen recently rekindled the microcar flame with its Ami, which remains one of the cheapest electric cars money can buy.
“In terms of mobility, we need to start thinking about how we are moving. If we think about the (modern) cars and how big and heavy they have got, this is absolutely the wrong direction. We need to be more sustainable and cars need to become smaller,” co-founder of Microlino, Merlin Ouboter, told The Fully Charged Show.
Merlin isn’t wrong, as it is not uncommon for a modern electric SUV to weigh in at the three-tonne mark, while the physical footprint of today’s vehicles has ballooned to fit with customers’ action-packed lifestyles and to accommodate the large – and often very heavy – battery packs. This simply doesn’t work when parking spaces are at a premium. Enter the microcar.
“In many cities in Spain, it is just not practical to try and drive and park a car, which is why we see such a high concentration of scooters and motorcycles,” Pablo Barrios, business development manager at EV and mobility company Silence, told me at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.
“But we also know there is demand for something that is enclosed from the weather, features creature comforts, such as air conditioning, and has storage for shopping, which is why we developed our S04 Nanocar model. It is rapidly gaining popularity throughout Europe and is often the quickest and easiest way to get around town,” he added.

Even in the US, where larger than life automobiles loom large over the landscape, microcars have started to gain traction, not least the $11,900 neighborhood electric vehicle (NEV) from start-up Eli, which now offers its Zero model in both Europe and the in the US.
With that in mind, here are some of the key players and emerging names to look out for in the microcar space…
Microlino and Microlino Lite
The Microlino is very much worth its place in this guide, not least because of its utterly adorable design.
The Swiss company behind the Micro scooter, which itself has been a craze that has swept the globe, set about designing a low-powered and equally low maintenance electric vehicle that even 14-year-olds can legally drive income markets.
It comes in two flavors, with the smallest taking inspiration from the famous Isetta Bubble Car of the 1950s. The Microlino Lite features the same front-opening ‘fridge door’ and three-wheel layout of its retro forebear, but this thoroughly modern version is powered by batteries and electric motors.
It weighs just 435kg, which means it can manage 62 miles on a single charge and topping up the batteries takes around two hours from a domestic socket. There’s also a larger 11kWh battery option (the standard is 5.5kWh) that extends the range to 180km – or 112 miles – but this takes four hours to charge.
The larger, four-wheeled Microlino has space inside for two and has a max speed of around 55mph, making it more suitable for those longer journeys. Opt for the biggest battery packs and it can cover a staggering 114 miles on a single charge.
The Microlino is already in production and on sale in a bunch of European markets, with the US the next big target. It costs €21,990 (around £19,000 / $24,000 / AU$36,500), which is expensive, but the Lite version will be offered on a lease deal in its home town of Switzerland, rather than an outright purchase. Micro suggests monthly payments of CHF149, which is about €156 / £134 or $169 / AU$259.
Silence S04 Nanocar
Proudly on display at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the Silence S04 Nanocar has rapidly been popping in markets outside of its Spanish home country, gaining popularity for its clever battery design that also works with Silence’s range of electric scooters.
These large, cuboid packs (the Nanocar requires two) boast retractable wheels, which means they can easily be removed from the vehicle in questions and dragged to a plug socket, scooter or even on the many Silence battery swap centres with ease.
The S04 costs £15,995 (around $20,000 / AU$30,000) to buy outright, but Silence is another company touting a monthly rental fee or membership package. In Spain, it’s possible to sign up and get use of both the scooters and Nanocar for one convenient price. Alternatively, Silence allows customers to buy the vehicle and then lease the battery technology to keep the cost down.
As a mode of transport, the S04 Nanocar is capable of a top speed of 52mph, can manage around 92 miles on a single charge and packs USB chargers for smartphones, enough room for luggage and operates without a key, simply requiring a smartphone app to unlock.
Eli Zero
Offering a 60-mile range and top speeds of 25mph, the diminutive Eli Zero is designed to get from A-to-B with minimal fuss and replace those quick trips to town that a scooter or moped would have likely covered – albeit with better protection from the elements, air conditioning, power steering, a rear-view camera and even an optional head unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.
Reservations have already opened in the US, despite regulations making it difficult for the Microcar to thrive due to stringent crash safety legislation. As a result, it’s only legal to drive on roads with a 35mph speed limit, for example, hence the Neighborhood Electric Vehicle categorization.
However, that doesn’t stop Eli from throwing in Bluetooth-enabled speakers, comfortable seating for two, LED headlights and a neat keyless start system. It might look like a glorified golf cart, but it’s got more in common with proper passenger cars when it comes to equipment.
Eli says it has the capacity to produce around 4,000 Zero models per year, although it is yet to reveal how much interest it has garnered so far.
Birò
Hailing from Italy, Birò takes a similar approach to small personal transport as Silence, offering quick swap battery technology in its models and highly customizable mobility solutions that range from the cheapest and simplest ways to get moving, to those that can operate in colder climates and carry more cargo.
Birò wants you to think about its products like small capacity motorcycles, with similar performance to the 50cc and 125cc scooters currently on the market.
Top speeds range from around 28mph to 40mph, but they are priced from £11,350 (around $14,000 / AU$21,500), making them far cheaper than most of the EVs currently on sale.
In Italy, there’s the option to join a membership scheme and gain access to a Birò when required, with the company offering them in ‘Big’ (two seats) or ‘Small’ (room for just one), as well as ‘Naked’ and ‘Dressed’ configurations.
Where the Microlino and Microlino Lite go big on retro design and disarmingly cute good looks, the Birò is altogether more utilitarian. Although it still offers heated windshields, a digital speedo and a smartphone holder.
In the 1980s and 1990s, writer and director Nora Ephron was the queen of the rom-com: When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail were huge movies both commercially and culturally. You’ve Got Mail reunites the Sleepless duo of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, casting them as rival bookstore owners who can’t stand each other in real life, but fall for one another anonymously online. If you were around at the time, the computer stuff will make you feel absolutely ancient (and if you weren’t, might be mildly baffling), but the movie itself has aged well and remains one of the great rom-coms from the 1990s – and makes for a great weekend watch among Netflix‘s library.
You’ve Got Mail has a star-studded cast and some killer lines
Rewatching the movie after 25 years, The Cut had some thoughts: “In 1998, it was still a little bit radical to meet your partner on the internet, especially in a chat room, but today, when rewatching You’ve Got Mail, what we really noticed feels nearly unrecognizable is the Upper West Side, the price of apartments (duh) throughout the city, and Barnes & Noble’s reputation.” And Cosmopolitan was surprised by how many familiar faces are in it: “Dave Chappelle as Hanks’ funny friend? Steve Zahn as Ryan’s co-worker? Chris Messina as a bookstore employee?”
Entertainment Weekly did the recap thing five years previously, noting that the film was inevitable after Sleepless in Seattle “grossed $126 million domestically, helped establish Nora Ephron as the most formidable female filmmaker in Hollywood, and sealed Hanks and Ryan’s reputation as the can’t-miss combo of the ’90s.” The duo were “the Tracy and Hepburn of their time. The cutest couple on the big screen today”, and Mail was “Ephron’s slickest, most polished film to date”.
As Empire put it: “You’ve Got Mail attempts to imbue cold ’90s technology with a warm fuzziness reserved for kids and kittens. And, in the face of well worn formula, it works. Kind of.”

Kindle Paperwhite
Photograph: Amazon
This price is for the Paperwhite that has ads on the lock screen. The ad-free model is discounted to $135 ($35 off). Kindles are our favorite e-readers and the Paperwhite is the best of Amazon’s lineup. It’s waterproof, with warm backlighting, and the 16 GB of storage is enough to hold thousands of books. The Signature edition offers auto-adjusting lighting and wireless charging, but isn’t on sale. If Mom doesn’t need those extras, the base Kindle is discounted to $80 ($20 off).
If your gift recipient always has spare plastic utensils in her bag, this silverware set from Cliffset includes a fork, spoon, knife, and case. Better yet, it includes a cleaning system—a refillable spray and cloth—to keep everything clean after lunch at the park.
KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer
Photograph: KitchenAid
KitchenAid stand mixers are the gold standard of kitchen equipment that should last forever. There are a ton of colors available from both Amazon and Target, but only some qualify for quick shipping. The slightly smaller, 4.5-quart version is also discounted to $240 ($90 off). That one is only available in white and black.
Click the on-page coupon to apply this discount. Papier makes some of our favorite paper planners and the company has other notebooks and journals we love, including this recipe book. Mom can write down all her signature dishes for herself, or to pass down, or it can be something you fill in together. Papier’s site offers many more cover designs, but you’d have to spend the same amount on shipping to get it by Sunday.
Aura Walden 15-inch Digital Frame
Photograph: Aura Frames
I love digital frames and they make great gifts. Aura frames are the best out there. This one is large with a 15-inch screen and your gift recipient can hang it on the wall or use the metal stand to prop it on a table. I prefer Aura’s Carver frame, which isn’t on sale, but at $149 it’s much more affordable. That one can only sit in landscape orientation, but the Mason, which is discounted to $169 ($30 off), can be rotated just like the Walden.
If your mom has an Android phone and could use a smartwatch upgrade, we love the Google Pixel Watch 2 (7/10, WIRED Recommends). It looks pretty and has helpful functions like auto-start and stop workout detection, fall detection, and Safety Check for sharing your location with emergency contacts. The redesigned Fitbit app looks much more modern too.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Wireless Headphones
Photograph: Bose
These are pricey, but they’re the best noise-canceling headphones we’ve tried (9/10, WIRED Recommends). If the mom in your life needs peace and quiet, it might be a worthy investment. Importantly, they deliver balanced and articulate sound. The sandstone color is particularly nice.
If the nearly $400 Bose headphones above are a bit much, you can still gift quality wireless headphones. These are our favorite cheap noise-canceling headphones, and they get 40 hours of battery life. They’re just a bit more fragile, and while the sound quality is great for the money, it won’t match the quality of the Bose.
Photograph: Brenda Stolyar
This viral curling iron is great for beginners. The Beachwaver B1 (8/10, WIRED Recommends) rotates, so all Mom has to do is clamp the hair, press a button, and watch as the hair automatically wraps around the wand. It’ll result in a beautiful curl. Just know it won’t work for all hair types.
A few of us on the Gear team are Bath People. If your mom is too, a bathtub caddy is a serious upgrade. She can prop up her Kindle or tablet to read or watch TV, and it holds a drink and even a candle for setting the mood. Depending on where you live, this might be delivered after the weekend, so make sure to check. If it is going to be a little late, throw in a few extras like a bath pillow, a MakeUp Eraser set, and maybe a candle in her favorite scent.
The Cheyenne supercomputer, based at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC) in Cheyenne, Wyoming, was ranked as the 20th most powerful computer in the world in 2016 – but now it’s up for sale through the US General Services Administration (GSA).
By November 2023, the 5.34-petaflops system’s ranking had slipped to 160th in the world, but it’s still a monster, able to carry out 5.34 quadrillion calculations per second. It has been put to a number of noteworthy purposes in the past, including studying weather phenomena and predicting natural disasters.
The Cheyenne Supercomputer is a monster installation made up of SGI ICE XA modules which comprises of 14 E-Cells, weighing 1,500 lbs each, and 28 water-cooled E-Racks. There are 8,064 Intel “Broadwell” Xeon processors (18-core 2.3GHz E5-2697v4) with a total count of 145,152 cores. In terms of memory, it has 313,344GB of DDR4-2400 ECC single-rank memory and 224 IB Switches. The supercomputer also comes with two air-cooled management racks, each featuring 26 1U servers.
“Repairable”
Howeer, potential buyers do need to be aware of a few issues. Firstly, the unit doesn’t come with fiber optic and CAT5/6 cabling, although the internal DAC cables within each cell are provided and will be “meticulously labeled and packaged in boxes”, and it comes with previously used PGW coolant fluid (around10 gallons per E-cell). It will need to be collected by a professional moving company and the purchaser “assumes responsibility for transferring the racks from the facility onto trucks using their equipment.”
A major red flag is that the supercomputer is worryingly listed as “repairable”. The auction page states “the system is currently experiencing maintenance limitations due to faulty quick disconnects causing water spray. Given the expense and downtime associated with rectifying this issue in the last six months of operation, it’s deemed more detrimental than the anticipated failure rate of compute nodes.
Approximately 1% of nodes experienced failure during this period, primarily attributed to DIMMs with ECC errors, which will remain unrepaired. Additionally, the system will undergo coolant drainage.”
With a couple of days to go before the auction ends, bidding currently stands at $50,085 with the reserve not yet met. Should you wish to buy a piece of supercomputer history, and have the deep pockets required to get it up and running, and the space to house it, you can put in a bid here.

The GPX Capture 7″ Wifi Photo Frame is ready to display pictures sent from your whole extended family. It’s so easy to use it makes a great gift for the non-techie mom in your life.
The touchscreen looks great, whether it’s showing images or short videos sent in from a free app.
I put digital photo frame in my home office for hands-on testing. And I love it.
GPX Capture 7″ Wifi Photo Frame review
My elderly mother-on-law missed the computer age completely. She’s never been on Facebook and doesn’t use email. She doesn’t even have a mobile phone.
But she has a digital photo frame that her family sends their pictures to. She gets up every morning looking forward to seeing what fresh images of her grandchildren and great grandchildren have been added.
With a GPX Capture 7″ Wifi Photo Frame, that could be your mother, too.
Internet-connected digital photo frame looks great
Add a photo collection to your mantle with a digital photo frame. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
A digital photo frame must include a beautiful display or it’s pointless. And the one GPX built into its product delivers. It’s bright enough that the colors aren’t muddy. And the screen offers wide viewing angles so you don’t need to be right in front of the frame for images to look good.
To be clear, the display isn’t spectacular. My iPad looks a bit better, for example. But it’s quite good enough for a screen your mom will look at occasionally, not stare at for hours.
Admittedly, 7 inches isn’t the largest display around. You can certainly find larger digital photo frames. This one is small enough to fit easily on a bedside table or a crowded desk, though.
It’s not battery powered. The device needs a connection to a power socket.
So easy to use
When testing the GPX Capture 7″ Wifi Photo Frame, I was always considering whether I’d be willing to give it to my elderly mother who has minimal skills with computers. And I absolutely would … after I set it up.
If the device is going to someone like my mom, you should handle the setup. It’s not difficult, but it’s also not something you want to walk them through on the phone. But that’s also true for every digital photo frame I’ve ever used.
Once it’s set up, the device couldn’t be simpler. It automatically flips slowly through all the images and videos it has stored. And there’s a touchscreen so the user can move back and forth through the collection at their own pace.
Pictures will come in from the family with either a portrait or landscape orientation. You can switch the digital photo frame between these just by flipping it. And the image viewing software is smart enough to fill in around images in the different orientation.
Let’s get technical
Send images to the GPX digital photo frame is easy with the Frameo app. Screenshots: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
The person using the GPX Capture 7″ Wifi Photo Frame doesn’t need any technical skills but whoever is adding the images does. At least enough to use an app.
The best way to add these is with the free Frameo application, either on iPhone or Android.
The process is simple enough. Use the app to go through the collection of pictures on your device, picking out good ones and move them to the digital photo frame over the internet/Wi-Fi.
You can not easily dump your entire photo library onto the frame, which is a good thing. The device has about 10GB of free space so it will not hold the 20,000 images you carry everywhere on your iPhone. You’ll need to go through and pick out the best — think of it as part of the gift to your mother.
Besides, the real highlight of this product is sending your mom new pictures and videos when you take them. She can see the ones from today’s ballet recital or baseball game immediately.
Multiple people can share images with the frame. You and all your siblings can send your mother pictures of her grandchildren.
Alternatively, you can copy pictures from a microSD card to the GPX digital photo frame. This is more of a hassle but it might be the best option if there’s no Wi-Fi network available.
You can send images to the GPX digital photo frame via a microSD card, too. Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac
GPX Capture 7″ Wifi Photo Frame final thoughts
Seeing how much my mother-in-law loves her digital photo frame makes me a fan of this type of device. And the one made by GPX looks great and works well.
But it’s a bit small and not the lowest cost option on the market. That said, don’t cheap out on an item you’re giving as a gift. In my testing, GPX’s product has been 100% stable. That bargain basement one you find online might cause problems for your mother — problems you’ll have to deal with.

Pricing
The list price for the GPX Capture 7″ Wifi Photo Frame is $99.99. A quick search found it available from a variety of retailers for as low as $79.
May the Fourth, also known as Star Wars day, is today and for Meta Quest 3 (or Oculus Quest 2) owners there are some far better ways to celebrate than simply watching one of the classic films. That’s because you can immerse yourself in a galaxy far far away with some stellar Star Wars VR titles.
What’s more there are some superb savings to be had on my favorite Star Wars VR game – Star Wars Pinball – right now, making it the best time to pick this title up if you haven’t already. There are others you can check out too that aren’t discounted like Vader Immortal and Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, as even at full-price there’s a lot to love about them.
Alternatively you can celebrate Star Wars day the traditional way with a marathon of the Star Wars films in order, or by reading up on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew which is set to land later this year.
Star Wars Pinball VR
Okay, okay, I know pinball won’t leave you feeling like a lightsaber-wielding badass, or a slick space pirate, but I promise you have to try this game out. If only because it’s currently massively on sale – coming in at just $8.49 / £6.79 instead of $24.99 / £19.49 just for Star Wars day.
Star Wars Pinball VR reimagines the iconic digital cabinets Zen Studios has crafted over the past few years in a full VR experience. They are situated in a fan’s dream hangout space you can decorate with collectible goodies that you unlock by getting high scores and competing challenges, and the pinball machines themselves are a delight.
They capture the retro-chic flair that real world pinball machines offer, while delivering on digital expectations by featuring interactive elements that wouldn’t be possible in real life. There are 10 total cabinets to master, but if you want to mix things up further you can explore the Career mode; it adds various restrictions and powers to your gameplay that force you to mix up your playstyle.
I’ve enjoyed this game since it first released, and will admit to almost falling over a few times because I’ve been so immersed in the game that I tried to lean on a cabinet that wasn’t there. If you haven’t tried it already you absolutely should right now, especially because it’s at a bargain price.

Vader Immortal
No villain, nor character in general, is more iconically Star Wars than Darth Vader. So what better way is there to celebrate Star Wars day than with a trilogy inspired by the Sith Lord himself.
As a smuggler who picked the wrong planet to explore – the fiery world of Mustafar which Vader calls home – you must use your lightsaber skills and latent force powers in order to survive the adventure that fate has thrust you into, including an encounter with Vader himself.
This series is far from fault-free – chief among its issues is it’s fairly brief even spread across three games – but the lightsaber combat feels exactly like you always dreamed it would. The force abilities are clunkier, but again it’ll be exactly what everyone who’s ever tried (and failed) to pull an out-of-reach object closer by willing it towards them ever wanted.
The other downside of grabbing Vader Immortal right now if you’re interested is you can only pick each entry up individually. They’re often bundled together in a package that comes with a big discount but that’s currently not the case – so if you’re not desperate to play this game today you might want to hold off until it’s on sale.
Supernatural
If you want to swing a lightsaber around – or at least something like one – and get a little fitter whirl you’re at it, then check out Supernatural. I got hooked on the VR fitness app during my month-long VR workout experiment with my Meta Quest 3, and recently I’ve been enjoying its limited time Star Wars-themed Flow sessions.
My personal favorite one is the Dark Side list because it features Duel of the Fates – it’s so much fun to do battle while this tune blasts through my headset’s speakers. But there’s also a general Star Wars and a Light Side mix if you don’t want to embrace the Sith’s teachings.
Just act fast as these Star Wars levels are leaving very soon.
Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge
If you’re less interested in being a laser sword-wielding space wizard, and would rather be like the blaster touting characters in The Mandalorian or Andor, then Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge will be right up your street.
Set in Batuu – the same location you can travel to at Disney World in Orlando Florida – you must help some familiar droids as you adventure through the wilds of this Outer Rim settlement. Once you’re done you can continue this quintessentially Star Wars story with the Last Call DLC, and if you’ve enjoyed the main game I know you’ll enjoy this expansion too.
As an extra bonus, you can additionally explore tales from Star Wars’ rich history, with short bonus IG-88 and Ady’Sun Zee (a Jedi Padawan) missions. They’re very much secondary to the main game’s plot, but they’re great minigames especially if you’re sharing the experience with friends and family who just want a quickfire burst of Star Wars.
Some of the best sci-fi movies aren’t really about the future: it’s about the here and now. And there are few better examples of that then Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The original 1956 movie may be dated in terms of its visuals, but it’s still utterly chilling in its portrayal of a world where everybody looks normal but has lost their humanity. And the 1978 remake, which you can stream on Prime Video, does a fantastic job of updating its look without losing the chills.
The remake stars Donald Sutherland and takes it from the small town America of the 1950s to late-seventies San Francisco, a setting that still feels timely today. And it shares its claustrophobic, paranoid vibe with much of the era’s American cinema, where filmmakers used movies as a queasy mirror of real-life social and societal decay. It’s not as scary now as it was at the time, but in an era of social media radicalization, it’s surprisingly current. You can go online and find pod people pretty much instantly.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a remake done right
Watching the original now it, like many movies of the 50s, feels very hammy and a little bit camp. The remake hasn’t dated so badly, and has plenty of chilling moments and a camera that prowls. Few of the reviews are online now, but many critics acclaimed the movie as a great example of a remake done right. Empire said it was “for once, a great remake, smartly executed. Great performances and a killing ending that will stay with you forever can’t hurt either”, while Time Out said that it put the movies of Brian DePalma to shame. The Wall Street Journal said it “gives remakes a good name”.
The Ringer hailed the remake as one of the scariest movies of the 1970s, calling it “a gloriously creepy metaphor for modern life.” Don’t read the review just yet if you want to avoid spoilers, as it goes into a lot of plot details. But it’s worth rewatching the movie after reading The Ringer’s description of the sound design, which is particularly clever and which, the article concludes, means that “like all the best horror movies, Invasion of the Body Snatchers builds from a whisper to a scream”.
Writing in the AV Club in a 2007 retrospective, Keith Phipps said: “Set at the intersection of post-Vietnam paranoia and the myopic introspection that became hippiedom’s most lasting cultural contribution, the Philip Kaufman-directed Invasion alternates social commentary with impeccably crafted scares.”
That social commentary is one of the reasons the film remains so successful, because it’s open to interpretation: it’s easy to see pod people in whatever social, economic or political movements you personally don’t like or understand.
