The fate of the Universe might not be as dark and empty as cosmologists have long suspected. That’s one potential implication emerging from an innovative project that has produced some of the biggest maps ever made of the Universe.
At a meeting of the American Physical Society in Sacramento, California, in early April, researchers released initial results from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), based at the Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona. DESI started mapping the Universe in 3D in 2020 and was designed to measure the elusive force, known as dark energy, that is pushing galaxies apart.
The surprising early results suggest that dark energy could be weakening over time.

“That’s really a hint that something could be happening,” says cosmologist Nathalie Palanque-Delabrouille at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, who is DESI’s spokesperson.
Although the study was based on only the first of the five years planned for data collection, it is already one of the largest maps ever made of the Universe, and it reveals the effects of dark energy across an unprecedented 11 billion years of cosmic history (DESI collaboration. Preprint at arXiv https://doi.org/mtqw; 2024).
If confirmed, the hints that dark energy might be weakening would bring the first substantial change in decades to the generally accepted theoretical model of the Universe. And if dark energy is not constant, that would hold implications for theories of how the Universe has evolved and for what its future might hold.
But researchers say that the evidence for changes in dark energy is still very uncertain. That was the overwhelming sentiment at a gathering of cosmologists on 15–16 April at the Royal Society in London. The standard cosmological model remains strong, most cosmologists agree — and has been working better and better as the years go by.
Wendy Freedman, an astronomer at the University of Chicago in Illinois, calls the hints of a weakening “tantalizing”, but says it will require a lot more data to see if they pan out. “Time will tell if they stand the test of time.”
Opposites attract
At the largest scales, the cosmos is ruled by gravity, and Einstein’s general theory of relativity allows for gravity to be repulsive as well as attractive. Whereas ordinary forms of energy — which includes the mass of matter — result in an attractive force, general relativity also predicts that some more-exotic forms of energy could produce repulsive gravity.
Dark energy was discovered in 1998, when two teams of astronomers used supernova explosions in distant galaxies to measure how the rate of cosmic expansion has changed. Their results indicated that the rate has accelerated over time, pushed by some unseen repulsive force that would later be dubbed dark energy. The name was intended to echo the equally mysterious entity known as dark matter — which is invisible but can be measured by its gravitational influence on galaxies.
The 1998 data that led to the discovery of dark energy had large error bars, and they were consistent with the simplest possible assumption: that dark energy is spread uniformly across space, earning it the name cosmological constant, or Λ. A consensus emerged around a theory called Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM), in which cosmic history is largely the result of a struggle between the pull of dark matter and the push of dark energy.

Save for small deviations that remain unexplained, all of the evidence cosmologists have collected so far has strengthened this ΛCDM model. The gold standard was set in 2013 by the Planck space mission of the European Space Agency (ESA), which mapped the relic radiation from the early Universe, called the cosmic microwave background. The data from that mission are in “exquisite” agreement with the model, says senior Planck researcher George Efstathiou, a cosmologist at the University of Cambridge, UK. The current Universe, Planck found, is about 70% dark energy, 25% dark matter and 5% ordinary matter — the stuff of stars, planets and people.
Many fates
The standard assumption of ΛCDM is that the expansion of the Universe will continue to accelerate, and that most galaxies would ultimately disappear from view. But theorists have developed hundreds of other models of dark energy; many posit that dark energy could be getting slowly diluted, and the Universe’s expansion will start to slow down. Another possibility is that dark energy is getting stronger and will ultimately rip galaxies apart.
For a long time, the hints from observations were too vague to answer even the most basic questions about dark energy: exactly how strong is it, and is it constant or slowly changing? DESI is the first in a new generation of experiments aimed at providing some answers. Others include ESA’s Euclid mission, which launched into space last year; the massive, 8-metre telescope of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory nearing completion in the Chilean Andes; and NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, scheduled to launch in 2027. Another telescope, called eROSITA, part of a Russian–German space mission, has mapped the Universe in the X-ray spectrum.
How fast is the Universe expanding? Cosmologists just got more confused
“There’s a whole slew of projects that are about to start taking data or have just started,” Palanque-Delabrouille said at the Royal Society meeting. “This is really unique in the history of cosmology.”
All of these efforts rely on mapping the distribution of matter in the Universe over vast distances, which — because of the time that light takes to reach Earth — also means over vast stretches of time. DESI does not take pictures of the sky in the way that an ordinary telescope camera does, but instead collects light from selected locations in its field of view. It does so by pointing optical fibres at objects — typically galaxies or quasars — with its 5,000 robotic arms, and routing that light to sensitive spectrographs. The spectrum of each object reveals its distance, because the farther away the object is, the faster it moves away, and the more its spectrum has ‘redshifted’ towards longer wavelengths.
To reconstruct the history of cosmic expansion from its 3D data, the DESI team uses one of the most well-established techniques in cosmology. It looks at the relic of what used to be sound waves in the primordial Universe.
As space expanded and matter cooled over time, the waves became frozen in the distribution of protons and neutrons (known collectively as baryons) across the Universe. That imprint, called baryon acoustic oscillations, or BAO, is still detectable today in how galaxies are scattered across space.
The BAO features are the largest structures in the Universe. “If we could see them individually, we would see a shell,” Palanque-Delabrouille explains. “It’s like when you throw pebbles in a lake. If you throw just one pebble, you can see its waves expanding out,” she says. “If you throw too many pebbles at once, all the ripples they produce will overlap with one another.”
Immense scope
DESI doesn’t just see the BAOs in the current Universe. Its 3D map stretches back in time, and by measuring how the average size of the features has grown over time, cosmologists can reconstruct the rate of expansion — and from that, the strength of dark energy. The instrument’s results are in principle still compatible with all the options — a dark energy that is constant, weakening or even strengthening.
At the most basic level, the DESI results provide solid confirmation of the original discovery, says Ofer Lahav, a cosmologist at University College London who is part of the DESI collaboration. “To me, it’s spectacular that you can confirm that the Universe is accelerating, and more or less get the same value people have claimed 25 years ago,” he says.
Dark-energy mapper will reconstruct 11 billion years of cosmic history
“The instruments, data and measurements are spectacular,” says Marc Kamionkowski, a theoretical cosmologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.
Kamionkowski says that he is cautious about interpreting the results as indicating that dark energy is weakening. He says that they could be an effect of the particular type of analysis the team did. Pedro Ferreira, a theoretical physicist at the University of Oxford, UK, agrees, pointing to a study he published last year with his colleague William Wolf, which called for cosmologists to change how they interpret dark-energy data (W. J. Wolf and P. G. Ferreira Phys. Rev. D108, 103519; 2023). Ferreira adds that he is pessimistic that even the coming high-powered studies together will be able to pin down a theoretical model for dark energy.
But researchers hold out hope that the extra data will point in new directions.
The standard model was created as the simplest possible theory for the Universe, but the actual physics of its contents is probably more complicated, says Eleonora Di Valentino, a cosmologist at the University of Sheffield, UK. “I don’t believe that ΛCDM can be the final answer,” she says.
Cosmologist James Peebles — a chief architect of the standard model that helped to earn him a Nobel Prize in 2019 — agrees. “I find it very difficult to imagine that ΛCDM is the end of the story,” says Peebles, who is at Princeton University in New Jersey. “It’s too simple.”

The hunt for the best turntable never truly ends – but I’m pretty sure I’ve just found a very strong contender.British founded-owned-and-run analogue hi-fi manufacturer, Avid (see the splendid Avid Volvere for reference), has launched Acutus Dark Iron, its first new turntable in six years and the first to feature a new integrated motor design.
The Acutus Dark Iron is handmade in Cambridgeshire, England, and the company tells us that its striking new darker ‘Sparkling Iron’ finish comes as a result of customer feedback – with the added benefit that it significantly reduces the cost compared to the company’s more labor-intensive chrome-finish models (although make no mistake, it still costs a pretty penny).
Key to the Acutus Dark Iron is its new motor system. Said motor is now coupled to the main chassis, which, says Avid, ensures correct drive-belt alignment even when the turntable is levelled using its adjustable feet.
Acutus Dark Iron’s high-torque AC synchronous motor boasts a “tenfold increase in power over competitive turntables”, according to its makers, and because it sports twin round-section drive belts, speed fluctuations shouldn’t be an issue either.
The power supply employs DSP technology and because it comes equipped with an 80 VA mains transformer, it functions as an integrated amplifier tailored to its own high-torque motor.
Heavy is the head that wears the crown

The Acutus Dark Iron features a hefty 10kg aluminium platter (reassuringly heavy, I always think), topped with a 10mm damping disc and a felt-composite mat, although buyers can upgrade to Avid’s precision resin mat if they wish.
This weighty platter sits upon an inverted bearing design, where a tungsten carbide ball meets a sapphire jewel. A self-lubricating sleeve ensures, according to Avid, “silent, maintenance-free operation”.

The supplied Avid single-action clamp is precision-machined from solid aluminium, but the company also offers a dual-operation upgrade for greater control over varying record thicknesses, should you own a large collection of 3mm thick records from the 1960s, say.
The Acutus Dark Iron is available to order now from Avid retailers, priced $13,000 / £10,000 / €12,000 (which is around AU$19,250). And if you’re keen on those extras, the mat upgrade is $4,000 / £3,000 / €3,500 (so approximately AU$7,700) and the clamp upgrade is $700 / £500 / €600 (in the region of AU$960) – so you’re looking at $17,700 or £13,500 for the fully souped-up offering.
Beauty is of course in the eye of the beholder and to me, it’s a beautiful thing. If money were no object, I’d be inviting it into my home tomorrow.
Proton Mail has introduced Dark Web Monitoring for its paid users, which will keep them informed of breaches or leaks they may have been affected by. If anything’s been spotted on the dark web, the feature will send out alerts that include information like what service was compromised, what personal details the attackers got (e.g. passwords, name, etc.) and recommended next steps. At launch, you’ll have to visit the Proton Mail Security Center on the web or desktop to access these alerts, but the company says email and in-app notifications are on the way.

Dark Web Monitoring is intended to be a proactive security measure. If you’ve used your Proton Mail email address to sign up for a third-party service, like a social media site, and then hackers steal user data from that service, it would let you know in a timely manner if your credentials have been compromised so you can take action (hopefully) before any harm is done. It seems a fitting move for the service, which already offers end-to-end encryption and has made privacy its main stance since the beginning. Dark Web Monitoring won’t be available to free users, though.
“While data breaches of third-party sites leading to the leak of personal information (such as your email address) can never be entirely avoided, automated early warning can help users stay vigilant and mitigate worse side effects such as identity theft,” said Eamonn Maguire, Head of Anti-Abuse and Account Security at Proton.
Dark Matter, one of the best sci-fi novels of the decade, is about to become an Apple TV+ series. It’s a thriller about a man lost in the multiverse trying to find his original universe, and stars Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly.

Dark Matter brings a bestseller to Apple TV+
Apple TV+ is building a reputation for brilliantly adapting popular sci-fi novels into series. Silo and Foundation are two excellent examples. Which is why there’s so much potential in the upcoming adaptation of Dark Matter, the bestselling novel by Blake Crouch.
For those who haven’t read the book, Apple’s description of its series says,
“Dark Matter is a story about the road not taken. The series follows Jason Dessen (played by Edgerton), a physicist, professor and family man who — one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago — is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns to nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.”

Top talent matters
The two lead actors in Dark Matter bring plenty of experience.
Joel Edgerton is quite famous in his home country of Australia, and is known around the world for playing Owen Lars in several Star Wars films and series.
Jennifer Connelly has had a long career dating back to Labyrinth in 1986. Other highlights include Mulholland Falls, Dark City and A Beautiful Mind — for which she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
Also staring in the series are Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi and Oakes Fegley.
Coming toApple TV+ in May
Dark Matter will premiere globally on Apple TV+ with the first two episodes on May 8. These will be followed by one new episode every Wednesday through June 26. There’ll be nine in total.
Watching comes with a subscription to Apple TV+. The service costs $9.99 per month, with a seven-day free trial. You also can watch it via any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle.
The streaming video service also includes much more, of course. Apple produces an array of generally highly rated movies and series. That includes dramas, comedies, musicals, children’s shows, nature documentaries, etc.
In the last few decades, technology has created a modern digital workforce that is technically skilled and adept at finding innovative solutions that would help them succeed at work. However, with 95% of employees struggling with digital friction in the workplace – including a lack of access to the right tools – ambitious employees who are hungry for results have often needed to explore fixes outside the scope of existing systems provided by their employers.
On top of that, the popularity of cloud-based apps has resulted in business processes often ending up fragmented across various systems, requiring workers to devote time to manual maintenance. This has accelerated the spread of (the unnecessarily ominous sounding) ‘shadow IT’, or applications that savvy workers use without official authorization to help them bypass limitations and get work done. In a perfect world, a balance can be struck between giving these technically skilled workers freedom to integrate and optimize processes while ensuring IT remains in charge of technology at the architectural level.
The traditional approach of tightly controlled IT landscapes within organizations doesn’t work as well as it once did given the proliferation of systems for just about every task, which has made it unsustainable for IT to do it all in many cases. Shadow IT is a natural evolution born from workers growing more comfortable with digital tools and looks like it’s here to stay, with Gartner finding it makes up 30-40% of all IT spending across large enterprises even though research shows nearly seven in ten organizations have been compromised as a result of it.
That said, there is ample opportunity to take advantage of and nurture a new generation of strategic business technologists. Organizations that can master this shift will benefit in a bevvy of ways en route to better business outcomes and positive impact on customer and employee experience.

Flipping the narrative
For tech and business leaders, shadow IT is not only a risk, but also an opportunity to take off the strain of IT departments. The possibility of adept workers identifying and resolving application issues relieves IT of the need to develop solutions and integrate them on an organizational level. Rather than bearing the burden of finding or building new solutions on their own, tech leaders can instead take a more strategic, supervisory role by overseeing how applications recommended by workers are integrated with existing enterprise architectures.
This is especially critical to take into account the generational differences emerging within the modern workforce, given that digital natives (those who have grown up in a tech-led world) are starting to play a larger role. Business leaders can empower these younger workers to be part of decisions about the technology business uses and help upskill less technically adept colleagues. This also helps in addressing skills gaps that the IT industry is facing.
A transparent approach, where employees aren’t secretly leaning on unauthorized applications out of sight, will help shore up cybersecurity vulnerabilities while also providing these de facto business technologists (those who sit outside IT but have the skills to ensure their organization gets the most value from its technology investments), the freedom to find and implement solutions that truly work.

Creating an integration-first culture
As a next step, business leaders need to focus on uncovering the underlying motivations behind the use of shadow IT. Often, it’s about effectively finding workarounds to common data integration problems, like systems not being updated in real-time and needing manual inputs. Companies should work on developing a cohesive plan for recommending, testing, and finally adopting IT applications that align with their strategy, goals and existing application portfolio.
The repercussions of imprecise and mismatched data can be significant, with The Alan Turing Institute estimating that poor data quality costs the UK economy £10-20 billion annually. Organizations will increasingly rely on data to inform decision-making, particularly as they scale, however, data silos create barriers that hinder collaboration, creativity, and progress. Once, as a result of great transparency, IT teams become aware of applications being used and their purposes, they can work on integrating them more efficiently.
This enhances the speed and precision with which business decisions can be made, owing to better availability and timeliness of data.
Emerging from the shadows
Taming shadow IT will increase in importance as it becomes more widespread: Gartner predicts 75% of all employees will use some form of it by 2027.
Leveraging business technologists is an essential way for companies looking to stay ahead of the curve. With many already adept at automating workflows, they have the potential to fill the tech skill gaps so many businesses are struggling to address. While they may not possess all the necessary abilities, considering a lack of options on the market an effective middle-ground would be to pair these technically proficient employees with low- or no-code platforms, easing the burden on stretched IT teams. IT teams will stay at the helm of wider tech strategy, but as business technologists will ultimately have the most hands-on experience and will know where gaps in technology lie within the business, they will be invaluable in finding solutions if their skills are nurtured correctly.
As businesses adopt more and more cloud-based applications, the biggest winners will be those that can stay ahead of the curve and look at shadow IT as a fast-track to a more innovative and integrated approach to business technology
