Roundup: Retro Computers In Your Browser

Roundup: Retro Computers In Your Browser

There are two things that keep me from expanding my collection of old computers: the cost and the space needed to store them. I have an old original TRS-80 and an old serial station (see video below). However, she abandons Data General's equipment and loses her old 1802 COSMAC Elf due to flooding. There have been many copies of older computers with varying degrees of accuracy, and they tend to be cheaper and smaller than the originals. I have an Altair replica, an Elf replica and a KIM-1 replica.

However, the cost and expense of real and replicas is hard to justify. The situation is even worse with really large machines, some of which require special power or cooling and are difficult to maintain. Another option, of course, is software emulation. Options like SIMH and Hercules work well, but they aren't always graphic and require a lot of work to set up a machine to play for hours or show a student how it was done in the good old days.

On the other hand, there are some older PC emulators that run right in your browser. No software to install, no hardware to set up, and a lot of it is graphics related. I know a lot of people don't want to post their work on a "cloud service", but I'm willing to risk a 30-line BASIC program guessing your number.

  • PC/OSI are actually two different emulators, one for the IBM PC (which I can hardly call an old PC) and the other for the Ohio Scientific Challenger 1P. The site has many ready-made demos (including Windows 1.0) and you can also set up your own. Or maybe you prefer to play Wolfenstein and other games.
  • Mac – If you don't like Windows, you might like Mac OS 7.
  • Amiga. The Amiga had many features ahead of its time and you can try the Amiga 500 here.
  • I still have the TRS-80 – Model III, but you can play VR in your browser.
  • COSMAC Elf – The COSMAC Elf was the first computer I personally owned and this site contains a very detailed graphical version of the system along with some extras.
  • KIM-1 was a very useful single computer that deployed the KIM 6502. This version of the browser gives you the feel of an old hobbyist computer.
  • Altair – You need Java, but this emulator allows you to experience a computer that can start the home and hobby computer market.
  • PDP/11 – Before Linux, there was Unix. This page allows you to run Unix 6 on a virtual PDP/11. The sixth version is so old that you should know that the cd command didn't exist yet (try chdir). Use the # key to go back and the @ key to delete a line (imagine you are using a vulture typewriter). If you are tired of capital letters, read the link on the site.
  • EDSAC – Dr. Wilkes' EDSAC was one of the first modern computers to actually work. His team at Cambridge developed many of the approaches we take for granted today. This is a rare machine that can be programmed and you can refer to your computer emulator manual for more on how to program it.
  • ENIAC. If you're having trouble programming EDSAC, try this (but you'll need a Java-enabled browser).

I'm sure there are others, but this is enough to get you started and I'm sure others will pick up on the comments. If you want to evaluate the difference between loading a web page and loading it on a real device, you can compare a PDP/11 recording with a real recording. There are also sites to connect to real old hardware, which can be the best of both worlds. For another crossover (modern simulator and old serial station) you can watch my video below where I try to save the galaxy from the Klingons.

Rock, Paper, Scissors: Searching For Stronger Nonlocality Using Quantum Computers

Rock, Paper, Scissors: Searching For Stronger Nonlocality Using Quantum Computers

The 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Alan Aspect, John Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger for their work on "quantum nonsense" in quantum mechanics. Quantum spacelessness is a phenomenon where connected particles can instantly interact with each other regardless of distance.

Imagine you have a pair of gloves. These gloves form a pair and are therefore connected in a certain way, albeit in different ways. One day you will pack one glove in a suitcase and go on a trip to another country, while the other glove will stay at home. If you are not a resident of Quantum, if you change the color of the gloves you brought, the gloves you take home will immediately change color, even if they are very different.

Decentering violates most concepts predicted by classical physics, where particle properties are predetermined and changes occur either directly through physical interactions or through high-speed diffusion fields. Decentralization has far-reaching implications for understanding the future development of realism, quantum mechanics, and quantum technology.

There are many ways to describe and explain nothingness. For example, a set of mathematical expressions called Bell's and CHSH's inequalities show nonexpansion through inequality violation. Meanwhile, Lucien Hardy provided an alternative explanation for quantum delocalization in 1992 when he developed Hardy's paradox.

Suppose there are three quantities A, B, C, A is greater than B and B is greater than C. As a fundamental mathematical property of transitivity (or local hidden variable theories in physics), this is intuitively greater than C

However, Hardy points out that C can still be larger than A. In other words, it is non-locality.

You can evaluate it with "rock-paper-scissors". Obviously rock can meet scissors and rock can meet paper but not rock. Mixing does not fit into any mathematical concept, therefore it is paradoxical.

A recent study published in the journal Physical Review A provides some interesting information about Hardy's site. Co-author of the study, Dr. Lee Bin Ho of the Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences (FRIS) at Tohoku University.

The lieutenant said: “Hardy delocalization has important implications for understanding fundamental quantum mechanics and is the key to enhancing the possibility of delocalization. We used computers and quantum techniques to improve the probability of measuring the nonlocal Hardy state."

Lee and colleagues did this by proposing a theoretical framework for finding nonlocal maximum likelihood. They confirmed this with a theoretical model and quantum simulations.

Although previous studies have shown the opposite, they found that the probability of non-localization increases with the number of articles. This shows that quantum effects persist on large scales, further challenging the theories of physics.

According to Lu, these results have important implications for understanding quantum mechanics and its potential applications in communications. "Understanding the non-existence of quanta will lead to some very exciting technological developments, such as the secure transfer of data over non-local resources using quantum communication."

Scientist Predicts Humans Can Upload Deceased Family, Friends To Their Computers By The End Of The Year

“Start keeping regular records of your parents, elders and loved ones,” says the doctor. Prateik Desai, founder of several AI platforms, in a Twitter thread Sunday. “With enough transcription data, new speech synthesis and video models, there is a 100% chance they will stay with you forever after leaving the physical body. It should also be possible later this year."

Experts who spoke to Fox News Digital had mixed reactions to Dr. Desai, with some questioning the moral and philosophical factors involved in creating the tool, while others downplayed the development's potential.

CHATGPT can be found EVERYWHERE, NOW IN HOUSE OF WORSHIP

Software engineer and author Drew Romero agrees with Mendoza's point of view, saying that making digital copies of people who have died has serious ethical, legal, and social implications to consider, such as privacy, consent, authenticity, and cultural norms.

He added that Desai's claims were "highly speculative" and "not supported by current technology and research."

"Literally, if I die — and I collect this data — people can come or my child, they can come and talk to my avatar, my movements, my voice," Sychev told VICE. “You will meet someone. And maybe, for the first 10 minutes of conversation with this person, you won't know that it's actually HE. That's the point."

Meanwhile, South Korean AI video production company DeepBrain has created a program called Memory, a virtual human service that uses AI to recreate deceased clients' family members, "simulating every aspect of them, from their physique to their voice." .

In 2019, California-based company HereAfter AI created the first app that lets family and friends save "memories" of your life and interact with a virtual version of you.

The emerging business idea has been compared to an episode of the British science fiction anthology series Black Mirror entitled "Be Right Back". The episode tells the story of Martha, a young Irish woman whose boyfriend is killed in a car accident. To deal with her grief, Martha reluctantly contacts a company that allows her to communicate with an artificial intelligence imitating her lost love.

Innovating Quantum Computers With Fluxonium Processors

Innovating Quantum Computers With Fluxonium Processors

Next-generation quantum devices require highly error-prone configurations. In response to this need, AQT researchers at Berkeley Lab's state-of-the-art collaborative research laboratory have developed a new quantum processor design based on "Fluxonium" qubits. Fluxonium qubits can outperform commonly used superconducting qubits and open a promising path to universal fault-tolerant quantum computers.

In collaboration with researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and Yale, the AQT team is pioneering systematic theoretical studies on the design of high-performance fluxonium qubits and providing practical recommendations for adapting and building state-of-the-art hardware. Realizing the potential of quantum computing. . The results were published in the journal PRX Quantum .

At the forefront of superconductor processing

Superconducting quantum processors consist of multiple qubits with different transition frequencies that enable precise control of individual qubits and their interactions. Transmon qubits, one of the most widely used in the superconducting processor industry, typically have low anharmonicity. Anharmonicity is the difference between the respective transition frequencies in the qubits. Low anharmonicity contributes to the spectral density (when the qubit frequencies are correlated with each other), which makes the processor difficult to control as the qubit frequencies are tightly controlled.

Conversely, high anharmonicity allows researchers to better control the qubit, because there is less overlap between the frequencies that drive the qubit and the frequencies that drive the qubit to higher energy levels. Fluxonium qubits have intrinsic advantages for complex superconducting processors such as B. high anharmonicity, long coherence time, and easy control.

Building on AQT's strong R&D history in superconducting circuits, the team behind the Fluxonium-based architecture focuses on the scalability and adaptability of core processor components, a number of parameters that allow researchers to improve the runtime and reliability of quantum-enhancer circuits. . Some of these tweaks make the system easier to use. For example, researchers have proposed to control fluxonium qubits at low frequency (1 GHz) by using microwaves directly generated by generators of random electric currents. This practical approach allows researchers to dynamically design processors and control multiple qubits.

Flexible Fluxonium Qubit Approach for Large Devices

Long Bi Nguyen is a project scientist at AQT and lead author of the publication. Nguyen began researching alternative superconducting qubits as a graduate student at the University of Maryland in collaboration with Professor Vladimir Manucharian. Manucharyan introduced fluxonium qubits to the field a decade ago, and in 2019, Nguyen demonstrated the possibility of longer entanglement using fluxonium rings. The Fluxonium circuit consists of three components: a capacitor, a Josephson junction, and a superinductor, which helps to reject magnetic flux noise, a typical source of unwanted interference that affects overpowered qubits and causes imbalance.

"I've always wanted to learn new physics and I focused on Fluxonium because it seemed like a better alternative to transmons at the time. It had three circuit components that I could play with to get the spectrum I wanted. He could design it. Avoid 'inconsistencies due to material defects.'" And I recently realized that adding fluxonium could be more cost-effective because the interactions between individual qubits can be demonstrated with high precision,” explains Nguyen.

To evaluate and verify the performance of the proposed Fluxonium design, the AQT team collaborated with the paper's researchers to simulate two types of programmable quantum logic gates: NIE (cross-resonance controlled NIE) and AC-controlled differential. Stark-Z (CZ). The high fidelity simulation of the gates in the proposed qubit measurement range validates the team's hopes for the proposed design.

"Using standard methods and practices for using variable-frequency logic gates, we present a potential way to build fluxonium processors. We hope for further research and development in fluxonium and superconducting qubit options for next-generation devices for quantum information processing." Nguyen said.

Ultrathin Superconducting Ink Could Be Used In Quantum Computers

Ultrathin Superconducting Ink Could Be Used In Quantum Computers

Superconducting inks that can be printed on surfaces in single-molecule layers could be useful for building quantum computer circuits. Tungsten disulfide inks are more stable than other superconducting inks and easier to manufacture, which bodes well for future applications.

When a material is superconducting, electricity can flow through it without resistance, making it a very efficient way to transfer energy. Superconducting materials also have unique magnetic properties, but they are usually difficult to fabricate and break down when exposed to air or at temperatures well below absolute zero.

Princeton University's Xiaoyu Song and Leslie Shoop and their colleagues produced tungsten disulfide ink using a process called chemical exfoliation. They started with a material made of alternating layers of tungsten and potassium disulfide. “Imagine you have a pancake cake. you have all these pancakes stacked on top of each other with custard in between. Tungsten disulfide is the pancake and potassium is the filler,” Song said. When the multilayer components are placed in dilute sulfuric acid, it is similar to immersing a cookie in water; the potassium dissolves, leaving only a thin layer of tungsten disulfide.

When the acid and traces of potassium washed away, the researchers were left with a thin layer of tungsten suspended in the water. This solution can be printed on a glass, plastic, or silicon substrate by creating a one-molecule-thick layer of tungsten disulfide.

Printed images are stable for at least 30 days under ambient conditions without enclosure or protective coating. When cooled below 7.3 Kelvin (-266 °C), the ink becomes superconducting even without a cap. "You can take it with you or let it sit at room temperature and then just refrigerate it," says Shoup. “But that requires liquid helium. unfortunately, this is not possible in a home refrigerator."

This process is much simpler than that used for other superconducting inks, which require a protective coating to prevent degradation over time. This could facilitate industrial production of these inks, although their temperature requirements hinder some potential applications. "It could still be useful for things that are already cooling, like a quantum computer or an MRI machine, where you've already cooled your system significantly," Shoup said. In the future, the researchers hope that this method can be used to produce superconducting inks at higher temperatures.

HP Computers

HP Computers

I am disgusted at how bad the customer service is to help with repairs, I have been an HP customer for over 20 years, bought over 400 computers/laptops and have never had such bad customer service in my life. I started an issue 4 months ago and have received nothing but emails to troubleshoot why my computer is overheating.

They sent me to my house saying the computer was overheating and obviously needed a new case. This is a common problem with the OMEN 30L, especially the 3080/3090. When I try to record a video, the computer is very noisy and I can't record with any sound quality, the noise is so loud that the only way I can use it is to open the enclosure with a fan to cool it down. They finally called me and said they didn't trust the tech they sent and wanted to check. Remember, the technician was sent to my home, not the one I brought to look at it.

I sent the desktop to HP for another test, the technician called me back and said "yeah your computer is running really fast and has no applications". Then I received an email from the technician telling me that someone would call me. The email simply stated that since no problems were found with the computer, the desktop would be returned to me. Then the computer was installed and sent to me without anyone talking to me or trying to fix the problem. The problem remains: the computer overheats and becomes unusable. I need someone higher up to help me with this and I have been dealing with this company and such poor customer service. Both technicians told me that this was a known issue with the 30L and that HP could not fix it under their warranty. I am done with this company and will make sure my over 11.4 million followers know more about HP and how they treat their customers.

Best Computers For Seniors Of 2023

When buying a laptop for an elderly person, it is important to consider their individual needs. What are their limits ? How do they usually use the computer? Answering these questions can help you find the best option for your loved one.

Physical disability

A laptop with a touchscreen and full-size keyboard is ideal for users with arthritis or sore hands. Touchscreens require less dexterity and can support the use of on-screen keyboards, says Macaulee Cassaday, founder of Cyber-Seniors, a nonprofit that provides free technology training for seniors. Voice typing assistance can reduce or completely eliminate the need for manual typing and is available in the accessibility settings of most devices.

Stay in touch with your loved ones

With an easy-to-navigate menu, voice recording, and video chat, you'll enjoy keeping in touch with friends and family with Jitterbug Smart3. The smartphone also works to protect you with an emergency response feature that connects you directly to officers.

Check out the sound quality on the built-in speakers, as well as Bluetooth accessibility for hearing-impaired seniors. Some modern hearing aids can be synced with a laptop via Bluetooth.

Visually impaired users should select a larger screen and use accessibility settings for additional assistance. Macaulee added that these options include a screen reader that reads text aloud, color settings to help the visually impaired, a color keyboard, and display options (if the device has a touchscreen). .

How the computer will be used

If internet activities such as video chatting and streaming are a priority, ease of use and convenience should be top priorities when buying a computer for seniors. More advanced processing and storage capabilities are available with more expensive options.

Storage

Storage requirements vary greatly from user to user. For example, if a user wants to store a large number of photos and videos, he will need more storage space. If users just want to video chat with others or stream shows and movies, there is no need to store data and a very small memory option suffices.

If you need additional storage, you can purchase cloud storage on your device.

Ease of use

When shopping for a new computer, look for options that use the same platforms users are familiar with, Cassaday says. For example, old Windows users may find it easier to upgrade to a Windows laptop than to learn a new operating system.

"Personally, I'm a fan of Apple devices," Cassaday says. "I found the accessibility settings and ease of use absolutely amazing, especially for older people."

When it comes to supporting the use of technology, local senior and community centers, universities and libraries often offer basic computer classes for seniors, while non-profit organizations companies like Cyber-Senior offer free phone or Zoom support and training.

Dimensions and weight

Lightweight devices make it easier to avoid stressful or stressful situations like arthritis. Laptops weigh between 2 and 8 pounds, so buying a lighter device is a good idea for users with arthritis. The weight of any device must be clearly stated on the packaging or online product description.

Balance

The price of laptops usually ranges from 200 to 3000 dollars. According to Cassady, if you choose a cheaper device, you're less likely to encounter issues like virus vulnerabilities, slower processing speeds, and keyboard or trackpad issues.

If low cost is important to your purchase, she suggests looking at older or refurbished high-end laptop models, which are usually midrange or more expensive.
