The new iPad Pro and iPad Air models unveiled this week do not include Apple stickers in the box, as a result of Apple’s commitment to removing all plastic from its product packaging, according to an Apple Store memo obtained by 9to5Mac.
If you really want a sticker, the report said you can still ask an employee for one while purchasing a new iPad Pro or iPad Air at an Apple Store.
Apple also does not include stickers with the Vision Pro headset, but the new MacBook Air models released in March do come with them, so it appears that Apple is still in the process of gradually phasing out Apple stickers in the box for its latest products.
Apple previously announced that it aimed to achieve plastic-free packaging by 2025.

May 6, 1998: Steve Jobs unveils the iMac G3, a brightly colored, translucent computer that will help save Apple. Coming just 10 months after Jobs’ new management team takes over, the original iMac launch loudly announces that the days of Apple quietly fading into the background are over.
The colorful computer marks the start of a very successful run for Cupertino.
Original iMac launch: A computer from a good planet
It’s difficult to overstate just how different the iMac looked when compared to other computers at the time. Next to the gray or beige boxes built by rivals, it really stood out.
The designer responsible for the iMac G3 was Jony Ive, then just 31 years old. Ive had been at Apple for several years before Jobs’ return, but he was on the verge of quitting. Instead, he found so much in common with Jobs that his planned resignation turned into the pair developing a breakthrough new machine.
The iMac G3 was very much an update of the philosophy that drove the original Macintosh in 1984. At the time, Apple’s most affordable computer cost $2,000, almost twice what a typical Windows PC ran. Jobs initially wanted something stripped-down and affordable, through which users could access the internet.
However, just as happened with the original Mac, the project became more ambitious and morphed into a statement computer. With its translucent sea-blue design (named Bondi Blue after the water at an Australian beach), the iMac G3 looked accessible and easy to use.
Not everyone liked it, though. Some people thought it looked too toylike, especially with its terrible “hockey puck” mouse. But everyone acknowledged its distinctiveness.
The “hockey puck” mouse did not find many fans. Photo: Apple
iMac G3 specs: A smash hit for Apple
In terms of specs, the iMac G3 boasted a 233 MHz PowerPC 750 (G3) processor, 32MB of RAM, a 4GB EIDE hard drive, and a choice of either ATI Rage IIc graphics with 2MB of VRAM or ATI Rage Pro Turbo graphics with 6MB of VRAM.
Two other pieces of iMac G3 hardware also merit a mention. The machine came with a built-in telephone modem at a time when most computers included these only as optional extras.
It also, notably, didn’t come with a floppy disk drive at a time when this was standard. Like Apple’s elimination of the 3.5mm headphone jack from the iPhone years later, this caused an uproar — until everyone realized Cupertino made the right call.
The iMac went on sale in August 1998 a few months after Jobs’ unveiling. By this time, the all-in-one computer had racked up 150,000 preorders. The high level of interest drove Apple’s stock price to more than $40. This marked its highest point in three years.
Apple moved away from the ultra-colorful look a couple of years later, beginning with the distinctive white iPod. For years, the look most associated with the modern iMac was a single thin slab of aluminum.
In 2021, Apple launched the first iMac powered by the company’s speedy (and proprietary) M1 chip. Aside from a giant performance boost from the Apple silicon, the first M1 iMacs also ushered in a top-to-bottom redesign. And they came in seven different colors — a throwback to when the Bondi Blue iMac G3 was the coolest computer around.
Did you own the iMac G3? What did you think of it when you first saw it? Let us know in the comments below.
At MemCon 2024, Samsung showcased its latest HBM3E technology, talked about its future HBM4 plans, and unveiled the CXL Memory Module Box, also known as CMM-B, the latest addition to its Compute Express Link (CXL) memory module portfolio.
CMM-B is essentially a memory pooling appliance for rack computing leveraging CXL. It supports disaggregated memory allocation, allowing memory capacity available in remote locations to be shared across multiple servers. Through this, CMM-B enables independent resource allocation in the rack cluster and allows for larger pools of memory to be assigned as needed. With up to 60GB/s bandwidth, Samsung says CMM-B is ideal for applications like AI, in-memory databases, and data analytics.
CMM-B can accommodate eight E3.S form factor CMM-D (PCIe Gen5) memory modules for a total of 2TB. CMM-D memory integrates Samsung’s DRAM technology with the CXL open standard interface to deliver efficient, low-latency connectivity between the CPU and memory expansion devices.
Easy setup
Samsung says the CMM-B integrates seamlessly into Supermicro Plug and Play Rack Scale Solutions, ensuring not only faster productivity but also reduced total cost of ownership (TCO).
The CMM-B module comes pre-installed with Samsung’s Cognos Management Console (SCMC) software, which provides an intuitive interface for quick setup of the Rack-Scale server appliance. This software facilitates dynamic memory allocation, enabling memory to be allocated independently of the server to which it is attached.
During his keynote at MemCon, Jin-Hyeok Choi, Corporate Executive Vice President, Device Solutions Research America – Memory at Samsung Electronics said, “AI innovation cannot continue without memory technology innovation. As the market leader in memory, Samsung is proud to continue advancing innovation – from the industry’s most advanced CMM-B technology, to powerful memory solutions like HBM3E for high-performance computing and demanding AI applications. We are committed to collaborating with our partners and serving our customers to unlock the full potential of the AI era together.”

Apple retail stores are now receiving information about the company’s new system for wirelessly updating iPhone software prior to sale, iGen reports.
Last week, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurmanreported that the new proprietary system, called “Presto,” will begin operation across the U.S. in April. Gurman first reported on the wireless system in October, describing it as a “proprietary pad-like device” upon which retail store staff can place a sealed iPhone box. The system wirelessly turns on the iPhone inside, updates its software to the latest available version, and then powers it off.
Presto features small lockers that can accommodate six iPhone boxes simultaneously. There are markings to ensure that boxes are correctly positioned for NFC depending on their size. Once correctly positioned, the iPhone will update within 15 to 30 minutes. iGen has now shared a still from a video showing two of the machines stacked one on top of the other:
Presto was developed by Apple’s Backstage Operations team, which designs tools for technicians and retail store employees. The company developed “Presto” as a way to avoid selling iPhones in retail stores with outdated software. For example, the iPhone 15 series shipped with iOS 17, but Apple subsequently released iOS 17.0.1 before the devices launched. The update was required to fix an issue that prevented the transfer of data directly from another iPhone during the initial setup process.
Apple apparently intends to have the technology in all U.S. retail stores by early summer. Retail locations outside the U.S. are also now receiving information about how Presto works.
iOS 18 will give iPhone users greater control over Home Screen app icon arrangement, according to sources familiar with the matter. Think about the last time you saw a person lugging around a Bluetooth speaker and thought to yourself, “Dang, that person looks cool. I want to listen to whatever they’re listening to!” If you have no such memory, you’re not to blame, and you’re certainly not alone. Many portable speakers are dorky hunks of plastic that are aesthetically adjacent to pleather trench coats, mall swords and TJ Maxx hoverboards. And then there are the units that actually sound good, which—with a few exceptions—rank in the looks department between perfunctory and obnoxious.
Iconic guitar amp makers like Fender, Vox, and Marshall have noticed this hole in the market and have plugged it with their own offerings. Marketed as stylish sound cubes bursting with punchy midrange and timeless rocker swag, models like the Fender Indio ($379) and the Marshall Kilburn II ($399) promised to sound just as good as they looked. Now your cool uncle who sleeps on a waterbed can blast Metallica and make jokes about turning up his Marshall to 11 while you knock back a Leinenkugels and help him change the oil in his van! But do these diminutive faux amps have the cojones to make the infamous snares on St. Anger fill the garage with crisp and clangy treble? Can their woofers be trusted to ensure that what little low-end was left in the masters of …And Justice For All is evetrn remotely audible?
In the case of the Orange Box, the aptly named entry from the legendary London-based amplifier brand Orange, the answer is a resounding yes. Clocking in at 50 watts and weighing a little over 6 pounds, this workhorse of a speaker packs a massive punch for its size. After spending a month running the Orange Box through its paces in a variety of scenarios where Bluetooth speakers are essential—kitchen prep, yard work, household repairs, bothering fellow hikers with Top 40 music at a National Park—we’ve sussed out the good, the bad, and the bothersome of this impressive little box.
Dial-a-Tone
Photograph: Orange
Stark minimalism has been all the rage since the mid-aughts, but the stripping-away of essential knobs, jacks, and buttons is a sore spot for the aging demographic that know the Orange brand better than most. Thankfully Orange’s mimicry of their beloved amplifiers yields tactile, user-friendly results in the Orange Box. With the exception of a rather standard pairing workflow, the rest of the controls on the device have a satisfying analog feel to them. Turning the volume knob up controls the actual output of the amp rather than that of the paired device. This works wonders when you’re across the room and want to control the unit remotely with a maximum volume ceiling that’s mitigated by the volume controls on your phone.
Dedicated bass and treble knobs felt like nice extras at first but became essentials after daily use. The former can add or subtract a warm thump from the low end—around the 100-Hz mark, based on our tests—while the latter can be used to either add or remove presence that hovers around 8 KHz: the sweet spot for most spoken word and singing. Having a hard time hearing a podcast in the shower? Crank the treble to 10. Guests straining to hear over your music at a dinner party? Cut the treble to create a lane for casual conversation.
One minor flaw of the Orange Box is the way it handles the crowded high end of radio-friendly pop music at high volumes. If modern producers cease to brick-wall their mixes and cram every last sonic crevasse with ear candy, then the Orange Box may eventually be up to the challenge, but until then the last era of radio hits that really shine on this speaker is the post-grunge explosion of the late ’90s. Then again, what zoomer is spending $300 on a Bluetooth speaker that looks like the amp their grandpa used to play proto-metal on during the Carter administration? Master of Puppets sounds absolutely killer on the Orange Box, and (almost) nothing else matters.
Party Time
Photograph: Orange
The Orange Box is sexy as-is, but the included leather strap doesn’t do much in making it easier to carry around town on its own. For an extra $60 you can buy a gig bag made of sturdy gray denier fabric, which results in a potent totable that looks and feels more like a soft-side cooler full of ‘Kuges than a portable amp. The bag fits snugly around the box, and a piece of cream-colored cloth covers the grill of the speaker without muffling any of the output. The top snaps in place tidily via a pair of magnets, and it peels back quickly to offer easy access to the control knobs. Side pockets keep small essentials like aux cables, beef jerky, and weed safe from the elements, but the power supply does not fit conveniently in any of the compartments.
Your Galaxy A52 is starting to show its age. Performance isn’t great anymore, there are no more Android OS upgrades waiting for you, and perhaps even the battery and screen protector are starting to show wear after all these years.
Needless to say, you’re thinking of upgrading your phone, and the natural reaction might be to buy the new Galaxy A55. But we’re here to tell you that’s not your only option, and you might want to do some outside-the-box thinking before you decide which Galaxy model should be your next.
The way we see it, you have not one but three worthwhile upgrade options if you want to replace your Galaxy A52 with a newer phone that has more or less the same price as the A52 did a few years ago. And there are benefits to picking either one.
Upgrading from the Galaxy A52 to the Galaxy A55
Your first option is the newer sequel, i.e., the Galaxy A55. We already talked about the reasons why the A55 is better than the A52 in virtually every way, but for a quick recap, it’s more powerful, has more RAM options, a better screen and connectivity options, a bigger battery, and an improved camera system.
However, keep in mind that Samsung didn’t reveal just the A55 earlier this week. It also revealed a cheaper model, and it can be your next phone and a worthwhile Galaxy A52 replacement.
Upgrading from the Galaxy A52 to the Galaxy A35
Samsung announced the Galaxy A35 alongside the A55, and believe it or not, the new A35 model is superior to your Galaxy A52, even if it is technically part of an inferior and cheaper lineup.
The age gap between the Galaxy A52 and A35 is big enough that the new A35 beats your A52 in many aspects.
What you get with the Galaxy A35 is a bigger, brighter 1,000 nits 6.6-inch screen with Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection, a more powerful Exynos 1380 chip that outperforms your Snapdragon 720G or 750G, and a bigger 5,000mAh battery.
You’re also getting better connectivity with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, and an improved camera system, if not through more megapixels but thanks to better processing and Super HDR video recording capabilities.
Finally, with the Galaxy A35, you’re getting a phone that runs Android 14, and you’ll benefit from four major OS upgrades and five years of security patches.
All this for a lower price than what you paid for the Galaxy A52 in 2021. The Galaxy A35 was launched for €379.
Upgrading from the Galaxy A52 to the S23 FE
If you’re willing to spend a bit extra when you upgrade from the Galaxy A52, you should look no further than the Galaxy S23 FE.
The Fan Edition phone doesn’t cost as much as the Galaxy S24 flagship, but it has a high-end (albeit older) chip and great features overall. It’s even supposed to get Galaxy AI features through a firmware update soon.
You’ll benefit from a brighter 1,450 nits screen, an Exynos 2200 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, 8GB of RAM, a competent camera system, better connectivity, wireless charging, and a modern design, just to name a few.
And if you are looking to trade your Galaxy A52 5G for the Galaxy S23 FE, you can get a discount of around $70 on the new phone.
In conclusion, whether you’re looking to spend less, about the same, or a little extra on your Galaxy A52 replacement, you can jump to the A55 or step outside the confines of the Galaxy A5x series and pick a different model. You’ll still get a better phone no matter what.
Either one of these three new models offer improved sound and speakers, Vision Booster technology, nightography and other camera improvements, and better firmware support.
