Apple backtracks on removal of iOS 17.4 Home Screen Web Apps

iOS 17.4

Apple’s iOS 17.4 software update is coming this week, it brings major changes to the App Store in Europe and now Apple has announced that it has changed its mind on removing Home Screen Web Apps in Europe.

Previously, Apple said that it would be disabling Home Screen web Apps in Europe for “security and privacy reasons’, it has now decided that it will not be removing these apps and their functionality with iOS 17.4, after considerable backlash from consumers, developers, and also the EU regulators. You can see what they have to say below.

Previously, Apple announced plans to remove the Home Screen web apps capability in the EU as part of our efforts to comply with the DMA. The need to remove the capability was informed by the complex security and privacy concerns associated with web apps to support alternative browser engines that would require building a new integration architecture that does not currently exist in iOS.

We have received requests to continue to offer support for Home Screen web apps in iOS, therefore we will continue to offer the existing Home Screen web apps capability in the EU. This support means Home Screen web apps continue to be built directly on WebKit and its security architecture, and align with the security and privacy model for native apps on iOS.

Developers and users who may have been impacted by the removal of Home Screen web apps in the beta release of iOS in the EU can expect the return of the existing functionality for Home Screen web apps with the availability of iOS 17.4 in early March.

This is good news as it means that the full functionality and features of Hoem Screen Web Apps will still be available in Europe when the in Europe when the iOS 17.4 software update is released this week. We are expecting the update either today or tomorrow, as soon as we get some more details, we will let you know.

If you’re on the hunt for quality entertainment without the price tag, you’re in luck. We’ve curated a list of the top 10 free streaming apps that promise to keep you engaged without dipping into your wallet.

  1. Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) shines as a beacon for those who revel in a vast array of movies and popular TV shows. It stands out for its well-produced original content that keeps viewers coming back for more. While it’s ad-supported and its interface might feel a tad outdated, the trade-off is a treasure trove of entertainment that’s hard to pass up, it is owned by Amazon and comes in the form of an App.
  2. The Roku Channel offers a compelling reason to invest in a Roku device, thanks to its free live TV channels and a robust library of on-demand content. With an increasing roster of Roku Originals, it’s carving out a niche for itself. Bear in mind, its full potential is unlocked with Roku hardware, and yes, it includes ads.
  3. Pluto TV mimics traditional TV with its impressive lineup of linear-style channels alongside a selection of on-demand movies and shows. It’s a fantastic option for those who miss channel surfing. However, pinpointing specific on-demand titles can be a bit of a scavenger hunt. Advertisements are part of the package here as well.
  4. Tubi is the hidden gem hunter’s dream, boasting an extensive collection of movies and TV shows. Its library is peppered with both mainstream hits and lesser-known titles, ensuring there’s always something new to discover. Ads support the service, and some content may not be the latest releases.
  5. Crackle delivers a nostalgic mix of classic and recent movies and TV shows, often surprising viewers with unexpected hits. While it’s ad-supported and its selection isn’t the largest, the quality of what’s available makes it a worthwhile stop for entertainment seekers.
  6. Sling Freestream offers a varied selection of live news, sports, and entertainment channels, complemented by some on-demand content. It’s a free offshoot of Sling’s paid subscriptions, bringing a taste of its premium offering to the table without any cost, aside from the presence of ads.
  7. Vudu is a movie lover’s paradise, featuring a vast catalog of popular films available for free viewing (with ads) or for purchase/rent. While it’s more movie-centric, offering fewer TV show options, its selection is regularly updated with fresh content.
  8. Xumo focuses on live news and sports, providing a good mix of channels for those interested in staying updated or catching the latest game. It’s ad-supported and might lean less towards movies and popular shows, but its live content is a strong draw.
  9. Peacock, the home of NBC’s beloved shows, presents a decent mix of movies and series. It operates on a freemium model, where its best shows are reserved for the paid tier, but the free content is still abundant and engaging.
  10. Kanopy sets itself apart by catering to fans of documentaries, foreign films, and educational content. Access requires a library card, making it a unique partnership with libraries across the country. It’s a treasure trove for the intellectually curious.

Availability and Content to Note:

It’s important to remember that the availability of these free streaming services can vary by region. Additionally, being predominantly ad-supported means you’ll encounter commercial breaks. Content libraries are also in constant flux, so your favorite show today might not be available tomorrow.

By exploring these free streaming apps, you unlock a world of entertainment without the financial commitment. Each platform has its unique strengths and potential drawbacks, but together, they offer an impressive range of choices for every type of viewer. Whether you’re a movie buff, a TV series aficionado, or someone who loves stumbling upon hidden gems, there’s something for everyone in 2024’s lineup of free streaming services.

How to Recover Deleted Apps on Your iPhone

recover deleted iPhone apps

I am always downloading lots of apps on my iPhone and then deleting them, this guide is designed to show you how to recover deleted apps on the iPhone. Sometimes you may delete apps only to realize you needed that app for something. We’ve all been there. You’re cleaning up your iPhone, a finger slips, and suddenly an app you rely on is gone. Fear not! Recovering deleted apps on your iPhone is often surprisingly simple. This guide will walk you through the steps that I have used to get my missing apps back and offer strategies to keep them safe in the future.

When you “delete” an app from your iPhone, several things might have happened:

  • Removed from Home Screen: The app may simply be removed from your Home Screen but still exists in your App Library.
  • Offloaded: iOS may automatically “offload” infrequently used apps. This removes the app’s core files but keeps your user data.
  • Completely Deleted: The app and all associated data are permanently erased from your device.

Methods to Recover Deleted iPhone Apps

Let’s dive into the different ways to get your apps back:

1. Searching the App Library

  • If you only removed the app from your Home Screen:
    1. Swipe all the way to the right on your iPhone’s Home Screen until you reach the App Library.
    2. Use the search bar at the top to find the app.
    3. If found, long-press the app’s icon and select “Add to Home Screen”.

2. Re-downloading from the App Store

  • Best for any type of app deletion.
    1. Open the App Store on your iPhone.
    2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
    3. Select Purchased.
    4. Switch to the Not on This iPhone tab.
    5. Browse the list or use the search bar to find the deleted app.
    6. Tap the cloud icon next to the app to re-download it.

3. Restoring from iCloud or iTunes/Finder Backup

  • Use this for complete device restoration, but note that it will replace your current data.
    • iCloud Backup:
      1. Go to Settings -> General -> Transfer or Reset iPhone.
      2. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
      3. During setup, choose Restore from iCloud Backup and select the backup that likely contains the deleted app.
    • iTunes/Finder Backup:
      1. Connect your iPhone to your computer.
      2. Open iTunes (older macOS) or Finder (newer macOS).
      3. Locate your iPhone and select Restore Backup.
      4. Choose the appropriate backup.

Bonus: Reinstalling Built-in Apple Apps

  • Some default Apple apps can be deleted. Here’s how to get them back:
    1. Open the App Store.
    2. Search for the app (e.g., Calculator, Weather, Notes).
    3. Tap the download icon to reinstall.

Additional Considerations

  • Check your subscriptions: For subscription-based apps you’ve deleted, you may need to resubscribe to regain full access, even if you reinstall the app.
  • Offloaded Apps: You’ll see a cloud icon next to offloaded apps in your App Library. Tap the cloud icon to re-download them.
  • Data Recovery for Completely Deleted Apps: If an app was completely deleted and you don’t have a backup, it can be hard to recover any associated data. You may be able to find specialized third-party data recovery software, but the success rate is not guaranteed.

Tips to Prevent Future Accidental App Deletions

  • Familiarize yourself with the App Library: Understand that removing an app from the Home Screen doesn’t mean it’s deleted.
  • Disable Offloading: Go to Settings -> App Store and toggle off Offload Unused Apps if you prefer to keep everything installed.
  • Review before deleting: Take a moment to confirm before hitting that “Delete App” button.
  • Utilize Backups: Regularly back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer to have recovery options.

Final Note

Applications on your iPhone are not always permanently gone once they’ve been removed; in fact, they can often be restored with relative ease. By familiarizing yourself with the various methods available for retrieving deleted apps, you gain a powerful tool in managing your digital environment. Understanding the nuances of how app deletion functions on your device—whether an app has been removed from the Home Screen, offloaded to save space, or completely erased along with its data—provides you with the knowledge to navigate these scenarios confidently. This comprehensive insight empowers you to effectively recover apps that you may have accidentally deleted, or perhaps removed in haste and later realized their necessity or value. The ability to reverse such actions and restore applications as needed not only enhances your user experience but also ensures that your digital workspace can adapt to your evolving needs and preferences.

How to Delete Pre-Installed Android Apps from Your Smartphone

Android Apps

Android smartphones frequently arrive equipped with an assortment of built-in Android apps, widely referred to as bloatware. This term encompasses a variety of software that, while intended to offer additional features and functionality out of the box, can inadvertently consume precious storage space on your device, deplete the battery at a faster rate, and in certain instances, operate in the background unbeknownst to the user. Although it’s not always possible to entirely eliminate every pre-installed application due to restrictions placed by the manufacturer or carrier, there are several strategies available to streamline your device’s app ecosystem.

These methods can help you to disable or hide the applications that you find unnecessary or seldom use, thereby reclaiming some of that valuable storage space and potentially improving your device’s overall performance and battery life.

Understanding Pre-installed Apps

Before we dive into the deletion process, let’s clarify the different kinds of pre-installed apps:

  • System Apps: These apps are integral to the core functionality of your Android operating system. They include apps like your phone dialer, settings, and messaging.
  • Completely removing these is generally not advisable as it can disrupt your phone’s operation.
  • Carrier/Manufacturer Apps: Phone carriers and manufacturers often add their own suite of apps.
  • These might include news apps, carrier-specific utilities, or branded entertainment services.

Methods for Dealing with Pre-Installed Apps

Here are the main ways to handle those pesky pre-installed apps:

1. Uninstalling

Through Settings:

    1. Go to your phone’s Settings app.
    2. Tap on Apps & notifications (or a similar option like Apps).
    3. Locate the app you want to remove.
    4. Tap on Uninstall. If this option is greyed out, the app is likely a system app and can’t be fully uninstalled. Proceed to the ‘Disabling’ method below.

Via Google Play Store:

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right corner.
  3. Go to Manage apps & device.
  4. Select the Manage tab.
  5. Find the app you wish to remove.
  6. Tap Uninstall.

2. Disabling

If an app cannot be uninstalled, disabling is often the best option:

  1. Follow the same steps as for “Uninstalling Through Settings.”
  2. Instead of “Uninstall,” you should see a Disable button.
  3. Tap Disable and confirm the action.

Disabling an app stops it from running in the background, prevents it from using data, and hides it from your app drawer.

3. Advanced Removal (Rooting Required)

Important: Rooting your Android phone involves modifying core system files and usually voids the warranty.

Proceed with caution and only if you’re comfortable with the potential risks.

Rooting grants you greater control over your device, including the ability to permanently remove system apps. However, it’s crucial to research thoroughly and ensure you understand the process before attempting this.

Additional Tips

  • Hidden Bloatware: Some manufacturers make it less obvious what is pre-installed.
  • Always check your full app list carefully.
  • App Updates: Uninstalling may only revert a pre-installed app to its original factory version. To prevent it from updating again, you may need to disable automatic updates in the Google Play Store settings.

A Cleaner and Faster Android Experience

By meticulously examining and selectively removing or disabling those pre-installed applications that are not essential to your daily use, you can reclaim significant amounts of storage space that were previously occupied. This process not only frees up space on your Android device but could also lead to a noticeable enhancement in your phone’s performance. Applications running in the background can slow down your device and affect its efficiency; by eliminating or disabling these, you reduce the number of active processes, which can help your phone operate more smoothly. Additionally, streamlining the number of applications on your device contributes to a more organized and less cluttered Android experience, allowing you to focus on the apps that truly matter to you. This deliberate approach to managing pre-installed software ensures that your device remains optimized for your specific needs and preferences, resulting in a more personalized and efficient user experience.
