Delta Game Emulator Now Available From App Store on iPhone

A few weeks after Apple updated its App Review Guidelines to allow retro game console emulator apps, the popular Nintendo emulator Delta is now available in the App Store. Delta can emulate games released for many older Nintendo consoles, including the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, and all Game Boy models.

12.9-Inch iPad Air Now Rumored to Feature Mini-LED Display

The rumored 12.9-inch iPad Air that is expected to be announced in May will be equipped with a mini-LED display like the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro, according to info shared this week by Ross Young, CEO of research firm Display Supply Chain Consultants.

The existing 10.9-inch iPad Air is equipped with a standard LCD panel, and the move to mini-LED technology for the 12.9-inch model would provide increased brightness for HDR content, deeper blacks, and more.

M4 Macs Are Expected to Launch in This Order Starting Later This Year

In his Power On newsletter this week, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman outlined the order in which he expects Macs with the M4 family of chips to be released.

Gurman said the entire Mac lineup will be updated with the M4 chip or higher-end variants, starting with the MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini between late 2024 and early 2025, followed by the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro between the spring and end of 2025.

Apple will debut a major revamp of the Calculator app in macOS 15 later this year, according to AppleInsider.

The overhauled version of the Calculator app for Mac will reportedly feature:

An enhanced unit conversion system located in the main user interface, including for currency conversion with up-to-date exchange rates.
“Math Notes” to allow the Notes app to communicate with the Calculator app in mathematical notation, also coming to iOS 18.
A history tape in the sidebar to show previous calculations, likely accessible via a dedicated button on the top left, which also provides options to toggle between all three calculator views: Basic, scientific, and programmer.
Adjustable window size across all three calculator views, with buttons that enlarge and change shape as needed.

The redesigned app will apparently offer a new design inspired by its iPhone counterpart in iOS 18, featuring rounded buttons. ‌macOS 15‌ is almost certain to be previewed alongside ‌iOS 18‌ and Apple’s other major software updates at WWDC on June 10, followed by official release in the fall.

Apple on late Thursday into Friday removed the popular messaging and social media apps WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Threads from its App Store in China at the request of the Chinese government, the The Wall Street Journal reported.

In a statement shared with several media outlets, Apple said China’s national internet regulator ordered the removal of the apps from the App Store in the country due to unspecified “national security concerns.” Apple said it is “obligated to follow the laws in the countries where we operate, even when we disagree.”

Apple has complied with similar App Store removal orders from the Chinese government in the past for apps related to VPNs, news, and more.

The lead developer of the multi-emulator app Provenance has told iMore that his team is working towards releasing the app on the App Store, but he did not provide a timeframe. Provenance is a frontend for many existing emulators, and it would allow iPhone and Apple TV users to emulate games released for a wide variety of classic game consoles, including the original PlayStation, GameCube, Wii, SEGA Genesis, Atari 2600, and others.

Apple has so far approved emulators on the App Store for older Nintendo consoles and the Commodore 64. For example, Riley Testut’s popular Delta emulator is now in the App Store in many countries, and it can emulate games released for the Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Nintendo 64, and Nintendo DS. Provenance would bring the first Sony, SEGA, and Atari emulators to the App Store if approved.

Provenance has been in development since 2016, and it can already be sideloaded on the iPhone and the Apple TV outside of the App Store.

Apple updated its App Review Guidelines earlier this month to allow “retro game console emulator apps” on the App Store for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other devices. Earlier this week, Apple told us that emulators that can load games (ROMs) are permitted on the App Store, so long as the apps are emulating “retro console games” only. It is unclear if Apple will consider consoles like the GameCube and Wii to be “retro.”

While a U.S. court ruled that emulators are legal, downloading copyrighted ROMs is typically against the law in the country. On its customer support website for the U.S., Nintendo says that downloading pirated copies of its games is illegal. A wide collection of public-domain “homebrew” games are available to play legally.

Following a request from the Chinese government, Apple has reportedly pulled WhatsApp and Threads from China’s App Store. Other Meta apps, like Facebook and Instagram, are still available for download in the country.

The Cyberspace Administration of China asked Apple to take down the two Meta apps, citing national security concerns.

New Chinese government regulations possibly behind WhatsApp’s removal

It is not immediately clear what national security issues led the Chinese government to ask Apple to delist the Meta apps. iPhone users with WhatsApp and Threads installed can continue using it without issues. However, new users cannot download it from the App Store now.

In an emailed statement to the Wall Street Journal, Apple confirmed the removal of the two Meta apps. Its spokesperson said, “The Cyberspace Administration of China ordered the removal of these apps from the China storefront based on their national security concerns.”

The removal comes as Chinese regulators start clamping down on apps that have yet to register with the government based on a directive issued in August 2023. It aims to reduce scams and fraud, with the registration deadline of March 2024. As part of the regulation, app developers must have a mechanism to handle “illegal information.”

Telegram and Signal also removed from China’s App Store

WhatsApp is not the only popular messaging app that is unavailable for download on the iPhone in China. Telegram and Signal have also been removed from the App Store.

This is not the first time Apple has removed popular apps from the Chinese App Store at the government’s request. In 2020, Apple booted over 94000 games from China’s App Store following a new government regulation. Before that, it had removed apps like Quartz and Tripadvisor for violating the App Store or the Chinese government guidelines.

Best Buy today announced the launch of a new “Envision” app designed for the Apple Vision Pro headset. Envision is designed to allow Best Buy customers to explore different products and see how those products look in their own living spaces.

According to Best Buy, the Envision app is meant to help consumers plan their “ultimate home technology setup.” 3D models of Best Buy products are included, so users can see them from all angles and get an idea of the space they take up. The app includes big screen TVs, large and small appliances, computers, furniture, fitness equipment, and more.

There are hundreds of items to scroll through and preview, along with access to product ratings and pricing. Listings can be opened up in Safari on the Vision Pro to make purchases on the Best Buy website.

The Best Buy Envision app is available for free from the Vision Pro App Store.

If you were among the Windows Server 2022 users who recently spotted a new Microsoft Copilot app added to the list of installed programs, don’t fret – it’s not an actual app, and it doesn’t work.

It’s just a mistake on Microsoft’s part, a tail left behind the tests Microsoft ran for Windows Server 2025, recently.

As reported by BleepingComputer, Microsoft acknowledged the error earlier this week, and added that it affected systems running Windows 10 22H2 and Windows 11 21H2, or newer.

Shouldn’t be visible

“Updates to Edge browser version 123.0.2420.65, released on March 28, 2024 and later, might incorrectly install a new package (MSIX) called ‘Microsoft chat provider for Copilot in Windows’ on Windows devices. Resulting from this, the Microsoft Copilot app might appear in the Installed apps in Settings menu,” the company said in a statement.

So, it was an update for the Edge browser that triggered the error – and furthermore, Microsoft says the “app” doesn’t collect data, or exfiltrate it to company servers.

“It is important to note that the Microsoft chat provider for Copilot in Windows does not execute any code or process, and does not acquire, analyze, or transmit device or environment data in any capacity,” Microsoft added.

The package will make it to the OS eventually, BleepingComputer added, but so far, it shouldn’t be visible on all Windows devices.

“As part of the upcoming resolution of this issue, the chat provider for Copilot in Windows component will be removed from devices where Microsoft Copilot is not intended to be enabled or installed. This includes most Windows Server devices,” Microsoft said. “We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release of Microsoft Edge.”

The company started testing Microsoft Copilot in WIndows Server 2025 preview builds earlier this year, but removed it after a backlash from the community.

Since Google and Samsung merged Wear OS and Tizen, Google has been rapidly improving Wear OS by adding new and useful features to it, such as introducing new applications for the platform, including Google Calendar and Gmail, improving existing apps, including Google Home and Google Maps, introducing new Tiles, and offering new watch face and health data systems to offer a better user experience. Well, the company is now working on offering another improvement to Wear OS that could come to Galaxy Watches.

According to the Google News channel on Telegram, version 2.3.0 on the Google Pixel Watch app for Android contains an option called ‘Sync permission from phone’ which will “Give your watch the same app permissions that you’ve allowed” on your smartphone. In other words, once you enable the option, the app will sync permissions between your Android smartphone and the Pixel Watch for the common apps on the two devices.

For example, if you give Google Maps on your Android smartphone permission to access your location, with the new option enabled, the Google Pixel Watch app will extend the same permission to Google Maps on your Pixel Watch, saving you from the hassle of giving permissions to the app on your smartphone as well as the smartwatch. The option is located inside the ‘Device details’ menu which is currently hidden behind a flag.

At the moment, there’s no information about when Google will make the new option available to the public or if it will offer this feature to other Wear OS smartwatches, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Watch lineup. We hope that the company extends the new feature to other Wear OS smartwatches as it would offer people more convenience and a better user experience. With over seven million apps available across iOS and Android platforms, even SMEs that want to compete to grow their user base and boost revenue must deliver unique, engaging, and easy-to-use mobile applications.

The impact of poor mobile application quality on SMEs can be felt right down to the bottom line. In fact, 96% of global SMEs estimate losses of up to $2.49m as a result of poor mobile application quality. Users are facing challenges with device or platform support, lack of native applications and buggy or slow experiences. These are problems that SME business leaders are cognizant of, as they recognize the value of a well designed mobile application for building brand value, delivering an enhanced user experience, increasing competitiveness, and driving customer retention, acquisition and sales alike.

That explains why senior IT professionals and application developers at SMEs are increasingly categorizing mobile application quality as critical to their business, and recognizing the importance of testing the quality and success of their organization’s mobile app development.

The delivery of quality software, fast, has become a necessary prerequisite for winning and retaining customers and, ultimately, to achieving digital success. But the surge in demand has also exposed challenges in the mobile application development and testing landscape. This has prompted serious decisions amongst SMEs about how to reduce the impact of poor application quality.

Defining and delivering on quality

Ultimately, the customer is at the center of mobile application development.

Security, high-performance, good user experience and accessibility all rank highly as the key markers of success amongst SMEs. The challenge however is that mobile application users don’t differentiate between businesses of different sizes (and budgets) when it comes to user experience – they want an app that is fast and easy-to-use, regardless of the size and scale of the organization behind it. Delivering a quality user experience is not just about developing apps that work, but creating an end-to-end experience that helps users to operate mobile applications intuitively.

However, SMEs are suffering from a significant lack of resources to effectively support mobile development and testing to ensure this level of quality. We’re hearing from more and more IT leaders at companies of this size who recognize that there’s significant room for improvement in their mobile application development and testing strategies, but say they simply aren’t able to find the numbers and quality of personnel required to achieve better results.

Competing priorities and cost also present challenges for SME mobile app development and testing, compounding issues of complexity and lack of resources. And yet many still use manual testing for mobile applications – a slow and laborious process.

Adopting automation and AI to overcome challenges

Automation, underpinned by AI and low-code/no-code tools, presents a solution to these challenges. A YouGov survey from 2023 – commissioned by The Times and Lloyds Bank – revealed that 10% of SMEs had already used AI to grow their businesses by improving processes and systems, whilst 16% said that introducing automation had improved their productivity. So there is strong indication that SMEs can find significant productivity and efficiency gains by onboarding these technologies – our own research shows that as much as 75 hours per month could be saved.

Beyond productivity, user experience ranks highly as a key use case for the adoption of automation and AI in mobile app development and testing. Automated testing enables teams to more quickly identify opportunities to streamline app delivery while maintaining quality and performance, getting better apps to market quicker. Meanwhile, AI can answer developers’ questions far quicker, reducing the amount of tedious work required to find information manually. This leaves them free to focus on improving the end user experience, and fix any bugs found during testing.

Despite these anticipated benefits, the number of those already reaping these rewards remains low. However, with more education about when and how to use them best AI tools will play a significant role in reducing the financial losses being incurred by SMEs as a result of poor mobile application quality.

Mobile testing crossroads

Clearly SMEs cannot afford to keep losing money because of poor mobile app performance. The time is now for long-term strategizing and investment in technologies that will positively impact both user experience and revenue opportunity – as well as helping to overcome skills and productivity gaps.

Mobile application quality has never been more important, and the mobile app development industry is at a crucial juncture, with AI and automation presenting a unique opportunity to those who take advantage. It’s clear from our research that all SME stakeholders — from the C-suite to the developers themselves — are focused on improving their mobile application quality and testing processes, with much to gain.

Game emulator apps have come and gone since Apple announced App Store support for them on April 5, but now popular game emulator Delta from developer Riley Testut is available for download.

Testut is known as the developer behind GBA4iOS, an open-source emulator that was available for a brief time more than a decade ago. GBA4iOS led to Delta, an emulator that has been available outside of the App Store, but is now sanctioned by Apple.

Delta is an all-in-one emulator that supports game systems including NES, SNES, N64, Nintendo DS, Game Boy, and Game Boy Advance. It works with popular game controllers, and supports cheats, save states, backups, syncing, and more. As this is Testut’s longtime project, it is more polished and feature rich than other emulators that have popped up.

Other features include custom controller skins, an option to fast forward, a “hold” button for games where a button needs to be consistently held, support for Haptic Touch, and appropriate box art for imported games. Local multiplayer gaming is available, and up to four players can participate.

Earlier this week, Apple approved iGBA, a direct copy of Testut’s original GBA4iOS app. iGBA made it to the top of the ‌App Store‌ charges, but Apple pulled it after learning that it was a knockoff.

Delta can be downloaded from the ‌App Store‌ for free, and it does not collect information or include ads. The app is available in the United States and other countries, but it is not available in the European Union where it is instead being offered through an alternative app marketplace. [Direct Link]
