AMC Entertainment has revamped its board of directors, announcing the appointment of two new directors and one outgoing director.
Former Sundance Institute director and executive producer Kerry Patman, a supporter of independent film, and Dee Clark, who has worked in information technology at Hasbro, Mattel, Warner Music and Apple, will join as directors effective January 1. for one year, qualifying again in 2023. A blues singer from New Orleans struggles to hide a worsening eating disorder.
Ivy (Kelly Murtagh) is a beautiful woman living in New Orleans. He dreams of becoming a professional blues singer, plays regularly with his band and shares remarkable chemistry with bandmate Oscar (Bobby Gilchrist). Ivy works hard to look like she has it all figured out, but harbors a terrible secret shame. Ivy has an eating disorder and the wheels start to go off.
Samantha Aldana's directorial debut, Shapeless , is a bleak look at a person dealing with a serious problem. When she's not cleaning or making music, Ivy is mostly alone in her apartment trying not to drink, and when she can't, she's always kneeling in front of the toilet.
In her creative life with her band, Ivy seems to be about to break through, but in her personal life, the walls are closing in and there could be a chance for music, creativity and fulfillment of her dreams, her life. is increasingly characterized by deprivation, failure and shame.
If all of this is depressing enough, it is. Although the film is ostensibly a horror film, Shapeless works best as a dark depiction of life with bulimia. The film has scene after scene of Ivy trying (and failing) to deal with her eating disorder, and Ivy's bulimia seems to follow a pattern of addiction rather than trying to meet realistic beauty standards.
Living as an addict is real work, and Shapeless captures the callousness of Ivy's everyday life very well. Unfortunately, following these events to completion can be difficult.
Some of the problems with Shapeless are probably unrealistic expectations. Aldano tries to weave a body-horror motif into Ivy's cycle of madness and purification, but while the effects are very well done, they never seem particularly revealing, and I never understood what the extra appendages that Ivy attached to her body gifts are, must represent .
There's a scene in Shapeless where Ivy tries to hide the evidence of her cleaning by scooping up a handful of vomit from the toilet, and it's a more gruesome sight than the gruesome genre elements on display. Formless could have been a more effective horror film if it had focused more on the disturbing aspects of life with bulimia, but Aldana's camera often avoids the grim reality of the disease.
If Shapeless doesn't succeed as a horror film, it certainly makes for an impressive calling card for this first-time director. The setting of the New Orleans blues scene is a welcome addition, and Aldano does a good job of maintaining the film's unique (and dark) tone and atmosphere.
Kelly Murtagh also stars in almost every frame in this film, giving a masterful performance as a woman in crisis as Ivy's story takes an increasingly sinister path.
Shapeless is not an effective horror film, but it is an insightful story about a problem that is too easy to hide. A particularly sad blues song, Shapeless can break your heart.
After accounting for all unpaid costs, Denver officials estimate the total bill for housing the thousands of immigrants arriving in the city from the southern border in December will be $3 million.
The pace at which refugees have continued to arrive — 166 more arrived between Thursday night and Friday, according to the city's latest update, bringing the total since Dec. 9 to nearly 3,000 — there is little reason to believe these costs will slow down. Significantly in the new year.

The influx of migrants this month has coincided with several dangerous winter storms, further straining the city's housing system. That includes a blast of arctic air that forced the city to open an emergency shelter at the Denver Coliseum four days before Christmas. The event was paid for by the American Red Cross, according to the city's finance department. But this is not an immigration crisis.
The city said the estimated $3 million cost would cover a wide variety of categories, including staffing, transportation, Denver Metro bus tickets and meals.
So far, the city has provided jobs for more than 100 people working in its shelters, Ortega said. More than half of them agreed. They are called temporary.
This number grows. The city is looking for more professionals to help homeless refugees decide their next steps here.
"We want to help these people directly understand plan B … and how we can help them integrate into the country for the long term," Ortega said.
The city initially spent money from the general fund on emergency shelters. That's a plan for the future, but the city is hoping for federal and state help after Mayor Michael Hancock declared a migration emergency earlier this month.
The state Department of Environmental Affairs has already agreed to reimburse Denver $1.5 million, but the grant must go through the City Council process before approval, officials said. Ortega said $2.5 million in federal funding for the American Rescue Plan Act has been set aside to support refugee services, but the money will be distributed regionally instead of going entirely to Denver.
The city is working as quickly as possible to find nonprofit partners or other government agencies that can host short- and long-term refugees, Ortega said. Housing 1,400 to 1,500 people per day, combined with city and partner facilities, is considered sustainable. Mayor Hancock, at a press conference last week, described Denver's support network as fringes.
"We are looking at all options to make sure there is no humanitarian crisis on the streets of Denver," Ortega said.
The American Friends Service Committee is one of the city's partners in meeting the needs of immigrants. This fall, the agency transported 50 refugees from El Paso, Texas, assisted 21 in the Denver metro area and others elsewhere. As program director Jennifer Piper prepares to welcome 50 more this month, she says she's refocused her efforts on serving the people who come here.
Piper said the organization will fill 150 volunteer positions and hire 19 volunteers to provide transportation to support refugees admitted this month. On Friday he received messages from four people who wanted to donate the wealth collected by their families.
Piper predicted that a strong commitment to volunteerism and assistance will be needed in the future. Climate change, conflict and economic inequality are driving mass migration around the world, and Denver seems to be missing out.
"I think Denver is on the map and we're going to welcome people and we want everyone to be a welcome part of (this) community in a way that respects people's human dignity and empowers the underdog. Word Colorado," he said .

Top Gun: Maverick grossed the most both domestically and internationally, becoming not only the highest-grossing film of 2022, but also the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise's career.
Credit also has to go to James Cameron's Avatar: The Last Airbender for making $1.1 billion worldwide after hitting theaters just two weeks after its mid-December release. Avatar: The Last Airbender was also the fourth film released after the COVID-19 pandemic to gross over $1 billion, the others being Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World period.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) appears to be a very reliable source of revenue, with three films ranking in the top ten national and worldwide grosses. The MCU is currently expected to release three films in 2023: Ant-Man and Ace: Quantum of Solace, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and The Incredibles.
All top 10 films, both domestic and global, are based on pre-existing intellectual property (IP). Additionally, eight of the top ten films at the box office in the country are direct sequels to previous films.
Black Adam managed to gross $1.67 million domestically despite negative reviews from critics. It's been a tumultuous year for the DC Universe, and no one knows what will happen. James Gunn and Peter Saffron have been appointed as directors of DC Studios following the merger from Warner Bros. and Discovery, and they seem to clean up the director's and creator's previous work; their most notable move so far was confirmation that Henry Cavill was exiting as Superman, as DC's new management hoped to take the character in a new direction.
It seems that the current trend for movies is to adapt a movie title by writing the title followed by a colon followed by a fancy sentence.
What will happen in 2023?
As mentioned above, the MCU is expected to release three films in 2023.
Horror film company Blumhouse Productions is making a film called M3GAN (pronounced "Megan"), in which Allison Williams plays a robotic expert who uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN (short for Model 3 Generative Android), a lifelike doll, to become the best child to be. . parents best friend and ally. Gerary will take the director's chair. 15 years after the disappointing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it's hard to say whether this film will be as good as fans hope. However, the new Indiana Jones film with Harrison Ford is sure to keep moviegoers dreaming.
Director Christopher Nolan returns to the big screen with Oppenheimer. Not much is known about the film except that it involves a nuclear bomb and an ensemble cast. Catch it in theaters on July 21.
What did Oppenheimer put on screen on July 21? Of course none other than Barbie! Very little storyline has been released at this point regarding the Greta Gerwig film arc, but if you need more reasons to check out this film, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling star as Barbie and Ken.

The Federal Election Commission has fined Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach and the private border wall company he was once linked to $30,000 for campaign finance violations during his failed 2020 Senate bid.
In a settlement approved by the Federal Election Commission last month, about a week after Kobach was elected, he admitted to illegally accepting a similar contribution from We Build the Wall, a Steve Bannon-related group that "led a fundraising campaign for .construction of "private" border wall, but caught in accusations of fraud.
CNN has reached out to lawyers for Kobach and We Build the Wall for comment.
In 2019, Kobach's campaign hired a We Build the Wall mailing list of 295,000 people for just $2,000, far less than the usual price.
The campaign was also accused of additional campaign finance violations related to We Build the Wall, but the FEC, composed of three Democrats and three Republicans, dismissed or evenly split those charges.
Kobach is an immigration hardliner and longtime claimant of false electoral claims who served as Kansas Secretary of State from 2011 to 2019 and has close ties to former President Donald Trump.
Kobach was elected Kansas attorney general in November, defeating Democrat Chris Mann 51% to 49%. His victory comes after two consecutive losses in the most recent election cycle: he lost the gubernatorial race in 2018 and the Republican nomination for the US Senate in 2020.
Previously, he served on We Build the Wall's board of directors and was the organization's general counsel.
Two men pleaded guilty in federal court and another was convicted of donor fraud with We Build the Wall. Bannon and the company now face charges in New York state. Bannon, who pleaded not guilty to state charges, was previously indicted in federal court but pardoned by then-President Trump at the end of his term.

NICOLE JONES: Thanks operator. In today’s conversation with Axeve, John Bencic, CEO; and chief accountant Jerry Wang. After the prepared comments, Success Management will be available for questions and answers. I would like to remind everyone that today’s call contains forward-looking statements that are based on current expectations. John Bencic: Thank you, Nicole, and thank you to everyone who joined us today. Once again, the success quarter was a busy and exciting one. As we continue to push cytocycline through the clinic, we are poised to become the first new treatment for nicotine addiction in nearly two decades. In September, we announced the completion of targeted recruitment of participants for our Phase III ORCA-3 confirmation study on smoking cessation. And just last week, we announced that the Phase II trial of ORCA-V1 for nicotine e-cigarettes, or smoking cessation, completed better than expected. Of note, the ORCA-3 trial is the second and final phase III randomized trial that requires FDA submission and potential marketing authorization in the United States.
The design replicates the experience of the previous ORCA-2, which yielded excellent results earlier this year. Both trials were designed to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of cytocycline 3 mg. The trials share the same primary endpoint for smoking cessation in the past 4 weeks, which is the primary endpoint for FDA-approved smoking cessation medications. The ORCA-2 results, if confirmed, would further solidify our belief that cyclicine could become the new gold standard in the treatment of nicotine addiction. Given the unequivocal incidence of side effects, the side effect profile of cycline is better than that of currently available therapies.
In terms of effectiveness, the odds ratio we observed with ORCA-2 at the end of treatment was six to eight times higher than placebo. Moreover, despite the high participation of the research team and the effectiveness of the trials during the outbreak, our dropout rate was extraordinary. We look forward to seeing similar results from ORCA-3 and look forward to sharing them with you in the second quarter of 2023. Vaping remains an important topic worldwide, especially given the alarming number of teens using it and the new evidence of harmful effects Potential on the cardiovascular system and respiratory system. More than 2.5 million middle and high school students in the United States alone use e-cigarettes, according to data released by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) last week.
More than 11 million adults in the United States use nicotine, and there is currently no approved treatment for smoking cessation. We initiated the ORCA-V1 trial expecting the steady cycle to be of benefit to this growing and overexerted population. The rapid recruitment of ORCA-V1 supports our hypothesis of a therapeutic need in this population. The target recruitment of 150 ORCA-V1 subjects was completed within four months, with recruitment completed at only five clinical trial sites. By design, ORCA-V1 will evaluate a 12-week course of citiccycline versus placebo. As with other ORCA studies, all participants will receive behavioral support during the study. The primary objective will be to assess successful nicotine withdrawal, defined as weekly abstinence from sex over the past 4 weeks, with cotinine levels as a biochemical evidence of abstinence.
ORCA-V1 data is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2023. After two test cases, we will focus on three main issues in the coming months. First, ongoing communication with the ORCA-3 and ORCA-V1 clinical trial centers and third-party clinical research organization to ensure data is accurate and timely. Second, careful preparation for the US NDA implementation, including successful results from the ORCA-3 trials, and completion of the remaining additional trials required for the application. Third, commercial readiness, including initiating preparatory activities and discussing partnerships with stakeholders with the greatest potential for citcycline.
We also continue to work closely with our manufacturing partner Sofarma to ensure there is sufficient commercial potential at launch as part of our commercial readiness objective. As we announced today, Sopharma recently invested over €3 million to complete construction of a new cytocycline API purification facility and main production facility in Sofia. The new API package complements Sopharma’s annual production of nearly three billion tablets. Now I’d like to take Jerry’s call regarding our third quarter financial results.

Jerry Wang : Thank you, John. I will provide an update on our cash position as of September 30, 2022 and review our operating expenses for the third quarter. As of September 30, 2022, cash and cash equivalents, short-term investments, and restricted cash were $18.2 million compared to $43 million as at December 31, 2021. Our financial projections include a $2.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. Supporting the ORCA-V1 phase II study to evaluate the use of cetirizine as a nicotine stopping agent for e-cigarettes. Of note, about half of the ORCA-V1 trials are funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health. According to the income statement, net loss for the quarter ended September 30, 2022 increased to $13.1 million from $6.7 million for the same quarter of 2021.
For the nine months ended September 30, 2022, net loss increased to $31.1 million, compared to $26 million for the same period in 2021. Operating expenses increased in the third quarter due to the testing and operation of ORCA-3 and the achievement of planned acceptance. In our experience ORCA-V1. We expect our quarterly operating expenses to be higher in the fourth quarter of this year and then decrease in the first half of 2023 after the completion of the ORCA-3 and ORCA-V1 trials. This concludes my financial comment. I will now hand over to John.
John Bencic: Thank you, Jerry. 2022 is critical to success, with key milestones being the results of the Phase 3 trial and the completion of enrollments in two other major studies. We are excited to continue advancing our process and are committed to advancing this important new treatment. Cigarette and nicotine addiction directly affects more than 1 billion people worldwide. In the United States alone, more than 30 million people smoke cigarettes, and about 0.5 million people die from smoking-related diseases. According to the analysis, 80% of new smokers who want to quit smoking are interested in new smoking products.
We think it would be better for Cytocycline in the class, 93% of them want something new. Existing treatments are very troublesome for smokers and addicts alike, and new options are long overdue. Much more needs to be done to help people who want to quit smoking improve and extend their lives. At Cytocycline, we believe we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to make a real difference. Thanks again everyone for your continued support and for joining us today. (Bloomberg) — Broadcasting is changing the way Americans watch sports. Gary Bettman has a plan for how the National Hockey League, which he has led as commissioner for three decades, will be in a strong position to take advantage.

The league saw the value in digital sports rights in 2013 when it signed a 12-year deal with Rogers Communications Inc. In Canada, including mobile phone and satellite radio broadcasts. Then, in 2021, the NHL signed a seven-year deal with The Walt Disney Co., Ltd. Which will see some games air on ABC or ESPN, and many others exclusively on ESPN+ and Hulu.
"You'll see more development," Bateman, 70, said in an interview. "The flow will be more and more important, the national presence will be more important."
Live sports is one of the few reasons people still pay for cable TV, but the move to streaming services could hasten the demise and collapse of the major sports networks. The tech giants have struggled to keep up with customer demand since the National Football League announced earlier this month that it had licensed the rights to YouTube's coveted road game package from Alphabet Inc. Sports leagues can't totally go out of style, Bateman said, but "you have to be flexible enough to keep up with trends and be willing to embrace them."
"Most importantly, you have to give your fans easy access at an affordable price," he said. “But when you look at millennials and Gen Z, they want more than just games. They want behind the scenes.”
And that means more locker room shots and coverage of special events like the Boston Winter Classic on Jan. 2. The tournament also uses additional camera angles during the broadcast and more real-time data, including from the built-in sensor.

Hockey has an inherent advantage. It is indeed a more dynamic sport than others, so enthusiasts are unlikely to shy away from it for fear of missing out on an important moment. But additional content for The Batman ensures that fans will still be engaged when they return home.
"The slow pace makes young people use their phones and do other things," she said.
Bateman said there is "no news" that more young people are playing soccer than hockey. "This is not surprising given the barriers to entry," he said, "such as access to the ice rink and expensive equipment."
Despite his late entry, he rejected the notion that professional American football could overtake the NHL in popularity, jeopardizing its place among the so-called "Big Four", along with the NFL, NBA and MLB.
Our game is still in the Big Four and I think it will always be that way," he added that the NHL is comfortable playing 32 teams.
"We're not going to expand," Bateman said. “We receive expressions of interest that we always listen to very well. But I don't see anything in our near future.”
