Do You Need a Hub or a Docking Station?
USB hubs are small, portable devices you can plug directly into a port on your laptop to get extra USB ports, SD card readers, headphone jacks, and other extra connections. However, if you plan on regularly connecting your laptop to a full-blown workstation—with a keyboard, mouse, monitors, the whole shebang—then you might want to consider a docking station instead.
USB docking stations are larger, more expensive, and are designed to spend most of their time on your desk. They typically have a power supply to charge other devices and offer multiple monitor outputs, plus Ethernet connections. If you frequently use your laptop at a desk, we’ll have a new guide soon on the best docking stations, so stay tuned.
The Trust USB Headset is a good and honest, plain and simple, salt-of-the-earth wired headset. If you or your staff are joining a few video calls a day and need an inexpensive pair of headphones and mic, this pretty much fits the bill in every way.
You could call the wired USB headset basic. It is. That’s not a bad thing here. This is about making video calls as easy as possible. No switches and flashing lights, no pressing and holding buttons to perform a series of convoluted tasks. Just plug it into your computer – it’s compatible with Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS – and you’re done.
Driving this point home is the user guide. It may be our favorite one yet. Imagine the untold relief at the sheer simplicity opening this up. Plug in headset. Twist right cup for volume. Flip mic to mute and unmute. What more needs to be said?
For comparison, we generally use the Jabra Evolve 2 65 Flex. More or less flawless in design, sound quality, and our overall pick for best Bluetooth headset. But it’s a high-end headset that’s difficult to justify for those not spending all day on calls. The Adya headset from the long-standing Trust is its mirror image in almost every conceivable way. But don’t let that fool you.
Trust Adya: Pricing & availability
The Adya retails for around £20 – which makes it about right for budget wired headsets, which tend to hover around the fifteen to thirty mark.
A slightly expensive, sustainably designed model is available, which features noise-canceling mic and Type-C adapter. A better fit for those who do more talking, but it’s otherwise the same headset design.
You can buy the standard 3.5mm version from Amazon and Argos in the UK, and it’s widely available elsewhere in Europe, but not – as far as we could see – the US.
Trust Adya: Design & features

We found the Trust Adya is thoughtfully designed. The pleasing circle-within-circle of the cups mellows the stark, no-nonsense black. A flat, slender, rubbery microphone arm blooms into a shaped foam windscreen. The podgy foam pads are compact, minimizing the profile, with another padded strip along a band made of stiff, tight plastic. In the hand it feels substantial and relatively lightweight, clocking in at 165kg.
There are two essential features built into the Trust Adya USB headset: a volume dial on the right ear-cup and the ability to mute and unmute the mic by flipping the arm. In design, both are well-executed. The microphone arm softly slots into place with a satisfying click, letting you know it’s now muted. The dial confidently turns in place, not wildly spinning like some cheap piece of plastic, which gave us a feeling of real control over the volume. And aside from the discreet labeling, the function blends so seamlessly into the design, you wouldn’t know it was there.
Trust Adya: Performance

When it comes to budget headphones with mic, it can sometimes feel like a bit of a dice roll. Often, the sound is tinny, lacking in bass. The volume so low you’re straining to hear, and worried that even if you do know how to respond to that half-heard question, the microphone will make you sound like a robot and ruin the rest of the day.
If it is a dice roll, though, the Adya headset is coming up sixes. We experienced no issues with the overall performance of the unit. During our tests, both in meetings, and through our own sound recordings, we found both audio and mic quality to be deep, crisp, clear. The volume dial complementing the set-up, because, as anyone in a large video call with lots of speakers knows, not all microphones are equal.
And the mute function on the mic worked very well. For us, it’s always a concern that, without pressing the on-screen mute, any physical button or switch may not really work, catching that unguarded slurp of tea or the start of an urgent call. But we can say, with the mic arm snug in the mute position, there wasn’t a single complaint about The Boys Are Back in Town playing during our last video call (although, in fairness, who would complain about that anyway?).
However, this is a budget model, so there are some compromises here. Without the ENC noise-canceling microphone found on the higher-range model, background noise and chatter was noticeable in our test recordings. Not enough to disrupt or derail a meeting, but present nonetheless, making them better suited if you can make calls in a quiet space or you work from home.
While we really like the overall design and construction, you definitely know when you’re wearing this headset. They may be lightweight in hand, but after longer meetings, they do start to feel heavy, and the initial comfortable tightness becomes wearing. Admittedly, that may be a consequence of a relatively new headset that hasn’t had time to somewhat slacken – and we prefer this over flimsy, creaking plastic headsets that threaten to break if you breathe too hard.
Trust Adya: Final verdict

The Trust Adya USB PC headset is a really good choice if you want something with absolutely minimal fuss. If you’re making casual video calls, either for home, work or school, it does a fine job, with a pleasing audio quality and a crackle-free microphone.
We like the addition of the volume dial and mute function built into the headset. Performance is here smooth, uncomplicated, the required actions discreet even when you can’t see what you’re doing. We did find the mic picks up background chatter, which the more advanced model mitigates with its noise-canceling mic. For busy offices where that matters, this is a must. While comfortable, we also found the on-ear cups can get wearing after longer meetings, making them a better option for those not sitting in all-day meetings.
Overall, we were confident using this for any standard day-to-day meetings, whether as a viewer or speaker. This is a solidly designed wired headset for PC, Mac, and Chromebooks that doesn’t feel like a budget choice, working exactly as intended and expected.
Samsung has never been a proponent of extremely fast smartphone charging speeds. The fastest charging speed on its phones and tablets is 45W, and even that speed is only used until the device reaches 50% battery. Samsung now has a charger that offers up to 50W charging speed.

The company has launched the 50W Super Fast Charging Adapter (model number EP-T5020) in some European countries. It is priced at €69.90, as spotted by Roland Quandt. It has two fast-charging USB Type-C ports. The top port can offer up to 50W fast charging speed when only one device is charged.
Both USB Type-C ports can offer up to 25W charging speeds when two devices are connected to the charger simultaneously. So, you can charge to Galaxy smartphones at 25W. You can get up to 50W charging speed when using a Galaxy Book laptop. This charger supports the USD PD PPS protocol.
This new dual-port USB Type-C charger from Samsung hasn’t been launched in many other countries, and we hope it comes to other countries soon. Samsung sells an even more powerful charger, the 65W triple-port EP-T6530, but it is aimed at Galaxy Book laptops.

Mac users should install macOS Sonoma 14.4.1, a patch to remove a bug with USB hubs that made headlines. The update released Monday also takes care of a couple of other problems, too.
Currently, it’s the only OS update coming out of Cupertino on Monday, meaning Apple Watch and tvOS users are still waiting.
This update provides bug fixes for your Mac, including:
USB hubs connected to external displays may not be recognized
Copy protected Audio Unit plug-ins designed for professional music apps may not open or pass validation
Apps that include Java may quit unexpectedly
The notes make it clear there are no new features in Monday’s release. Still, no Mac user wants bugs.
How to update your Mac to the latest
To download the macOS Sonoma update, go to Apple menu > About This Mac. Then click Software Update. Alternatively, you can install the new version from the App Store. (Note: At the time of this writing, Apple had not yet updated the version of macOS in the App Store. But it should happen soon.)
iPhone and iPad not overlooked
While Apple typically updates the operating systems on all its devices simultaneously, that’s not what is happened this time. Late last week, Cupertino introduced iOS 17.4.1 and iPadOS 17.4.1 for iPhone and iPad users, but made Mac users wait until today for a similar patch.
And speaking of waiting, Apple Watch is still on watchOS 10.4 and Apple TV remains on tvOS 17.4. It’s possible they’ll get their own patches soon.
Plus, Apple has yet to seed macOS 14.5, iOS 17.5, etc. to beta testers.
Apple today released macOS Sonoma 14.4.1, a minor update for the macOS Sonoma operating system that launched last September. macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 comes three weeks after macOS Sonoma 14.4.
The macOS Sonoma 14.4 update can be downloaded for free on all eligible Macs using the Software Update section of System Settings. There’s also a macOS 13.6.6 release for those who are still running macOS Ventura.
According to Apple’s release notes, the macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 update fixes an issue that could cause USB hubs connected to external displays not to be recognized. It also addresses an issue that could cause apps with Java to quit unexpectedly, and it fixes an issue that could cause Audio Unit plug-ins for professional music apps not to open.

Updating to macOS Sonoma 14.4 is breaking the functionality of some USB hubs, according to reports across the web – though it’s unclear how widespread the problem is, or which particular peripherals are affected.
The heads-up first came via AppleInsider readers, but there’s also some discussion on Reddit, Apple support forums, and MacRumors. So far, it appears to be just USB hubs built into monitors affected by the bug, including models from Dell, Samsung, and Gigabyte.
Judging by the number of replies to the article and threads linked above, several people are seeing this issue. That said, it doesn’t appear to affect everyone with a macOS Sonoma 14.4 machine and a monitor USB hub.
Apple hasn’t said anything about the issue and is unlikely to unless it becomes widespread. The 14.4 software update started rolling out last week, bringing with it new emojis and bug fixes – though it may have introduced some more bugs of its own.

The users afflicted by the USB hub problem are trying various troubleshooting measures. There doesn’t seem to be a single solution that works for everyone, across different types of monitors and USB connections.
For some, completely powering down everything and then powering it back up again seems to work. Other people have reported that heading to the Privacy & Security page in macOS System Settings and changing the Allow accessories to connect option to Ask every time, then rebooting, fixes it.
Reading between the lines, there may be something awry with the way macOS ‘sees’ the USB hub and the devices connected to it as peripherals, but there are a lot of links along that chain – some users have found that simply switching to a different USB cable helps.
We’ll have to wait and see if Apple issues a fix for those affected. Of course, if workaround solutions are already being discovered, it’s more likely that any necessary bug fixes for the problem will get quietly rolled into the macOS Sonoma 14.5 update.
