The iPhone 16 leaks are starting to pile up now, ahead of an expected launch in September, and the latest rumor to reach us suggests the phone is going to come with RAM and storage upgrades – specifically to accommodate the extra AI features on board.

This comes from a report out of South Korea (via well-known tipster @Tech_Reve), which states that the base level iPhone 16 could come with either 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, or both, to give the integrated AI extra room to think, store, and process commands.

For comparison, the cheapest iPhone 15 comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (though 256GB and 512GB versions are also available). The extra headroom is necessary for the additional work that generative AI tools need.

Only Google‘s smallest AI model, Gemini Nano, is compact enough to fit on a smartphone – specifically, the Pixel 8 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S24 handsets. That might change going forward, but a lot of AI calculations are currently offloaded to the cloud.

AI everywhere all at once

Apple prides itself on doing as much computing work as possible locally, without transferring streams of data to and from servers on the web. It means more of your info is stored solely on your phone or laptop, where it’s secure and private.

If that’s going to happen with the AI features that Apple has been promising, then the iPhone 16 may well need some extra grunt. As this tipster acknowledges though, nothing is confirmed yet, and Apple’s plans could still change. It also raises the question of how much of this AI functionality might trickle down to older, less powerful handsets.

We don’t know exactly what these AI features from Apple are going to be, but all the signs are that iOS 18 will feature a bunch of generative AI tools similar to those we’ve seen in other phones (and oddly enough, Google might be helping out).

Apple is likely to tell us much more at the WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference), which usually happens every year in June. After that, we’ll get public betas for iOS 18, and then eventually the new iPhone 16 handsets in September.

It’s been a couple of years since Samsung Semiconductor announced the UFS 4.0 non-volatile memory for mobile devices. Samsung has since used UFS 4.0 for the Galaxy S23 series, the 2023 foldable phones, and the latest Galaxy S24 lineup. Now, the company is getting ready to advance to the next step.

Samsung Semiconductor revealed a roadmap on the social media platform Weixin, confirming its plans for the next generation of UFS (Universal Flash Storage) solutions.

The roadmap states that Samsung intends to release UFS 4.0 4-lane CS next year before jumping to UFS 5.0 in 2027. According to Samsung Semiconductor, UFS 4.0 4-lane will improve speed from around 4GB/s to 8GB/s.

Meanwhile, the big UFS 5.0 update to Samsung non-volatile memory, set to be introduced in 2027, could increase speeds above 10GB/s.

Next-gen UFS to enter production this year

Samsung Semiconductor says it plans to start the mass production of UFS 4.0 4-lane solutions before 2025. The company underlined that UFS 4.0 4-lane memory combines two UFS controllers for increased sequential read speed.

The company says these advancements in UFS technology will improve loading times and on-device AI applications. Although Samsung hasn’t revealed anything about which Galaxy devices might use UFS 4.0 4-lane first, it could be the Galaxy S25 series. UFS 5.0 could debut alongside the future Galaxy S27 lineup a few years later.

Samsung already plans more AI-based features for next-gen devices, with some AI tools possibly being offered through a paid model. Whether that will pan out remains to be determined, but either way, these AI advancements work hand-in-hand with faster mobile memory technologies

Editor’s Note: Given this UFS roadmap, we’re guessing the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 will use the same UFS 4.0 solution as the Galaxy S24 lineup, as UFS 4.0 4-lane likely won’t be ready for mass production by the time the Z6 foldable series goes official this summer.

Newly discovered Microsoft Z1000 SSD baffles experts — no, world’s most valuable company won’t start selling SSDs anytime soon but it may well be tinkering with data center storage as it did with CPU

A newly-discovered, Microsoft-branded SSD suggests the tech giant may be – or has been at least – exploring new ways to optimize its data center storage.

The leaked images of a Microsoft Z1000 SSD show a 1TB NVMe M.2 drive, apparently boasting sequential read speeds of up to 2,400MB/s and write speeds of 1,800MB/s.

The Z1000 SSD, originally revealed by @yuuki_ans on X, is made up of a mix of components from various companies, including Toshiba NAND flash chips, Micron’s DDR4 RAM cache, and a controller from CNEX Labs, a company best known for its work with data center hyperscalers.

Up to 4TB capacity

Back in 2018, CNEX Labs closed a $23 million Series D funding round led by Dell Technologies Capital which also included Microsoft’s venture fund M12. This money was partially used to fund a proprietary, advanced CNX-2670 controller that delivered 550,000 IOPS, a 25% performance increase over previously available M.2 form-factor SSDs at the time. The CNEX Labs controller in the leaked photos is CNX-2670AA-0821.

The SSD has a capacity of 960GB made up of four 256GB Toshiba BiCS4 96-layer eTLC chips and features a 1GB DDR4 RAM cache made by Micron to boost performance.

The leaked “engineering sample”, produced on May 18, 2020 when much of the world was in Covid lockdowns, suggests the drive is part of a broader portfolio of SSD models. Its design allows for the addition of more DRAM and capacitors, hinting at larger versions.

As Tom’s Hardware notes “several unused solder pads are on both sides of the PCB, presumably for additional capacitors. This implies that there may be larger versions of the Z1000 with 2TB and perhaps even 4TB of room, given that more capacity would require more DRAM and capacitors to ensure data protection.”

This isn’t the first time Microsoft has experimented with hardware design for its data centers, having recently revealed its own-brand silicon hardware in order to help further the development and use of AI in businesses.

Huawei has a game-changing 10 Petabyte storage product — OceanStor Arctic uses exciting new technology that can beat tape AND hard drives

According to recent estimates, around 328.77 million terabytes of data are created each day. Storing that data is a challenge, so it’s no wonder that we’re seeing a number of new high-capacity storage technologies being introduced. In the past few months alone we’ve reported on a ceramic cartridge with a 10,000TB capacity, a 200TB optical disc, and Micron’s NVDRAM, which outperforms NAND-based SSDs in terms of speed and durability.

At a keynote speech at MWC 2024, Huawei’s Dr. Peter Zhou took the wraps off a number of new data storage solutions being introduced by the company. OceanStor A800 and OceanStor A310 are designed to make “AI training data globally visible, manageable, and available, and improves data collection, preprocessing, and training efficiency”, while OceanProtect E8000 and X9000 are data backup appliance solutions.

Perhaps the most exciting announcement however, covers the company’s next-gen OceanStor Arctic magneto-electric storage solution.

Over 10PB capacity

Although details on OceanStor Arctic are a little light at the moment, we know that it’s designed for warm and cold data. Huawei has also said that it is projected to reduce TCO by 20% compared to tape, and reduce power consumption by 90% compared to hard drives.

Huawei’s China HQ has since provided a little more detail, telling Blocks & Files, “Huawei’s MED (magneto-electric disk) brings brand-new innovation against magnetic media. The first generation of MED will be as a big capacity disk. The rack capacity will be more than 10 PB and power consumption less than 2 KW. For the first generation of MED, we will position it mainly for archival storage.”

Tom’s Hardware suggests that since the technology is a “magneto-electric disk (MED), not a magneto-electric drive, we are dealing with something that has magnetic platters with tracks (and probably spins). The underlying principle of MED technology seems to be the magneto-electric effect, which creates a connection between the magnetic and electric properties of a material.”

The first generation of the OceanStor Arctic is slated for international release in the first half of 2025.

We’ve written previously about some of the technology that powers the Las Vegas Sphere, including the 16K interior LED screen, and the ultra-high resolution 18K camera system. Now, details have emerged of the storage employed by the massive music and entertainment arena located east of the Las Vegas Strip.

Everything about the Sphere is bleeding edge, and Hitachi Vantara has detailed how its software technology processes Sphere’s original and immersive content and helps stream it to both the 160,000 square-foot interior LED display and 580,000 square-foot Exosphere.

Hitachi Content Software for File, which Hitachi describes as a “high-performance, software-defined, distributed parallel filesystem storage solution” is an integral part of things. It consists of 27 nodes, with 4PB of flash storage for playback within Sphere.

Postcard from Earth

The system streams content in real-time to 7thSense media servers, each streaming 4K video at 60 frames per second. As you might expect, this is a world-first in terms of technology capability at this scale.

“Sphere represents a new, completely immersive and visually powerful entertainment experience,” said Octavian Tanase, Chief Product Officer, Hitachi Vantara. “To make sure that the technology behind it was ready to meet the challenge, Hitachi Vantara worked closely with the Sphere team to test, measure, and enhance how the data is processed, streamed, and projected. Quality-wise, the resolution and color are second to none, and this project has exceeded our already high expectations.”

For Darren Aronofsky’s original immersive film, Postcard from Earth, the system had to handle over 400GB/s of throughput at sub 5 milliseconds of latency and a 12-bit color display at a 444 subsampling.

“Sphere is home to many firsts, one of which is streaming immersive, high-resolution video content on a scale that has never been done before,” added Alex Luthwaite, SVP, Show Systems Technology, Sphere Entertainment. “Hitachi Vantara worked with our team to develop a solution that’s fast, reliable, and efficient.”
