How many Vision Pro headsets has Apple sold?

[ad_1]

Apple Vision Pro headset production is reportedly being cut, sales are reportedly “way down.” But but but wait: Wasn’t the Vision Pro meant to change the world of VR/AR, ushering in an era of spatial computing? Is the dream over?

Hah, no. As Sam Rutherford laid out just before the weekend, while reports and rumors can’t nail exact numbers, based on financial figures from Apple’s last earnings, Vision Pro sales likely equate to around one percent of the company’s revenue. It’s almost as if early Vision Pro sales numbers don’t matter. Remember: The first iPhone wasn’t great either.

Drake has deleted an X post with his track “Taylor Made Freestyle,” which used an AI-generated recreation of Tupac Shakur’s voice to needle Kendrick Lamar. The takedown came after an attorney representing the late hip-hop legend’s estate threatened to sue the Canadian rapper for his “unauthorized” use of Tupac’s voice. Drake used Snoop Dogg’s voice too, but… he’s still alive.

Aaron Sorkin has announced he’s writing a follow-up script to The Social Network, once again about Facebook / Meta but with a fun, miserable focus on the January 6 insurrection attempt. Sorkin is cagey on the actual details of the new script but pretty much lays the blame for the attack at Meta’s feet. Sorkin hasn’t announced a partnership with any studio to make the film, but my big question: Who’s going to play Trump?

Nikon is arguably the world’s most famous camera brand, but with the decline of DSLRs, it has struggled. In 2022, it released the Z9, a flagship mirrorless camera that could finally hold its own against rivals, but the $5,500 price tag put it out of reach for most. Now, we’re testing the Z8, which has the same sensor and specs for $1,700. The Z8 may also be better than Sony’s A1 for many hybrid shooters, particularly for video. But don’t ask me: Check out Steve Dent’s full test-shoot right here.

I sold all my Fujifilm gear and switched to Panasonic for this exclusive, little-known feature

[ad_1]

I love Fujifilm. Anyone that has followed my work in recent years will have heard me raving about it as the ideal ecosystem for travel photographers. The compact size of cameras like the X100VI, stylized film simulations, the wonderful selection of small and sharp lenses: all of it is perfectly targeted at enthusiasts and global nomads looking to express their creativity and share the places they’ve seen. So why on earth did I sell all my Fujifilm gear and change systems?

For all of Fujifilm’s appealing aesthetics and features, there are a number of compromises that come with it, which can make things challenging for those of us who make our living with our cameras. First of all, the Fujifilm X-Series cameras are exclusively cropped sensors, which means less dynamic range, less subject separation (bokeh) and worse performance in low-light situations when compared to full-frame sensors. Although Fujifilm has done a lot to improve the autofocus in its cameras in the past two years, the phase-detect systems of other brands have proven to be notably faster and more reliable.

One thing that no one else could compete with, however, was Fujifilm’s highly-customizable film simulations, allowing you to get beautifully stylized images straight out of camera. Nikon and Ricoh have had stabs at it, but no one could top Fujifilm on this…until now.

When Panasonic announced the new Lumix S5 II, hybrid shooters were once again thrilled to be given such a feature-rich camera for such a competitive price. Alongside open gate video (being able to record from the full width and height of the sensor) and all-new autofocus system, Panasonic snuck in a little feature which got very little attention: Real Time LUTs.

100 million iPods sold is a major milestone

[ad_1]

April 9: Today in Apple history: 100 millionth iPod sold April 9, 2007: Apple sells its 100 millionth iPod. Coming five-and-a-half years after the portable music player went on sale, the landmark event confirms the iPod as Apple’s most popular product of all time.

Until the iPhone arrives a couple months later, that is!

iPod becomes Apple’s biggest product

Launched in 2001, the original iPod famously put “1,000 songs in your pocket” on a 5GB hard drive. The device capitalized on the rise of digital audio files to replace physical recordings like CDs and vinyl. It also played into Apple co-founder Steve Jobs’ digital hub strategy, which placed the Mac at the center of consumers’ lives, and laid the groundwork for the iPhone.

Over the next two decades, the iPod would have an enormous impact on Apple’s fortunes and the culture at large. By April 2007, Apple had released more than 10 iPod models: five original iPods, two versions of the iPod mini, two iPod nanos and two iPod shuffles.

The devices spawned an enormous ecosystem of more than 4,000 accessories, from cases to standalone speakers. Plus, upward of 70% of cars produced in the United States in 2007 offered iPod connectivity.

iPod and iTunes drive Apple’s success

Along with the success of the iTunes Music Store — the third-biggest music store in the United States at the time — the iPod represented Apple’s ascendancy to the pinnacle of the tech world.

It was an amazing turnaround for a company that almost went out of business just a decade earlier.

“At this historic milestone, we want to thank music lovers everywhere for making iPod such an incredible success,” said Jobs in a statement issued by Apple. “iPod has helped millions of people around the world rekindle their passion for music, and we’re thrilled to be a part of that.”

Celebrities pay homage to the iPod

To mark the 100 million iPod sales milestone, Apple enlisted celebs from the music and sports worlds.

“It’s hard to remember what I did before the iPod,” said singer Mary J. Blige in the same press release. The iPod is “more than just a music player,” she said, “it’s an extension of your personality and a great way to take your favorite music with you everywhere you go.”

Lance Armstrong, seven-time Tour de France champion, also sang the iPod’s praises.

“I take my running shoes and my iPod with me everywhere,” said the bicyclist. “I listen to music when I run. Having my music with me is really motivating.”

Apple also took out an advertisement in The Wall Street Journal celebrating the sale of the 100 millionth iPod.

100 million iPods was just the start, but all good things must come to an end

But this was just the start. By 2011, Apple sold a massive 300 million iPods. While the company eventually stopped reporting iPod sales, the current tally probably stands at more than 400 million. The iPhone, meanwhile, passed the 1 billionth unit sold in summer 2016 and just kept going.

In 2022, Apple finally discontinued the iPod touch, the last remaining model of the music player.

“Since its introduction over 20 years ago, iPod has captivated users all over the world who love the ability to take their music with them on the go,” Apple said in a press release — entitled “The music lives on” — on May 10, 2022. “Today, the experience of taking one’s music library out into the world has been integrated across Apple’s product line — from iPhone and Apple Watch to iPad and Mac — along with access to more than 90 million songs and over 30,000 playlists available via Apple Music.”

And with that, Apple pulled the plug on the mighty iPod and marked the end of an era.

How many iPods did you own back in the day? Let us know in the comments below.

Another crypto-mining boom threatens CPU prices, with AMD’s Ryzen 7950X now sold out – and Intel could be the real winner here

[ad_1]

Are we about to see a return of crypto-mining causing havoc with PC hardware pricing? Hopefully not, but there are already hints that mining activity is pushing up the prices of some CPUs.

Yes, processors, not GPUs as has been the case in the past, and specifically, we’re talking about AMD Ryzen chips – high-end models from the Ryzen 7000 family.

Looking back at the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X — the first mobile phone that was ever sold 40 years ago today

[ad_1]

The scale and prevalence of mobile phones in today’s age is extraordinary when you think that little more than 40 years ago, not one person was able to buy one commercially. That all changed on March 13 1984, when the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X became the first mobile phone to be sold in the US Midwest and East coast, more than a year after it was first revealed.

Now, millions of mobile phones – that we largely call smartphones – are sold every day. Smartphone sales reached an annual peak of more than 1,556 million units in 2018, before slumping ever so slightly over the COVID-19 years, and remaining at roughly 1,339 million units in 2023, according to Statista. Phones sold today, however, are a far cry from the cumbersome, oversized and blocky Motorola handset that was first sold 40 years ago.
