‘iPhone 17 Slim’ With Smaller Display Rumored to Launch Next Year

[ad_1]

While the iPhone 16 series is still months away from launching, an early rumor about an all-new iPhone 17 model has now surfaced.

iPhone 15 Colors yellow
In a research note with investment firm Haitong this week, analyst Jeff Pu said Apple is planning a so-called “iPhone 17 Slim” model that would replace the Plus model in the lineup. Pu said this model will feature around a 6.6-inch display, a slimmer design, an A18 or A19 chip, 8GB of RAM, a 24-megapixel front camera, and a 48-megapixel telephoto camera.

More specifically, display industry analyst Ross Young said this iPhone 17 model will have a 6.55-inch display. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Plus has a 6.7-inch display.

Pu expects the iPhone 17 Slim to have an aluminum chassis, rather than a titanium casing like the Pro models. He expects the device to have some external design changes, but he did not share any specific details.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 lineup in September 2025, so some of these reported features could change.

iPhone 17 might feature “more complex” design, smaller Dynamic Island

[ad_1]

Apple is reportedly planning some big design changes for next year’s iPhone 17 lineup. The changes include a smaller Dynamic Island and a “more complex” aluminum design.

The company might even revamp its lineup with the addition of the iPhone 17 Slim.

2025 iPhones could pack some big upgrades

These claims come from Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu in a note shared with 9to5Mac. He believes Apple will reshuffle its lineup in 2025 and replace the iPhone 17 Plus with a “Slim” model. As the name indicates, the Slim model will seemingly stand out in the lineup with its “slim design.”

The non-Pro variants will include the iPhone 17 with a 6.1-inch display and the iPhone 17 Slim with a 6.6-inch panel. This corroborates a recent rumor suggesting the iPhone 17 Plus might have a smaller display than the iPhone 15 Plus. The Pro lineup will have the 6.3-inch iPhone 17 Pro and the 6.9-inch iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Interestingly, Pu says Apple will debut a “more complex” aluminum design on the iPhone 17, 17 Slim, and 17 Pro in 2025. The iPhone 17 Pro Max will continue using titanium and feature a narrow Dynamic Island. These two features will remain exclusive to the Max model.

The use of “metalens” technology for the proximity sensor will allow the company to reduce the Face ID sensor’s dimensions. In turn, this will reduce the size of the Dynamic Island.

iPhone 17 Pro could sport 12GB RAM

Internally, the analyst claims the iPhone 17 and its Slim sibling will sport an A18 or A19 chip along with 8GB RAM. The Pro variants could sport an A19 Pro chip and 12GB RAM.

All four iPhone 17 models might feature a 24MP front-facing camera. This should allow for better details and sharpness in selfies. It appears Apple will give all the iPhone cameras a resolution bump to enable them to shoot 24MP pictures. Reputed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also made a similar claim about the iPhone 17’s front-facing camera upgrade earlier this year.

Previous rumors suggest all iPhone 17 variants could sport ProMotion displays with always-on support. If these reports turn out accurate, Apple could have some big changes in store for its iPhone lineup in 2025.

iPhone 17 Plus might sport a smaller display than iPhone 15 Plus

[ad_1]

All 2025 iPhone 17 models might have ProMotion, always-on screens

The 2025 iPhone 17 Plus could sport a smaller screen than previous Plus models. This could make the phone more compact and fit better in Apple’s lineup.

Apple currently uses a 6.7-inch OLED panel on the iPhone 15 Plus. This is the same display size as the iPhone 15 Pro Max, albeit the latter uses a superior 120Hz panel.

iPhone 17 Plus could get a screen size reduction

Rumors suggest Apple plans to increase the display size of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max by 0.2 inches this year. So, the iPhone 16 Pro should ship with a 6.3-inch screen, while the Pro Max could sport a 6.9-inch panel.

This will be followed by the iPhone 17 Plus using a display smaller-than-6.7-inches in the following year. Such a move from Apple can help widen the gap between its large Pro and non-Pro iPhone models.

The leak from display analyst Ross Young is light on other details. So, there’s no clarity on how much the iPhone 17 Plus display will shrink in 2025. It also does not mention other planned improvements that Apple might be considering for the panel.

A 6.5-inch iPhone 17 Plus would sit nicely in Apple’s lineup

Apple’s current iPhone lineup consists of four models, but there are two screen size options: 6.1 and 6.7 inches.

If the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max get a screen size bump to 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, an iPhone 17 Plus with a 6.5-inch display would be a perfect fit in the lineup. It will also give users four screen size options to choose from: 6.1, 6.3, 6.5, and 6.7 inches.

This would also fit nicely with the rumor that Apple is considering using 120Hz ProMotion displays with always-on display support across its entire iPhone 17 lineup.

iPhone 17 Plus Rumored to Feature Smaller Screen Than iPhone 15 Plus

[ad_1]

While the iPhone 16 series is still months away from launching, another rumor has already surfaced about the two-generations-away iPhone 17 lineup.

iPhone 15 General Feature Blue
In a post shared today on social media platform X, oft-accurate display industry expert Ross Young said he heard that the “iPhone 17 Plus” will be equipped with a smaller screen than the current-generation iPhone 15 Plus, which has a 6.7-inch display. However, he did not reveal the exact screen size planned for the iPhone 17 Plus.

Currently, the iPhone 15 Plus has the same screen size as the iPhone 15 Pro Max. If this rumor is accurate, a smaller screen would further differentiate the Plus model from the Pro Max model, starting with the iPhone 17 lineup.

Meanwhile, it has been rumored that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will have larger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, which would be a 0.2-inch increase over each of the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max.

A summary of what to expect follows, but given the iPhone 17 lineup is still a year and a half away, keep in mind that details could change.

  • iPhone 15: 6.1-inch display
  • iPhone 15 Plus: 6.7-inch display
  • iPhone 15 Pro: 6.1-inch display
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max: 6.7-inch display

iPhone 16

  • iPhone 16: 6.1-inch display
  • iPhone 16 Plus: 6.7-inch display
  • iPhone 16 Pro: 6.3-inch display
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max: 6.9-inch display

iPhone 17

  • iPhone 17: 6.1-inch display
  • iPhone 17 Plus: A smaller-than-6.7-inch display
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 6.3-inch display
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 6.9-inch display

Alleged iPhone 16 Battery Details Show Smaller Capacity for One Model

[ad_1]

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 lineup will feature bigger battery capacities compared to previous-generation models with the exception of the iPhone 16 Plus, which will have a smaller battery than its predecessor.

iPhone 16 Pro Sizes Feature
That’s according to the Chinese Weibo-based leaker OvO Baby Sauce OvO, a relatively new source of supply chain leaks with an as-yet unproven track record for accuracy.

The iPhone 16 battery capacity details posted by the Weibo leaker match figures previously shared on X by “Majin Bu,” with the notable addition of a figure for the iPhone 16 Pro model, which Majin Bu omitted. That makes this leak the first time we have been provided with alleged iPhone 16 battery capacity changes across the board.

The figures show that the ‌iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro,‌ and iPhone 16 Pro Max will feature larger batteries than their predecessors, but the ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus is allegedly facing a reduction in terms of battery capacity compared to the iPhone 15 Plus.

Why that would be the case isn’t clear, since apart from the size difference, both the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus are expected to have an identical feature set. One possibility is that the capacity reduction turns out to be negligible in real terms thanks to efficiency improvements in other areas. On the other hand, by reducing capacity, Apple could be trying to maximize differentiation between the iPhone 16 Plus and the iPhone 16 Pro Max in an attempt to nudge customers toward the premium features (and prices) of its top tier model.

iPhone 15 Lineup (2023) iPhone 16 Lineup (2024) % Change
[Standard] 3,349 mAh 3,561 mAh +6%
Plus 4,383 mAh 4,006 mAh -9%
Pro 3,274 mAh 3,355 mAh +2.5
Pro Max 4,422 mAh 4,676 mAh +5%

When the iPhone 14 Plus was introduced into Apple’s smartphone lineup to replace the iPhone 13 mini, it gave customers the opportunity to own a device with the same 6.7-inch display as the iPhone 14 Pro Max without paying a premium. In addition, the iPhone 14 Plus also had the advantage of a larger capacity battery than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, allowing Apple to market the device as featuring “our longest battery life.

However, with the advent of the iPhone 15 series, Apple increased the battery capacity of the iPhone 15 Pro Max to make it the largest battery ever used in an iPhone.

According to another rumor, this year’s ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max will boast an even bigger 30-hour-plus battery life (compared to 29 hours for the iPhone 15 Pro Max). Not only that, both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to have slightly larger displays. If Apple does intend to reduce the battery in the iPhone 16 Plus, it would widen the gap further between the two tiers. The iPhone 16 lineup is expected to be announced in the fall.

All four iPhone 16 models could have much smaller bezels than the iPhone 15 series

[ad_1]

The iPhone 16 line is sure to be more powerful than the iPhone 15 series, but these upcoming phones might also look more premium, thanks to greatly reduced bezels.

According to South Korean site SisaJournal (via Phone Arena), Apple plans to use BRS (Border Reduction Structure) technology on all four upcoming phones – namely the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16 Plus, the iPhone 16 Pro, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

AI chip built using ancient Samsung tech is claimed to be as fast as Nvidia A100 GPU — prototype is smaller and much more power efficient but is it just too good to be true?

[ad_1]

Scientists from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have unveiled an AI chip that they claim can match the speed of Nvidia‘s A100 GPU but with a smaller size and significantly lower power consumption. The chip was developed using Samsung‘s 28-nanometer manufacturing process, a technology considered relatively old in the fast-moving world of semiconductors.

The team, led by Professor Yoo Hoi-jun at KAIST’s processing-in-memory research center, has developed what it says is the world’s first ‘Complementary-Transformer’ (C-Transformer) AI chip. This neuromorphic computing system mimics the structure and workings of the human brain, using a deep learning model often employed in visual data processing.

Apple expects 13-inch OLED iPad Pro to outsell smaller version

[ad_1]

Apple expects the larger 2024 iPad Pro model to be the more popular.
Photo: Ed Hardy/Cult of Mac

Apple reportedly ordered 8.5 million OLED screens for the iPad Pro models it’s expected to launch soon. More of these panels are for the 13-inch version of the tablet than they are for the 11-inch one.

Leaks indicate the next generation iPad Pro will reach store shelves later this month. Possibly even next week.

Top-of-the line 2024 OLED iPad Pro could be more popular

The last time Apple upgraded its premium tablets for professionals was fall 2022, so a replacement is due. And rather that simply boosting the performance with a faster processor — which Apple is supposedly doing — the 2024 iPad Pro will also get a better type of display.

It will be the first in the product line with an OLED screen rather than the tablet’s traditional LCD. With OLED (short for organic light-emitting diode) displays, each pixel glows on its own. This leads to a bright, even image with strong contrast.

On Friday, DigiTimes reported that Apple ordered 8.5 million OLED panels from South Korean companies. Of these, 4.5 million will be for the 13-inch version of the tablet while the remaining 4 million will be for the 11-inch version.

If true, it indicates that Cupertino expects the larger, more expensive version of the OLED iPad Pro to be the more popular of the two models.

Other enhancements

Previous leaks indicate that potential buyers should expect Apple’s next top-tier tablets to run the new M3 processor. This is the same chip that just went into the 2024 MacBook Air, the latest consumer-oriented macOS notebook.

OLED screen panels don’t need backlights so they’re thinner than traditional LEDs. This will allegedly allowed the designers of the 2024 iPad Pro to make the upcoming tablet significantly slimmer.

The panels also cost more, but a leak indicates that the price jump will be less than half of what had been previously rumored.
